Came here for a friend’s birthday. The environment was cute. The Scallion Pancakes were light and flakey but filling. The Mushroom Salad was the best dish of the meal by far. The Spicy Beef Noodle Soup was amazing! It was perfectly flavored and the noodles were great. The Hunan Beef was fire. The Tender Chicken and Vegtable Hot Pot was pretty good but not mindblowing. It had a flavorful soup! The Vegetarian Jjamppong Noodle Soup was delicious but we wish there was a source of protien like tofu or something. The Singapore Vermicelli was really salty but not in a bad way. However, it did require water breaks. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was yummy. The Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup was decent and welll-portioned. We had an amazing server. We asked for 1 fork and she went above and beyond to get us 5. We really appreciated the extra effort throughout the meal.

A delicious spot offering a good variety of Asian dishes! Popular among Evanston locals and students, this restaurant gets quite busy, so food can take a little while to come out. I recommend getting different dishes to share so that you can get a taste of everything. We had the Taiwanese beef noddles, beef chow fun, seafood jjambbong, and salt and pepper calamari. The food was also freshly cooked and flavorful. It’s a bit pricey, but if you’re looking for another good Asian spot in Evanston, try Shang Noodle!

Found this place in Evanston while looking for another Chinese restaurant. I had the orange chicken, egg rolls and taro boba tea. The tea was terrible and definitely from a powder. Wasn’t sweet and tasted gritty. The egg rolls were delicious and so was the orange chicken. It was fabulous and had orange peel and a real orange slice in it. Had the perfect amount of chicken and coating ratio. It was a huge portion enough for 3 people. Service was also great. I plan on coming here again soon.

Visited this location a couple times and it's always been a great time. Food is delicious with big portions, always have leftovers to take home. The service is fast and attentive. On my last visit they had quite a few to-go and catering orders, but they were still able to take orders and serve food without much of a wait. Will definitely visit this location more and more in the future.

What a nice unassuming little place! The owner was so kind and helpful. There were 6 of us and she would tell us what she recommended and was so honest. Someone would ask about one dish and she would either say of yes, it is very good or she would say, no I do not like that! She was so funny. The service was quick and the portions were huge! The noodle bowl is something that two people can eat off of. The food was very fresh tasting and we found the prices to be reasonable especially for the amount of food you get. Will be coming here again next time we are in the area.

Great Chinese restaurant. Definitely check them out. Service staff is very nice. Food is authentic and good. They also have American options too. Decent prices. Was adventurous and wanted something authentic this time and had their pork intestine dry pot. Gave lots of intestine which tasted very clean and the spices were on point.

The food is good, we liked the Hunan Chicken and the Pork dumplings. Good service, they help you pack your to-go food for you!

This is a solid place to grab lunch or dinner with friends and family. I loved the walnut shrimp and black bean noodles! Service is pretty fast as well. It's a little crowded sometimes but nothing too crazy. Ambiance is also nice and the restaurant is really cute.

My family went there for birthday dinners this weekend. They have very spicy dishes, but their website mentioned that they would accommodate dietary needs. As I have a hiatal hernia and high blood pressure, we chose Shang over a similar restaurant. They made good on their word! I had a tame shrimp fried rice while my family enjoyed spicier choices. We made a reservation and were seating promptly. The place was full, but we were not rushed at all. The only negative thing I have to say is that the dishes came out one by one with some time in between. Judging from the clientele, the food must be very authentic! Lots of slurping!

Ordered take out. -Cha Jang Mein (Black bean sauce noodles): This was delicious with thick chunks of pork, shrimp, zucchini, cucumber & crunchy onion. Comfort food at its best. Very good but not the best I've had. -Northern style sweet & sour pork chop: If I was dining in, I would return this dish. It was completely tasteless. It wasn't edible until I added leftover Mc Donald's sweet & sour sauce to it. Zero seasoning. Not even salted.

