Shaman Review - Noble Square - Chicago - The Infatuation

"We love our BYOB spots here in Chicago, and there are generally two kinds. First is the casual bottle of wine BYOB, probably an Italian place with solid food. The second is everybody's favorite "Fill In The Blank Sushi Restaurant," where you should probably eat something in addition to consume the mass amounts of alcohol you bring. But it doesn't always have to be one or the other, and that's why you need to know about Shaman. Shaman is a small plates Mexican BYOB spot from the same people who brought you Chilam Balam, and it's one of the better BYOB restaurants around. Looking to party? Good news: they have an unreal margarita mix to blend with the bottles(s) of tequila you should bring. Not looking to drink infinity margaritas? No problem, because Shaman isn't just a "come get drunk while pretending it's dinner" kind of a place. The food delivers too. The menu changes roughly every month or so to incorporate what's fresh and available, and they combine a lot of ingredients you aren't used to seeing together, like sea scallops with watermelon and mint salad. The tables are big, clunky, and wooden, with stone walls adorned by pictures. The pictures on the walls look like those of our Mexican grandmother, or at least it's what we imagine the pictures on the walls would look like if we had a Mexican grandmother. The servers are also great. If you come in with a big group and can't decide on what to order, feel free to let the staff take the lead and just bring things out. Food Rundown Chunky Guacamole A traditional yet tasty and chunky guacamole served with homemade crispy tostadas. Pork Belly Tacos Pork belly tacos with salsa negra, kiwi pico de gallo and chicharron, which is fried pork rinds. One of the best items we’ve ever had here, so any sort of taco is a good idea. Goat Cheese Enchiladas If you’re a goat cheese fan, these enchiladas are delicious. Otherwise, for sure not. Mahi Mahi Ceviche A solid amount of mahi mahi with tomatoes, habanero, cucumber, cilantro, and avocado. It comes with chips too and the habanero adds some nice heat. Grilled Honey BBQ Pork Ribs Sounds like Memphis BBQ until you douse it in queso fresco and a tomatillo pico de gallo. After the pork belly tacos, this is probably our second favorite. Flank Steak Grilled flank steak with roasted potato, crispy onion, and guajillo sauce. A pretty basic dish amped up with the guajillo. Good for someone who enjoys more familiar flavors. Seared Scallops Seared scallops served in a chile and cucumber sauce with zucchini mint salad and watermelon. Interesting flavors – we’re into it." - Sam Faye

I recently hosted my friends birthday dinner at Shaman on a Wednesday evening. We had about 25 people and we rented out the entire place! Reserving the dinner was very easy and the owner was very responsive to my requests and needs. The entire staff helped me set up for the birthday and as guest started to arrive they were very helpful in taking peoples coats and getting everyone a fresh beverage. For dinner we had a set menu with I think close to 6 courses and every items was absolutely delicious, there was not an empty stomach in the room. Shaman is BYOB so my guests enjoyed brining in the beverage of choice! The pictures on the website is very similar to what the space looks like and I loved the exposed brick walls. Overall I am looking forward to my next visit and trying more of the menu options! I would def hold another private party there and or attend when I want a yummy meal out! Also you must try the guacamole...some of the best in town!

The food here, small plates of gourmet Mexican food, is incredible. And because the menu changes on a monthly basis, it's always a new experience. Of course, there are staples on the menu that never change as well. The servers have always been super friendly and accommodating with alchohol (It's BYOB). So glad this place opened up!

We enjoyed another meal at Shaman, trying the hen this time. The food is so good here, with many flavors to tantalize the taste buds. I love the owner, she is a sweetie and took real good care of our requests. This is by far, my favorite restaurant in Chicago. It also helps that it's a BYOB as my family can drink copious amounts. We had the Sangria mix and brought our wine. Now I'm hooked on the Sangria. Can't wait to return.

Mexican small plates at a friendly neighborhood spot serving amazing food and offering great service. The menu changes regularly but the time I went my favorite dishes were the mahi mahi ceviche, pork belly tacos and grilled pork ribs. It's BYOB and you can bring beer wine or tequila (to mix with the house pitchers).

Not sure how this is the only byob place in west town open past 10, but that's how I discovered it. Fantastic food - pork belly tacos were my favorite. The atmosphere is a bit odd and could use some updating, but the prices and quality more than make up for it.

I absolutely love this place....a small and cozy neighborhood byob with some of the best ceviche and all-around great mexican small plates. the servers were very friendly and warm, and even invited us back for free dessert when we were too full to order. no frills, excellent food.

Decent small plate mexican. It is a little pricey by the time you fill up. Atmosphere isn't great, but isn't bad. It was pretty dead when I went with a friend so we had great service.

I will never go back here. The lady who works there with black hair was so rude. She told us we had to leave by 7 so they could give our table to someone else even 5hlugh we were the only ones there. Then she screamed at us for bringing too much beer.
