The Shake Shack empire just keeps increasing its presence in the Bay Area and with their first new location in the East Bay, in Oakland's Uptown neighborhood, they may just have just opened their most beautiful location yet, as it is on the ground level of the magnificently restored Uptown Station complex. Located on the corner of Telegraph Avenue and 20th Street, Shake Shack is hopefully just one of many window-filled storefronts to take over the many retail spots that are still available at Uptown Station which is a mix retail and services on the ground level and offices on the multiple floors above, and after walking through their lobby the rehabilitation a building that once housed various department stores is nothing is nothing short of remarkable. An atrium lobby filled with sunshine, all that is missing is more businesses to populate its ground floor, and thankfully one of those businesses taking a chance on this refurbished architectural icon is that of Shake Shack. Founded by restaurateur Danny Meyer, Shake Shack started out as a hot dog cart inside Madison Square Park in New York City over twenty years, and its popularity steadily grew thank to their growing menu of moderately priced smash-style burgers, shakes, frozen custard, and crinkle-cut fries that are all made in house with the freshest ingredients.
I have wanted to visit the newest location of Shake Shack ever since they opened in Oakland late last year, and recently finally got the chance to after visiting a friend who worked in the Uptown Station building that houses this new location. Windows that stretch from the floors to the ceiling, plenty of casual booths to sit in, and a convenient open kitchen area that is fronted by a pick up counter made for this location, is a certifiable feast for the eyes. Of course, they had their requisite kiosks with flat-panel touch screens for customers to order from ready to go to make it easy to pay and wait for one's food. Since I have already eaten the signature hamburgers at Shake Shack many times before, I decided to step a bit out of my comfort zone today and opted to order their Chicken Shack chicken burger, which was a crispy chicken breast served with lettuce, pickles, and buttermilk herb mayo on a toasted potato bun. What is nice about ordering from their kiosks is that they remind you that you have the option to order extras for your sandwich such as tomatoes, sliced onions, and Shack Sauce. But what I did notice is that you definitely have to look for the extras on their kiosk order screens, as there is no reminder at the end of your ordering experience that will remind you to do so before you check out. In addition to the Chicken Shack, since it was warm outside and the business is called Shake Shake, I decided to order their Cookies & Cream Shake to go with my meal. All told, my total was a little under 15 dollars for my sandwich and shake after tip.
After waiting in their clean and natural-light filled dining room for about ten minutes for my lunchtime meal, I was presented with my shake and sipped it immediately and took my Chicken Shack on the subway to enjoy at home. After waiting a few extra hours to enjoy my takeout order, I was thoroughly impressed with how well my meal held up, as after a quick run in my toaster, my chicken and bread combination was still flavorful with every bite. And why should it be, as their burger wasn't necessarily on the heartier side, on top of being sold for what one could consider a higher price point versus that of their competitors. But I have to admit I do love the food options at Shake Shack and am so thrilled that they took a chance and opened a location in downtown Oakland, when so many of their competitors chose not to. Do I wish they considered expanding their menu to feature more burger, chicken sandwich, and sides options? I sure do, as I feel that there is so much room for growth. At Shake Shack, they are providing the residents of the East Bay Area a high-end fast-casual burger option and job opportunities that they never got to experience before, with burgers and shakes made with quality ingredients and tastes as such, and for this we should all be grateful. Everything old is new again at Uptown Station complex in downtown Oakland!
