Some Hamptons Restaurants Are Seeing An Uptick in Sales With Outdoor Dining | Eater NY

"On Montauk, Shagwong’s patio was transformed by owner Jon Krasner into a buzzy social scene where guests rinse oysters and eat fresh fish tacos with rosé and local beer, which he calls 'our Montauk version of Parisian outdoor dining.'" - Beth Landman

We always get a lobster when we come to Shagwongs, a favourite indulgent treat when visiting Montauk. Its a no fuss restaurant and bar, the service is always friendly and never a long wait for anything. A huge variety on the menu but no quality or flavour is sacrificed for the range of choice. Wine tasted a little old this time, but I guess its not a place you come to for the wine! Highly recommend this place for a walk in dinner.

Google
Good selection for a bar. Place was crowded for a NY Giants game and still had a couple tables available. Burgers were cooked correctly as ordered.

We’ve been dining at Sagwong for about 3 decades and had many meals here. Food was nothing special, but we were pleasantly surprised by great food tonight. Fluke franchise came with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Fish was so fresh and veggie was tasty. My husbands fishwich was great! With blackened fresh catch, it was so delicious! Service and ambience is just ok but it’s a popular local spot that stays open year round. If you choose right items to order, you will have a great meal. Price is reasonable and staff are efficient.

Google
Have loved this place for years but today was sadly our last visit. The waiter was working hard but he was the only one handling 6+ tables so service was lackluster. The food took quite a while to come out and still managed to be lukewarm. The wings were dry despite being tossed in sauce. The icing on the cake was having to kill a cockroach that was walking on the wall next to us. Update to respond to the very kind owner: This review was left after we paid our check in full. Have the day you deserve ❤️

Google
Their French fries are crispy and overdone. Not like soft chunky cut fries offered at many burger joints. Their prices are very affordable which makes it a budget friendly alternative to anyone preferring not to throw away an obscene amount of money for grub. But the thing I disliked most was the very unkept and neglected area outdoors which has atrocious fake grass and moldy cushions on the benches. The fake plants are just awful. Not classy. Kind of a last resort for guests looking to dine locally. Just about anywhere else is better. Definitely go elsewhere if the budget is not an issue. The outside seating area is a bad example of hospitality. Seriously in need of upgrades. Also, there were zero napkins on the dining tables which is really strange and unheard of. This place must be among the worst spots in NY state. Very low quality atmosphere, not aesthetically appealing at all. Avoid.

Google
I was surprised by the negative comments for the food, as we really enjoyed what we ordered. The steamed mussels are super tasteful, the fish tacos and fish and chips are great as well. The prices are at first expensive but we had a great amount of food. The service was also very great.

Google
This is one of the only places we could find in town that was open during this time of the season. When you walk in it’s a small bar and to the right they have a dinning area. Very cool pub like vibes. Ali took great care of us. She was very nice and attentive. The food was very yummy. The clam chowder was a nice change to what my normal liking is. I was impressed with it. The French fries and sweet potato fries were some of the best I’ve ever had in any restaurant. The crab cakes were nicely made not overdone with breading. We had chicken fingers and fish and chips. I suggest giving the fried food here a try. It’s very good.

Google
Old school bar right in center of Montauk. Go for the atmosphere, not so much the food. The famous clam chowder is only so-so

Yelp
The Shagwong is one of the few places that's remained the same over the years in Montauk, but I'd never visited it as an adult. My brother and I stopped in here for a drink to check it out. Definitely an old school vibe which makes sense since the place has been operating as a tavern for almost 100 years. It's funny to see influencers dressed up in a place like this, but we did get to witness some behind the scenes content being filmed (cue the nasal "come with me to Montauk's oldest bar" voiceover). All that aside, service was swift and friendly. Drinks were strong and not as pricey as other parts of the Hamptons (though a little sad when $14 for a middle shelf mixed drink starts feeling reasonable to you). We didn't eat here but the food that was coming out did look good. I'd come back.

Yelp
Someone suggested we try this restaurant while in Montauk. Though the servings were large, they weren't that good. The biggest fail was the seafood paella. It was not what I would call a paella - more a rice with seafood. Service was okay.

Yelp
We were in town and decided to eat at this restaurant. The restaurant had that old bar feeling and was dated . Our service was great. We had a Greek salad which was good. We also had the blackened fish sandwich with fries. The portions were huge but the fish was over cooked. I would definitely try this restaurant again.

