Years ago, the Shameless Buns food truck had me titillated with the words SPAM FRIES. Since then, it has continued to traffic its imaginative mash-ups of Filipino faves all over town. However, it has been increasingly difficult to lay my hands on these buns because of the breadline of ardent chowhounds clamoring for the pandesal sandos and the limited production capacity of the truck's kitchen.
Enter the SB restaurant on Fraser Street. It's not a huge space to call their own (seating is extremely limited), but it's a space all the same, in a well-chosen location a stone's throw from Church's Chicken. The decor is loud, proud, and imperturbably Pinoy. #getshameless
THE LITTLE SAUSAGE ($10) sandwich features longaniza pork sausage nestled in atchara (pickled papaya slaw) draped in a fried egg, moistened with sriracha mayo, and glittered with green onion and fried garlic. The toasted pandesal brioche serves as the perfect platform for this little gem. If there were a side of garlic fried rice, we'd have a near-complete Filipino breakfast.
TITA'S MEATLOAF ($11) sandwich was recommended as a new restaurant-only item, and it is not to be dismissed. The two little embutido (Filipino meatloaf) patties smothered in garlic calamansi aioli and fried shallots were extremely enjoyable to ingest.
FILIPINO SPAGHETTI LUMPIA ($10) was surprisingly delicious and surprisingly big. Think 'burrito' but with a crispy spring roll exterior contrasting with the soft sweet spaghetti interior - a brilliant carb-on-carb concoction finished with a side of chipotle cheeze sauce.
Where I hope to see some improvement is in the quality of the fries: it would be awesome if they could be more wholesome and hand-cut rather than the generic skinny battered frozen variety. Our FILI-PINO CHEEZE STEAK FRIES ($16) were the only disappointment of the night, as the beef tapa and caramelized onions were far too salty and the chicharron too pulverized to detect.
Nevertheless, it's not often that I have a meal where I immediately want to return and have more. Just be forewarned: the sandwiches are not exactly plus-sized; however, given the richness of the components, maybe that's not such a bad thing.
If you're a fan of the food truck, you already know all this. And the restaurant's just as good. Be sure to ask for some complimentary banana ketchup and garlic calamansi aioli.