Very closed to Wholefoods and the Northwestern University campus. Their food quality is absolutely beyond average. We order a Taiwanese beef noodles soup. It serves with at least 5 or 6 pieces of beef which is tender and juicy. The noodles are soft and full of flavor in the soup. Not too salty. Wood-ear salad is a must: flavor in vinegar and garlic and open your appetite. Seafood soup is also tasty and serves with a heating device for at least 20 minutes, which makes the seafood soup very very hot. Our waiter is a bit weird that he comes and bing in stuffs totally silently, without saying anything. We feel we are invisible.

I've been to Shang Noodle many times. The food is good and prices match the quality. Service is average. Why the 3 stars? I dined in tonight and everything was expected. They use Toast as their check out system. And you pay directly on the handheld machine which is good and bad. Good because you control your credit card. Bad because you don't see the sub-total, only post-tax and the tip pre-calculation percentages are set post-tax. Tip should NOT be post-tax! I mentioned this to the server and his reaction was smug and dismissive. He knew. His reaction did not sit well with me. They just lost a regular customer!

Disasterous ordering on Postmates. I called the restaurant after waiting 90 minutes for my food only to have a rude, condescending woman tell me that they don't use Postmates. She repeated said, "listen to me! Listen to me. We don't have your order." They DiD have my order and it Mdid eventually arrive, and it was very mediocre. Not worth the wait OR the hassle! Just tried them again and had to throw the food away it was shockingly salty!

What a great place to have some authentic delicious Chinese/Taiwanese food, in the heart of downtown Evanston. Whether you're a student, or not, definitely take the trek to Evanston to Shang Noodle & Chinese, where the food won't disappoint, the service great, and the overall dining experience being top-notched. We order the famous Jjajangmyeon (Noodles in blackbean sauce) which if you look at Yelp, there are dozens of photos of it; a crowd pleaser for sure. If you're looking for a great chicken dish, with jam-packed flavor, spice, and the perfect breading, definitely try out the dry red-chilli chicken. We topped off the fantastic meal with some pork belly soup. Our server was great... letting us two, pull together two tables, due to the amount of food we ordered. Our waters were filled constantly, and we were checked-up on several times. BATHROOM REVIEW: There is a mens and womens private bathroom. In the mens, it was extremely clean and spacious and contained a urinal, toilet, and even a chair to chill at, if you're all about having a conversation in the bathroom, or just wanted to lounge in a bathroom. No judgment here. Well, judgment with the bathrooms, as that's what I do. Sit or squat? Sit!

It's slightly more authentic than an Americanized takeout restaurant but too simple to be an authentic Chinese restaurant. The food is good, very quick, easy, simple Chinese food with flavor. The service at the Evanston location was good and it is usually busy. The only criticism I have is that the food is too simple when I expect more authentic Chinese food from the place. This is for the Evanston location. Tried the wood ear mushroom salad, great texture, very garlicky in a good way. Dry fried sizzling pork and green beans - excellent. Garlic chicken - generous with lots of mushrooms. Pleasant ambiance.

Good hip looking Chinese place with a cool vibe and intimate atmosphere. It's good for a cool dinner. Shang Noodle has a few spots including an Evanston location. Has something of an Americanized menu but that's not a knock. The prices are better than expected for a nice place like this. A lot of classic familiar Chinese American favorites are here. It's a nice change from the typical carryout Chinese restaurant. The prices are kind of higher, but the food is better and so is service. It has an older location in South Loop and there's another one in Streeterville for those eating in the city. This one that's located in Evanston one is newer, and fits in with the many Asian restaurants. Has a very nice bar where they can make fancy cocktails. Of course the food is the main attraction, and we chose a few favorites. We went here recently and I got the Kung Pao Tofu. It's about $15, but there was a lot of food. This had bell peppers, celery, dry red chilis, peanuts, and water chestnuts, and had quite a spice. It doesn't have a whole lot, but there's some vegetarian choices. There's also a sushi bar, and they make it all fresh. Find this on Davis Street near Chicago Avenue among many other cool looking cafes. It has better than expected prices. They not only have Chinese food, but also sushi.

