SF’s Best Neighborhood Restaurants, According to Food Industry Insiders - Eater SF

"Once shelter in place hit, I probably stayed within a five-mile radius of my home in Richmond like 95 percent of the time. That meant lots of dumplings and scallion pancakes from New Dumpling, tofu stews and popcorn chicken from Gangnam Tofu, and whatever new thing (chirashi bowls, black curry, fruit sandos, etc., etc.) B-Dama’s Chikara Ono was selling out of the Berkeley Bowl West Cafe." - Eater Staff

It was first time I tried. I ordered porkchop noodle soup, when I saw the color of the soup i thought it would be very salty, but with my surprise it was a taste I been looking for. It was the perfect flavor, bring me back to my childhood, the noodle was also very good. The only thing that made me give 4 stars and not 5 stars is that the pork chop even though fried, the meat itself was overcooked dry, not juicy, and if they could add a stalk of bockchoy, then it will be the 5 star meal in my mind. Oh, they don't give you tea, you need to go to the side and get the water by yourself. Not sure if they have tea or not. Overall good experience

We went here because it was recommended on a food blogger’s Instagram account, and I also saw it had a 4+ star rating on Google when I looked it up. However, we didn’t find it lived up to the hype. We were seated next to a TV that was showing Kung Fu Panda and the volume was really loud. One of the seats at our table was quite dirty. We got two meal combos, both of which came with their signature king dumplings. The dumplings were decent, but the soup dishes that came with were only so-so. The plastic cups at the self-service free water station were dirty and the cups themselves smelled like bleach. All in all, the food was only okay, and nothing spectacular considering the price. It was a bit of a disappointment.

The restaurant only takes debit or cash. Food taste, food presentation, and overall atmosphere is good. We ordered various dishes to share. There are combos where you can get two dishes and either a tea egg or cold soy milk. Cold soy milk was very tasty. Dishes were brought out in a timely manner and everything was tasty. We especially liked the pan fried dumplings. Dumpling fillings were very full and meaty! You can also add Shanghai Worcestershire sauce or vinegar to your dish for extra flavour. You would have to get your own beverages (water or tea). Lots of parking spaces as this restaurant is located in a plaza next to Pizza Hut and near Save On Foods.

Okay y’all, life is all about: happiness = reality - expectations. Don’t expect too much in terms of cleanliness and service, that’s not the authentic Chinese experience. Think of it more as a hole-in-the-wall than a fancy restaurant. It’s clean enough and service is good enough. Most importantly, the food is good enough. It’s actually very flavourful and tasty. It can err on the heavier side and it’s a bit oily for my taste, but I can see others really loving it for the same reason. I would still recommend giving it a try if you’re in the area, and I would probably come back for the wontons and pork chop. They are quite busy and popular, and the people running it are working hard. Just don’t expect too much and you’ll be pleasantly satisfied ☺️

Google
Great little restaurant serving Shanghai food. Self serv tea and water, food was excellent and service was good. Placement of the tables were a little tight.

I am so happy to find this restaurant. While the restaurant is a bit small, the food was super authentic (I can attest as someone who lived in Shanghai for a couple of years), service was awesome & super fast. Highly recommend for anyone curious about Shanghainese cuisine or longing for these dishes if you had them before.

Google
I got the curry beef soup and dumpling combo for lunch. The food was very yummy, and the dumplings were especially good. Other reviews point out complaints about the self serve water cups being a little dirty, but it did not really bother me. Food came quickly, tasted good, and the staff was friendly. What more could you ask for.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon, we were seated promptly after a 5-10 minute wait. Very friendly staff and food was amazing. Highly recommend to try their Dumpling King - 6 pieces of pan-fried Shanghainese dumpling, very flavourful and oozing with hot soup when bitten into. The dry noodle with braised pork chop was also phenomenal - the meat was super tender and sweet. They also have some chili oil and vinegar on the side which goes very well with the food. One critique is that quite a few bowls/dipping sauce plate were not cleaned properly when they were brought to us. There were stains on the bowls but the staff replaced them promptly for us. Overall, this place is a bustling small restaurant that serves traditional and well-made Shanghainese food, definitely recommend trying out.

Yelp
This is a small cozy restaurant that serves delicious soup dumpling, wontons, pork chops, noodles & more. Food averages between $10-$20 so it's pretty affordable! Great place for some Shanghai comfort food and portions are decent. We tried the following: - Dumpling King $10.50 for 6 - Sesame Peanut Sauce w/ dry noodles $15.50 -Braised Pork Chop w/ Scallion oil noodles $20.99 - Red braised pork belly $17.99 - Deep fried pork chops $12.99 - Secret stuffing wontons $13.99 for 8 - Tiger prawn wontons $7.99 for 12 - Tea eggs $2 each - Soy milk $3.99 The dumpling king soup dumplings are a must get! They come super juicy & hot. I enjoyed the sesame peanut noodles & wontons as well. The braised pork chop was massive & was good value. It can be a little dry. The meal was filling. I would come back! The tea was self serve.

Yelp
This small but cozy restaurant is located in Richmond. All of their employees and the majority of their customers are from Shanghai. We tried their dumplings and noodle soup with fried pork chop. After ordering, the food came out in about 10 minutes. Service is mediocre and so is the food. The noodles do not taste like they have any texture to them, and the meat was soaked in the soup base, diluting its flavor. However, as a Shanghainese, I do like their addition of sugar in the soy sauce marinade of the pork chops.

