Restaurant Closures in Seattle for April, 2025 | Eater Seattle

"A longstanding Chinatown International District staple will close at the end of May; co-owner Christine Su told the Seattle Times that the reasons are multifaceted: the retirement of a longtime chef, rising food and labor costs, and worries among potential customers (not based in reality) that the area was unsafe. Su’s parents opened the restaurant in 1990." - Harry Cheadle

Google
This place has the best eggrolls in town. They know bigger is better they don't cheat me like other places do. The rice is soft and chewy and full of flavor. The boneless spare ribs are very chewy and juicy. The lo mein, is perfect. I liked all of my food and would absolutely recommend.

Google
I order take out and have always enjoyed the food. Really fresh and always tasty. Love the beef and cashews, special house fried rice and the not too spicy chicken. Oh and the egg rolls!

Google
I ordered chicken and broccoli, shrimp and broccoli, and teriyaki chicken.. and steamed veggies. I could only salvage the steamed veggies. All the food was drenched in oil.. so much oil.. I had to throw it all out.

Google
My food was good, got the sesame chicken combo, thier rice is different than what I’m used too. The chicken is kinda weird but good not sure how to explain it. If it was the only place around I’d eat it again. But not my fav

I had a pick up order and I went to pick it up and saw through the windows the back room with trays of food just out in this room full of trash…

Google
I came for beef broccoli with white rice and fried chicken wings, and I got exactly what I was looking for from a American Chinese takeout restaurant. It fulfilled the exact gold standard that I expect for beef broccoli, and for chicken wings 👌🏻 Perk: nearby Riverside Park with nice river views!

Google
I order her all the time. I like how they know My order. Food is always fresh. I dislike delivery driver expecting a tip. It’s rude. Sometimes this is ppls last to feed their family.

Google
Food was acceptable and hot but general Taos was too sweet and breading was grainy. Rice tasted bland and burnt. Crab ragoons were bland. Boneless ribs were sweet but tolerable. Not worth the money to me. Won’t order from here again. Sorry wish you were better

Yelp
Beef and broccoli was tender and flavorful. The steam rice was cooked perfectly and the service was lovely. I recommend this went over here in New London.

Yelp
unfortunately our regular restaurant was closed so we tried some place new. the food was awful! everything was greasy and oily. the dumplings were deep fried and the filling tasted terrible. the moo shu pork used greasy spare ribs and the extremely salty sauce was so oily. the sauce was so sweet who needs the plum sauce! pancakes were rice wrappers, not pancakes so too thin to fold and hold the filling inside. the beef with snow peas had too much black pepper that your lips stung. meat was fatty and barely cooked, inedible! thank goodness they forgot one of our dishes so i didnt have to pay for something just to throw it away. can't understand how this place has been in business for years. it was truly one of the most disgusting meals I've ever tried to eat!

Yelp
We take out. Always good. Staff exceptional and they welcome you back! That means a lot. This is our go-to Chinese place even though we don't live in New London. Try them!

Yelp
Wonton soup is one of my go to comfort foods and Shanghai gardens wonton soup hit the SPOT! The wontons were tender and the broth was subtle yet flavorful. I haven't had great luck with Chinese food in the greater New London area, but next time I'm in the mood I'll remember Shanghai Gardens got it down!

Yelp
Ordered food here on 1/1/23. The soup was tasteless, the vegetarian tofu dish tasted old, and the teriyaki sticks, the best thing we ordered - were still not very good. Disappointing and won't order here again.

Yelp
Prompt delivery ! I have never been disappointed with the food. Love the chicken fingers!!!! Yum! Thank you

Yelp
This is my GO TO Chinese restaurant in the area. I have tried 6-7 other places & this is by far the best. They used quality fresh ingredients & everything he made to order. It's AMERICAN Chinese food but solidly good!

Yelp
I've had food from here three times. It was as good as I'd expect. Tonight, they waited 6 minutes after they closed for me to pick up my order. Very nice.

Yelp
Love this spot. For great casual/Americanized Chinese food in NL, this place can't be beat. The teriyaki beef sticks are the best I've ever had, anywhere. Solid spot.