This is our favorite Chinese restaurant in Evanston. Six of us had another great meal here. We made reservations thankfully since it became very crowded. We brought wine and they provided wine glasses. Had our usual Pom Pom wings won ton soup salt pepper shrimp and others. A wonderful dinner. They didn't rush us despite it being busy

I was having one of those "ugh I need a mental health day" moments from work. You know the kind - stay in bed all day, still wearing PJs at 3pm, dozing on & off. I was extremely tired & in no mood to cook or warm up a single thing. What I did want, was a giant helping of wonton soup. I've always walked by Shang's & looked at their site online. Everything does look delicious, I just never had the time to dine in or I'd forget about it when wanting to order delivery. Everyone offers wonton soup, & I've had many, although my favorites are found in Chinatown. I wanted to stay home. Ordered through Door Dash & really, that's it. Just the wonton soup. Food arrived quickly & I was surprised by the size. It seemed smaller initially than I thought it would be. Once I opened the bag up, I was amazed. The container was full of wontons, the broth was outstanding, & this was the warm hug of soup I was waiting for. The dumplings had thin skins (which I prefer) & the filling was tasty. The broth isn't like others & I can now say, this is a new favorite. Even better because Evanston's not far from me. If you're feeling under the weather, glum, or just love wonton soup, give Shang's a try. I'll definitely order again & might try their other fares but their wonton soup is the best I've had in a long time.

My friends brought me here because they couldn't stop raving over their Taiwanese Noodle Soup. They said it reminded them of their favorite noodles when they used to live in the Philippines so of course, I had to try this new place out! First, the location looks small on the outside but once you come in, the aesthetic of the inside looks modern and spacious. I noticed there seems to be many students and locals alike who frequent the establishment, and that said a lot to me. The server was very quick to seat us and take our orders. She was efficient and friendly throughout our whole meal. On my first visit, I definitely had to try the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup even if it's still hot outside. I'm a big broth person and let me tell you, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing and finished everything until the last drop. The braised beef was so tender and I love the soft but bouncy consistency of the house noodles. It was great because it didn't get all soggy even after being soaked in the broth. This is the type of dish I would keep reordering in whatever season. For my second visit, I ordered the Cha Jang Mein and wow, I was blown away. Again, the house noodles paired well with the Korean black bean sauce. The sauce was a mild, delicious mix of savory with a slight hint of sweetness. Also, the portions were generous but I was extra hungry, so I finished all of it! My friend's son got the Pong Pong Chicken and my gosh, that's the type of chicken where one minute you'd be nibbling on one and the next, all you'll see are bones on your plate. The skin was so crisp and the sauce was hot and tangy! I could eat a plate or two of this by myself! If you want a delicious and hearty Asian meal to share with friends and family, you need to visit Shang Noodles! Parking was super limited on the streets but the extra walk was so worth it! Just seeing regulars picking up their take out and people coming in and out were testaments as to what kind of food this place served. I'm so glad to find another gem I could keep coming back to in downtown Evanston!

Great Asian restaurant in downtown Evanston. Very large and unusual menu. While the they have the usual Chinese options the menu is full of things you don't see outside of Chinatown. Think pigs ears and lamb hotpot. To make it even better it's byob. Reservations for parties of 5 or more. We went at six and wait was minimal. Big portions very reasonably priced. We will return.

Classice evanston take the asian parents to spot. The owner is nice, and the place gives off a clean chinese restaurant vibe. Frequent asian group dinner place as well. Recommend getting the chicken drypot!

Back at one of my favorite spots in #Evanston . I don't know if I've found a better value and quality for entrees at lunch and dinner. This is one of the few Chinese restaurants outside of Chinatown that I actually go back over and over again. Lunch/ dinner special prices range from $15-18 with hearty portions. This one is the Twiced cook pork belly . The speed of service is especially appealing as it's hard to believe you can squeeze a quality sit down #Chinese meal in a normal workday lunch hour but they totally do it time and time again. Highly recommend that you also try to hot pot specials especially dry hot pot. The staff there are super friendly and it is great restaurant for individuals snd groups as you can easily carry on conversations as it's not loud at all.

