Shang Hai

Shang-hai, on every occasion I have visited, has always been satisfactory in every way I could hope for. The menu items that I order (Most often the orange/general tso chicken) come at a reasonable price, is very high in volume, comes out fast, and is always delicious. The ambiance of the establishment is always one to immerse me with my meal and never disappoints. This in conjunction with the cleanliness of the establishment ensures that I visit Shang-Hai regularly. I have but one request for this establishment, and that is to start equipping the tables with chop sticks, but this request is superficial at best. Shang Hai will be sure to fulfill all of your needs in a restaurant!

The food is amazing as always, when I picked up my order the were eating their dinner and it smelled fantastic. I asked what it was and they made me a bowl to take home ( it was real Chinese food) and omg . I was treated like family and felt very welcomed. Best Chinese food in Fargo!!!

I love the food here! It tastes great and they give you quite a bit for how cheap it is! The staff are really nice, the wait times are short, and the restaurant always looks so clean!

Placed an order for sesame balls, they weren't as good as my first post about them . Picture can tell , it was still tasty ( so I am keeping the 5 star) , but they weren't well coasted with sesame seeds as you can see. However it is the first time in years that I get a bad batch , so hopefully i get the same awesome ones that i normally get next time i order. I still like the place . Thank you

Overall, just didn’t think the food was that great. Nothing really had any flavor of any kind. The fried rice reminds me of the fried rice you get at some cheap mall Chinese food. The service was good. The girl at the counter was attentive and helpful. Food was hot & crispy and tasted of clean frying oil And came out relatively quick. Wouldn’t recommend but not a bad spot To at least try

Ordered for our company party on Christmas eve. The food was good but not what we ordered. The delivery driver got overly upset when I accidently handed him 20 less then what the order was. he then shouted "are you serious this is all you're giving me". I immediately handed him the proper amount. after realizing what I had done and asked him not to get upset with me. I then called to correct the order they stated I "lost" the money and we ordered wrong. but offered us 20 dollars and said they would bring extra food to make up for it. That was much appreciated but when I called back to get a receipt they then informed us they would not be delivering the extra food. I understand not having enough drivers and it being the holidays but don't promise what you can't do or at least call and let us know you cant instead of me calling and finding out. I dont know if we will be ordering again. I don't leave reviews often. I should state they offered for one of us to go and get the food but we couldn't leave while on shift today. again understandable but I felt it could have been handled differently.

Shang Hai has the best Chinese food in town. We moved to the north side and will happily drive across town foregoing all the closer restaurants for their Pineapple Fried Rice! Today we had Pineapple Chicken with Jalapeño and Orange Beef. We’ve never had a bad meal at Shang Hai.

My friend and I started going here this year. We have been about 4 times now and everytime the food is delicious. Best Chinese food in Fargo. It tends to be not very busy when it comes to dine in but when we eat there we see quite a few people come for pickup orders. I usually get the General Tso bento box with the egg roll, lo mien and sweet and sour chicken. Everything in the box is amazing and perfectly cook and such good flavor! It is a great amount of food for the price and I always have leftovers. Highly reccomend!

Terrible food! Just to say that we called to order food in we got soggy eggrolls, cold eggrolls we had wontons that had some kind of weirdness in it and they tasted and smelled like feet. We also ordered fried rice that tasted like vinegar and it.

I used to get chicken fried rice at Shanghai 3yrs ago pretty often. It used to come filled to the brim in a styrofoam container (2-3x the size of this order today) and $3 cheaper. Kinda disappointed in the size of this order of chicken fried rice considering the increase in price. Other than that, the food is just as tasty as I remember it. They also respect dietary restrictions and follow customer requests which is awesome. I always order the chicken fried rice without onions and every time I've picked up my order, it's made correctly (which you can't say about all places - they usually mess it up). So 4 stars for this order (1 star lost due to the decrease in size and increase in price).

This is our local Chinese restaurant and I'm so glad that this place is fantastic! We always get the beef and broccoli, lots of cream cheese wontons, sweet and sour, lo-mein etc. The food is always top notch. The restaurant is pretty small, not in a great location but we always get it to go. The staff is always friendly and very professional. The one thing I would say is that the cream cheese wontons used to be the best in town, but recently they haven't had much cream cheese in them. Other than that, no complaints from me!