Yelp
I don't see why their rating is bad, I personally love getting frozen dumpling and wontons to go from there, both sooo delicious and soooo worth it. 15/10. Dine in is ok, they r sooo busy all the time, not a fan of waiting in line for me.

Yelp
Tasty Shanghai style place inside the Terra Nova Village strip mall. Parking is plentiful in the strip mall lot. The place is modern but plain. White everything with some pale wood panelling. Staff were friendly and helpful. Signature dumplings - nice and juicy. Served in batches of 6. Curry beef vermicelli soup - not as thick as I was expecting, but very tasty nonetheless. Lots of cilantro and green onion. Pork chop brased in soy sauce and dry noodle with deep fried scallion oil - pork chop was nice and moist and not too salty. Dry noodles were tasty too. Spicy ground pork - a bit oily, but this is expected. Pickled vegetable and shredded pork - not too sour. Tasty. Overall the food is quite solid. Wouldn't mind coming back. Recommended.

Yelp
This is a small Shanghai restaurant located in a strip mall by Terra Nova, Richmond. Got an invite from a friend who frequents this place. Ambiance has a modern and clean feel, bright lights with white walls and white tables and chairs. Tea or water are self serve. As the name implies, they mainly serve dumplings. We ordered their Dumpling King 上海大王鍋貼. We were warned to be careful as it has hot soup inside. And indeed it has! The skin of the dumpling is quite thick and texture feels like Chinese bun bread in my opinion. We also ordered their Braised Pork Belly and Pork Chop on Noodle. The chef had these dishes to a T - very tasty, meat tender. Love it They close at 8 so be sure to catch them early.

Yelp
New Shanghai Dumpling store opened in Terra Nova Richmond. We went on Christmas day and they are still doing soft opening and training staffs. We odered the signature item - dry noodle mixed with deep fried scallion oil and the braised pork chop. ($20) This dish was well made and very tasty. The noodle cooked al dente with nice texture and the scallion oil brings out the flavor and seasoning. Surprisingly, the pork chop was quite thick. I like the sauce that they used to braise the pork chop as well. It's sweet and savory which makes me keep want to come back for it. Second combo we ordered was the Combo B ($19.50) which included the pan fried dumplings, braised tea egg, and small wonton soup. The pan fried dumplings were very crispy on the bottom of the wrapper and still remain a lot of juice inside. Be careful when you eat it so you don't get burned. Tea egg and the wontons were quite moderate; I won't say they are the must-get-it items. Overall, I like the food we ordered on the day we visited; however, I do think the dishes are on the pricier side compared to other similar restaurants.

Yelp
Walked in to the restaurant, was seated at a table very small that I had to sit sideways so I could fit. Kinda uncomfortable to eat and with my body facing the door and my face facing the other party. We ordered the Combo A - JvLu Combo ($18.50) and the Combo B - FuMin Combo ($19.50). Water and Tea is self-served by the door. Combo A included: -6 pc dumplings -Curry Beef Vermicelli Soup -Choice of: 1 tea egg or soy milk Combo B included: -6 pc dumplings -12 pcs tiger prawn small wonton -Choice of: 1 tea egg or soy milk Dumplings: Pro - had soup inside Cons - meat was very loose, looser than a shanghai soup dumpling skin was very thick was pan-fried in so much oil that it wasn't crispy, but soggy from the excessive oil used Do note that there is black vinegar on the table. It's in the tea pot that the server neglected to tell us. Curry Beef Vermicelli Soup: Pro - Nothing was good about this Cons - soup was very watered/lack of flavor. The soup was yellow and oily, but where was the flavor?I kept looking at all the tables for some salt. MSG wouldn't hurt either. Contained 3 pieces of thin sliced beef. Not sure what's going on, but why was the beef green-colored? Ate it because I don't appreciate wasting meat. Vermicelli was very choppy and not a consistent length. Pieces of the vermicelli were ranging from .25 inches to 2 inches, which makes it very annoying to try to enjoy. Needless to say, I just ate the green beef and then did not want to finish the rest. Tea egg: Pro - I did not eat it because the egg was very black and looked dry. Soy milk: Pro - Tasted like it was purchased from the store. I swear I have a gallon of it that I purchased from Costco. Tiger Prawn Small Wonton: Pro - only tasted good with the chili oil that was provided on the table Con - Soup was the same as the curry (lack flavor, only thing that was sorta helpful was the little bits of wakame and dried tofu) We tried to finish all the meat products so we aren't wasting food, but the soup we couldn't finish. We paid and as we were on our way out, the whole restaurant staff, including the cooks inside (Yes, the cooks, I'm not kidding) rushed out to tell us to wait and come back. They called us back to say that we didn't tip. The server saw that we didn't finish our food, but found it acceptable to ask us to still tip for the horrible food. We came back and tipped. The whole restaurant was basically self-serve but the workers are very entitled. Overall, the other positive reviews I feel are very biased and may be friends of the owner. I am Shanghainese and I wouldn't say this food is Shanghainese. It is just food slapped together by people that don't know how to cook. I do know how to cook Shanghainese cuisine so I would be more than willing to go into the kitchen and show people how to cook properly when you are charging $20+ for food. Food wait time was very long (30 mins). Otherwise, please stop calling yourselves a Shanghainese restaurant. It's very, very, VERY EMBARRASSING for this restaurant to sully our Shanghainese reputation.

Yelp
Ordered Combo A with Egg. The Curry Vermicelli with beef was tasteless and very minimal noodles. Only had 1 slice of beef! The dumplings were so,so. Lots of juices inside which made it tasty. I probably won't be ordering here again unless it's convenient.
