Shang Palace

"This elegant restaurant has been a reliable favourite for classic Cantonese food for over 35 years. Chandeliers and Sung-style paintings create an impressive backdrop for sophisticated cooking that has changed little over time. Signatures include sautéed sliced pigeon fillets with bamboo shoot, black fungus and asparagus, boasting tender meat and contrasting textures. To sample all the house specialities, opt for the chef's signature tasting menu." - Michelin Inspector

5 Best Day Trips from Hong Kong

"A traditional dark-wood entrance, flanked by hanging jade ornaments, belies the flashy interiors within Shang Palace. Embracing the traditional red-and-gold palette of old-school Cantonese restaurants, the spacious room greets guests with futuristic lanterns, rich red carpets, and an LED wall that simulates a fish tank. But design aside, Shang Palace is where you go for delicious roasted goose, Peking duck, char siu (barbecue pork with honey), deep-fried durian puffs, and radish rolls. Expect to see lots of families during weekend dim sum and suit-clad corporate types in town for conferences or meetings on all other occasions." - Kate Springer

New Year, New Puddings

"Two Michelin-starred destination Shang Palace has been in the forefront of novel New Year pudding creations. Its rose sugar and honey locust fruit pudding is the most tempting among the three new items made by executive Chinese chef Cheung Long Yin. Rose-flavored dishes are always a hit among ladies. This pudding should be no exception." - Michelin Guide Digital-Hong Kong Macau

Dropped by for lunch with 3 pax. Limited tummy space so can’t order much. Got the gentleman to recommend and go with his recommendations. It was so so good! Everything was just on point, truly a gem. In the end, we couldn’t finished our dishes In my humble opinion, its goose is easily 1 of the BEST in HK. Tender with crispy skin with a layer of fats in it! Will definitely be back when in Hong Kong! Services were impeccable, staffs are all friendly and approachable. Thank you for the wonderful dining experiences! Cheers

Nice atmosphere and service overall. The food was decent. But found a hair in one of the noodle dishes, which was unfortunate. The manager came to apologize and gave us a free dessert as compensation.

Shang Palace – A Timeless Cantonese Masterpiece (17 Years Michelin-Starred!) Dining at Shang Palace, the legendary Michelin-starred Cantonese restaurant at Kowloon Shangri-La, is like stepping into an opulent culinary temple where tradition meets perfection. Having held a Michelin star for 17 consecutive years (previously two stars!), this is not just a meal—it’s an imperial feast fit for royalty. 🏮 The Ambiance – Classic Chinese Grandeur The moment you enter, you’re greeted by ornate chandeliers, intricate wood carvings, and plush banquet-style seating—a regal yet warm setting that screams old-world Hong Kong luxury. The vibe is elegant, refined, and authentically Cantonese, with impeccable service to match. 🍽️ The Tasting Menu – A Symphony of Cantonese Excellence Every dish was a masterclass in texture, balance, and wok hei (breath of the wok). Here’s why this menu deserves its Michelin star: 🖤 Crispy Fish Maw with Black Vinegar Sauce A divine crunch followed by a tangy-sweet glaze—the fish maw was light yet luxurious, with the black vinegar adding a sophisticated depth. 🐍 Roasted Crispy Eel with Fried Ginger & Honey Sticky, caramelized, and impossibly crisp—the eel melted like savory candy, while the honey-glazed ginger gave it a zingy contrast. 🌊 Marinated Red Jellyfish in Scallion Oil & X.O. Sauce A textural marvel—bouncy, crunchy jellyfish soaked in aromatic scallion oil and the umami bomb of X.O. sauce. An addictive starter. 🍲 Shredded Chicken & Abalone Thick Soup Silky, rich, and packed with treasures—tender abalone slivers and velvety broth that tasted like liquid gold. 🦀 Deep-Fried Crab Claw Coated with Minced Shrimp A Cantonese classic done flawlessly—the golden, airy crust gave way to juicy crab meat, all wrapped in a bouncy shrimp mousse. 🥩 Wok-Fried Normandy Beef with Black Pepper & Aged Lily Bulbs The tender beef cubes were seared to smoky perfection, with 9-year-old lily bulbs adding a subtle floral sweetness. The black pepper kick was chef’s kiss. 🍚 Lobster Broth Seafood Rice with Crispy Rice A showstopper—the bisque-like lobster broth was poured tableside over plump seafood and crunchy rice, creating a party of textures. 🍋 Finger Lime Mango Pomelo Sago + Gold-Flecked Brown Sugar Cake The modern twist on mango pomelo sago (with bursty finger lime caviar) was refreshingly tart, while the gold-dusted brown sugar cake was sticky, fragrant, and decadent. 🌟 Why It’s Still a Michelin Star (Even After Downgrade to 1 Star) Yes, it used to have two stars, but make no mistake—this is still elite Cantonese cuisine. The downgrade might reflect Michelin’s shifting trends, but Shang Palace sticks to its guns: time-honored techniques, premium ingredients, and flawless execution. 💯 The Verdict – A Must for Cantonese Cuisine Connoisseurs If you want authentic, high-end Cantonese food in Hong Kong, Shang Palace remains unbeatable. The vibe is timeless, the service is polished, and the flavors? Pure magic. 5/5 stars – A culinary heirloom that deserves its place in history.

