The Best Happy Hours in Vancouver, Washington | Eater Portland

"Shanahan’s is where locals go for inexpensive drinks and hearty fare in a low-key, Irish-inspired, thoroughly classic American neighborhood bar, complete with heartfelt bathroom graffiti, a pool table, and a lifelike painting of The Dude. The popular Shany fries — a mixture of tots and fries coated in melted cheddar cheese, bacon bits, scallions — are $8 and served with a side of ranch. The $9 Irish Nacho is a plate of potato skins topped with tender corned beef, sauerkraut and melted cheese. Drinks specials change daily; prices hover around the $5 to $10 mark. Upscale beverages, like fancy whiskeys, are available next door at The Infirmary." - Anastasia Sloan

The Best Irish Food and Drinks in Portland, Oregon and Its Suburbs | Eater Portland

"This Vancouver neighborhood bar has a relaxed atmosphere with more than 20 beers on draft, pool tables, and arcade games. While much of the menu focuses on sandwiches and generic bar snacks, Shanahan’s offers a braised corned beef hoagie with horseradish sauce and beer-battered Alaskan cod fish and chips, plus Irish American standards like “Irish nachos.” Those into the distilled elements of Irish pub culture should head to the Infirmary, the adjacent sibling to Shanahan’s; the bar features more than 250 varieties of whiskey, including several of Ireland’s finest. The Infirmary also offers a wide range of cigars that can be enjoyed on the smoke-friendly patio."

Where to Find an All-Star Happy Hour in Vancouver

"Shanahan’s isn’t a place for craft cocktails and chef-y small plates; this is where locals go for inexpensive drinks and hearty fare in a low-key, Irish-inspired, but thoroughly classic American neighborhood bar, complete with heartfelt bathroom graffiti, a pool table, and a lifelike painting of The Dude. The popular Shany fries — a mixture of tots and fries coated in melted cheddar cheese, bacon bits, scallions — are $7 and served with a side of ranch. Google
They have a happy hour that goes till 7:00 and the food is pretty good you get very healthy portions people are friendly easy to talk to I had no wait for the table they have handicap parking immediately next to the door. They have a back room with a big screen TV they also have pool table.

I’ve been coming here for 3+ years now. Finally writing a review. This is the best “bar” food in the Vancouver downtown/uptown area. The staff truly cares about serving good food. They take care. From the carefully blanched fries, to the corned beef, to the burgers. Everything is phenomenal. The drinks are very reasonably priced. And the bar staff is great. Good food. Good drinks. And good local crowd. Not much more I could ask for.

Love this pub! The loaded tots and fries were the bomb. Really enjoyed the differences in the Infirmary and the pub.

Google
We were looking for a dog friendly establishment one Saturday morning after checking out the Saturday Market. We had come across this place but didn’t know if it was pet friendly. Went inside and talked with the bar staff and they confirmed their outdoor patio seating area was dog friendly. It was prefect. You had to order at the bar which was no big deal. It was between breakfast and lunch time. We ordered Irish Nachos & Biscuits & Gravy and dog patty for our doggies. Ordered a peach mimosa and a beer. My mimosa came with a beautiful garnish and was quite tasty. The food was wonderfully presented and tasted pretty yummy. Would highly recommend giving it a shot!

Google
They are dog friendly so that was great! We were able to sit at the outdoor patio. I liked all of my food and they have a good draft selection. Garlic cheese bread was lit. Fried pickles were also super tasty. Food didn't take too long. We went on a weekday lunch time. Definitely recommend.

Google
Kind of an Irish pub/roadhouse. They have one of the better valued happy hours in Vancouver. It's not fine dining but the large variety of items available on the happy hour menu is the best I've seen (3-7pm).The sausage and pretzels are good. I like how salty the pretzels are. My wife likes the mild sausage. I like the smoked chicken quesadilla without the BBQ sauce. The cod tacos are good. We don't care for the caprese salad but the Cesar looks much better. The Irish nachos are yummy. The mac & cheese with corn beef are a huge hit. The club sandwich is ample and excellent. I like that it's only two pieces of bread. Onion rings are ok. The garlic cheese bread is like a grilled cheese sandwich and is wonderful. The sliders are not great. They have some kind of jelly on them. Also the buns are very dry. Only pedestrian cocktails at best. They make a pretty good bloody Mary. The Stairway stout is very good. Ample parking. The Infirmary, next door has far better spirits. Check my other reviews to find great eateries. and craft cocktail bars. -VanPort Insider✌🏼

One of the last relics left of old Vancouver. Go here to experience Vancouver of yesteryear. This bar is fantastic. Great service, alcohol, and food! Never a miss.

