We weren’t expecting to find these bold Asian flavors in Montana but not only did we find it, it was executed so well and at such good value for the price point, that it blew our minds! We had the green curry, bison mapo, nahm tok angus steak, and the sticky ribs. The meat quality here is top notch; most of these dishes elsewhere can be tough or grisly or fatty but not here. Spice level was perfect for us. All of these dishes were so good that we’d eat anything this kitchen staff makes! So with that in mind, even though we were so full, we HAD to get the coconut pandan tres leches cake and boy were we glad we did. The cream topping was light and refreshing, pairing perfectly with a properly soaked through cake. The coconut topping was also light and crumbly, not woody like we’ve had at other places. Exceptional attention to detail showing through. Thanks to Heather for her service, which was friendly and just right. Nice space that was a bit confusing to find but not a real issue. Fantastic value… much better quality food for the price we paid here than anywhere else!

Always a great experience here. After a little delay on one of our dishes the chef (James Beard nominee) even came out to apologize. Truly a unique gem in Bozeman! Menu changes make it always different. You must go early for the bison dumplings 😋

Food: lots of great options for flavor and taste!! My favorite was the noodle curry and the steak was great too! Surprisingly the cucumber salad was also very tasty! Didn’t care for the duck soup. Chicken wings were good but a bit spicy! Service: Overall server was attentive and friendly. Atmosphere: The restaurant does have tight spots but it is very fun and has a great atmosphere/way of serving food. Would recommend!

Superb food! Make a reservation! The ribs are wonderful, there's a nice twist on tomato salad, super atir fried cabbage.. .those all sound like ordinary things but the chef steps it all up 5 notches for complex flavors & presentation.

Absolutely some of the best food in Bozeman. Unique, full of flavor, and paired with a beautiful atmosphere. Every bite was an experience. I’ve been to Michelin-star restaurants, and the uniqueness of flavors and ambiance here were comparable, if not better. Our waitress was wonderful, offering thoughtful recommendations and making kind conversation between courses. We will certainly be back to try more of what Shan has to offer!

I love going to this place and invite friends to eat here too. Tonight, we ordered the usual. Our reservation was at 4:30. Sat right away! Service was fast in the beginning after we got our appetizers @4:43, we ordered our entrees already. Our first entree came at 4:52 ( I take pictures of everything i order lol! Typical asian) We got almost everything we ordered except for the grilled beef curry. (We used to order this one too) Checked back with the server at 5 PM, she said it’s coming. Waited… checked back with her 5:15… it’s coming…. We watch her come to the kitchen but never asked anyone about it. The chef happens to pass by, I asked him at 5:29 😅 I asked him how long the beef curry takes to cook because we’ve been waiting for almost 45 Minutes. He said he’ll check. Came back and said I just got the ticket at 5:06, so it’s just about 25 minutes. Uhm, okay. But we ordered it at 4:43. The server definitely forgot to ring it in and just ringed it in the first time I asked. Lol. Overall the food tastes good. The server prolly just needs to be more attentive. We work in the industry too, and we try our best to understand. Just giving my opinion on our experience.

We've been to Shan about 6-7 times over the course of the last few years for date nights and special occasions. The food is incredible. The spices and flavor in each entree is next level. We always send friends who visit and family members to Shan if they want a special evening and an amazing meal. When you walk in, the place smells so good. You can smell the spices and everything cooking. We typically get dumplings and drinks first, and then get about 4 items to share between the two of us. A salad, dan dan noodles, ribs, and something off their evening specials list is typically what we do. We get reservations a couple weeks before hand so we can get in and sit at a table. They are busy for a reason... There food is amazing! And service is great! Update 2025: We've come to Shan 3 times thus far this year and the meals have been incredible. We typically make an early reservation so we can get dumplings, since they run out. We went out last night with friends to celebrate a birthday, and had yet again another amazing experience. Jessica was our waitress and she so friendly, helpful, and on top of things. The owner ( Jarrett ) stopped over to say hi and check in on things. He is great and runs a top notch restaurant and team. A couple new items we tried out were the Green Curry, beef salad, and then the Tres Leches Cake and Coffee Jelly for desert. All were great choices!! When you go with a group of 4-6 poeple it is great because you can share everything and get the opportunity to try more entrees. The food and experience is very reasonably priced in our opinion, especially when you go with a bit of a group and split up a bill. We will be back to celebrate the next special occasion!

Amazing. I wish we could go every night. Everything was incredible, beef salad, green curry, lamb skewers and earth’s three treasures were standouts.