Step inside a palace and go back in time… truly a dinning experience!!! This Michelin star restaurant inside the legendary Shangri-La restaurant! The red & gold theme restaurant is filled with beautiful paintings and chandelier is art in itself!!! The cuisine is presented in a magnificent setting .. we came here and ate 2 different set menu so that we can sample the various flavor … expensive? Yes… but it will give you a memorable experience that will stay with you a lifetime…

I recently revisited this restaurant after many years, and I am delighted to report that the food quality remains exceptional. The service was amazing, attentive, and friendly, enhancing the overall dining experience. The highlight of my meal was the fried chicken, which was perfectly crispy and flavorful, just as I remembered. The dessert was equally impressive, a delightful way to end the meal. It's evident that this place has maintained its high standards over the years. It continues to be a gem, offering consistently excellent food and service.

Google
WILL COME BACK? YES Pros: - Great food as usual. - Staff are attentive and speedy during service. - Very good sommelier. - Decorated with the best cantonese decoration. The best place to bring a visitor. Cons: - Space is big and can get very empty during weekdays. Giving eery vibe. - Hard to find if you are not familiar with the hotel lay out.

On 28 July 2024, my elder son and daughter-in-law invited my wife and I to have lunch here. We were seated in its annex which was no different from an ordinary restaurant. I was surprised that a staff advised that a dish I ordered wasn’t good and had to order something else. As I had high expectations, the experience barely met them.

Google
The best dim sum experience and chassis ihave had in Asia or elsewhere. The service was impeccable. I found It affordable for the quality and care put in the food. They offer half portions so you can enjoy more dishes. It was excellent I would gladly return but ruined the pleasure of eating chashu and dim sum anywhere else.

Yelp
Came here again for lunch and it still impresses me every single time. The dim sum is always spot on, but it is the dishes which are outstanding. My favorites were the yellow cucumber soup we had, as well as steamed fish, and the beautiful conpoy fried rice. We also had bittermelon tea which was very interesting. Shang Palace's Cantonese food has been a family favorite for decades, and it is so nice to know that they have kept up the standards of high end Cantonese cuisine. It is extremely difficult to find Cantonese cuisine in the US done this way. This is what makes me miss living in HK. Always one of my favorites while in HK. Service is impeccable as well.

Yelp
This place indeed pissed me off by keeping our group waiting for almost an hour between dishes. It was ranked as a Michelin two star, yet to me, it deserved none before their team knows how to management clients' expectation and how to make sure people ordered first get the food first. Food-wise, it was at the ok level, yet I could find a million places in Hong Kong that serves similar Cantonese food. I would avoid this place if you prefer to have a better mood for the rest of your day. Do not come.

Yelp
I am in the same boat as other reviewers in that I had high expectations for a two Michelin star restaurant. If I had not known that they had two stars, I might have been better off, as this was a nice fine dining restaurant. However, I expected much more than nice. With that said, the service was what I would expect of a higher end restaurant. The food was good, although pricey. Presentation was elegant for most dishes. The wine and spirits list is limited. All in all, Shang Palace meets my expectations as a fine dining restaurant, but doesn't impress me. Not "worth a detour/traveling for," which is the two star definition. Maybe 1 star at best.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I were excited to experience authentic, yet upscale Chinese cuisine. She ordered the Traditional Tasting Menu, while I ordered the Vegetarian Tasting Menu. Several courses really impressed us, however, we felt as though for two Michelin stars, creativity was lacking in terms of the common ingredients; they felt like variations of dishes you would find in many Chinese establishments. That is not to say that we did not enjoy our meal, especially the veggie bird's nest dish. We recommend this restaurant to those who are willing to spend a few extra dollars to experience high-quality tastes and service in Hong Kong.

