Shake Shack’s New Veggie Burger Is Actually Good | Bon Appétit

"The new Veggie Shack burger embraces vegetables rather than imitating meat: the patty is made from mushrooms, sweet potatoes, carrots, farro, and quinoa and contains distinct chunks so you can taste the crunch of carrot and the chew of mushroom. It arrives on the chain’s pillowy potato roll, slathered with the signature Shack Sauce (pickle brine, mayo, ketchup, and mustard) and topped with American cheese, pickle medallions, and crispy fried onions—resulting in a juicy, flavorful, and texturally satisfying sandwich. One reviewer noted an unusually gooey three-slice cheese melt and found the sandwich surprisingly hefty and more filling than a normal burger despite lacking meat protein; they also preferred it to the existing breaded, cheese-filled mushroom option for its more well-rounded flavor. Available nationally via app ordering with an in-store rollout planned for May 5, the item is cited as a hopeful example of a vegetarian fast-food offering that celebrates vegetables instead of trying to mimic beef." - ByLi Goldstein

Sadness. I usually love shake shack, but the service here warrants a one star. When ordering they were out of the one beer they offer, but I had to check their cooler to confirm (it’s located in front of the register). When paying the device asks for a $1 or $2 tip which is nonsense for fast food. The employee seemed as if she could care less about the world around her. After 20+ min of waiting they finally called my name starting “last call” when it was the first time. There is a digital board that shows names of orders that are ready, but apparently it’s random showing names that aren’t ready, not showing ones that are, not clearing names after they pick up. The condiments counter had zero ketchup remaining from 8 pumps, which included an employee sitting in that counter for 5-10 min while waiting on their own food (not kidding). Cheese fries cried disappointment as the cheese was in a tiny side cup of cold cheese sauce. Burger was sloppy. Sadness all around. $27 for a burger, fries and drink.

Google
I understand this is an airport location, but charging over $20 for a burger (which was very tasty) and a bottle of Coke? I wanted a strawberry lemonade, but they said all they had were bottled drinks (both lemonade machines in view were full) and beer and wine. And the burgers don't come with fries. So the burger is $14. Also, no smiles. Actually the lady taking my order was irritated at best and kinda rude. On top of all that, the only shake available was the Red-eye, which is coffee flavored, and I don't like coffee. How can you call it Shake Shack with no shakes? This was my first encounter with Shake Shack, and will be the last!

Google
I am so frustrated. The rude baldheaded lady with the short nppy dreadlocks really destroyed my shake shack experience. I came there to order some cheese fries and she gave me cold fries and my cheese sauce was less that half way full. So I asked for more cheese sauce and she tried to charge me for another sauce. But when I tried to pay with cash she refused and said card only. . Poor customer service. Poor quality of food . And negative experience. She should be fired

Google
Shake shack is delicious!! Server Braylin was outstanding- quick, friendly, and helpful. Sheila was also helpful and sweet. My Cheeseburger with Bacon was very good and fresh. I ordered it cheese and bacon only, but it had the sauce on it which I didn’t realize until my last bite. However it was GOOD!! Fan now of their sauce. Their Mushroom / Cheese Burger (combined!) is AMAZING! Home run with that one. It’s located on the way to Terminal E in Charlotte International Airport. Great place for lunch or dinner while in the Airport!! Sheryl was a great cashier tonight! Friendly and welcoming. Manager was also great - fixed a burnt hot dog that I waited way too long for. And the girl who was setting the food up to send out was very rude to the guy who was asking her how much more time was my order going to take. Many orders after my number were being called, so I asked him. He asked her and instead her checking, she gave him attitude. “DON’T ASK ME!” She replied with an attitude that turned me completely off. Uh NO - that’s also your d’ job is to find out what a holdup is. Maybe, just maybe it got lost, taken etc and uh, this IS an Airport, so time is a factor thank you very much……… save the attitude for home. Follow my page for lots of reviews from across the Globe. Google
$30 for the awesome shack stack burger, fries, and shake. Friendly service by Rochelle today. Plenty of seating and quick ordered but had to wait 10 minutes for the food so be prepared because they are busy. Pricey but good… Thank you from your Arizona friends 😎🙏😇

Google
I was really looking forward to food from this chain bc I'd heard so much about it..... but to me it was pretty blah. The lady taking our order missed my burger so they did give me one at no charge... but while it was good, it really was just another cheeseburger. I probably won't try them again.

