A Rare Kosher Food Truck Sells Hot Chicken Sandwiches at Synagogues and a D.C. Bar | Eater DC

"I discovered a rare kosher kitchen on wheels based out of Silver Spring, Maryland that calls itself Schmaltz Brothers; their menu pairs a Nashville hot chicken sandwich with fried matzo ball bites and other inventive Jewish comfort food. The truck’s “Zinger” features a chicken thigh soaked in dill pickle brine and twice-fried in a hot batter, topped with togarashi jalapeño slaw, harissa aioli and extra pickle slices on a fluffy homemade challah roll. The matzo ball bites—quarter-sized, made with unleavened breadcrumbs, spiked with hot-honey schmaltz and served with pickled onions—come across like arancini, while the Bubbie’s BBQ Brisket Sandwich stacks thick-cut beef slathered in carrot jam and a sweet concord-grape steak sauce (reminiscent of Manischewitz) into a challah roll; babka with chocolate swirls and a juicy cheeseburger that uses vegan cheese to avoid mixing meat and dairy round out the creative menu. Co-owners Yehuda Malka and Chappall Gage, drawing on rabbinical-school and kosher-catering experience, aim to change perceptions of kosher food; the truck posts its schedule on Instagram, makes regular appearances at Maryland synagogues, holds a Sunday residency at the Electric Cool-Aidbar in Shaw, is building a catering business for events and holidays, and plans a permanent public space at the George Washington University Hillel next year along with seasonal menu twists like a new Hanukkah latke variation." - Evan Caplan

Google
Excellent! They have more stocked than my Safeway. And probably healthier prepared foods. See photos. But they didn't have Bampe mustard i was let down on the mustard selection. Otherwise a good food and product option.

Google
Shalom Kosher is very large and has a great deli counter, a bakery, and fresh sushi. It is great to shop and not have to look for hechshers, knowing every item in the store is kosher.

I recently visited the local shaloms supermarket and was thoroughly impressed with my shopping experience. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a clean and well-organized store. The aisles were clearly labeled, making it easy to find what I needed. The selection of products was impressive, with a wide range of fresh produce, meats, and dairy products. I was also pleased to see a variety of organic and gluten-free options. The staff were friendly and helpful, assisting me with finding specific items and answering my questions. The checkout process was quick and efficient, with multiple lanes open to minimize wait times. Overall, I would highly recommend shaloms supermarket to anyone looking for a convenient and enjoyable shopping experience. With its great selection, competitive prices, and excellent customer service, it's a great choice for all your grocery needs. Rating: 5/5 stars.

I enjoy shopping at this store, although the products are slightly pricier compared to other stores. Not all Tnuva products are available, such as Shimenet and yogurt.

Google
Everything in there is Over priced, nothing is made for the consumer. It's financially draining to keep kosher Shushi guys never there either. That shouldn't be the case

Google
All we buy are the bagels, which come from NYC and cost only 99 cents each, a real bargain. The rest of the store is fairly expensive, so we shop more at Aldi and Costco.

Robert P.

Google
good food reasonable priced, closed late Friday afternoon till Saturday evening.

Google
Terrific kosher market. Got some wonderful kosher and Israeli items there and also got fresh sandwiches from the deli for lunch. Terrific staff and everything was top notch. If you're wondering about the one bad review, you can see the screenshots of that reviewers "reviews" here. I sense a pattern.

Yelp
I don't shop here, just stopped to use the restroom, everyone was nice, but these are literally the most disgusting bathroom facilities I've ever used, do the owners care ?

Yelp
Bakery: Stale baked goods! Hard as a rock mini almond cookies, and old Napolian pastries which have old, cracked dried out icing that have a freezer taste. The bagels are not as good as they used to be. I think they must have changed their suppliers for the entire bakery. I used to come to get nice pastries for Sunday brunch but now there's no reason to ever come here again. Just aweful!

Yelp
While Shalom's offers the biggest selection of Kosher food in the area, they are unconcerned with the needs of those with disabilities. The bathrooms are very narrow and are not accessible to people using wheelchairs or strollers. While this has been brought to the attention of the owners on numerous occasions, they could really care less. They are in violate of ADA and they don't care.

Yelp
Best kosher market in DC. Terrific meat department, they will custom prepare your order. For example I ask for rib steaks cut to 1 1/4", they will prepare and have the order ready. Same with larger orders in advance of holidays. Shalom's sister offering, Signature Catering, does a good job. They started offering weekly Shabbat dinners for takeout on various themes (Moroccan, French, Italian, etc.). We ordered this week because it was Smokehouse themed. Ordering online was easy, pickup at Shalom super convenient (I call in, they bring a box to my car!). Food came with instructions on reheating, which worked great. The food was amazing. We got: Dry Rubbed Chicken Wings with Mumbo Dipping Sauce; Bourbon & Cherry BBQ Glazed Bone-In Chicken; Smoked Rib Eye Fillet Roast; Smoked Peach & Blueberry Cobbler Will definitely do this again.