Yelp
Fancy. So fancy that if I were Shang Dynasty royalty, I would most definitely choose to dine at Shang Palace. What stands out most to me about Shang Palace is how it perfectly masters centuries-old Chinese culinary traditions with 21st-century technical finesse--all too often, classy Asian food is diluted into some fashion of fusion, but Shang Palace maintains authenticity and augments it to the haute level of fine dining. (Disclaimer: that's about the extent of my food critic wannabe writing abilities. Any elegant prose will probably begin to rapidly deteriorate. Actual fine dining classy people may want to stop reading here) (FYI Japanese is included only because it was on the online menu. I'm not cool enough to be a polyglot) We got the dim sum set lunch because it seemed like a good and relatively less expensive way to sample all the specialties. Note an emphasis on relatively because the price tag is still $368 per person for a lunch, but at this quality it is definitely worth it. Delicacies include: 0. Fresh fruit juice | Even though I often laugh at restaurants in Asia trying to appear classy by serving juice and other western items, the juice was actually good! I chose mango and it tasted quite fresh indeed. 0.5 Tea | There was a little cup of chrysanthemum tea (in addition to the standard pot of tea). Not sure if this is standard for multi-course Chinese meals, but it makes you feel fancy. 1. 心拼盤 / Dim sum combination / 点心盛り合わせ| Honestly there is only so far you can get with dim sum, and I'm sure the best regular dim sum places could be on par with Michelin star restaurants in a blind taste test (hence the existence of the renowned "cheapest Michelin star" 添好運 / Tim Ho Wan). The set lunch dim sum included 蝦餃 / shrimp dumplings and 菠蘿包 / pineapple bun which tasted pretty much like good dim sum, and there was another dumpling which was more unique because it had a combination of ingredients unlike any dim sum I've tasted before. Overall my favorite part of the dim sum was the presentation: the miniature steamer was too cute. 2. 明火滋潤靚湯 / Soup of the day / 本日の健康スープ | I'm usually not a huge fan of soups, but this was good: very soothing and you could tell a lot of work went into the broth. It actually had real flavors, instead of the usual flavored salt water soups. 3. 銀魚醬玉簪蝦球 / Wok-fried prawns with seasonal vegetable in whitebait sauce / 車海老と季節野菜のシラスソース醤強火炒め: On point with just the right amount of spiciness and light crisp from wok expertise (鑊氣) 4. 鮑汁靈芝菇自製豆腐 / Braised homemade bean curd with giant mushroom in abalone sauce / 白霊茸と自家豆腐のアワビソース煮込み| This was my favorite! I really like tofu, and they made this magical. I have no idea what the green sauce is, but I can only describe as being like Chinese pesto: delicious and savory. The abalone sauce gave it a flavor explosion. To wrap up the fine dining-esque bites, there was a delightful array of textures, including the crispy topping, stringy dried scallop, and homemade tofu so soft it could be featured in toilet paper commercials (disregard the last comment if HK doesn't have commercials about ultra soft toilet paper and baby skin) 5. 鮑魚荷葉飯 / Fried-rice with abalone wrapped and steamed in lotus leaf / 蓮の葉包み 鮑入りチャーハン | After trying the 糯米飯 / glutinous rice at 大家樂 a few times, the Shang Palace high-class version with abalone was surely a treat. In my opinion presentation could have been a bit more artsy and creative, but it was tasty. 6. 芒果布甸 / Chilled mango / マンゴープリン | The set-up is extremely photogenic in a double glass container including ice, though I'm not sure how practical it is because the ice doesn't actually touch the pudding. (Dry ice would make more sense and would add an exponential wow factor) The pudding itself was good, with sufficient mango flavor and not too sweet. The ambiance is majestic: tall ceilings, a crimson theme, gold embellishments, traditional Chinese decor, chandeliers, lanterns, lantern-chandeliers--could easily make its way into an Ang Lee movie set.

Yelp
Regular nice Chinese food, but not a fancy restaurant. Like other reviews said, service is below Michelin level. Try another one if you expect a fancy dining experience. Plus it's not worth going a second time.

Yelp
The boyfriend and I had been looking forward to our dinner at Shang Palace for weeks but unfortunately our experience fell short of our high expectations. Our trip to Hong Kong landed on New Years Eve so we wanted to have a fancy dinner that evening. Based on the good reviews and it being a Michelin starred restaurant we thought Shang Palace would be a winner. The food was pretty good, but for the price you're paying to eat at a Michelin starred restaurant, pretty good just doesn't cut it. The real kicker though, and the reason for this two star review, was the service. Upon arrival the hostess sat us at a table right next to a banquet room where a large and rather loud group was having dinner. There was a constant parade of guests and servers in and out. To say this made our dining experience uncomfortable was an understatement. About ten minutes into this circus I asked the hostess to seat us somewhere else. She was happy to do it, but with other tables available why would they seat us there to begin with? After that, the rest of the service was inconsistent and extremely slow. Several times I had to track down our waiter to ask for another drink which is unacceptable for a restaurant with two Michelin stars. I realize that sounds a little pretentious, but I mean c'mon?! I will say though that the manager stopped by to chat with us for a few minutes as we were finishing our entree. He explained the history of cantonese dining etiquette which was interesting and a nice touch, but just didn't make up for the bad service overall.