Google
I don’t understand the overwhelmingly bad reviews. I came here on Christmas day and the plaza was packed. The staff was kind and my order came out quickly. My double shackburger was juicy and delicious. The quality of the service and the food is comparable to other Shake Shack locations despite being located in an airport. Prices also have the usual airport upcharge.

Google
Unorganized, out of chicken, out of shack sauce, out of shakes, place is disgusting all over. $45 for 2 burgers, 1 order of fries, and a soft drink. BUT, the food was ok. One fry in the fry basket in our order was the worst French fry I’ve ever had in my life. The rest were ok
google avatar

Aisha H.

Yelp
Great service and wait was fast even though it's busy. Employees deserve a raise. But best part even though it was busy was the service
google avatar

Deena J.

Yelp
It was quite busy but my food came out within 2 minutes. First time trying the Bacon & Avocado Chicken Sandwich, it was crispy with yum flavors. I would get it again.

Yelp
The staff here are friendly, helpful and quick to serve. For this, I give this location 1 star. I had a quick 50 minutes layover at this location and I wanted to grab Shake Shack. I first tried Shake Shack when it opened in New York and didn't feel that it was worth the hype, so I decided to give them another chance while on the East Coast. My second visit did not change my first impression. There was a huge line and I barely had a chance to place my order before my flight started boarding. I chose two single Shack burgers and a side of fries. I really wanted to try the Red Eye Shake, but the wait was 30 minutes and it was not worth missing my flight. The area around the ordering register was clean, the staff came out regularly to clean and they all were laughing and clearly enjoyed working together. The food was barely even meh. It looked very pretty; perfectly photogenic, but when I bit into my burger, it was very gritty and grisely. It didn't taste like it was seasoned at all. The tomato and lettuce was very fresh, but the burger was very thin, almost non-existent and it took a lot of chewing to finish every bite. The fries were just ok, lightly salted and warm, but not hot. I spend $25 for my meal and I spent the rest of the flight feeling like I was going to throw up or have a bathroom accident. I was NOT a happy camper. I cannot recommend this location. You are better off with vending machine food. Avoid eating here if you want to have an enjoyable meal.

Brett R.

Yelp
Lots of attitudes from most of the employees including management simple questions are met with attitudes I asked the Cashier something he asked the manager and the manager got an attitude with the employee about it
google avatar

Anita W.

Yelp
Tolerable and quick service. Clean counters and available condiments. I got the sausage, egg and cheese. Breakfast was cooked hot and fresh; thick pattied sausage and fried egg on a bun. Was really good
google avatar

Angie H.

Yelp
This is my 2nd time ever trying Shake Shack. I am not impressed. They claim that is a quality meat they use but there were many hard tiny little chewy nugs of gristle in my tiny single burger. No onion on basic burger nor pickle?! Barely any sauce, loved the bun though. Good price for airport but just had my tummy upset gurgling within an hour of eating it..
google avatar

Cheryl H.

Yelp
Not a bad hamburger for an airport, but oh my goodness is it LOUD! Constantly screaming music, chairs being dragged over bare Floors that will shatter your eardrums. We were hungry so we ordered a burger and some fries, just one order almost 20 bucks but when you're hungry, you gotta cough up the dough. The french fries were hot and crisp, the burger was hot and it will hold us over utill we get to real food .
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
If you've enjoyed Shake Shack in other locations, you know what to expect. That being said, employees are beaten down by a relentless onslaught of CLT patrons. I honestly don't think I've ever walked by this location without seeing a full line through the rope barriers. As with any known chain or branch restaurant located in an airport, be mindful that your expectations may not live up to your memories. That being said, the quality of the food has been solid when I visit, which makes Shake Shack a contender for my dollar if I need a quick bite at Charlotte International.
google avatar

Karen V.