Yelp
This used to be one of my favorite places yo drop in for a quick bite. We just had an awful meal. I ordered fish tacos. The fish was not edible. It was super salty and looked like it had been fried more than twice. My partner had the fish n chips. It was better but he didn't enjoy it. The fries were limp and soggy. So long to what once was a jewel.

Yelp
Was looking for something that served food late and this was a top recommendation from several people. Popped in around 9:30 on a Saturday night and this place was buuuusy! There was a private party that booked out the entire back room so we opted for one of the booths in the main room. Menu had quite a bit of options but let's give you the rundown of what we ended up ordering for 4 people: Rib Dinner Special: for $19 I expected a lot more ribs. The plate came with 2 ribs, a chunk of super dry cheddar jalapeño corn bread, chunky potato salad, and meh collard greens. Ribs were meaty but left much to be desired. Corn bread needed to be slathered with butter to be edible. Potato salad had way too much going on. Collard greens were lacking so much. I would definitely never order this again. Irish Nachos: $12 This was pretty epic. 4 potato skins heavily layered with shredded corned beef, cabbage, and cheese. Served with a side of sour cream. Definitely the best thing we ate at Shanahan's! 2 pounds of buffalo wings: Super salty frozen wings from restaurant depot smothered in salty buffalo sauce served with 2 sides of blue cheese dressing. Should have just gotten 1 pound to try. Would definitely not have ordered these if I knew they were the frozen stuff from restaurant depot. Appetizer sampler: $18 a mix of mozzarella sticks, fried mushrooms, onion rings, jalapeño poppers, and chicken tenders. Again, just a big mix of different fried stuff from restaurant depot's frozen section. Definitely not worth $18 for the small basket of stuff they serve you. Total for all of this plus 3 beers was $99 + tip. Pretty pricey for a bunch of fried up frozen food. I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone that I like.

Yelp
Came here to have some St Patrick's day meal and play pool. Tables had nice felt, but they could use some more in house cue sticks. Bartender was a sweet woman and I had no complaints about her service. I would like to come back here again for pool, food and beer.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been coming here for years and I've always had excellent service. The way they run their bar is prompt and they're always so nice, even if there is a long line you'll never wait a long time! I ordered the blt and had a solo date outside just relaxing. Food is always great, and priced well, and drinks are strong. I do wish they had music outside, but, nonetheless, one of my fave spots in town!
google avatar

Yelp
Huge fan of the value here! Didn't end up ordering a main dish, but saw others order, and their portions look great. Burgers and salad looked really good. I did end up eating onion rings and fried pickles. Food was made piping hot which was a huge plus. The finger food was great with beers, so definitely be sure to order up! Comedy section in the back...as well as another whiskey bar, with a more upscale feel. Definitely a go to spot for Vancouver folks. Lots of seating inside and outside. Limited parking in the lot, but street parking also available.

Yelp
Truly the last relic of old Vancouver and one of the few spots with a soul, as most of Vancouver has now become one big multi-use apartment complex. Go here if you need to feel something special.

Yelp
Shanny's is a 5 star dive bar. The kitchen produces a consistent product. Some of the specials have been incredible. This place has a very loyal customer base. Older more mellow crowd early, louder later.

Yelp
Brunch was amazing. I have been twice now, recommend the chicken fried steak. The hash was good as wll!

Yelp
*Update* Happiness begets happiness. I am grateful for happy hour and for the bar ladies who forever pour heavy, fantastic drinks and the kitchen crew who always produce delicious dishes. Go to happy hour, it's 3-7 daily. The hummus plate is my favorite. Its fantastic. The smoked chili fries are my guys new fave. They are delish. Sorry, I'd write more but I'm still here and still wanting more drinks!! Cheers :)

Andria N.