Yelp
We had lunch here on a Saturday. The food is good but not like crazily great. I feel is more a gimmick than truly good taste although is a Michelin restaurant. I do love the ambiance. The decoration is classy, very CHINESE style art work. Service is great, no rush and no overwhelming. We get served when we need it instead of the server breathing on our neck. I recommend.

Yelp
This supposed ' 2 star. Michelin' restaurant is a complete disgrace. I have had better Chinese take out than this. Although the ambience is quite elegant, the service is mediocre and the food hideous. My wife and I had high expectations given the rigorous Michelin standards in France. This establishment doesn't even come me close to Michelin's provisional lowest rating of Bib Gourmand. First clue was that the two vintages of wine under $55 US were out of stock. Everything else was over $70, with a bottle of St Estephe listed at over $2400. (As if it really existed in the wine inventory). Appetizer of mushrooms was ok but nothing special. The main course, a pigeon had the most unimaginative sickly sweet sauce. My wife's noodle dish was tasteless and salty. Avoid at all cost. This is just an expensive tourist ripoff.

Yelp
My wife and I decided to indulge ourselves at this expensive ($450 US for dinner and two glasses of their least expensive wine) and supposedly outstanding Michelin recommended restaurant in the Kowloon Shangra-La Hotel. What a disappointing experience! The food was beautifully presented but in small portions and, except for the fried lobster and oatmeal, was mediocre at best. Definitely not worth even a quarter of the price. We really felt taken advantage of and would not suggest anyone waste their money. Instead, try the Tapas Bar on the ground floor, a much better value at a more reasonable price.

Serina W.

Yelp
The expectation for Shang Palace was set very high based on its Michelin star rating and reviews. I would say the food is good but not special enough to justify its hype. Matched with the price, it is in fact disappointing. We got the chef's special signature tasting menu which included crispy pork skin (the best part of the meal), fried lobster with oatmeal, whiskey braised short rib, soy marinated cod on a bed of rice and about 4 other courses but it was honestly not that memorable. The three named above were the best courses but with a price of $2900 HK dollars for two people (one drink each person) we felt a little ripped off. The desert was a variety of pastries which were quite dry and tasteless. Each of our courses came out lukewarm/cool rather than hot. Comparing it to other fine dining experiences with similar or even lesser price points, it was not worth the splurge in my opinion. Service was very attentive but they would only give one menu for two and that would be to the male at the table. When speaking, they would only address the male even when I (female) asked them a few questions - very mysogynistic style of serving but not sure if that is just the culture. With the abundance of choices available and fine dining options in HK, i would never choose to come back to Shang Palace.

Yelp
Michelin 2 rating is well deserved. One of the best Cantonese restaurants that I have ever enjoyed. Tried a variety of menu items ...all well prepared, delicately cooked, served with great attention to detail.

Yelp
Food is delicious, especially the baked crab meat stuffed in shell and the barbecued pork. Also yhe service is excellent, really enjoy the dinner in this Michelin 2 stars restaurant.

Grace T.

Yelp
This is rather expensive place but it has 2 Michelin stars people and it's worth it. I had a sweet fried lobster chefs recommendations, wagu Japanese beef half sized, and some kind of fish also chefs recommendations. the sauce here is amazing y'all. All of it is top noticed and totally taste different and amazing even though they cook some food I ate before. The food is totally fresh and brings out the best of each ingredient even the potato veggie dish here is amazing my friend scarfing fit down more than the fried rice which of course by itself was the best friend rice ever. if u want to have the best Chinese food come here people.

Joel K.

Yelp
My wife and I were guests of this very nice hotel. However, Shang palace, supposedly 2 Michelin star, was just terrible. The service was almost non existent. Most dishes, including my beef, were literally served cold. No one ever bothered to even ask how we were doing or if everything was okay. We had to literally had to get up from the table to get attention to get the check. THAT was promptly hustled over to us but could not leave until they received approval of us from the front desk. Every course was mediocre at best. One course, my desert of tapioca pudding with warm almond paste in the middle, was good. Otherwise, a fast food meal would have sufficed. There is no doubt the kitchen and wait staff did not give a hoot about their guests but when it came to the check, wow, that got their attention. Very sad and disappointing.