FLAVOR! That is what we got with every mouthful. The thinly sliced Cumin Lamb was spectacular! The chef hit the right balance of flavors between salty, well-spiced but not overly spicy from the cumin and chili oil, a hint of bitterness from the still crisp green bell peppers, a hint of sweetness from the onions, a hint of tang from perhaps a vinegar. We paired it with pea pod tips sautéed in garlic. Again, perfection with tender-crisp greens and garlic brightly complementing the lamb. The texture of the noodles in the Taiwanese beef noodle soup was bouncy and chewy and everything that we want our noodles to be. The beef was tender and flavorful and the broth tasted on point. My daughter who we brought home the pig ears red chili oil for loved every bit of her dish. My mom loved the house stir-fry vegetables with fish fillet. Now you might be wondering why are we giving it only 4 stars with all the superlatives in this review. Well, hubby is a disciple of the belief that soup must be scalding hot. He is a little let-down that the soup - despite the warning from the lady who served us that it was hot - was not hot enough. It's all about the temperature and I would have given it another star if not for those pesky few degrees. Anyway, if you are okay with soup that is not very hot, you have my permission to add that one more star! The place is clean and the space well utilized with tables for parties of two and four filling the room aside from the booths lining the walls. It is well-lit and the sounds are absorbed within the confines so we'll that we can actually can carry on a conversation without having to increase our volume or strain to hear what the other is saying. Full disclosure: I may have made a lot of MMMMmmmmm and Wowowee noises in between bites. The young couple on the next table had to check out what we were having a copied a couple of the dishes we ordered. Hahaha The verdict is out and this place is guilty of cooking some of the most deliciously divine food this side of town. I sentence them to life serving more of these flavorful fares! Let me preface this by saying I'm a white girl with a bland palate. I typically eat Americanized Chinese food. I tried Shang Noodle last night for takeout and thought it was good, but not great. Service was solid for pickup. My order was packaged and ready to go when I arrived at the quoted time, but still hot when I got home. I was most excited to try their Mongolian Chicken, but for me it didn't have the flavor I was expecting. The sauce was bland and the chicken was pepper-y (black pepper, not spicy pepper). It tasted more like a typical "chicken in brown sauce" dish vs. Mongolian, but that could be the American in me. I was expecting something more onion-y and slightly sweet. My friend ordered Orange Chicken. He thought it was good, but not spicy without actually eating the chili peppers. Meanwhile, I tried it and really liked it, which means it was not spicy at all. But I'd order it for myself, minus the chili peppers. It was very sweet. The Chicken Chow Mein was solid. Chewy noodles. Same pepper chicken as the Mongolian Chicken, but tasted better in this context. I may order again with different items to see if I can find what works for me.

Lovely Chinese restaurant we hit up for lunch which we walked to from Northwestern. They had lots of vegetarian choices (or options that could be modified). Prompt service. The teas were lovely.

Whenever I'm craving for beef noodle soup, I always choose Shang Noodle. The noodle itself is thick and chewy. The soup is thick and fresh. Service is right to the point. The staff is very attentive. Environment is warm and cozy. It's a bit loud during weekends. But it's totally ok to me. What can compete with a warm beef noodle soup in a cold weather? I can't wait to come back again and try other noodles.

The Taiwanese beef noodle soup was very good. Beef tripe, beef tendon, plus pig ear was a strange combination. It tasted good but gave me stomachache afterwards. The wait for food was very long. Overall it was a good place. It would have been four stars if the wait was short and there was no stomachache.

