Google
Great food for the price, everything had good flavor and taste, the cream cheese wontons are fantastic. They made 6 dinners in 15 mins! Overall would come back again.

Got the lunch combo for dinner. They don’t have any good dinner combos for people with shellfish allergies, with them saying no substitutions and having fried shrimp as part of every combo. They charge $3.50 more for getting a lunch combo after 3 pm, without giving more food. Service was pretty fast and friendly. Not overly welcoming though. Their dine in area is rather small as well. Got the sweet and sour chicken, chicken chow mein, egg drop soup and egg rolls. The sweet and sour chicken and chicken chow mein seemed a bit try/overcooked. The sweet and sour sauce was pretty good. The egg rolls seemed decent too. Pretty good value for the amount of food you get.

On our recent visit, my wife had the orange chicken and I had salt and pepper calamari. Calamari is often a chewey dish, but this was bouncier than most. The first bites were like tire rubber. The calamari softened a bit as it cooled but remained stiff. It needed to cooked more or tenderized more or both. I wish that I had ordered salt and pepper shrimp instead. My wife was neutral on her orange chicken. Overall, the food is a little better than average strip mall Chinese food. My large Tsing Tao beer was $10.50. It seemed a little stiff to me. If you read other reviews of this site, you will find that your overall experience here will depend on the mood of owner (???) at the register. Based on my multiple visits, her mood can range from 1 to a 4. (Never a 5.) She was in a good mode tonight. Beware if she is on the phone when you enter. It's the nearest Chinese food to my home. I will come back, but it is always an adventure.

Came here for the first time the other day for dinner because we've never been! Walked in and the lady working there in the front desk was on a phone call with a customer and didn't even acknowledge us walking in. The customer on the phone sounded like she was ordering food for a party so it literally took 10 minutes of our time. My daughter and I just sat there waiting for our order. The lady then had another call coming in so we waited ANOTHER 5 minutes without being acknowledged. When she got off the phone, we finally got our order (it was a phone order). We ordered one of their dinner combinations that came with orange chicken, fried wontons, egg roll, fried shrimp, chicken broccoli, chicken chow mein, and pork fried rice. I remember the total being $16+ as of 6/2024. Not bad ! We took the food home and everything was delicious. Orange chicken was juicy, fried wontons were fried to perfection, egg roll was yummy, fried shrimp was fried to perfection, chicken broccoli was yum, chow mein was delicious, and pork fried rice was yum! I'm so happy we found something closer to us than Panda Express if we're in a hurry for Chinese food. Wish the service was a bit more welcoming, though. Come check them out!

Crispy noodles, ginger beef, and a little piece of Valley heaven Let me just say this: Shanghai Chinese in Visalia has crispy pan-fried noodles. Like, actually crispy — fried on both sides. After four long years away from the Valley (trapped in an Oklahoma Chinese food wasteland), I was dreaming of this exact thing. And they delivered. Absolute fire. I paired the noodles with their ginger beef and — boom — perfection. Honestly, that combo is all I need in life. My only personal nitpick? I’d love it even more without the carrots and green onions. Just give me that bold ginger and beef magic and I’m set. But I’m confident Judy (name on the receipt and clearly the MVP) will get me squared away next time when I ask. It was still delicious — a solid 99 out of 100, with one point docked for the veggies I didn’t ask for (haha). We also tried the lemon chicken — great balance, not too tart, and a family favorite across the board. And to put them to the real test? We ordered the pork fried rice. It’s the benchmark dish, and this one? Easily one of the best we’ve had anywhere. Packed with flavor, clearly made with love (and hopefully a generous shake of MSG — yum). Yes, prices are a little higher than I remember from Valley standards, but the portions, flavor, and service — especially from the kind, no-nonsense lady up front — more than made it worth it. Shanghai Chinese is the real deal. We’ll be back. Often.

Another wonderful experience and waitress was extremely friendly and helpful. Food came out fast and hot. This is our third time, and we look forward to many more. Very happy!!

Google
The food is great!! I normally get the dinner combination 2. The egg rolls are perfect. Crispy on the outside. Everything I've tried is delicious. Definitely recommend.

Google
Popular place that serves hot, delicious plates with a family-oriented climate. So much family-like they made an off the menu item just for me asking. Spicy but not taste masking. Post dinner soup was hot and delicious. I would've paid double for the portion size but don't tell them that. Great place with great environment.

Yelp
The food was ok. Everyone in my group ordered the $13 lunch special but we were all charged $17. You should be charging the price on your menu or you need to update your menu to reflect accurate pricing. That's a big difference 13 to 17.

