Yelp
Walked in to the restaurant, was seated at a table very small that I had to sit sideways so I could fit. Kinda uncomfortable to eat and with my body facing the door and my face facing the other party.
We ordered the Combo A - JvLu Combo ($18.50) and the Combo B - FuMin Combo ($19.50). Water and Tea is self-served by the door.
Combo A included:
-6 pc dumplings
-Curry Beef Vermicelli Soup
-Choice of: 1 tea egg or soy milk
Combo B included:
-6 pc dumplings
-12 pcs tiger prawn small wonton
-Choice of: 1 tea egg or soy milk
Dumplings:
Pro - had soup inside
Cons - meat was very loose, looser than a shanghai soup dumpling
skin was very thick
was pan-fried in so much oil that it wasn't crispy, but soggy from the excessive oil used
Do note that there is black vinegar on the table. It's in the tea pot that the server neglected to tell us.
Curry Beef Vermicelli Soup:
Pro - Nothing was good about this
Cons - soup was very watered/lack of flavor. The soup was yellow and oily, but where was the flavor?I kept looking at all the tables for some salt. MSG wouldn't hurt either.
Contained 3 pieces of thin sliced beef. Not sure what's going on, but why was the beef green-colored? Ate it because I don't appreciate wasting meat.
Vermicelli was very choppy and not a consistent length. Pieces of the vermicelli were ranging from .25 inches to 2 inches, which makes it very annoying to try to enjoy.
Needless to say, I just ate the green beef and then did not want to finish the rest.
Tea egg:
Pro - I did not eat it because the egg was very black and looked dry.
Soy milk:
Pro - Tasted like it was purchased from the store. I swear I have a gallon of it that I purchased from Costco.
Tiger Prawn Small Wonton:
Pro - only tasted good with the chili oil that was provided on the table
Con - Soup was the same as the curry (lack flavor, only thing that was sorta helpful was the little bits of wakame and dried tofu)
We tried to finish all the meat products so we aren't wasting food, but the soup we couldn't finish. We paid and as we were on our way out, the whole restaurant staff, including the cooks inside (Yes, the cooks, I'm not kidding) rushed out to tell us to wait and come back. They called us back to say that we didn't tip. The server saw that we didn't finish our food, but found it acceptable to ask us to still tip for the horrible food. We came back and tipped. The whole restaurant was basically self-serve but the workers are very entitled.
Overall, the other positive reviews I feel are very biased and may be friends of the owner. I am Shanghainese and I wouldn't say this food is Shanghainese. It is just food slapped together by people that don't know how to cook. I do know how to cook Shanghainese cuisine so I would be more than willing to go into the kitchen and show people how to cook properly when you are charging $20+ for food. Food wait time was very long (30 mins).
Otherwise, please stop calling yourselves a Shanghainese restaurant. It's very, very, VERY EMBARRASSING for this restaurant to sully our Shanghainese reputation.