Yelp
If I could, it would be more of a 3.5 star rating overall. The service was average for an airport fast food restaurant. Not bad, but nothing above & beyond as far as customer service. I think it would go a long way if the staff behind the counter could try to smile. But, I can also understand it's a busy airport and Shake Shack is very popular. Maybe they are dealing with a lot of crappy people. The line went by quick. The wait wasn't bad for the number of people that were there before me. They give you the burger and fries in a nice portable box which makes it easy to carry. The shake machine was broken. No problem. I didn't want one anyway. The ShackBurger and crinkle cut fries were super tasty and crispy. The best part of the experience was the meal. As it should be. It was hot & fresh, which is why I rounded up to 4 stars. It's most definitely a good option if you have a layover in Charlotte. This one is located at The Plaza between concourse D & E. A very convenient spot with lots of seating. I'd return for that burger and fries.
google avatar

Oren R.

Yelp
My burger was trucking delicious. I just got off a plane from Boston and my stomach was grumbly and it kept telling me to go to shake shack... so I did. Fries were very salty but that's because I put like 14 packets of salt on it tbh. Great shake shack but I'm incredibly gassy now *toot*
google avatar

Hannah H.

Yelp
Anytime in the Charlotte airport, I'm always looking for something yummy and quick to hold me over before my flight. I recently stopped by shake shack in the food court and the line should have told me it was a great choice. They move through people quickly so it's great if you're in a rush. I got the bacon cheeseburger and fries and both were fresh and hot. Overall the burger was good and flavorful but slightly greasy. Overall not a bad spot for the airport!
google avatar

Dexter A.

Yelp
Airport food is always a hit or miss. While not the best burger and fries in town, nor was it the cheapest, it hit the spot for sure. Be prepared to wait a bit even though they get you through the line pretty fast. Food is made to order, so you'll have to be patient. Though you may have to wait, the service was fast, the staff was kind and the area was clean.
google avatar

J David H.

Yelp
I'ma gonna give them a weak 3, but do not misunderstand it's not your normal Shake Shack experience likely with long waits and pricer menu. Counter service friendly enough, wait was long. Burger was a mess, but hot and tasty. Fries hot and crisp. Ketchup packets were sticky and gross. Shake machine broken. It's a stretch. But 2.5 rounding up.
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
Was really looking forward to getting Shake Shack during my layover but wow was it an awful experience. They were out of 80% of the menu (just to name a few things: soda, bacon, hot dogs, custard, shakes...and more). No shakes at shake shack!??! Very disappointing. And how do you not have soda? That doesn't even make sense to me. Sounds like lazy workers if I had to guess. Workers are slow and not friendly, with the exception of one: the gentleman calling the order names/numbers. He is the only one working hard. This location needs to work on their forecasting of ingredients and their staffing.
google avatar

Dick C.

Yelp
Food was fine. Restaurant was very dirty. Tables were not cleaned off. Debris on the floor. The condiment counter was dirty with empty ketchup cups strewn about. Never saw it like this before.
google avatar

Eugene R.

Yelp
Very poor and disorganized service. Rude staff and why take names when you can't take them right or read them off. Just stick to ticket numbers. For a high volume place absolutely ridiculous wait. I get airport prices but for tiny portions this was high. Also disappointing to get family order and walk all the way to gate and find out they shorted a fry. Oh well plenty of other choices in the Charlotte.
google avatar

Josh H.

Yelp
Airport food but I'm not disappointed. The crinkle cut fries were tasty and crisp. The shack stack, burger with a giant fried mushroom on top was pretty darn good. Service was relatively quick, waited about 10 minutes for food but there were several people waiting and they would complete an order about every minute. Ambiance, it's an airport food court.
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
Airport chains are tough, especially in major international ports. The line was extensive and service matched. There was no sauce to be had and the food was acceptably similar to the non airport version. Not bad.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
When reading over some of the other reviews I was a little shocked how bad some of them were. But when thinking about my experience I didn't have any issues. Being from Jacksonville we don't have a Shake Shack and I'm a huge fan of a good smash burger so I always stop by when I'm at the Charlotte Airport. As soon as I got off my flight I went to Shake Shack. The line moved pretty fast. I ordered and within getting in line and receiving my food I probably waited 10 minutes so not long at all. Obviously this is a airport restaurant so it's going to be overpriced but again that's to be expected. If you don't want to pay for overpriced airport food bring a granola bar with you. I ordered the Double Smokeshack and an order of the cheese fries. I all comes in a nice box/bag so you can easily bring the food with you. The Smokeshack is so good. Great smashed double patties with cheese cherry peppers for a little sweet heat and lots of bacon. Seriously there was a lot more bacon then I expected. The fries are crinkle cut which I normally find just OK but they were crispier then others I have which I liked. I am also a big fan of cheese sauce. I will say it was a very salty lunch more nothing a little ketchup with the fries and cheese sauce couldn't fix. I will probably keep coming back since I have never had any issues here and I can't get it where I live.
google avatar