Yelp
Food good. Service a bit lacking, but I think she was alone. SEATing odd. Overall would return.

Beela G.

Yelp
They are quick with their service. The quality of the food is always great. The food and the service has never disappointed! My favorite Chinese food spot!

Adi Cohen C.

Yelp
Food is great!! veg egg roll, chicken chao mein, orange chicken, beef fried rice. we are here with the kids. Great service. food is fresh and delicious!!

Ilissa F.

Yelp
My favorite Chinese food in the area. Sizzling steak haku is my favorite. House rice is delicious. Best food and great service.

Jessica B.

Yelp
We ordered some take out last night & let me tell you this place did not disappoint. The containers were so stuffed they couldn't close all the way, the food was freshly made & so good. The staff is very friendly & I would definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
We weren't very impressed with the Shanghai ... the waitress was very nice the food not so good . Sweet and sour pork very hard outside and meat was tough . My g daughter wanted spicy ordered something that they said was very spicy it wasn't . We won't go again .
google avatar

Thomas H.

Yelp
Shanghai is the best Chinese food in Visalia, hands down. The service is always excellent, food is freshly made and the consistency of their dishes is great!

Yelp
We were around the area so we decided to try this place again. It was once one of our favorite Chinese food restaurants. I ordered a few favorites beef chow fun, Peking spareribs and Mapo tofu. Everything was delicious! I enjoyed the stir fried bean sprouts and white onions it made the whole dish tasty!! The Mapo tofu was delicious we had to get a couple of small bowls of rice to eat with the lobster sauce. The Peking spareribs was the best I've had in a while!! If you enjoy sweet and sour pork you'll love this it's just on another level! Lol The service was good a little bit crowded as we started eating. So it got a bit slow. But we still did manage to get our drinks filled and containers for our food. Ambiance well it was definitely casual that day. It was in between lunch and dinner, so many employees were eating which was ok. But some of the customers were super loud?! Very annoying I almost wanted to get our food to go. I had to say something which I don't like to do but after a while it subsided..

Corey M.

Yelp
Food is very fresh and service is timely. It is evident they've been busy today but they are all working to attend to each guest.
google avatar

Keaton H.

Yelp
Prices have gone up significantly and the quality of portions and food hasn't maintained the same level pre-pandemic. We still like the food it's just not the same level it used to be. They are finally open inside again for dining and not just take out. I have added updated better quality photos of their menu as the prices have all changed.

Ashley I.

Yelp
I've been here a few times when I used to live close by. Decided to try it again post covid and it doesn't feel the same.. the hard part is.. its sometimes salty and sometimes not so salty. I think this place is def a hit or miss but the locals within the area seem to love it alot.
google avatar

Lawrence H.

Yelp
Small quaint spot with friendly staff. We didn't know what to expect, but saw the reviews and decided to try it. We are very happy with the food that is tasty and fresh! They definitely do what they do well and it tasted great! Did not taste like the average quick stop Chinese. We would love to try it again when we come back!
google avatar

Alyssa H.

Yelp
Called ahead of time for pick up, I asked how long it was going to be and they said 25 min. Had to go in three times and when we got our food it wasn't even lukewarm. On the plus side the food had pretty good taste but if I ever do come back....I will want to eat inside. This was our first time coming here.
google avatar

Mathias B.

Yelp
Love this place. Eat there every time my parents are in town. People there are nice and the food is great. Plus gotta love the green booths. Hot tip get the Shanghai Chow Mein and Kung Pao Chicken.

Yelp
Omg If you see my name on Chinese Food Restaurant then they are a 5 stars there pot Stickers or the Best, I get A or C every thing was so good the pot stickers are so good and made perfect but everything I ate was so good and made fresh it was not greasy and I felt great after eating please go try it because good Chinese Food is hard to find

Joel H.

Yelp
I agree, the food is very good. The service however, is lacking, borderline lousy. Sorry Shanghai, this was my first time eating at your restaurant and you know what they say, you only get one shot at a first impression. So if you like good food but don't mind crappy service, this is your place!
google avatar

Yelp
When visiting my mother in law she suggest this place for dinner. We decided to order quite a bit of food for 4 people. Our ordered consisted of orange chicken, sweet and sour chicken, chicken with snow peas, steamed fish, pot stickers, chicken chow mein, and steamed rice. I want to start off by saying the steamed fish is amazing!!!! It's on a bed of Broccoli with ginger and green onions. It's full of so much flavor cooked perfectly and it's just absolutely delicious. If you are a lover of ginger like I am don't skip out on this dish. During my college days I worked at a Chinese's restaurant that was amazing, well this place reminded me so much of it. I will definitely be ordering food from this restaurant again when in town. Every dish we had was amazing! I sometimes feel Chinese food can be very salty, but all of the food was perfectly seasoned not salty just flavorful.