Yelp
I've never been more disappointed in an establishment. They were extremely homophobic to my party. It was really uncomfortable.

Yelp
Great service, delicious food and overall cool place! The ambiance is very casual and laid back. I tried their clam chowder which was really good! We also had the fried calamari so yum! The French fries were super tasty! Overall a very cool place to hang out with friends while visiting Montauk! Recommend and would visit again when I'm back in town!

Yelp
A short walk from our hotel and located on the main drag, you're drawn in by the kitschy window display. Two sides- to this space, main entry is the bar side with some high top tables, lots of tvs to catch all the games- the "other side" boasts dining area- staff buzzing around like busy bees. Bus boy hot on the heels of a departing table, getting ready for the next group. Service was timely- friendly, knowledgeable staff, priced accordingly. Unsure of parking for we walked- can only recommend the street parking. Fun bar crowd - seems like a pretty fun place. Loss of star - looked down at the foot of our table... a variety of food items that seemed to have been missed in the cleanup. Otherwise - highly recommended

Yelp
I heard mixed reviews about this place but gave it a chance. I really wouldn't. it's ran by staff that give selective treatment as if it's a high school. don't expect good service; better yet, don't go here
google avatar

Yelp
This was a short walk from our hotel so we figured we would give it a try. It is basically a simple bar that is historic. My husband had the chicken Caesar salad and I had the fish tacos. The fish tacos were made with local caught fluke and were very good and refreshing. Service was good too! I'd come back.

Yelp
Delicious large portions, kind efficient service We enjoyed large lobster (mayo cold style) roll, fish and chips, chicken quesadillas, and salad with shrimp, Clam chowder tastes homemade Get zucchini fries too

Yelp
My friends enjoy staying in Montuak and I enjoy day trips there, so even though we all live in Nassau County I came out to Montauk for a few hours while they were staying at a hotel near there. We decided to go to Shagwong for dinner. This place is awesome but be prepared for a wait and be prepared to potentially drop some money. I was trying to be very mindful of a very limited budget I have so I just got the mac n' cheese appetizer as my meal with a glass of water. My friends helped pad the bill because they got lobster mac n' cheese as an appetizer and they got an entree as well. The mac n' cheese was great and I love bacon in my mac n' cheese. There is no other way to have mac n' cheese. It was cheesy, baked well (extremely similar to homemade mac n' cheese you make home), the bacon was cut up to blend into the mac n'cheese nicely. I liked eating here and would come back again.

Yelp
Good: 'kind' waitress, nice vibe, fresh clams Bad: slow service, terrible emulsion(oil and linguine didn't get along at all), no salt in food(I added it by myself), uncooked garlic slices, why macaroni was in the dish??? No reason for revisiting and pls don't visit here. Save your time and money.

Nina B.

Yelp
Food was great ! We had the big pretzel and fish tacos and they were delicious ! Service was fantastic ! Would definitely go back !

Yelp
So all and all, this restaurant is not bad, but it's also not great. The environment is good. The appetizers like the clam chowder was sold out so we decided to get fry calamari instead. Once we got the fried calamari, it took the servers at least 5 minutes to give us the utensils and plates. The food was a little too salty, but it was solid and simple. Every single time we have an empty drink or ask for the check, it takes the server more than 5 minutes to get back to use. Then I was confronted by the server as to I why I gave her a $2 tip. Well, now she knows.

Yelp
This was the worst food ive had in a long time. Service was terrible. My whole meal was cold as shit. The frozen vegetables were garbage. Take a look at the "Mashed potatoes" lmao. There was nothing mashed about these potatoes straight brick. My girl got the prime rib sandwich and the bread was so soggy it felt like it was dipped in a cup of water. Her fries were stale as shit and cold. The mac and cheese was decent but it lacked flavor honestly. The cooks must be drunk back there. Id rather eat mcdonalds and spend $20 then come here and spend $150 on this dog shit food. :,(

Yelp
Nice local spot open in the winter. We had our toddler with us and felt comfortable even though it's a pub scene. Waitress was attentive even though it got busy. Food was good! We got wings, salad, and Mac n cheese.