Yelp
They have really good food in good drinks and I'd highly recommend it. You could stop in for a cocktail or stop in for dinner. It's always a good stop to make.

Yelp
We frequent this place quite a bit because we like the food and haven't really had issues. Staff hasn't always been so friendly but yesterday one of the female bartenders charged someone's food and drinks on my tab and I didn't realize it until after I paid because my husband went to go pay his tab and I told him everything was paid for on my tab. Come to find out I had paid for someone else's food and drinks, so I go to the bar to fix it and the female bartender basically tried to argue with me about it and someone stepped in, I'm assuming maybe her manager. So glad she stepped in because she voided everything I paid for and fixed my bill to make sure I was only charged for the items I ordered. She also apologized and was nice about it. The bartender who made the mistake did not apologize or take any accountability for it and was rude about it. This place is good for food but the staff, not so much.

Shane P.

Yelp
Food is great. Staff on Friday, and Saturday nights is terrible. two of the rudest bartenders in town. And the drinks are weak.

Yelp
This is a go to spot for my friends and I for a quick drink or weekend brunch! They have a build your own Bloody Mary bar on the weekends for $10 and comes with a slice of bacon.. so many toppings and so delicious! I usually get whatever specials they have and everything is always so tasty and comes with a lot of food! The staff is very friendly and food always comes out quick. They have a large outdoor patio which can get filled up on the weekend nights but it's a very fun and social place to hangout!
google avatar

Yelp
Group of coworkers and I went to Shanahans because of the laid back atmosphere we assumed it had. Definitely a Biker Bar in the Midwest sense. If you're looking for the opposite of fine dining but still with delicious food, give it a try. While everything I had except the beer was fried, it was piping hot when delivered, and it was fried perfectly. Awesome portion size and quality. The outdoor seating area was great....as were the prices for what you're getting. I was disappointed that online it said they had draft Bud Light. They only had bottles...but I made do with draft Coors. We had a nice experience!

Yelp
DIRTY HAIR FOOD Had to convince some friends to check this place out with me, due to the bad reputation. I was hopeful. We waited an eternity in line for drinks. The servers were really short and rude for no particular reason. Later went back up to wait again to order food. Plate came out with a big... beard or pubic hair on the plate? Our group all were so grossed out no one really had an appetite after that and picked at the food nervously, so we waited yet again to close out and head to a cleaner place (literally any of the other bar/restaurants down town). Won't be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Co workers had been here before and they raved about it. So I had to go. This place didn't disappoint!!! The wings where out of this word. We also ordered some fries which were really tasty we ordered jalapeño poppers which where ok. Then we ordered the Irish nachos these where out so delicious!! The ambiance is a bar scene with pool tables. It was a really nice place.

Yelp
I've been coming for many years and it's always great! The steak bites, humus plate and shanny fries are delicious! Highly recommend
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
Food is always good, service has been very good, and has a very inviting atmosphere, along with the whiskey bar next door.

Tyierre Z.

Yelp
The absolute BEST wings I have ever had, 2 pounds for $20 you can't beat it, I crave these wings constantly, perfectly crispy but soft and fall of bone inside and they're big wings a lot of meat
google avatar

Yelp
Some girl who works there stuck her tongue out at me! Food is great and the drinks are strong.