So I didn't realize this until recently, because I hardly ever venture out to these parts, but downtown Evanston, particularly Davis St., has quite a bit of Asian restaurants! I imagine it can be tough to find one perfect for the evening, but on one blustery night the move was to go to Shang Noodle & Chinese. I saw online they had this delicious looking spicy beef noodle soup that I really wanted to sink my teeth in, and boy did it not disappoint! This ain't your average Chinese restaurant-- far from it! This can be described as a bit more upscale, but not too fancy for the average diner. Their menu is pretty varied, touching on some authentic Chinese/Taiwanese dishes along with the classic fast food Chinese staples as well (can't go wrong with some General Tso's Chicken!). That evening was built for some soup though, so after devouring some delicious pot sticker appetizers, I anticipated on receiving my piping hot bowl of beef noodle soup. The bowl was huge, people! You are definitely going to get your money's worth dining at Shang! Not only that, but the quality of the meat, the broth, and the noodles were to the nine, and honestly with a dish like that, I never wanted my meal to end. There was also a spiciness to the bowl as well, but it wasn't too overwhelming like a melt your tongue off scenario, no it had just the right amount of spice where it did not interfere with all of the flavors you get in your soup. I saw a few tables ordering the 'mini hot pots' which look like a personal serving of a traditional hot pot meal which I have never seen served at a restaurant before. Definitely would be something I'd order there during my next visit. I feel like Shang Noodle & Chinese would be a place I'd frequent if I lived closer in the area, just because they have such an array of dishes that looked so appealing that I'd just wanna try nearly everything and then some. Check this place out if you are in the area! If you're driving, there's a parking garage not too far away to leave your car if there's no street parking nearby. We went on a Sunday so luckily, parking at that garage was free of charge. Again, highly recommend Shang! Forget about your local go-to Chinese spot for one night, they'll understand.

We've been here a few times, never to dine in, but their takeout services are quick and efficient. If you want authentic Chinese food, this is the place to go, in the Evanston area. We've had a few different things here, and I've been pleasantly surprised by pretty much everything I've ordered, including: Spicy Jumbo Noodle Soup - veggies, meats, and noodles are perfectly cooked, tender, and soaks up all the flavor. Korean Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup - similar to the above in terms of taste profile and ingredients Fried Rice - I didn't try this, but my friend who is in love with fried rice, loves this dish and it's the best she's had recently in the north suburbs. Beef Noodle Soup - Good, not the best, but a solid choice if you're having cravings for this particular dish. They also have some great variety on their menu, and a lot of items that I've traditionally had but haven't had time to get around to ordering yet.

Shang is a conveniently-located Northwestern student favorite. I admittedly hold Taiwanese beef noodle soup to a high standard as it's one of my favorite comfort foods -- and I found their iteration underwhelming. However, for the most part, they do provide an affordable Chinese food fix with generous portions, so I understand the popularity; just wouldn't necessarily be my own go-to. Shang's is one of my go to restaurants in Evanston! I'm always so excited to come here! My go to, the Cha jiang mian, was so delicious, the perfect amount of sweet and savory. And the wonton soup was great too. I like the decorations in the restaurant as well.

Shang's is one of the few worth it restaurants in Evanston in my opinion. I come here for when I'm craving hot pot and other Chinese food ( dumplings, hunan beef, etc). The spice level is pretty mild bc it's illinois but it's solid. The staff are great, it's a clean and vibey place, and overall it's solid. Come when you're hungry for Chinese!

The food was Excellent, and the Menu was extremely diverse. Service was great, friendly and quick. The Ambiance was Excellent, the restaurant was filled with Northwestern students and faculty with their families, most of whom appeared to be of Chinese descent. Which probably explains why the menu is in Chinese and English. The place is spotless and as I said earlier, the food is excellent, with very reasonable prices. It was absolutely a positive experience, that we intend to repeat. Very informal and friendly.

Decent place in downtown Evanston. Street/metered parking that was surprisingly easy to find on a weekday afternoon. Came when it first opened so was seated promptly. Place is clean, nicely furnished. Staff was nice and professional. They checked in often and gave their recommendation. Between the 3 of us, we ordered an appetizer to share and 2 entrees to share. I love duck so opted for the cold duck appetizer. The sauce reminded me of soy sauce chicken. It wasn't bad, but I still prefer my duck warm/hot. We then had the Taiwan beef noodle and the fish and lamb casserole. Both we asked for mildly spicy just in case it was too spicy. The staff said that to cover the gaminess of the lamb, the spicier the better, but I didn't mind the slight gaminess from the casserole. I didn't think the noodle was all that great, pretty standard. Beef was tender though. I did like the casserole. Had left over of the casserole and went home and added more veggies to it and a noodle lol. Good place to try if you're in the area as the service was great, friendly.