Debbie S.

Yelp
This was my first visit at this restaurant. I heard alot of good things about so I decided to try it. The food was good not the best I've had but decent. The service was really good and the place seemed. However, the one BIG complaint is when I was enjoying my dinner I noticed the one cook go to the bathroom with one glove on and when he was done he came out with the same glove on. Mind you the toilet was still flushing as he walked out. I thought I was imagining it but it happened again as we were getting ready to leave. It was so obvious and I will Never go again.

Yelp
2 of my favorite dishes at Shanghai's. The food is made with fresh ingredients and always great service.

Richard W.

Yelp
Food is a little pricey but it's worth it. Always get the dinner combo #2 when I'm craving this place. The orange chicken and sweet and sour pork are very good here. The egg fu yong is my favorite thing
google avatar

Carmen R.

Yelp
Order a #2 dinner cost about 15 bucks. Once order was ready my husband asked for a small cup of water and she said it would be 2 dollars for a small cup of water he said never mind ! He said she was very rude.( mind you my husband is very nice and easy going ). Once we got home the serving was very small and very salty :( so I didn't eat any !! I will never go back service bad and food was gross !
google avatar

Jenny M.

Yelp
This is by far the BEST Chinese food in the area. It is a must anytime we are in the area. The food is extremely fresh. The girls are always friendly and efficient. Sometimes there is a bit of a wait for food but that's because it's made to order and fresh. We love Judy the owner. She treats us like family.
google avatar

Liz V.

Yelp
I absolutely loved the portion sizes here! I really appreciated the delicious wontons, calamari ring & egg roll I received with the dinner combo! I recommend the orange chicken here because it's plentiful, and they use white meat for the inside of the chicken! The fried rice had awesome flavor too! Got the dinner special and it was very easy to order online through the website linked here :)
google avatar

Cher C.

Yelp
My Family and I got extremely sick from eating at Shanghai. We ordered a variety dinner plates. I called the restaurant and spoke to an employee to let her know and the owner redialed my number complaining to me that nobody else has complained... The inside of the restaurant is also very dirty. Would not recommend!
google avatar

Caroline K.

Yelp
Delicious food and nice menu. We ordered takeout and it was very convenient. The portions were filling. We especially enjoyed the potstickers.

Michael D.

Yelp
Had a takeout order of Kung Pao, very warm and flavorful! Didn't eat in the restaurant, but it's got big windows in a nice looking location. Front of house seemed a bit short staffed, but the food was delicious. First visit, but it's already definitely within my top 3 Chinese places for Visalia.
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
Best Chinese restaurant in town! Food is fresh and delicious. Take out is fast and convenient. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
google avatar

Sherring G.

Yelp
The best Chinese food in town! Forget Panda Express! Spend the same amount of money on one of the lunch or dinner combinations here! They give you large portions so you can easily share one between two people and still be extremely full! They are quick for takeout and dine in! I always love whenever Judy is our server as she is always so nice and friendly! If you listen closely they are always playing relaxing and uplifting Christian music in the background and as a believer, I really appreciate it! They are super tucked away in the corner of the the save mart shopping area by El D so it's easy to miss but, once you've tried their food it's had to forget! I love starting and ending my meals with their egg flour soup!
google avatar

Yelp
My FAVORITE dinner soup at a Chinese restaurant in Visalia. Hands down. I order it frequently and the owner, Judy, knows my order when I walk in. Not open for dine-in at this time, but I will enjoy my food at home. Also, face masks are still required. Respect the business requirements. I also really like the egg foo young. I have been coming year for as long as I can remember and I have never had a bad dish. Definitely my favorite Chinese restaurant in Visalia. Check it out.
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
This has to be the best Chinese food in town. For some reason I always want Chinese on Mondays, when they're closed. My honey likes the Walnut Shrimp & i like the Chicken Asparagus. I'm never let down w/ the food, but the wait for the food is long. They need more help inside the restaurant. Take out orders, the 15-20 minutes is always 30-50.. but the food is delicious

Andy P.

Yelp
This is one of our go to restaurants. Food is alway fresh and amazing. Really good flavor and serv hot. Even by the time we take our order home, it's still hot!
google avatar

Andres S.

Yelp
Good food, good prices, hearty portions and there food wasn't overly greasy like other Chinese restaurants. A+ very good food.

Steve B.