Yelp
Having had take-out from here five or six times, the best I can say is the people are nice and the food is both well-packaged and plentiful. Unfortunately, it has little resemblance to good American-Chinese food. I ordered an Orange Chicken combination plate with an egg roll I've not yet eaten and substituted lo mein (wok-sautéed wheat noodles) for white or fried rice for a $2 up-charge. I also ordered vegetable egg foo yung (spelled variously, these are Chinese egg omelets). Sadly, Shanghai Garden is making food that is pretty bland and worse, displays no artistry. The Orange Chicken dish was strip mall average, but at least that the dark meat pieces were not terribly over-breaded . Many restaurants serve this dish with a couple pieces of broccoli but here it's been stripped out, if it was ever even offered. Similarly, the lo mein had no trace of scallion, cabbage or carrot and no 'sear' in the wok to give it a little smokiness; Just boring, slippery, depressing carbohydrates. The biggest crime is the "gravy" they serve on the side of the egg foo yung. It's pale and slightly sour, completely missing the mark of a flavorful brown sauce. It truly makes me sad that this nearby restaurant's food is so-so. Maybe some day I'll try again but in the meantime I'll drive just five minutes more to Quaker Hill from my home in Hodges Square for Chinese food that always pleases.

Yelp
This is my go-to Chinese food restaurant when I am at work because it is right around the corner! The food is always made quickly, and is good, but not the most flavorful that I've had. My new favorite item to order is the House Soup for 2 (but let's be honest, I'm the only one eating it haha). It has wonton, shrimp, pork, veggies and is in a clear broth. It is very filling for lunch and is great for a cold day!

Yelp
Love, love, love this place! Greats dumplings! Usually get dinner but, they also have great lunch portions for a low price. Highly recommend

Yelp
When I come down this way to visit my parents once a week, they ask me to pick up food from here often. I have been a fan of their sesame tofu since I first tried their food at a friends place when we got snowed in and it was the only place that was open still. Their teriyaki chicken is always delish, as is their vegetable rice. Their prices are very reasonable and the best part is if you order for 35$ worth you get a free general tso's chicken meal. The lady is super nice every time my mom and I go in. If you like spice you can ask for their red chili oil as a side and it is delish! I don't get how anyone could not like these sweet ppl and their great food!

Yelp
My go to take out spot! They once threatened to keep my food till the next day so I could pick it up and pay for it lol!! More Vegan options please!!

Angel J.

Yelp
I first want to say I made an account just to let people know that this is NOT the place you want to spend your hard earned money on. I've ordered from here in the past and encountered minor issues like being charged wrong or hair found in the food. After Today I'll NEVER give this establishment another dime! A CHUNK OF METAL WAS IN MY EGG ROLL & MY TOOTH IS DAMAGED BECAUSE OF IT! Again, I could look over the hair and incorrect charges but this is completely unexceptionable! DO NOT EAT HERE!! If I could find out how to post a photo of the metal on here I will.

Yelp
I went to this place since the unapproved reviews seemed to think highly. I went in and did not receive any acknowledgement of my presence, so I sat myself and looked at the menu. I ordered wonton soup, mini pupu platter A (which comes with crab rangoons, spring rolls, chicken wings and boneless pork) and a pork lo mein. At no point was I offered or given water or tea, which is a little odd in my book for an American restaurant. The soup came out and was weak with little flavor. The lo mein came out before the platter, though the platter is the appetizer. I didn't mind since I was hungry when I went here, so food was food, but it does speak to their organizational skills in running the kitchen. The lo mein was good, probably 3.5/5, and definitely the best part of the meal. When the pupu came out I knew I was in for a let down: The rangoons were thick shelled, and the filling was mostly cream cheese with little flavoring otherwise; the spring rolls were bland and greasy; the wings were decent, worth eating if you wanted to get an order of them; the boneless pork, while cooked well, was coated with a thick, syrupy sauce which overrode the pork itself. All this was served with a fluorescent sweet and sour sauce, no duck sauce for this fine establishment. There are better places around, with actual parking lots, a staff that attends to your visit, and food you can enjoy. Unless you live within sight of this place, go elsewhere.

Yelp
I ordered items through Grubhub for this restaurant yesterday, and after two hours, the restaurant marked it delivered on the app (they never delivered it, and they use their own delivery people, not a 3rd party) and would not pick up any calls from myself or from GrubHub. They did, however, charge my credit card - customers beware.