Yelp
Dear Shanahan's, I love you!! Strong drinks, nice people & good ass food. Happy hour is 3 to 7 every day and the food is delicious. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Here are some of my favorite happy hour eats: Steak bites $7 (during happy hour), 5/5 stars - tender, flavorful steak paired with mushrooms. I always swap out the horseradish for ranch. So so delicious! Hummus plate $8 (during happy hour), 5/5 stars - always way bigger than I expect. Tasty hummus. Great for sharing with the table when you want to graze. Caprese salad $7 (during happy hour), 5/5 stars - fresh mozzarella and even fresher tomatoes and greens. It's a win EVERY TIME. Mini Cesar salad $4 (during happy hour), 5/5 stars - Solid af Alaskan cod tacos $8 (during happy hour), 5/5 stars - yum! Sausage and pretzels $8 (during happy hour), 5/5 stars - I forget how good this is and forget to order it but it's the perfect snack to soak up the booze and keep the party going responsibly hahaha Smoked chicken quesadilla $7 (during happy hour), 5/5 stars - yum! Non happy hour food is also delicious. I really like the blt, fried mushrooms, chicken strips, burgers...... basically you name it they have it and it's solid af. Tip your bartender heavy, buy the kitchen a round for $6 and don't be a jerk & you'll love it here too.

Yelp
This place is starting to become one of my go to places as it has a huge outdoor space with cover and heaters to drink outside. One of my buddies refuses to go to a bar and sit inside and drink so we sit outside an freeze. At least your beers stay cold. Lol Misty the bartender here is so sweet and nice. She pours a good shot too. They have a good selection of beers as well on tap. The food has gotten consistently more better than when I recently first went there. I will be back.

Yelp
Background: I've been doing stand-up comedy since 2011 and have performed coast to coast. Went there to perform for the open mic. This was the second time I attempted to go to this. The first time, I was told the host "didn't show up." Tonight the host was there. Got a drink from the friendly bar staff and perused the menu which looked great. There weren't a lot of people in the comedy room so I took it upon myself to post on Facebook comedy group letting comedians know there was stage time and making the rounds at the tables letting customers know there was comedy. Then I took the stage. I'm exhausted and this is an open mic with all comics and TWO audience members on a date. So I focus on them. I open with a racial joke about a zebra I clearly say was not my joke but was told to me and later follow it up with the first one liner I ever wrote. Now this one-liner was written in 2005 when I was still teaching in the USAF and before I officially started comedy, but one of my students put it up online in 2005 and it's been attributed "anonymous" ever since and by the time I realized it was online it was too ubiquitous to change. It's the ONLY joke I've ever written that was out online. The set goes OKAY (for a crowd of two) and I get off the stage. At which point the host (who is 3+ beers deep and stalling for time so more actual audience shows up...) calls me a hack. For stealing my own joke. Shanahan's is a great venue and the menu looked terrific, but I will not be back to that venue as long as they have that wastrel as their comedy host. Underbar in Vancouver has a way better crowd even if it is a smaller space, and I've never been called a hack there by a comedian with half my experience telling me I'm ripping off my own fucking jokes. Shanahan's is a cool bar but they lose four stars for letting this Asshat run their comedy show (and their business) into the ground.

Yelp
Stiff drinks and tall pours at criminally low prices. Massive, (partially) covered dog friendly patio makes for a fun social gathering place to meet with old friends or make new acquaintances after ingratiating yourself by fawning over all the handsome puppers! Shanahan's has been around a long time, and it always seems to be bustling with activity. I recall attending live music and open mic nights in the past; whether this is still the case these days, I can't say. My wife has informed me that their taco specials and unlimited bacon nights are absolute must trys! Uh...yes...yes, those both sound amazing. How have I never learned of these things before? If you're looking for a place to make new friends, shoot some pool, get your buzz on, or look for cute dogs to kidnap, this is your place!

Michael ..

Yelp
Decided to try someplace new tonight for dinner. Sat down at our booth only to discover that you have to order and pay for your food at the bar before you get it. While ordering I asked the bartender what came on the salad I was ordering she replied that she didn't know it was the cooks job to know what went on the food. Ordered the sirloin steak salad it had lettuce and some tough fatty cheep steak on it not worth the $18 they charge. Also ordered their popular smoked chili it came out cold and it is not good. We will definitely not be coming back here.

Cyndi S.