Almond chicken was horrible and the happy family party tray was really disappointing, worst Chinese food I've ever tasted

incredible, authentic chinese food!!! the portions are gigantic and everything was so flavorful. we're visiting from seattle and this is still one of the best asian restaurants we've ever been to. the workers were extremely friendly and willing to adjust anything for your needs. no meat? no problem. the environment itself was beautiful too, they were preparing for a catering order and apologized for the mess but it was spotless! if you're visiting fargo or live by this, give it a try!!! we got the mapo tofu, curry chicken, and chicken egg foo yung-- definitely worth it!

Alright so let's break this down. I ordered food for my coworkers and I during lunch. My coworkers food was not impressive. Sweet and sour chicken were essentially the cheap chicken nugget "chinese food" you get from Walmart. Didn't even have the sauce on it. None of ours did. Lowest quality of ingredients, egg rolls were definitely the frozen type; the only thing mildly impressive were the crab rangoons and potstickers. I have to say as a normal person who is autistic friendly do not eat from here. Textures are god awful. I'm from the melting pot of the east coast so I know what it's supposed to taste like and my sesame chicken sauce was GOOEY. I now feel ill afterwards, had to cancel plans with a friend and one of my coworkers said they went to the restroom twice after eating it. Never eating from here again. As an Asian food enthusiast I am extremely disappointed in this place. Also if I have 4 meals why not give 4 fortune cookies? (One was broken, in my eyes that's bad luck.) In terms of service it was pick up and I asked if utensils were in the bag and dude said yeah. Thanks for lying. I didn't care to look into ambiance due to pickup reasons. Looked small.

The food was good and delivery was really fast. My niece loved the vegetable lo mein. The first time we ordered the cream cheese wontons were great. On our most recent order they were oddly missing the cream cheese. Otherwise, we were very pleased!

Some of the best Chinese take out in town. Have ordered many times and each one has been great.

This was the onLy Chinese restaurant that woulld deliver anything to me in Moorhead for under 30.00. And they delivered it in under an hour and the food was hot and delicious tipped the man 5.00 as well for their kindness

I know Christmas/Christmas Eve is always busy for restaurants but tonight's experience with Shang Hai was ridiculous. I was expecting delivery to be a long wait and was willing to wait an hour or so but after 2 hours, nothing. I called and they said they still hadn't made it yet and it'd be 45 minutes, so I said thanks and okay. Never showed up in 45 minutes so called again (3.5 hours waiting now) and was told my order was cancelled. Such bull crap and infuriating. So unorganized and not professional. I will never order here again, which is sad because I've been ordering from Shang Hai for several years.

I picked this restaurant based off of Yelp. At the time it was 4 stars and now I'm wondering how??? I was extremely disappointed. First of all, we were given menus that looked like lunch menus. You picked your entree per person and receive rice, soup and a drink. That would have been fine but we were there for supper!!! I went with my family and we expected to share the dishes like every other authentic Chinese restaurant we've been to. I'm Chinese so that's a lot of restaurants. Once we were done eating, the owner (who served us and came to our table multiple times) asked if we were Chinese. When we told her we were, she said "oh! There's a different menu for Chinese!" Oh so obviously the menu we were used to. The menu we received was apparently for non-Chinese people? Wait wait wait. Why are we segregating the food based on race?!????! And I'm going to say you can probably tell we're Chinese if you saw my family. So they should have asked us when we first walked in? But regardless, it shouldn't matter! I REALLY don't like that she said that. The food was actually good but I will never come back. No restaurant should give menus based on if you're Chinese or not.

Absolutely amazing and they deliver to us truckers. They say 30-40 mins but literally was like 15 minutes it's so hard to get food out here besides McDonald's and subway next time we are stuck here we will definitely be ordering again. And the staff was super nice and friendly and delivered right up to our truck door..

My family really likes Shanghai. Good food. Good service. Good dinner. Have not had a bad dish here yet. Really like the cream cheese wontons. Egg rolls are good. I like the GARLIC Chicken with fried rice.very good. My spouse likes the sesame chicken. Always good. Their General Tso's chicken is on the spicy side. But I like that too.