Yelp
I been coming here for over 10 years. When I lived around the corner it was the spot to go to, and even now that I don't live as near as I used to it's the place I go to when I want some Chinese food. The price is reasonable, and the food has stayed as good as it was when I first started coming. For a while I was hooked on their egg rolls. Couldn't pass by here without grabbing one The lady here is always friendly, I recommend it to anyone who is in the area.

Yelp
Food was here quickly, hot, and actually pretty good. As for the delivery man I am NOT happy. He basically made a scene and disrupted my neighbors. It is raining and instead of following my directions to come to my back door, he sat in his car honking the horn obnoxiously. Mind you it is almost 9pm here on a school night! I didn't appreciate it neither did my neighbors. I shouldn't have given him a tip for staying in his car and me having to go outside.

Yelp
I really like this place, even having never stepped foot in it. Every time I get delivery from them, it comes ahead of schedule and piping hot. One time I got screwed by an incompetent Doordash driver and called up feeling a bit upset. The woman on the phone was professional throughout, dealing with my entitled hangry spiel with grace and understanding. Definitely my first choice for Chinese takeout in the area.

Yelp
Picked up a pint of chicken noodle soup five minutes after I telephone. They had my soup ready and the price was extremely reasonable. The service was great and with a smile.

Yelp
It took more than an hour for my food to get hear and there was little delivery people and the food had to much sauce on the right hand corner but beside the service and the sauce the food was excellent

Yelp
This is my favorite spot in the area. Great service and very fast. And obviously very decent food.

Yelp
First I have to say that several people recommended this place as a great place to get Chinese food in this area. (I asked folks as I am new to the area. I ordered beef with broccoli and requested some pea pods as well. Ordered crab Rangoon for an appetizer, wonton soup for me and hot and sour soup for him. He said the hot and sour was nothing he wanted to eat again, kind of greasy. Wonton soup lacked flavor and the wontons were almost aldente, hard on the seams and the filling was not tasty or attractive. The Crab Rangoon was an utter FAIL..... they are to be wrapped in wonton wrappers. These were wrapped in Egg roll wrappers, THICK & quite nasty. Filling had to much onion. When I asked if they had homemade duck sauce she told me no over and over until I told her how the Rangoon was made wrong and I was disappointed she went into the back and found some homemade duck sauce. ON A POSITIVE NOTE.....The Beef and Brocolli with the added pea pods was delicious. Meat was tender, vegetables were cooked perfectly, could have used some more brown sauce (rice sucked it up) but I did not request any. Still looking for a good place in Waterford, New London area.

Yelp
A week ago I stopped in for their Lunch Special (#14 LoMein w/shrimp). I was on my way to work and was going to eat it there. When I finally did eat it the top 1/2 of the container was what I ordered (LoMein w/shrimp), the !bottom 1/2 was FRIED RICE W/SHRIMP?! That's not what I paid for. If I wanted rice, I would have ordered rice. My husband and my son don't like Shanghai. I will never spend money at their restaurant again.

Yelp
I ordered delivery of Beef Curry and Hot and Spicy Beef. The food here is inexpensive but there's a reason for it. It's chock full of celery and onions, you have to dig to find the meat. The Hot and Spicy Beef was probably 90% onions and celery and a few other veggies and it was the same with the curry. Tons of carrots, onions, celery, etc. Very disappointed. The absolute best Chinese food for takeout and delivery is in East Lyme and King Garden in Flanders. There is no comparison. BTW I AM Chinese, my father cooked Chinese and I've been to Chinese restaurants all over the globe. The stuff most of the local places are serving isn't Chinese but Chinese/American. Chinese people would never eat that stuff themselves.

S B.

Yelp
Amazing food, great price, very very nice people. I've eaten here countless times (too many!) Everything you expect from Chinese takeout. Get the chicken lo mien. You won't regret it.

Joy M.

Yelp
this place is my favorite local chinese spot. they make a lot of stuff from scratch that other places buy frozen- eggrolls, dumplings etc. the family that runs it is very nice despite me personally witnessing customers being racist assholes on more than one occasion. shrimp are large and never overcooked and veggies always crisp and fresh.