**vegetarian review** I stopped by here on my way to Yellowstone! It was a chatgpt recommendation. It's located in a very cool hipster location. Maybe cute stores around. I got the earths treasure - stir fry eggplant and the cold sesame noodle. The portions was well size and both dishes were quite delicious! Little pricy but good food. The service was also pretty fast.

Amazing Asian food, accurate tastes. Albeit expensive. We ordered braised pork belly, mapo tofu, Thai noodles, 3 treasures, Dan Dan Noodle. They were all very tasty. My favorite is Dan Dan Noodle, it was spicy and the sauce was rich, and noodle was tender. Mapo was right on the spot, exactly as it should taste. The pork belly was great, a bit hard on the lean meat but the fat melted right away. The only thing I didn't enjoy as much was the chicken noodle. The soup and noodles was good, just the chicken had some flavors that I didn't love.

This review is long overdue and isn't just for my last time eating there (2 nights ago) but for the 6-8 times we've been there since they opened. First off, I read both of the 1 star reviews, neither have anything to do with the food and both sound like the typical problems you get trying to keep a Bozeman restaurant staffed when cost of living in the area is so high and you struggle to get committed long term staff. Secondly, I don't need to read any of the 5 star reviews because they are all spot on as far as I'm concerned. Bozeman couldn't be more lucky as a town to have had a chef like Jarett happen to stop and invest here. This is far and away the best restaurant this town has ever had. Third, you need to put in 2 orders of the lamb dumplings WHEN YOU SIT DOWN. I don't care if your reservation is at 5 when they open. We've tried to order them at 5:30 and they've only had 1 left. This is my only complaint about this restaurant. MORE LAMB PLEASE OK THX. The wings are spicy and the shit. The salads are all delicious you can't go wrong with any of them. The green curry is better than any Thai in 3 states and I've tried them all. The Bison Mapo Tofu is delicious, ESPECIALLY left over, and I hate tofu anywhere else I've had it. It's a weird thing to say in Montana that a freaking skirt steak is the best cooked beef I've had here, but this steak beats the prime rib and ribeyes at Stacey's, Land of Magic, and Chico's fancy dining room IMHO. It's totally different than a steak at any of those, which are all great, but it's so good that I can only imagine they give it a 2 day butter bath before cooking it - tender AF. The tamarind ribs are the best ribs in town, I'm glad they've survived the menu changes. If they have the Chang Mai sausage special you'll want to get that too. It's a carbon copy of the same sausage I've had at Kalare Night Bazaar in CM itself. The Dan Dan Noodles will burn your rookie tongue off and they're also my third favorite thing on the menu after the lamb dumplings and the below. Arright hear me out cause this is a sleeper on the menu and most of BZN and the world is MISSING OUT. Veggie section. Earth's Three Treasures. You will never think about Eggplant, Peppers and Potato the same way again after you have it. Wife used to live in a rural area of China outside of Beijing. Di San Xian (Earth's Three Treasures) was a staple in the tiny little street restaurants there. But she could never get it in the fancier restaurants in Beijing, and when we moved back to the states, she searched high and low for it in the authentic Chinese restaurants in places like SF, LA, NYC, you name it. The standard response she got, even while inquiring about it in Mandarin, was "We don't make peasent food here," with a scoff. For about a decade after her years in China she fruitlessly sought after this dish (and a couple of the other peasent food options from her village). But her efforts were not rewarded. Until one year a random, amazing wonderful chef put ETT on the menu of his new little endeavor in my wife's hometown. This dish will warm your tummy and soul.

We just had to go back to Shan. We wanted to try more dishes and revisit our faves from our last experience here. The service was as excellent as before. Hubby had the lamb skewers which was a special and said they were super tender and bursting with flavor. They had been braised and then grilled. We shared the Changsha Cold Noodle dish. It was spicy (not too) and refreshing at the same time. We again sat at the community table as we couldn't get a reservation until 8:30pm and we were hungry at 5pm when they opened. They're busy for good reason.

Food: - Bison Ribeye 11/10 Must Try cooked medium rare it's so good - Laz-ji chicken wings 5/5 chili peppers with peanuts and so crispy and delicious and they give so many of them! So worth it! - Dan Dan Noodle 4/5- the flavors are good but the noodles were soggy by the time they came out, chili oil on the side was bomb! Dessert: - Coconut and Pandan Tres Les cake 5/5 so good and fluffy! Milky!! Service; Great customer service! Our service Ryan was awesome!!!! Thank you for being such an awesome Server! Food came out so quickly too!! Ambiance: Super modern! Nice to go on a date and or with friends! Highly recommend!!!! Come here and taste the amazing flavors of Thai and Chinese! Wish I was close by to come back! We will be back again!