Yelp
If you like big fat wings yes. If you like making your own bloody Mary, yes. Have to order your food at bar, not a big win for me
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
COMPLIMENTS TO THE CHIEF!! Dan/David who ever made my club sandwich umm... the best sandwich i have ever had. It all seemed like simple ingredients but man, ill drive 30 min to get this on the regular. The bread was toasty buttery, the ham/turkey was just so juicy and sweet (not weird sweet) and the sauces on it were such a good combination. Just so good. Drinks are also delicious and a good price. Forget that they are stronger in WA than PDX. But themselves are very good. Wait staff and bartender were also so so nice! Waiter joked with us and talked with us and made it a good time. I feel like that kinda makes a place when you feel good about the company. The place its self, very fun! had games and pool and stuff all over the wall. Just a fun place to hang and drink. Specials change but $3 rum and coke? sounds like a good time to me!

Emma S.

Yelp
Unfortunately the service was really unfortunate. I paid for my drink and the bartender never made it. I walked away prematurely without my drink (definitely my mistake). My husband then went up to say I made a mistake and didn't grab my drink. The bartender then said I never paid for it and refused to make the drink. I never got my drink and was charged 10 dollars. I understand it was busy but the way we got treated here was not acceptable at all.

Daniel S.

Yelp
Best wings in Vancouver. Always a great time with good people and good bar food. Happy hours are the best.

Valenina G.

Yelp
Food is good, service is ok. Calling to place orders for pick up is near impossible. I've called them to place an order on multiple week nights where they either let the phone ring, don't pick up and after I've called 3-4 times and once I've insisted they finally pick up and don't say anything leaving you with only bar background noise . On one of the calls they picked up said hello and then just left the phone and hung up moments later. Then call back to get a busy tone. I get being busy but you can at least be courteous and ask someone to wait.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
We went on St. Patrick's day - so taking that into consideration. They handled the MASS influx of people so well. The customer service was awesome and friendly and the front door security guy was really fun to talk to while you waited in line. We ordered a shepherds pie, which was pretty good. It's a cool little divey Irish place.
google avatar

Kekai N.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVE this place. We ordered a bunch of stuff to share... steak bites, steak salad, Irish nachos, a burger... Everything tasted great. The entire staff was friendly & attentive. Huge outside patio area. I can't wait to go back there & try more off the menu. Also starring the patio there is a whiskey & cigar room. This place rocks!!!

Mickey T.

Yelp
My husband retired June 30, 2023, but without a fantastic retirement party at Shanahan's who took care of all of the food which was EXCELLENT and plentiful. The employees were amazing - helping with moving tables, etc., and one of them actually drove to Safeway to buy ingredients to make buttercream frosting for a few cupcakes that were damaged by a case of water sliding on top of them during my transporting. I cannot say enough awesome owner David Cookson and his amazing employees. Again, my highest recommendation to anyone looking for a large venue with great food and a great staff. Dave was so easy to work with and his prices were very affordable. Kudos and my heartfelt thanks to Shanahan's.

Yelp
I am from out of town, Florida to be exact. I was hoping for at least 10 friends to show up and socialize. We had 12 show up. We ended up spending most of our time in the adjoining business called the Infirmary. We arrived, settled in, grabbed a few cigars, ordered a few whiskeys off the shelf of 650 selections available - our bartender Joe took great care of us. I was pleasantly surprised to find Joe here, as he has worked at another favorite place of ours, in the past, when we lived in Vancouver and his customer service is AWESOME. Our bill was just over $190 (which is very reasonable for a group like this) plus the $100 tip for our caretaker! Thanks Joe.
google avatar

Tom R.

Yelp
Walk right on past Shanahan's, and go to the Infirmary. We've had only snacks there but they were great. Food don't know about that all together. Service is great. The bartenders know their stuff. It's kind of a homey small town Barfield just like where they play that song "everybody knows your name" except yet they don't know our name I'm sure they will soon.
google avatar

Yelp
Hell yes...! A regular spot for cheap, but good bar food ( the steak bites are a personal fave;), known for stiff drinks, good vibes and a large outdoor patio space. A busy hangout on a nice day. Plusthey now also have the bonus of the connecting whiskey /cigar lounge for an upper scale taste bud. Good times at Shanahans!

Maxwell F.

Yelp
The Food just keeps getting better! Love coming here on weekends for their Brunch Specials.
google avatar

R S.