I did not know where to go eat in downtown Evanston so I decided to try here since the reviews were great. This place did not disappoint. I was pleased with the serving size and also the quality of the food. The lady was also Chinese like us so she spoke in Chinese with our table. I found that a lot of the customers there were also Chinese. I guess this must be a great place to eat since I find a lot of our kind of people here. The lady was nice and also told us how their noodles are all homemade and their dishes are all authentic Chinese dishes. We tried the house Mandarin duck (cold appetizer), and Taiwanese beef noodle soup, and fish fillet & lamb casserole. Everything was delicious! The sauce for the Mandarin duck was flavorful. I kept dipping in the sauce to get all of them coated on the duck. We asked for the casserole to be slightly spicy only because my sister and mom doesn't like it too spicy. I prefer it to be a little more spicy. The lady even said that this dish has to be a little more spicy to get ris of the lamb smell that many do not like. I definitely recommend this place for those who want to try authentic Chinese food.

Y'all this place is soooooo good. And the portions are big enough so that you have leftovers. We went at a quiet time so the food and service was quick. The inside is so pretty and clean as well, it's the perfect place to take friends and family!!!

Chinese food in Evanston has always been meh until I ordered here. Now it's my go to. There are a few items that don't agree with my palate, but I've sorted them. I know what to order and the prices are decent.

After walking around Northwestern, we had a craving for some Chinese food. Shang Noodle and Chinese definitely hit the spot. The hunan chicken was really flavorful and the chicken was perfectly tender. Definitely ate more than I should've!

Do yourself a favor. Go to this place immediately. The crispy chicken sizzling pot is something I dream about on a weekly basis. It is the only thing I ever order. Deep fried chicken pieces, cauliflower, green beans, potatoes, and mouth numbing Sichuan chili served over an open flame at your table. That rice never stood a chance. You'll want to wash it down with something. Fortunately, they also have good drinks. I like the passion fruit or mango green tea. They have bubble tea and coffee drinks as well, and everything is made to order. The ambience is also lovely. It's clean and well-kept. Pretty quiet. I have definitely studied here before. Parking is on the street, closer to the restaurant it is metered. If you are willing to walk, you can snag free 2-hour parking if you venture east towards the lake.

Authentic Chinese food. Pork intestine with chili pot is definitely what I like. It requires very thoroughly clean so the intestine can remain its texture without any odor. Highly recommended

One of my favorite local spots to satisfy my Chinese food craving. The soups are so good and I love the Taiwanese beef noodle soup and the generous portion of wonton soup. My favorite hot pot is the fish and lamb, which has a nice kick to it. The house noodle chowmein is more like lomein.

Came here for the first time on a whim for a Saturday night dinner around 6 PM. Got lucky because it was not full and we were seated immediately and were also able to find street parking. The menu is pretty simple with some classic traditional dishes as well as some that they have a unique take on. It is not too large with too many items but has a lot of the comfort food classics with noodles dumplings and a lot of hot pot selections. The portions are generous considering the price as well as the location in downtown Evanston. The food is cooked super fresh and hot for you and there is no hunting of seafood in the seafood hot pot. There was also no hunting for beef in the Mongolian beef. So this makes it quite tasty and pleasurable. I will definitely be coming back. Service was incredibly nice and patient with us especially because it was our first time. I have to say this is the best Mongolian beef in town and I have tried almost all of them.

First time trying this place today for lunch, boss took me there. Lets just say I wasn't disappointed. The service was excellent, the employees were all very nice and welcoming. The food comes out super fast as well. I got the General Tso's Shrimp, which was awesome. The shrimps were so crispy and fresh. The flavor was awesome. Also tried the spicy fish which was amazing too. Will be going back for sure!

We got the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup, Walnut Shrimp, and Vegetable Delight. Here are the highlights: - The 2 non-noodle dishes each came with a bowl of rice. - The Vegetable Delight was a dish of simple stir-fried vegetables in a starch-thickened sauce, a good light option. - The Walnut Shrimp was thickly coated and tossed in a sweet, mayo-based sauce. The coating was crunchy and flavourful, while the shrimp inside was tender. I really liked the walnuts and wished there were more. - We were a little disappointed with the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup. The soup clearly wasn't braised for a long time and lacked depth of flavour and richness. The beef was rather tough. I think you have to go to a specialized Taiwanese beef noodle soup restaurant for the real deal.