This place is DA BOMB!! It's basically a mixture of Asian fusion/Thai/Chinese goodness with the concept of tapas but just larger portions that are meant to be shared. Everything we got was so delicious!! Tamarind ribs - delicious! Tender and smoky and amazing flavor Bison Tofu - herbaceous and the Szechuan peppercorns added a nice flavor and kick to it. Pairs well with rice! Cumin lamb noodle - light, explosive flavors that is just so good in every bite Didn't expect to find this kind of place in Bozeman. I will definitely come back here on my next trip to Bozeman!!

I was in Bozeman for a week snowboarding and this was definitely a highlight, but had its drawbacks. The restaurant had a good vibe, but they played the music incredibly loud, we couldn't hear the server telling us the specials and had to talk very loudly to converse. The food was great. I was with a group and we tried several dishes, all of us had a different favorite so hard to say which stood out to our group. The duck rice was surprisingly our least favorite, the cucumber salad was surprisingly very delicious. Unfortunately they were out of the tamarind ribs and lamb dumplings, but our res was for 830pm so I can't hold that 100% against them. I can't name everything we had but all were unique and very flavorful. One thing that left a bad taste in my mouth wasn't the food, but the fact that my friend ordered a beer and they brought out the last half beer from the keg. Typically when this happens, the last half beer of the keg is on the house. We were surprised to see they charged for half the price of a beer to our bill. That's just bad business. But overall I would go back here while visiting Bozeman, but would go a little earlier, hope they turn the music down a bit, and hopefully they don't continue charging for half beers.

Now that I've had about everything on this menu, a review is in order. My experiences at Shan have been great. The place is a Bozeman standout, a first-class awesome Asian fusion place worthy of a much bigger market. The ambience is lovely: elegantly wood paneled, tasteful furnishings and art all around. It can be a little on the noisy side (it's always been full when I've visited), but if you're hard of hearing there are a couple of nooks that make conversation easier. Service is snappily professional and friendly. Servers know what they are serving and offer helpful descriptions. Although it's always jammed, service time is quick and well paced. And the food, oh Lordy, the food. Sumptuous tamarind pork ribs, silky broths, curries full of character, delicately stewed meats, awesome vegetables. Plenty of wonderful flavors new to my palate. There are no fillers--it's like every component has a specific purpose. It is fun to order a variety and share family style. The tropical tres leches is not to be missed if you're up for dessert. This kitchen is firing on all cylinders! You're going to pay a good bit for a meal at Shan, but I've never found myself questioning the price for the quality (or quantity). Best plates in Bozeman, in my experience. Probably the best Asian food of any kind I've had anywhere.

It is nice to see that Bozeman has a Chinese option now, even if it is a modern take on some classic Asian dishes. Shan is located inside an industrial type building with other restuarants/bars inside. We arrived just after 5pm on a Wednesday with no reservation and were able to get seated at the bar with no wait. I was surprised that we got in as it was the day before July 4 and the town was busy. I would definitely recommend getting a reservation here as it does get busy. We started off with the cucumber salad. I loved the addition of the cilantro and chili oil with the large slices of cucumber. It was perfect for the warmer weather. I do feel like there was a bit too much salt on this dish. Next up was the Cumin Lamb Noodles. Again, I appreciated the adition of cilantro here as lamb noodles can get a bit heavy. I do feel like most dishes were on the saltier side and I was reaching for my glass of water after most bites. The noodles were perfectly al dente and chewy with a nice spring to them. We also got the pork wing soup and a lamb special dish. The soup had a very strong taste of lemongrass I believe. I don't personally like lemon grass so this was a pass for me. However, my husband loved this dish and said he wished it was cooler so that he could enjoy the soup properly. It would also be good with a bowl of rice. The lamb dish had pieces of meat that were super soft and you didn't even really need to bite it for it to dissolve in your mouth. It was very seasoned but again, would have been great with some rice. I really enjoyed the open kitchen concept and that the chef stopped by to chat. The dishes were on the saltier side but other than that, no complaints. I would not hesitate to make a reservation as soon as I knew I was heading back to Bozeman.

I lived in Montana for a month on business and this was the best meal I ate, by miles. Aggressively ordered as a 3 top of women and every dish was flavorful, balanced, and worth of a repeat order. Really taken aback by the whole experience. Can't say enough good things. If I can make it back, getting back here is a top priority. Cheers.