Yelp
I stopped in to see what this store had. It's clean and has most things you would find at any major grocery store. However, I bought a pack of cookies and a small bucket of popcorn and Tommy disappointment, when I got home I discovered that BOTH were open prior to purchase; how disgusting! Definitely won't be coming back or recommending.

Ella B.

Yelp
Good goods with good service. Recommend to kosher food buyers. Just need to pay attention on the service hours in the holidays.

Yelp
For a mom and pop supermarket, they keep their store well stocked with fresh foods and mostly friendly workers. As one of only 2 kosher supermarkets in the area, having the market basically cornered means you can slack off a bit and not worry about decent sales no matter what. This place doesn't have that attitude at all and props to them for making it a better experience with more selections every time I go there. If only they opened up more shaloms!

Yelp
We ordered a Super Bowl Dinner delivered from Shalom Kosher: THAT was great food! I'm not even Kosher at all! Great tasting Food, Good Quantity, Quality ingredients, Good Variety, Great Presentation, Delivered on time. Definitely would order from here again for the next party !

Yelp
I was surprised when I went to Shalom Strictly Kosher on University Blvd only to find that they have moved to this locale. It's a win-win for them given that Kemp Mill has a large Orthodox Jewish population. I really have only one item on my must have list that I can get here cheaper than anywhere else: white chocolate chips. The ones I buy from here are parve, which means nondairy, which means vegan. I do quite a bit of vegan baking and one recipe in particular call for these chips. Not all white chocolate chips are dairy-free, and buying them online from a vegan store is pricey. so, I am so thankful for having this store so close by. Their produce is great, and competitively priced with the big chain grocers. Though this store may not be what you are looking for to do your weekly shopping, it certainly fits the needs of the community that surrounds and welcomes it.

Yelp
Shalom Kosher's new location is now open, Takes the place of the Magruders Big Wide isles, Over 5ft, Went through pretty quick and all I got was tuna salad and some 3 layer chocolate coated halava. One suprise was the extensive selection of disposable aluminum trays, Never seen that anywhere before, the most I've seen before was at a dollar store, more small cake pans and bundt than I could inagine using. Where did the Buffalo go? Halava was too much like a sugary sweet than a sesame treat.

Yelp
Bought 4 cans hearts of palm tips on special in spring 2021. Opened one weeks later and it was horrible. Looked at expiration date and it was 2018. The rest, howeve, had a good expiry date in 2024 and were fine. Don't see how that happens--mixing new and expired product, unless the manufacturer did so--but I was appalled. Too little $ at issue to deal with the hassle of a return, but I hope I don't get sick. --Buyer beware with this store. --It us not ok to sell years-old, expired food products to the public.

Yelp
It was very important for me to write this review, Not only that the food was good and the service was amazing!!! I drove from Virginia Beach and I got a flat tire it was raining cats and dogs and the owner and hid sun came out and help me fix it with a big smile on their face they really are amazing.

Yelp
I absolutely love Shalom Kosher due to their products and customer service. One employee in particular named Janice goes above and beyond the call of duty by having my groceries ready for me to pay for them by the time I arrive. This is particularly helpful because I'm totally blind, and it makes it easier to gauge how much time I'll need to spend at the store which in turn helps me in setting up my transportation to and from Shalom Kosher.

Yelp
I love this store. The produce is hands down the freshest and best selection and prices in the area. The butcher is WONDERFUL (price point AND especially quality). The bakery is wonderful. Challah bread in multiple iterations AND whole wheat. And....drum roll....a grocer in Maryland where I can buy WINE. Lovely selection of kosher wines that you won't find locally at a decent price point. I go and buy their smoked salmon "tidbits" at a price far less than the same thing from Whole Foods to use in cooking. Their bagels are just like NYC. Their turkeys and homemade turkey gravy are just like Grandmom's and the chicken soup....HEAVEN! Yes, I'm a fan!

Yelp
The best kosher market in the area however very pricey but it's worth it because you can't find any Kosher products all around the area I think it will be nice to lower the prices Service is friendly Remember always check expiration on projects what they

Yelp
Hoped to have a nice neighborhood market. Some things are okay but the two times we've gotten baked goods, one loaf of bread, one bag of rolls they have been so stale, ugh. I asked my husband if he got the rolls from the "expired date" section and he says he didn't.