I ordered a simple vegetarian chow mein and was sorely disappointed. The portions were tiny. I had expected twice as much food, especially considering the price of the dish. The vegetarian option of the chow mein is just without meat but no price reduction or substitutions. You would assume that a Chinese restaurant would be able to sub tofu. Most of the vegetables came straight out of a can and do not taste very fresh with the exception of the broccoli. The noodles lack any discernible flavor except for being drowned in oil and pepper. If I am paying $16 for a dish, I expect more than a small handful of noodles with canned vegetables drenched in oil.

This is the 2nd take out we ordered in a week. Very good, the house mandarin duck is the best! The mandarin beef and Mongolian beef is good too. This is probably a restaurant i want to visit when i come next time.

In a nutshell: PASS the dumplings! Scratch that, pass me EVERYTHING! ----- From the clutches of the howling wind, my family dove into the Shang Noodle & Chinese restaurant for lunch and shelter. There's a Chinese word 热闹 (re nao) which is kind of lost-in-translation, but roughly means "lively," and that's exactly the kind of vibe Shang evokes. Full of hearty customers when we walked in, the room bustled with good cheer and chatter and warmth. The waitresses there are genuinely excited for new customers when they come in, and I found it so sweet when they referred to the youngins by cute Chinese nicknames like "handsome boi" and "little beauty." But anyway. The 'dumps.' The steamed pork and cabbage dumplings. A classic dish you'll find on almost any traditional Chinese restaurant menu. The pressure was on. Let me just share with you my personal, *very* reliable dumpling test. You take one chopstick and try to skewer a dumpling right in the center, where the round ball of filling is. A good, sturdy dumpling should hold firm when poked. If it falls apart when you try to take a bite out of it... DUMP that dumpling! (Sorry, that's a bit extreme). But luckily, Shang's dumplings passed with flying colours. The dumplings looked like plump little sailboats with flappy wings (weird simile sorry) and the rich filling was enveloped by good, thick pastry skin. I honestly could rave about the dumps for ages. Do note that the dumplings are steamed fresh so they will take longer than most of the other dishes to arrive on the table, but they're totally worth it. I also ordered the hot taro milk tea, which came almost straight away in a nice mug, and when I took my first sip, the drink's light creaminess and faint sweetness made my taste buds sing. My dad, who is definitely not an avid sugar fan, pronounced the tea surprisingly good, so you also have his word. Any spice lovers should try some of the mini hot pots offered; my parents got the fish fillet and lamb casserole one, and it's just chef's kiss, all-round. I particularly liked the fish, which was all rich and tender. For those with low spice tolerance, the spiciness is more like an after-effect that slightly stings at your taste buds, but not enough to make you gulp down water or wipe away streaming tears from your eyes, so I think you can take the chance on the hot pots. The sauteed shredded potato dish (basically thin, translucent potato strips topped with carrots and herbs I should know the name of but I don't) can be a refreshing respite from any spicy dish. With slightly heavy white vinegar dressing, the potatoes can taste more sour if you take larger, consecutive bites, but I think that depends more on personal preference. So all in all, when the winter bites, don't have a fright, just go to Shang's and you'll be alright :)

I can walk here from home in about 7 leisurely minutes. I most often go for the hotpot, chicken or seafood, and love their dumplings or wanton soup. They're a step above the type Chinese that's too gloppy and brown. And the atmo is warm and relaxed. Service is polite and efficient

It's cold weather time in Chicago! So you know it's noodle soup szn! (It's actually noodle soup szn year round for me). One of my favorite noodle soups currently is Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup and I've been traveling all over the city to try all the renditions. I don't think I've tried them all but Shang's Noodle is currently my favorite version. I like that they use thinner noodles than some of the other spots I've been to, but by far what sets Shang's apart is the broth. Some of the other broths I've had are too oily, too salty, or too bland. Shang's has always hit the perfect balance of spice, savory, and richness in every bowl. The meat is always so tender and the noodles soak up every bit of the brothy goodness. Thankfully they have a few locations throughout the city, so a warm, hearty bowl is never too far away! I cannot recommend it enough!