Troy C.

Yelp
I love Shake shack and it's a must to go to whenever I am in the north! The Charlotte airport has a fantastic Shake Shack the definitely satisfies my craving. My go-to order is always a Shack Burger, Fries and Coke to drink. The fries are unmatched from other places. There isn't another fast casual place that offers crinkle cut fries like it. They are addicting! I also love the shake burger. The sauce on the burger puts it above the rest when combined with the perfectly soft bun used. Any state in the north I am happy to get shake shack in. It's just a must for me.
google avatar

Meesh G.

Yelp
I am rating this location 4 out of 5 for their breakfast. I normally am not a huge fan of Shake Shack. I have plenty of other places I'd rather go to for a cheeseburger and fries. But this time, I got a breakfast sandwich from this airport location. They were all out of bacon, so I got the sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich. The egg seemed freshly cooked instead of frozen and the sausage was fantastic. Next time I've got an early flight, I'm headed back there to try the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. Also, there wasn't much wait for the sandwich.
google avatar

José A.

Yelp
Shake Shak is always good wherever is located! This particular location is interesting to review as it is located inside of an airport terminal, so there is not much to review about location and parking. The hamburgers, cheese fries and half and half drink we ordered were delicious. Staff was friendly and the space was pretty clean. Good stuff!
google avatar

Kaje Y.

Yelp
Overall this Shake Shack in the Charlotte airport is decent for its burgers. Pros: - Not much of a line (could just be the timing of my flight but its busy at this airport!) - Moves fairly quick - Juicy burger - crispy french fries! Cons: - Chicken burger was DRY AF. - Prices are always expensive , but look at the single party burger and it's over $7 - Hours on yelp not updated (says closed at the time of me ordering) Neutral: - Plenty of seating that they can't control
google avatar

Dave F.

Yelp
Burgers were good and the crinkle fries were hot n fresh. Quick service as well. Thank You
google avatar

Vincent L.

Yelp
Shake shack is getting worse every year or maybe I been eating them so much that I am tired of them. Burger/ sandwich size had been shrinking for sure. Buns is soft and meat is freshly grill so overall it is still better than other chains. Line is slow asf in this location so if you have a short layover, be careful My opinion about burger in this airport 1. Smashburger 2. Shake shack 3. Burger King
google avatar

Annie B.

Yelp
We stopped here during a short layover and found service to be quick and the food to be delicious. We arrived pretty late so thankfully there wasn't much of a line and we were able to order and get our food within 10 minutes of getting in line. The burger was perfectly cooked and just the right amount of moist and crisp and the French fries were so good that my husband who normally doesn't love them ended up eating a majority of ours. My only complaint during my visit is that the ketchup packets they had available were all sticky and covered in a burst ketchup packet. It was impossible to find any ones that were clean which was disappointing. They did have ketchup you could pump into a small container but there were no lids so the sauce wasn't transportable.

Taylor N.

Yelp
Service was quick, but the burger was cold and bland. Worst shake shack ever. Spend your money elsewhere
google avatar

Kristine K.

Yelp
8:30am between flights: Breakfast sandwiches were excellent - soft bun, eggs not overcooked, and served hot and fresh. I asked for my sandwich to have bacon extra-crispy and no cheese, and that's the way it came out. We didn't have to wait too long, either. We would come for breakfast again.
google avatar

Kim K.