Yelp
love the variety and location, don't love that I had to return "fresh meat" a and fish a couple of times because it turned out to be bad and smelly once I got home and got ready to cook. Came back to the stors and customer service was GREAT and accepted my return no questions asked! Also, I do not like the prices been a bit over the top, just cause they are the only kosher store in the neighborhood.

Yelp
I recently purchased a Beigel's (spelling) babka that was as hard as a boulder. It could be a doorstop. I bet the regulars know to squeeze it first. 6.99 down the drain---no dates on a lot of things--- they got me!

Yelp
Great place to get your Kosher food needs. Sometime their sales even beat Safeway and giant!

Yelp
My review is specifically in regards to their bakery. Bought a package of pita Friday morning (8/4) and by Saturday afternoon 5/6 of the pitas in the package had spots of mold and had to be thrown out. Makes me wonder how fresh some of their other baked goods are. I will not be returning here anytime soon.

Yelp
Went to Shalom Kosher with a friend while I was visiting. The store was clean and well stocked. It's basically just like a regular grocery, but everything is kosher so if you keep kosher then you don't have to worry about checking for a hechsher (label on a food item certifying it's kosher). Everyone was friendly and their prices seems to be the same as the ones at the regular grocery store we went to. If you have a child you might want to know kids get a free cookie from the bakery. Overall, a good experience.

Yelp
RUDE! I have had so many problems at this place with their deli counter employees! They all ignore the customers - pretend like they don't see them! Today this guy turned his back on me when I was trying to order. He was heavy in a conversation with the cleaning lady. Done. Spending my money elsewhere - I'm not even Kosher, I was just trying to support a local business!

Yelp
In NoVa, there is no complete Kosher supermarket so one must "go up to Maryland to the butcher". I love Shaloms, even loved their quality when they were in the hole-in-the-wall place on University. Since moving to a bigger space, they have more room and more selection (obviously) but I go on regular runs for my MIL who lives in Williamsburg and has no kosher butchery. Drop like $250 at a time. You can call ahead & order all your meat and pick it up ready and wrapped the next day. The staff is terrific. Everyone is super-friendly and helpful. They have an extensive deli counter now too. Great selection of meats, baked goods, wines and deli. Keep up the good work!

Bill N.

Yelp
I used to buy chicken and fish here (- ~3/18) and the quality for chicken was great. Since, I've purchased chicken twice and both times it was old and tasted like it it was on the verge of going bad. I took my $600 a month food budget elsewhere.

Yelp
Very convenient, a lot of my favorite stuffs, variety of meats, cheeses and products. It's great to have a kosher place where I don't have to be worry about the products I use

Yelp
I think you will never find Amba Sauce in Washington DC, just in this store - perfectly made...Very friendly staff, loved the place!

Yelp
Excellent assortment of Passover groceries and excellent service. They even helped us load our purchases into our vehicle.

Yelp
What a pleasurable shopping experience! The store is large, airy and clean. Huge selection of kosher food. Great location with a lot of other good shops and restaurants close by. Produce is fresh. Bakery, meat counter and prepared foods, as well.

Tamara B.

Yelp
Shalom has A very good selection . I like the new kosher / organic turkey burgers, cold cuts & products from Israel . Staff very nice to me always ! If someone had a bad experience perhaps "cut people a break " we need more of that in today's world .

Michael O.

Yelp
I would give it 5 stars if the prices were better, much cheaper even in Baltimore but ok blablabla supply demand. Great variety, vast selection. Everything that you could possibly want to stock your pantry and refrigerator is here. They also have a delicious selection of pre-cooked foods. The staff are friendly and helpful, and there's always someone to speak with -- plus, they are very in-the-know about products available at shalom kosher.

Yelp
highly recommended kosher store in our neighborhood high quality and fresh food great people highly recommended

Claudia K.

Yelp
This store has some good food but they are overpriced. i guess they figure that if people are serious about keeping Kosher they will buy what they have to buy no matter the price. But for people who aren't Jewish and don't keep Kosher- sometimes it seems to me like a rip off. i don't drive and Shalom is the only grocery store near to where I live. And another thing- I went there to day an almosr everything I wanted to purchase they have taken off the shelves because the food wasn't kosher for passover. I thought that was crazy. They should leave the decision to buy these things up to the customer. If it isn't appropriate for passover no one says they have to buy it. But I don't keep Kosher and most of the things I wanted were removed!I am sure I am not the only customer that shops at Shalom that misses these items being removed. It made me furious. The Deli is way overpriced. I got this tiny container of Artichoke salad and it cost me nearly $5 -barely enough to keep a bird alive. I am sure God doesn't like to see people being ripped off. CAK