Shang Noodle & Chinese is a solid restaurant to go to eat, especially with friends. It has a decent variety of appetizers, noodle dishes, rice dishes, and hot and cold drinks. Let me start off with their water. Our waiter told us that it came straight from the tap. But when you grab that glass of water, lift it up, and sip it, you don't taste just tap water - you taste clarity, purity, and unsulliedness (needed a thesaurus). My friend, Luke, and I were immediately impressed after a single sip and could not stop drinking, and our waiter would have to often come back with jugs and jugs of water to refill our empty cups. Their water is simply spectacular. I ordered the Classic Jjamppong Noodle Soup. They are generous with their servings, so you can definitely order a single dish and share it among your friends. But being the fat ass that I am, I ordered it all for myself. On the menu, the dish is listed as being spicy. However, the spiciness was not overpowering at all. The dish also contains seafood and vegetables. I usually don't enjoy seafood, but the seafood in this dish was not bad. The noodles had a nice texture and soaked the soup in well. I have an incredibly low spice tolerance, so I expected tears to begin flowing midway through eating the Classic Jjamppong Noodle Soup. I thought it would be a good idea to order a Thai Iced Milk Tea to cool down the spiciness of the Classic Jjamppong Noodle Soup. The Thai Iced Milk Tea was served in a very cute, aesthetic mug. It tasted pretty good, but the tapioca was a little mushy. It wasn't like your average tapioca from boba places, but maybe it's because I didn't touch it for a long time. Or maybe it's because that was real, authentic, good tapioca. IDK. My friends ordered the Pan-Fried Pot Stickers appetizer and Mr. Chao's Steamed Dumplings. I only tried the Pan-Fried Pot Stickers. They tasted great and the sauce that comes with them complements them well. My friends said the steamed dumplings were good, so I thereby conclude they are good. The customer service was impeccable. When one of the ladies working there took our order, she didn't write anything down. She simply used her incredible memory. Wow. I do have one major problem with Shang Noodle & Chinese. Someone please tell me why the front door has a push handle for when you are supposed to pull, and a pull handle on the other side when you are supposed to push. That is bogus. This is not right. This is not cool. When I stepped up to the front door, eager to push open that door because of the push handle right in front of me, the door did not budge. I pushed again. Nothing. I looked around and only knew to pull on the handle after seeing the words "Pull." I finally walked into the restaurant but did so shamefully. I was embarrassed. I was hurt. Overall, this place is pretty cool.

The rice was bad. Like how? I had the fish and that was solid. But i can't really go back to a place with bad white rice and bad fried rice. Dry, stale texture and no flavor.

Update: rude staff at the front. Did not acknowledge me as I stood there but did acknowledge a man who wasn't melanated. Will not return and is not recommended for us melaninated folks.

I came here because it was a cold winter day and some Taiwanese beef noodle soup sounded so delicious. I didn't have any expectations but I was pleasantly surprised at how flavorful the food is. I highly recommend the House Special Chow Mein if you're not into soup noodles. I dined in and it wasn't too busy. However, the phone was constantly ringing so I assume a lot of their business are pick-up/delivery orders.

We come here pretty regularly and get the hot sizzling pot of crispy chicken and another entree. The portions are always a great size and that hot pot is the best thing on the menu. The atmosphere is always good and every time I go in, there are always a couple tables of people. The service is always good and they filled our water a lot. The only thing is that the food does make us pretty thirsty.

I've been here several times and this is the best Chinese food (and a few other East Asian nationalities) that I have ever had. Incredibly inventive dishes, bold flavors, and lots of vegan options. The tofu and vegetable dry sizzling pot was off the charts excellent. Noodles here are made in house. Service is incredible. This is seriously good food and I think completely competes with the best food in Chicago.

This was a nice last dinner in Chicago before the flight home. Cumin Lamb was our waitress' suggestion and it was delicious!
