Shanghai Jianyeli Capella Hotel

I'd give this hotel 6 stars if possible and if you're visiting Shanghai, you need to stay here. It's a bit further from the more tourism-focused side of Shanghai but this area is wonderful to be in and easily connected to places like Xintiandi, Jingan temple, Huaihai road, etc. via Didi. The real reason to stay here is because this hotel is a love letter to Shanghai. The old Shikumen style hotel rooms, the Shanghainese style breakfasts, the old newspapers from historic Shanghai, etc.. So many of the little touches were beautiful, like the comic books included in the entertainment room which I'll be adding to my family's collection :) Nowhere else in the world will have hotel rooms in this style in a city so wonderful. The service was also fantastic. We had some additional requests that were addressed by staff and there were many little surprises that we greatly appreciated. The hotel also had a lot of activities and experiences (the Capella "rituals") that were enjoyable and added to the overall enjoyment of the hotel. The culturists/concierge were also very helpful with arranging our plans and giving useful, but not pushy suggestions. All in all, this truly is a special stay. Sean, Nicole, and Irina were wonderful (and everyone else I didn't catch the name of unfortunately!) and you're definitely in good hands at the Capella.

To say that I had an amazing stay would be an understatement. I was waffling between this and another property, and am SO glad that I chose this one for my four nights in Shanghai. Service is as hand-ons or as discreet as you would like -- Ms. Julie (I think that was her English name) saw that I really liked the package of nuts in the complimentary minibar, and gave me some extras on my last night. Each night I would come back to a different treat as part of the turn-down service: my favorite was the bookmark. I also loved how QUIET it was, for being in the FFC and in one of the world's busiest cities. ||My rate included breakfast, served in the Pierre Gagnaire restaurant. Food was flavorful, and as to be expected, the bread was great. I also learned that I like kale celery juice, haha. Sadly, I was in meetings and couldn't take part in any sessions of afternoon tea or happy hour...||Again, I must repeat: service was excellent. I know, at this price point, staff are supposed to be, but I also feel that there was proactivity AND warmth behind each interaction. There was a minor problem with the sink draining one night, and staff came right away to investigate. ||All in all a wonderful experience; I only wish I had stayed much longer. Ahh, there's always next time, right?

This review is for the excellent hospitality from the folks at Capella. First, they immediately delivered ten bottles to each room when we requested additional water. They carried all of our luggages up the stairs and were very attentive to our dietary restrictions when ordering in-room breakfast. This alone deserved a five star rating. What really stood out was the hotel’s generosity. We booked a non-refundable four night stay for our family, but due to elderly accessibility issues, we ended up switching to a different hotel. Not only did the Capella offer a full refund for our entire stay, they offered additional services such as carrying our luggages and calling a car to our new stay. We offered to pay for one night since we had washed up and used some disposable amenities, but they insisted on a full refund. 5/5 stars wonderful but short stay overall. Beautiful and luxurious rooms, but do be careful of booking if stairs are an issue. Definitely would come back next time if not traveling with elderly parents.

Absolutely speechless at the beauty of this place. Was living on borrowed time and money but oh man I do wish I could go back. All staff were extremely kind and friendly, and were so super sweet! Unexpectedly a child-friendly place because they took very good care of us. The breakfast was absolutely divine and we wish we had bigger tummies to eat more. Please book a room here for a minimum of 3 nights to fully enjoy the facilities and activities!! It will leave you with nothing but good memories:)

Remarkable 55 room hotel sweetly crafted & curated in a 1930 Shikumen building block, loving preserved. No real check in desk. They come to you.||Jaya Ibrahim was the designer and if you are not familiar with his work, check him out. Aman Resorts, The Puli-Shanghai to name a couple. ||Meals are presented in the Michelin Star Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire. ||Each guest room block is 4 stories, about 12’ wide, preserving the original apartment units.||All the rooms face an exterior pathway lined on one side with your private walled garden, the other side is the back of another row of units used as a servant entry for room service, which is the original Shikumen organization. ||Enter through your private garden into a 14’ tall ceiling reception and small powder room. ||A short flight of steps up to a TV room and minibar. ||Up yet again an even shorter flight of steps (6) to the bedroom with exceptionally tall ceilings, sitting area and wardrobe. ||Up another very short flight to the spacious bathroom. ||And finally up a steep stair to your private roof deck. ||I was a bit nervous buying into a townhouse configuration but it is really well done and not tiring at all for this arthritic fella. The only drawback is if you forget something in the bedroom when you leave for the day. ||The interior finishes are best described as a masterful blend of Asian and Western, which the Shikumens are. A modern interpretation of painted wood panel and raw silk panels, herringbone wood floors. ||The service is exceptional and it is what adds to the ambiance.

Top quality and classy hotel. Stayed for 4 nights in September 2025 via direct booking. Services were excellent. Staff were of high quality and helpful. We enjoyed the morning breakfast (Chinese and western version) at the Michelin starred restaurant. My partner tried Chinese massage (quite pricey) and jacuzzi (not warm however) and sauna and they were amazing. Gym is available too although we didn’t use it. Our hotel room has 5 floors. Just be aware there’s 3 flight of short stairs towards bedroom. Library was great and intimate and you can sit and enjoy your coffee, tea and cake all day. 1 free cocktail (1x) which changes each day from 530-630pm. We had a midnight flight. We continued to use facilities until we left. Will definitely recommend and come back again.

We stayed at Capella Shanghai for a home vacation, and it was a fantastic experience. Located at the core district of Shanghai, all rooms of Capella are in luxuriously vintage Shi’ku’men style with a unique vibe - something you won’t find elsewhere. Not to mention the top-tier service and utilities. We were very satisfied and look forward to visiting again.

Excellent hospitality, Would like to thank you the hotel for extended my check -out time to 20:00, because my flight time is 23:45. I enjoy my stay here and get calligraphy class. Nice and cozy room. Dellicious breakfast.