Yelp
Grab lunch here while waiting on my delayed flight. The service was fast and the woman was friendly. My burger and fries were hot and tasty. My only complaint was I asked for extra special sauce on the side and they put it on my burger and then refused to fix it after charging me an extra $.99.
google avatar

Betty J.

Yelp
Long line but nice service and good experience. I had a lettuce wrap double burger with the bacon & peppers. Tasty if you can wait 15-20 minutes. All airport restaurants have a long wait so choose quickly and jump in line! Very crowded it's hard to find a seat I ended up finding a quiet corner section to sit near my gate. The airport food court is noisy and dirty.
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
Not a bad option if you are looking for fast food in the airport. The line does get long, but they are pretty quick to work through the orders. There's quite a bit of seating in this food court area as well.
google avatar

Brittany T.

Yelp
I was so excited to see a Shake Shack in the airport! I am obsessed with their cheese sauce. My mom and I both got burgers and split a cheese fry before dashing to our gate and barely making our flight. The service was kinda slow but they were pretty busy. Our burgers were cold by the time we ate them and not as good as I remembered but we did have to walk a ways before eating them. The fries were phenomenal like expected.
google avatar

Bob B.

Yelp
Located in the Charlotte airport. Shack Shack always has a line, but not for a good reason. There was only one cook behind the grill. The food was cold and over-priced. The price is what you expect at an airport. If you are in a rush to get to your next flight. I recommend not to bother even trying to order food. Average weight time for us at 7pm was atleast 25 minutes, add another 10 minutes to get through the ordering line. I saw several people leave in order to catch their flight then pick up their food.

April B.

Yelp
We had the pleasure to dine at Shake Shack this past week. Customer service was excellent! Seeing we never been there before, the employee recommended the double shack burger for me and Shroom Burger for my boyfriend which I actually taste it was so flavorable. We order cookie and cream shakes they were so delicious. I Thank everyone for a pleasant hospitality and will be back!

Eugene M.

Yelp
Food was great. With great customer service. Food was cooked to perfection, employees worked togethrr

Yelp
The thing I like about travelling is that I get to indulge in chains that aren't readily available to me in my area. Even if it happens to be in an airport. Once I got off my flight I booked my way here to stand in line to satisfy my craving for at least a few months. The line was a bit long and moved at a bit of a snail's pace. The reasoning for that is that they were short staffed (much like anywhere at present). But the lady working the orders would hop off the register after an order and help prepare an order. One order taken, one order prepared. The line sure did start to back up. Once up there, I already knew what I was going to order. So there was no hesitation on my part. Just give me the burger, order of fries, some cheese to dip it in, and a lemonade...wait, there isn't any lemonade. Ok, give me an iced tea...there isn't any iced tea. Lord, just give me some water. The area that this resides in is quite the mess. The trash cans were overflowing in the area where you get straws, napkins, and what not. I got a straw and basically had to take my trash with me when I found my seat. The food, was exactly what I needed. Definitely satisfied my craving. But, why didn't you just dump that cheese right on my fries like I usually get and give me one of those wooden forks? I mean, that is half the fun of it. If it wasn't for my craving of this at that very moment, I probably would have went elsewhere. All because of the staff. Not only were they short staffed, but they weren't a cohesive team. It just wasn't a good time until you actually ate your food.

Ed B.

Yelp
The chicken sandwich had potential. Brioche bun is a plus but when delivered with a significant thumb imprint, what's the point. Pickles are likewise quality but when they are all sloppily placed at one end of the sandwich it's just a mouthful of pickles. Never again.

Terri M.

Yelp
First off let me say it was good for quick spot to stop at in an airport the customer service was amazing the manager was top notch she made sure i was listened to and made sure the staff did what they was supposed to if I ever come through Charlotte airport again im going back :)

Dana D.

Yelp
If you're flying through please stop by Shake Shack. we're here to make your day better!!!
google avatar

Jacqueline T.