Yelp
Great spot for decent flavorful food that won't break your budget. Our server Brianna "Bri" was fab! She helped suggest a couple of items and man were her choices spot on! We got the fishwich and a Greek salad with a side of sweet potato fries. Delicious ! We asked that both the sweet potato and French fries be extra crispy and they were soooo good. Thank you!

Yelp
Place is exellent and priced fairly ! The fish and chips are amazing ! Really really gooood food !

Yelp
Pros Only game in town on the night we went French Onion Soup was very good Burger was a hit Bavarian pretzel worth $10 Friendly service Cons Men's room was under construction with no paper towels to dry hands Falafel pita was not very good
google avatar

Yelp
Food was mediocre and took for ever, though the staff were very friendly . Our waitress was super nice and also worked on a fishing boat. She was running around serving and hosting at the same time. There was a really fun band we listened to after dinner. Bartender Allie was a sweetheart as well and they had quick draw ! Don't expect anything special with the food ( prime rib was a mess, chewy calamari, great greek salad and clams casino ) but it was a good fun spot to stop in while on vacation and had reasonably priced drinks .

Yelp
Underage hangout Bouncers let in high school kids beginning at 845 shut down kitchen early to accommodate owners sons high school friends.

Yelp
After an afternoon of cruising out in Montauk for some R&R enjoying the scenary, we were hungry and decided to stop in at the Shagwong for a bite.  We had passed the place earlier in the day and saw that it was open, so we pulled in and walked through the door.  We got seated right away, and they brought our drinks while we purused the menu. The prices on the menu seemed to reflect the area; the Fish and Chips was by far the most inexpensive seafood selection so we decided to share an order.  When the food came it looked and smelled wonderful (as it should have for just North of $70.00 including our draft beers). Service was fast and friendly, and the ambiance inside the restaurant was nice, though the bathrooms decidedly needed some serious cleaning.  All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to return.

Robert B.

Yelp
Been stopping there everytime we go to montauk. Matt the bartender was awesome. We ate at the bar. I had the Irish dip which was excellent also had the clam chowder and crab cakes. Both were very good.

Yelp
Three of us came in around 1230 on a Tuesday in late March. It's one of those places where you enter the bar area and stand there awkwardly at the hostess stand while everyone around ignores you. But once we sat down, things improved. Our server Troy was friendly and on top of things. Food was good! Mum and I got the Montauk Fish and Chips- we especially liked that it wasn't a traditional beer batter on the cod but it was a nice crunchy panko crust. The fries are terrific, as was the tartar sauce. Fish needed a bit of salt but otherwise delicious. Both fish and fries were piping hot- thank you! Dad got the lobster roll. He said it was fine, though we prefer hot buttered lobster rolls to the cold lobster salad style. That said, the serving size was appropriate for the price and it was presented nicely. Can't really give ya my usual price list cuz dad bought a shirt and a coozie. But I think the lobster roll was $38 and the fish/chips were $26 per. Beware they do charge the newly popular 3.9% fee for using a credit card.

Yelp
Very chill dive bar. They had Irish music playing since the parade was that weekend. They have a restaurant attached next door which seemed nice as well. Little small place with a pool table in the back so hunt for a seat. Only had a few beers and left but definitely a nice stop along the way. Both bartenders were on point with serving everyone.

Yelp
Terrific will be back food and service were exceptional close to hotel easy to park. food excellent for bar food
google avatar

Megan G.

Yelp
All the quality of the food at this place is very low rent. My son ordered a hamburger. It was some kind of pre-fabricated, frozen nightmare that was the consistency of a baseball mitt. When we sent it back, the owner refused to take it off the check, despite the fact that my son only took one bite out of it (and then gagged). My seafood paella was a disaster as well. The chicken was rubbery and the "chorizo" looked like a sliced up hotdog. Take your business elsewhere.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
0 stars if I could. My dog is a registered service animal with paper work and an ID and the bartender refused to serve us. After asking upon arrival if they accept service dogs and she said yes. Bartender continued to argue with me and tell me that she was going through the same traumatic experience as me with zero ounce of empathy and she was very condescending and bitchy. Told me not her rules but the owner Shawn This bar deserves zero stars and zero credibility Perfect example of cold hearted people that are money hungry and don't care about humanity

Yelp
Great service, excellent portions, nice prices, good beachy & divey energy! Would come again.