This place is so clean and the staff are super friendly. Food is made fresh and service is prompt. Will go back again. Could not ask for better service.

Our first time eating here. Restaurant was very clean and service was good. We ordered the cream cheese wonton appetizer which came to us pretty fast. I had the Beef Broccoli Combo and hubby had Chicken Broccoli Combo. Both came with choice or white or fried rice, and egg-roll. Took less than 5 minutes to get our food. It was beautiful and the veggies were cooked perfectly. Very yummy and we would definitely come back again.

In the land of mediocre Chinese buffets, Shanghai is an anomaly. It's an actual sit-down, full service restaurant, and it's good. I had a craving for Egg Foo Young one day, so a Yelp search and a short drive later and I found myself in this small restaurant in a strip mall. The place has about 8 booths and 4 or five tables and is pretty quiet inside. I knew what I wanted already, so I just needed to check the menu to confirm they had it. The menu was pretty well populated with the dishes you would expect, categorized into pork, beef and fish. I was really looking forward to the Egg Foo Young, because you just can't seem to find it here in Fargo. When the waitress arrived, I was so excited about the main dish, and so taken aback by finding an actual sit down Chinese restaurant in Fargo, I forgot to order any soup. So my first visit was going to be focused solely on the Egg Foo Young. Good thing, too, because they brought me a stack of them. Egg Foo Young is kind of like a frittata, egg blended with vegetables and cooked meat, all grilled together until the egg is browned, and then served with a savory brown sauce (sometimes a brown gravy, and I have found that is good, too). The common varieties are pork, chicken and beef but, you can sometimes find ham, as well. If they are done well, the vegetables are caramelized before going into the egg mixture - Oh, so good. Shanghai's wasn't the best I have had, but it was pretty good. They would do well to add some caramelized onions to their Egg Foo Young. Since that first visit, I have also had the Kung Pao Chicken and the Hot and Sour Soup. Both were good. So, you might be asking why I make all the fuss about the place being a sit-down restaurant. These places are good because they are the perfect place to share a meal with friends. Everyone can order a different dish and then you all share the large portions. A buffet just seems so assembly line and impersonal to me. You might go to a buffet for a quick lunch, but dinner is meant to be enjoyed with friends. I am definitely glad I found this place, and I will be back many times to come.

This is a great place to get a no-frills Chinese meal. All the standards are represented, everything you're used to, nothing you aren't. They do offer eat in, and the dining space is clean and comfortable, but sparse. Friendly service most of the time. I love reliably good Chinese food, and this place checks all the right boxes, enough to keep me coming back.

We've been ordering from Shanghai for years as it had always been our favorite. However, the last few times we've ordered we've been very disappointed. The food has lost all its flavor. The fried rice cant even be considered fried rice as it's basically white rice with a hint of yellow. No egg, carrots, peas or onions. The chowmein was more celery than anything and again had no flavor. Unfortunately, it all went in garbage (again) and we've learned our lesson and wont order again.

I ordered in from Shanghai. I had to use a second party delivery website to have it ordered in. The second party was beyond menu service. I got beef and broccoli and General tso chicken. The portions are on the smaller side and the beef with broccoli was surprising under flavored but the generals chicken was pretty good. The wait time for delivery took about an hour from order time to delivery. The establishment is located about three miles from me. I would probably pick it up next time. Over food was good.

It is a good place for individual and family. You can get lunch box and buff for individual, furthermore , family could order some food sharing with fun. Sometime, they also offer traditional Chinese food for the people who want to try.

Good wontons and great portion sizes for the price! I was not a huge fan of the fried rice but my Chicken Lo Mien was delicious!

BLAND! A couple of other reviewers said that they felt Shanghai has "Americanized" its menu. We have enjoyed meals from this restaurant before, but we won't be going back. I ordered Szechuan Beef, and it was completely without seasoning. Lots of beef & vegetables, but I was really disappointed by the lack of flavor.

It used to be a decent place for Chinese in Fargo, but as of recently it got really, really bad. Drive to Minneapolis if you want half-decent Chinese food.