Yelp
Bar is reasonably priced. Servers make delicious drink. Has pool tables and outdoor seating. However, the liquor and beer service is based on line formation. Personally, I didn't like the fact that smoking was allowed indoors. Food was greasy and below the quality of other bars I have visited. This is a typical Local town Bar.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Love Shanahan's! The food is always great, the drinks are poured heavy and still affordable, the service and staff are fantastic as well! We also love their dog-friendly patio and attitude and love bringing our pup here with us. Shannys is the best!

Yelp
Came here for the first time early Saturday afternoon. I work in the service industry and I work a lot. So I needed a day to hangout, drink relax. We had a good time here and decided this might be our new spot! Great food, ambience and fast drinks. Bartenders seemed nice. We leave to check out a few other spots (we're new in town) then come back later that night. Me and 2 men walk up to the bouncer and before we even get close to the door the bouncer yells at me "NOPE!" Then turns to the guys I was with and said "nope she's swaying when she walks no way, but you guys can come in". Like what?!? He got so defensive, like we were arguing with him about it when we literally didn't open our mouths yet because we just walked up. I was so caught off guard I took a step back to think "AM I that drunk?!!" Because I work in the service industry I know how important I is not to over-serve someone who looks drunk and how much responsibility that carries. But this bouncer was RUDE AND INCREDIBLY inconsiderate. I would've appreciated any other way of communicating that. Just because I'm "walking weird" doesn't mean I'm not human, or that I'm blacked out and won't remember. Be nice to others, because this man truly ruined me night and my one day off. We went over to the infirmary not knowing it was part of the same bar, and the bouncer RAN so fast to stop us from coming in. It was actually comical. We won't come back here.

Tori H.

Yelp
We love it here! Live less than a block away and have been Atleast 10 times since we moved here. We love Sis! We love the drinks and their happy hour. Incredible food, and the patio has heaters and allows doggies. Whisky bar next door is incredible too, if you go on a Friday the amazing bartender is usually cooking house made apple syrup and it smells incredible
google avatar

Rose D.

Yelp
First time in. Fried mushrooms were good and came out quick. I had the smoked pastrami BBQ sandwich was good. The hoagie roll it came on was very soft, in a good way. I chose coleslaw as the side and their coleslaw was nice & tangy, just the way I like it (the smokehouse sammies come with your choice of side, but the other sandwiches on the menu do not...I'm not sure about the burgers, though). The Hubs had the Dubliner sandwich, which was delicious, and it was served on the same type of soft hoagie roll. The bummer about not being football fans is that inevitably you'll find yourself at a pub/sports bar right at lunchtime on a Sunday during football season. And that's when we were here for this first visit. So, they were understandably very busy and it was quite loud, both from the patrons and the audio of the game playing. But I'm not holding that against them.
google avatar

Don N.

Yelp
Always enjoy Shanahan's outdoor patio in the nice weather. The food is good. They like dogs. Good mix of ages, so it's not a meat market. The inside needs a makeover. Brighten up the place so there is motivation to come on the dreary days that we can't sit outside. The wait staff is always friendly which is a big plus.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is great, we've tried the specials, burgers, and appetizers and everything is very fun. The drinks are great, and the general atmosphere is laid back and easy. I wish I had more money and free time, I'd spend more time here!

Yelp
Good god, is this place still open, lol? Seriously, Maybe a good place to play a game of pool, grab a pitcher and a scotch egg.

Yelp
Always a great place for lunch. Crispy chicken salad is my go-to. It's big and delicious. Burgers and drinks are outstanding. Fun place with nice people. Neighborhood locals spot. I could go there once or twice a week if I could. Fish and chip are good too.

Yelp
Amazing bar food. The mushrooms will blow your mind. Friendly and attentive staff. Clean space. Nuff said.

Yelp
This is Christmas Eve and you have one bartender and one cook and one bar back. Poorly staffed. We did not ask for a second round and got ordered a second round. Walk in the bar and the door man cards me which I am ok with but then doesn't card others when they walk in, not cool. I used to work in a bar and you should card anybody that walks into a bar to at least make certain that they have their id! This bar is not what it used to be since Nate left!