If you want good Chinese food, this may not be it. If you want a spot where I guess folks are packing in, this may be an okay spot. Service was meh. We did walk in and got a community table. While we were waiting on our table to be set up, someone came by and asked if we had been helped. We asked if there was a bar area we could sit at and were told - they will need to check as there may be reservations. As we walked to the community table, 75% of bar seating was empty... We sat down and ordered our food. And asked them few moments to decide on the wine. Our food came by pretty quickly, after we were almost done eating the server came back asking if we wanted any drinks. We decided to pass. We ordered the Dan Dan noodles and the pork belly. The food came in room temperature and was overly salty. I was famished so I ate my half. Husband left half his noodles uneaten. We decided to pick something else on our way to the final destination. The community table is loud so you won't be able to talk much without yelling at each other seated across.

Reservation is a must...then ease into the outstanding offerings on the menu. Each dish was so distinctly flavorful from the Lamb dumplings, Smoked Tofu, Earth's Three Treasures, & Sticky Tamarind Ribs along with a bowl of rice to savor the sauces of each. Definitely will be back to try the other intriguing offerings. Great atmosphere with very friendly & professional service!

The ambience is a fun place with classic rock music playing. The place is hopping and I would highly recommend having a reservation. Jordan, our server, was knowledgeable about the dishes and was able to provide great recommendations. The food is an Asian fusion with a twist. I was in town for one day. I was looking for a good Thai place, and this place came up. The restaurant is inside an office building looking place. I walked in and was seated at the bar quicky. No waiting. Nice. The waitress was nice and helpful. She gave me some ideas and helped me pick some great plates. I started with the soup of the day. Man, that was some awesome soup. Great flavor. Nice spices and vegetables. The main dish came out, and as good as the soup was, I thought I would just take it with me for tomorrow's lunch. The Khao Soi came out. I asked for a little rice for the dish. Everything was flavorful and plentiful. Good taste. (Just FYI. Everything is a la cart, so beware.) This was a huge meal for just one person so bring a friend. Great place for a date. Nice atmosphere. Good food. Great service. That's what I'm talking about. Recommend.

Everything was extremely tasty. Every dish seems to be very heavy and oily but I guess that's to be expected. However, this place definitely serves up some great flavors. Always packed and very hard to get in, which can be a negative.

This was my second time at Shan. My first visit was a perfect 10/10--the owner was fantastic and even connected me with Tane Chan at The Wok Shop in Chinatown. The food and service were absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, tonight was a completely different experience. The host was incredibly rude from the start, telling me to "have a seat, and we'll try to fit you in" with no warmth or hospitality. When he finally did seat me at the community table, his attitude was just as unwelcoming. I didn't mind sitting between two big groups--I enjoy chatting with people--but I was completely forgotten. I sat there for a long time with no acknowledgment from the staff. After waiting far too long without so much as a greeting, I just left. It was a disappointing experience, especially after such a great first visit.

Very flavorful dishes! We come to Bozeman often from NYC and each time I am more and more impressed with how wonderful the food scene is getting here. Not sure if it was only the dishes we chose, but the spicy dishes are not for the faint of heart. We got the chicken wings (which exploded with flavor and spice), the skirt steak (also very complex spicy flavors), and the pork ribs (not as much spice but still packed with flavor). We loved them all!

Best and favorite restaurant I've ever been too. From the atmosphere (cozy, funky), service (outgoing and quick) and delicious food.. this place is so awesome. I usually don't sit at the bar (just preference) but it honestly was a part of the experience. Need to get the dumplings!! Would come back to Bozeman just for this place.

It was packed and all reservations were taken. They have a long community table for walk-ins. Goof was served family style and comes out as it's completed. Everything we had was great! Only criticism is it is very loud and midi. Is loud. Only negative from us, it others may. It find that as a negative.

Come here all the time and generally have a fantastic meal experience, but the last was not great due to a few things - the special steak was a very poor cut of meat for $65, the fish sauce was overpowering in several dishes (don't order beef larb if you don't like fish sauce), along with some other things that generally are good so I don't want to drag the restaurant for some outlier quality control issues. The other complaint is out of the 8+ times we have been, the dumplings have been sold out 80% of the time. I understand building excitement around them, but if you are running into this issue every night at a decent hour, perhaps prepare more so you have some ready for the people who are paying good money and likely made a reservation. With that said - the dan dan noodles,chicken khao soi, lamb dumplings (when you can get them), duck rice soup, cucumber salad, and tres leches are to die for. Would like to see a few more items on the menu for less sophisticated palettes.

5 star food! What a neat little treasure of a restaurant. I'm a foodie, but especially and Asian food connoisseur and I was extremely impressed. My specialty is cucumbers and this place had the best cucumber salad I have ever tasted. I had to go watch the guy make them. Read the story on this restaurant so you can appreciate the history of the owners. I believe it's a James Beard Nominee restaurant. Coming back, hoping it never leaves!!