Went for the lunch buffet. I just moved to Fargo from Grand Forks so i'm used to a large selection of buffet items. The selection is very thin here at Shanghai, around 12-14 items if I remember correctly. While I did not go during peak lunch hours as I went around 2pm the items were old and dry and they did not make any new items while I was there I would imagine during the busy lunch time they would have fresher items on the buffet. 9 bucks for a buffet and drink which was good but I would imagine there are other buffets in Fargo with a larger/fresher selection available.

If You're from Out of Town... Don't bother coming here. We were in Fargo for a few days and wanted to try a non-chain restaurant. Google reviews gave this place 4.4 out of 5, so I thought Shanghai would be worth a try. It was not. Also, I will never rely again on Google reviews for restaurant choices. I may be a bit of a Chinese food snob, but I know what is good and what is not so good. The food had very little flavor, other than a slight taste of ginger. The egg rolls were small and bland with very little filling. The chicken fried rice had an odd yellow color that I had never seen on fried rice before. Fried rice should have a smokey flavor to it; this did not. I don't enjoy giving a restaurant only one star, but I rely on reviews when dining on the road. At best, Shanghai should have an overall rating of two stars. It was fairly clean and nicely decorated, but if you're accustomed to tasty Chinese food, this is not the place to go.

We ordered 2 Combo meals, and 2 Bento boxes. We were staying at hotel nearby and had specifically for extra sauces for all above, plus extra rolls. A total of 6 egg rolls, plus 2 meals had sweat-n-sour chicken, plus 4 cheese wontons. Order timely ready when we arrived but specifically asked if extra sauces and was told abruptly they were in bag. Bag was stapled and when tried to open it to check told again it's all there. When we arrived back at hotel had we only had 4 soy sauce packets, 3 duck sauce, no hot chinese mustard for egg rolls. No napkins, no forks, plates, etc. I had asked for extar soy sauce just in case and was handed only. Had for fortune cookies and was handed only 3. Not sure but felt like we were being economized and didn't enjoy not having sauces for all of above. Spent $50 dollars for 3 adult meals and was not impressed. Check your delivery or order. before leaving. Seems so common economize on the meals these days.

Super disappointed. We used to get excellent food and now the last three times we've ordered it has been awful. Super bland.

Ordered the pepper steak. Was very bland, and the veggies were very undercooked. Pot stickers I ordered were also burnt. Definitely not happy with the taste of the food.

Extremely disappointed. Waited 30 minutes past the time the said it would be delivered - total of 1 1/2 hours and food was still not here. Called restaurant to cancel order as this was getting crazy and I told them I wanted to cancel and she asked me to hold on. THEN, she had the nerve to hang up on me. I don't care what the food tastes like, I will never try to order from there again!

I just order a delivery from this place and i just recieved some awful tasting food i will never order there again and when i called the service was really bad i couldnt talk with a manager or anyone in charge

I really loved the spring rolls- oh gosh the portion sizes were huge! I had the Pho Ga as well which was so good! I wish there were veggies in the Pho Ga- next time i am getting the tofu :) will for sure be back again

I have only lived in the FM area for a little over 6 years and always have a hard time finding good food here (pizza, especially, but I am from the Seattle area and food is a lot different there). Shanghai is the BEST Chinese food my husband and I have found here. They are quick to deliver, the food is hot and fresh and we would recommend it to anyone, anytime. :-)

This is our go to now for many years, Lots of food for a great price! You should check out their weekly buffet. Little limited but very good! Way cheaper than anywhere else for lunch! Never had a negative experience at this place.

All around bad experience. I was super hungover and all I wanted was some fried rice and lo mein. Not only did it show up late leaving me hungover and angry for what felt like ages, but when it did finally come it tasted terrible. To make the entire situation worse the fortune was irrelevant.

Wonderful Chinese Food, Lighter in flavors than you normally get. The place is clean with a nice looking buffet. My wife and I had the L-12 which is Chicken Chow Mien. Came with rice and a egg roll. We enjoyed the experience.

Can only speak to delivery service, but I won't be ordering from them again. Delivery was prompt and courteous, but the food was awful. Dumplings were really dry and needed a microscope to see the filling. Sesame chicken was way overbreaded and too sweet. Not a good experience.

the customer service was absolutely terrible!!! we ordered food that were missing a few items, and when we called to ask about it, the lady that answered, argued that they had it right, and they were not going to bring anything else. never will order from them again!!! i'll continue with 9 dragons!!!