Yelp
After our flight was delayed, we weren't going to make it until we got to our destination without eating. Airport food is never very good, but I thought Shake Shack was a safe choice. Boy was I wrong. We got a double SmokeShack, a Shack Stack, and a cheese fry. We wanted a shake, but they didn't have ice cream. It was all barely luke warm. The cheese had congealed. The Fried mushroom was so old/overcooked it was hard and couldn't be cut with a plastic knife. The SmokeShack was a little better but the outside of the burger was crunchy. I've had Shake Shack outside of the airport several times and their food is usually good. Shake Shack is always expensive, but the airport premium is rough. We paid $30 for two burgers and fries from a fast food restaurant. I'd be less annoyed with the price if it was remotely close to being good. If you have to get bad airport food, save your money and go somewhere cheaper.
google avatar

Don C.

Yelp
Not sure why all the bad reviews. Yes, it's pricy but your at an airport. The service was a bit slow but all things considered, these guys did great. Food was hot and good. Ordered a double burger and it was tasty. The bacon cheese fries I ordered had the bacon and cheese sauce on the side which I didn't like and there was hardly any bacon for the price. The place appeared clean and plenty of tables around to sit at. All and all not bad

Jeremy L.

Yelp
Horrible service highly do not recommend!! Lady at the front was slow and didn't even get all of my order. I was so mad and to top it all off it took me forever just to get change back. Prices are outrages like water is $5 and this tiny burger I ate in 4 bites was $13.the cheese fries had enough cheese for about 1/3 of the fries but couldn't enjoy that bc it was to cold and the bacon was hard as a rock. Only thing good was the rootbeer float I got but still took us 15 min to get it. They need new management and better employees. I don't usually talk bad about people or do these reviews but the customer service and the food was so bad I had to download the app just for it.
google avatar

Janice J.

Yelp
The burger was warm and fixed correctly. Although part of burger was medium cooked. The service was quick considering this was the airport.
google avatar

Jerry K.

Yelp
Standing in line for 45 minutes waiting to get served by lazy ass attendants is a joke. Don't even try if the line is more than a few people deep.
google avatar

Amanda K.

Yelp
One day we'll get a Shake Shack by me and I won't drool over every airport SS... but today is not that day. The real MVP here is this Shake Stack burger and -- hear me out -- going all-in on having a crispy portobello mushroom with (on!) my burger instead of fries. A little veg, still get that crunch, a perfectly filling burger. Big fan, big fan. Fast, friendly service. Always a little questionable condiment/ napkin area (something is always spilled/ dirty) but people suck for not cleaning up after themselves and this location gets BUSY!
google avatar

MickeyBlue I.

Yelp
Totally DISGUSTING! Like everything at that disgusting airport! I went for breakfast Tuesday morning at TARA took my order. I specifically said I didn't want the "shake sauce" on my breakfast sandwich which by the way SUCKS! And she told me "the sauce comes on the side". Which was a big LIE! In addition to the FAKE EGGS, unmelted cheese, and plain burger bun, I had to taste this disgusting sauce slathered all over tater tots inside my sandwich!! I had an instant stomach ache! Never again! $8.00 in the trash!
google avatar

Hytham I.

Yelp
Service was hostile. Staff was incredibly bothered by customers--how dare we order food at dinner time! Cashiers kept taking orders at a reasonable pace but the kitchen simply could not keep up. The wheels completely fell off the bus. The wait for food was unreasonably long. The condiment dispensers were all empty. There were ketchup packs but I dared to request some mustard and the reaction was pure contempt, Soup Nazi style, kind of the way I would expect to be treated in prison. Rude and full of rage. Surprisingly, the burger was actually pretty good (one star for that), though fairly small for $8. Sadly, they forgot to ring up my fries. So no fries for me. All in all a terrible dining experience for a renowned New York institution. HMS Host is desecrating the good Shake Shack name. Danny Meyer should yank their franchise. No restaurant should be run with this much hatred.

Ana C.

Yelp
one male staff worker took my order & i was surprised by how incredibly rude they were. will not be returning lol.

Yelp
Charlotte, NC thank you for bestowing a Shake Shack for travel weary folks in transit!! Just a bit busier than the normal Shake Shacks, but still give a military rate, and YOU KNOW THEY HAVE CUSTOMER SERVICE WHEN YOU SEE CHICK-FIL-A workers in line to eat at the Shack!!