Yelp
Took a day trip with my better half and couldn't find a place that had lobster rolls and we found this place, needless to say this is my favorite place now and I have to say everything we ordered was delicious and fresh! Great little spot right on the main drag of Montauk. We got fried calamari, chicken sandwich, and Mac & cheese and everything was amazing and fresh. A sports bar with classic wood finishes and TVs throughout. Good sound sound system, good tunes (classic rock). Our server, Matt was so friendly and at the same time mindful of social distancing. Would surely recommend eating here. Great ambience, fresh dishes, awesome customer service. Fantastic work. Delicious food, friendly and helpful staff! Highly recommended

Karen S.

Yelp
This place was an old standby that we always enjoyed in the past. But this time it was pretty terrible. The calamari was so rubbery, it was inedible. The clam chowder, supposed to be award winning, had a giant lump of mashed potato in it. Overall, we were very disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
I was looking forward to our annual Shagwong Lunch- however this year it was particularly terrible. We sat in a nice spot over looking the dining room. We ordered half a dozen oysters and a dozen clams. One cup of clam chowder and one bowl of clam chowder. I splurged on two martinis- however I was NOT asked the preference of my Gin. Our cold bar arrived and the oysters were fine, the clams were the worst. Murky full of clam poop and sandy. Not the usual pink and gorgeous clams we've had in the past. These were not edible. Our server cleared our cold bar items and even mentioned how we didn't finish the clams. I told her they were looking a little rough and her response was "yeah, they're clams." We eat clams- for $24 a dozen I want my clams pink. Or at least acknowledgement that these looked like literal poop. Our soup came barely warmed and although it was still tasty, it truly lacked the luster that Shagwong once had. The kicker of this off putting experience was that our server charged me for premium alcohol when I did not consent for it. No- we aren't difficult to please but this was literally so disappointing. We won't be returning.

David S.

Yelp
Da bestest! Jimmy Buffett's favorite place and now mine...and they're hiring! Try the alcohol, it's SO popular here.
google avatar

Abhishek K.

Yelp
Excellent place to get a lobster roll. We got the fried calamari to start; hot, crispy, well seasoned. The lobster roll was large and buttery, and they were very generous with the lobster. It came with fries, which were perfectly salted and crispy as well. Very solid place for sea fare
google avatar

Andrew G.

Yelp
Authentic Montauk! Seafood was fresh and service kind. Lots of good choices on the menu. The chowder is great!
google avatar

Shawn H.

Yelp
This was good. I got the fresh catch of the day (tuna), which was fine, and my wife got the prime rib sandwich, which she really liked. She didn't really like her clam chowder though. We also got my daughter chicken fingers, which were actually pretty good. Not a place we'd seek out, but a decent spot.
google avatar

Brianne S.

Yelp
Stayed the weekend in Montauk and ordered take out from here one night. Being that it's winter, the food was ready daily quickly and was still hot by the time I brought it back to my condo. We ordered the prime rib sandwich and the Mac & cheese. First off, the sandwich was absolutely delicious! The Mac & cheese was the cheesiest I've ever had, all bubbly and beautiful. Ugh so good. The inside was a little dark and looked very local but I would 100% come back and order or eat in here next time I'm in town! No pics :( ate too fast...
google avatar

Yelp
Recommended by a local after a tasting at the Montauk Brewing Company. Shagwong did NOT disappoint. Some of the best Buffalo Wings we have ever enjoyed. We followed with fish tacos and a blackened fish sandwich. Both amazing! Definitely worth the stop. Our waiter was also top notch. Don't be deceived by the exterior - Shagwong is worth your time!
google avatar

Jake W.

Yelp
Cool old school bar / restaurant. Been coming here for years. Beef Tacos were good as well as the Huge Pretzel. Fish tacos were awful and house salad was just Ok. Server seemed busy, take your order deliver the food and not much else. There are some definite Salty characters in the place. If they put a little more thought, time and effort into the dining room decor as well as the food would move my rating up. A PJ Clarkes type menu and not such a slapdash tables and chairs and wall decor would add a lot to the food and ambiance. Bar is definitely a cool place to have a Drink though.
google avatar

Donna V.

Yelp
The place was recommended by a local and it did not disappoint. My review is a bit late but worth it. We wanted to watch Sunday football. What a great local Joint we had so much fun. The staff and crowd was very friendly. Food and drink did not disappoint. Can't wait to return!!
google avatar

Tracy K.