This was my first time at Shan and it lived up to its great reputation. I was thrilled to meet a friend there that I hadn't seen in a while and catch up. The food was beautiful and came out quickly, the service was great! Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, the waitress came over to say, "not trying to rush you, but we have a reservation here for your table." Grated we were there for a bit over an hour, but... it kinda killed the vibe as we had to down our wine, scarf the desert and get out. Worth going! Just know, even if you make a ravaging, you're on a tight timeline.

One of the best experiences we had in the Cannery District. Food was delicious, we decided jointly what dishes to get and share family style. Ordered the Green Curry, chicken soi, bbq ribs and the bone in steak off the special menu...we enjoyed their wine and beer selection. Service was phenomenal, courteous, attentive and informative. The ambiance was hip, a fusion of Thai and Bozeman in perfect balance. Thank you for such an excellent experience.

Shan is an experience ... not just a meal! Atmosphere is cozy , service is amazing and the food is meant to be shared! The flavor profile on each dish is different and all were delightful. We were a party of four hoping to try the often talked about and rarely seen dumplings but we were too late . This is a great spot for a night with friends or a date. Be prepared to share!

Top tier restaurant in Bozeman. Really good. Some of the dishes are heavy, I don't recommend getting a heavy appetizer with a heavy main dish - made that mistake once and felt gross after. But aside from my poor planning skills it's great. Dislike this district, feels like a huge parking lot with a strip mall; wish the builders did a better job :/ but despite that there are some good restaurants here and this one is probably the best of the options.

First of all, others in our party loved it. I'm not a fan of "family style" and was not aware this was their thing. Portions were small, although affordably priced. I wanted steak, but on general principle won't pay $65 unless at a fine dining restaurant. It took 5 orders to feed 4 people. Music was too loud. Wait staff was really good. I guess you have to fake it until you make it....Shan seems like they're trying.

Finally visited Shan on a date night. After living in Shanghai, China, I never thought I would taste such authentic Asian Cuisine again. The Dan-Dan noodles are EXCELLENT! (SPICY SO BEWARE - but delicious!) We had the jerky as well and it was excellent. Was seated at the bar and had a great time watching the kitchen and talking with the servers! Great place to get great food!

Shan is my favorite restaurant in Bozeman. The dishes are innovative, delicious, and always so incredibly well-executed. Fun ambience, great leftovers ;) It's a special place to take visitors or treat yourself on the regular. I feel lucky we have this culinary experience in town!

Second time dining here since their expansion. Im a local and dine at many Bozeman restaurants. My only complaint here is with the receptionist (long dark hair) who greeted us very rude and impolite. It really put a bad taste in our mouth which really isn't pleasant right before dinner. Everyone and everything else was really good! Great food and service :)

The wings reminded me of flavors of my mom cooking with peanuts and Chana great street food flavors from India. Dan Dan was also good can't wait to go back and try more food

We had a wonderful time eating at Shan. Everything we ordered was wonderful and only the Dandan noodles had some spice. We never discussed spice levels with our waiter but everything came out at a great level (around a 2/5). Our favorite was the Dandan noodles, followed closely by the bison Mapo tofu and the earths three treasures. We also got a special of the night - pork belly - also delicious. You definitely should make a reservation as the space is small and fills up quick! Excited to go back and try more items for sure!

Food was good, you should not go here if you aren't into bold flavors and spices. We ordered beef curry, chicken wings, Dan Dan noodles. The curry was the best I'd ever had. It was like gravy. The wine list is impressive. I love this place!

Must dine at when you come to Bozeman! Atmosphere was great. Small cozy place that was modern and everything was meticulously placed, in the dining room and kitchen. Just a little touch I always like. The food was incredible, each dish better than the next. Prices were great, definitely paying for quality without breaking the bank. We ordered quite a few dishes and it was all excellent. The kind of bites of food that make you day-dream about the next time you'll be coming back. The staff were very friendly, knowledgeable and sharp through and through. A very well oiled machine both front and back of house. The owner Jared was there slingin' out food but also made his presence felt in the dining room by talking in detail about the food and his story. I really enjoyed his conversations and hospitality. It was the cherry on top of a 10/10 must try and go back to experience!

Well deserving of its recent recognition as one of 10 finalists for the James Beard Award for best new restaurant in the country, Shan has quickly established itself as one of a small handful of essential Bozeman eateries. The food is amazing, often featuring local farms and ranches. The service and vibe are welcoming and casual. The chef/owners are lovely people who are committed to their craft. Eat here.