Yelp
Montauk villages most centrally located bar has been a fixture for decades and is the place you want to stop off for drinks and or a bite. More so on a cold off season night by the coast. It looks great inside having the bar recently refinished and a warm glow of holiday lights. That and the upbeat music created the right small town vibe for Montauk at night. French onion soup was good . The next person over was having New England clam chowder. Another having fish. The bartender was friendly and quick with drinks. I could have stayed another few hours it was so pleasant being in from the cold.
google avatar

Yelp
Been coming here for years. Not for the hipster dufasses. Old school restaurant in an old school part of town. Food is excellent but prices have climbed with JB's America. Always hit it when in town. Food is excellent. Never had a bad dish. Beer is cold.

Yelp
Shagwong has been a staple in downtown MTK for as long as I can remember. It's always been a relatively "safe" bet because the menu is a bit more extensive then many of the other options around. BUT it's nothing great or fancy. If you want some drinks and fried food it's a solid option. If you want a nice wine night with a surf and turf plate I'd probably go elsewhere. -Calamari 3/5, Usually hard to mess up. It's pretty standard, came with a marinara and aioli dipping sauce. The only thing I'll say negative about it was it was SUPER salty. So much so that my S/O had two pieces and called it quits. -Buffalo Wings 4/5, best part of the meal. They were tender, flavored well, & a nice portion size. -Baked Mac & Cheese 2/5, we actually regretted getting this. Flavorless, pasta was undercooked, and overall very underwhelming. -Caesar Salad W/ Shrimp 3/5, the salad was good but the shrimp were horrible. Ice cold and tasted like they had been pulled from the ocean and thrown in. Really turned us off and made my stomach turn. Overall, this place is an alright choice. My personal opinion is that so many places in MTK are overpriced and have limited menus so this was a bit of a safer option for us. But don't expect anything fancy or mind blowing. The service was alright, but drinks and food did take a while to get.
google avatar

Lynn L.

Yelp
Stopped in for a cocktail and was totally ignored. 2 people at the bar and both bartenders were preoccupied!? I've worked as a waitress and my husband has bartended you want to put $ in the register and in your pocket! Been to Shagwong for many years. Not anymore
google avatar

Mary Jane R.

Yelp
January in Montauk does not give many options for dinner. Especially during a pandemic. Shahwong was open for take out so we gave it a try. My seafood paella was terrible. Truly. The sausage was burnt and dry; the seafood mushy and the rice tasteless. My son had the fish tacos and said they were ok. And my husband had the fish sandwich which was ok as well. Basically tasteless. The meal was prepared quickly after order, and the service was fine (they automatically add a 15%tip for takeout which I thought was presumptive). Was excited for a nice meal and this did not do it for us.

The A.

Yelp
For so long, I was puzzled by the negative reviews of Shagwong. Over the last several months, it's become more clear. The tavern isn't as clean as it used to be, the orders are often incorrect, and the food lacking. However, the service, or lack thereof, is at an all-time low. We have been regulars for many many years. If you visit, my hope is that you don't have the great misfortune of being waited on by Nicole. The word server does not apply here because that would imply that Nicole serves or tends to you. She does neither. What Nicole does do very well is ignore you, make faces at you, make you wait for food & drink, play on her phone while sitting in the empty booth near the bar and sing along with the music. Nicole was shockingly inattentive, alarmingly rude, and happy to be so. It is clear that Nicole does not concern herself with the feelings of her customers, nor her management. I have never experienced such bad service at Shagwong in all the years I have visited. While I hate to say that I will not return due to Nicole, who is one bad apple, at the moment I will not return. Absolutely zero stars.

Yelp
This is a great option in the winter! Feels like a very local spot. There was no wait on a Saturday night but good music and plenty of tvs to watch the Olympics on. One side of the place is more like a bar and the other side is a restaurant. Both the calamari and the lobster were cooked well and delicious!

Mary Ann R.

Yelp
had to wait a very long time for just tacos and chicken sandwich. loud ..noisy. and just not somewhere we will be coming back to. was much better years ago. it has gone downhill.
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty crappy all the way around food wise- if you go, just go for drinks at the bar. Bar scene seemed fine.

Yelp
Good food and solid atmosphere. Not sure about the nightlife but the dinner was great. Fresh fish, big salads, and not as overpriced as some of these places out here now. Highly recommend for a chill dinner without the unnecessary glitz