Yelp
Shanghai's Health Score is down to 86 ? This restaurant is not the quality, Flavor and Taste it once was
google avatar

Brian K.

Yelp
Been going here for years, Salt & pepper chicken is just insane, also the almond cookies slap.
google avatar

Yelp

Yelp
Decided on Chinese food. Wanted delivery. Checked and saw Shanghai in Visalia. Reviews were good but have seen that b4 and after say. They taste different than we do. But Shanghai did not disappoint. No greasy taste or feel. Everything seemed very fresh. And WOW very good. The pot stickers we looked at and thought oh no lots of doughy nothing. No these are large and they are stuffed full with yummy. No excess dough. The egg rolls are crisp and juicy and again very good. Got pork chow mien with top 1/2 fried an bottom 1/2 loose noodles. Way bunch of noodles and topping. Veggie's very crisp and yummy. Everything we got was a lot and delicious. So very please to find Shanghai Chinese restaurant. Recommend to all who like Chinese food.
google avatar

Nicklas J.

Yelp
If you want good fast food style Chinese food you can't go wrong with Shanghai. Their fried rice and chow mein are the perfect to go style.
google avatar

Audrianna M.

Yelp
Used to be our go to place for Chinese food. Ordered tonight through doordash and the food was DISGUSTING. Took one bite and we all had to throw it away. It did not taste fresh at all. The only flavor it had was from the grease it was all cooked in. A complete waste of almost $70.

Patsy O.

Yelp
The food here is good. But don't go there at dinner time because they close the restaurant so their chefs/cooks can eat their dinner. I guess the chefs are more important than the customers! We won't be coming back!

Publius S.

Yelp
Consistent with most of the Chinese places in Visalia. Good, but I have not found a distinguishing item. I usually order Orange Chicken, Mongolian Beef, Chicken Wings, and Chicken Chow Mein. All generally good.
google avatar

Patino J.

Yelp
It's a no for me. We walked in a family seated to our left enjoying a meal. As we waited to be seated we're stared at by the waitress feeling weird I say hello which snaps her back. She asks pick up? My husband says no dine in. That's when she starts with oh I don't know if she's taking anymore customers. Looking like she didn't want to serve us another woman walks out giving us a crazy stare. The waitress tells her they want to dine in. They both look at each other and start saying we're not really set up for dine in but remember there's a family eating to our left. I'm sure they make great food I'm just sorry they weren't welcoming. So we said it's ok and left. I really wanted chowmein.

Amy D.

Yelp
My go-to place for awesome Chinese food! Judy is the owner and is always friendly! Her food is amazing and it is the only Chinese food that I can eat without gaining 5 pounds of fluid from too much salt!

Sarah G.

Yelp
Best chinese food restaurant in town!! I recommend eating inside the restaurant rather than takeout because if you order a combo, you get soup for free. The best things to order are the basics, which is fried rice and chow-mein. You cant go wrong with any of the dinner combos. The portions of one dinner combo is good enough for two people to eat off of. If you go during lunch, they have more combo options for cheaper. If you havent tried their honey-walnut shrimp and you like seafood, i 10/10 recommend. The place is always clean when i go, and the staff is always friendly. Judy is my favorite. There is lots of parking around and im able to park up close. This is my go-to restaurant for chines food.
google avatar

Ashley D.

Yelp
I blame it on the times right now. We called in and ordered take out at 5:30, and was told about a 45 minutes wait. We show up an hour later and we still waited ANOTHER hour. I wanted to cancel the order, but my husband did not want to be rude. We get our order and they packed the food into tiny boxes not appropriate for the type of food ordered. And the worst of it was the calamari. It was WAAAAAY overcooked and impossible to eat as it was too tough. It had too much breading, which is not how they typically prepare it. I say wait.....don't go there for awhile. Especially at dinner time. We came home and my kids ate Pb&J.

Tim D.

Yelp
Food great. Service great. Our waitress Ariel Wonderful. Judy you were a kick also. Little cold when that door kept opening but overall a very nice experience. . Thank and Bless You Both.

Yelp
Ordered food here and while waiting for the food I asked the white female waitress if I can use the restroom, she said it was broken, then I saw one of the cook walked in and used it..... After about 10 mins I really couldn't hold it in anymore so I asked the owner if I can use it or not, she said yes. I think I deserve the right to use the facility when I actually spent money in there. Oh also, the food was AWFUL! We were visiting from out of town, I told my friend not to order Chinese in tiny towns like this, but she didn't believe me, so we did anyway, and after we got back to our hotel and had a bite, we both looked at each other and gave each other a WTF kinda look. We just drank the soup from the wonton soup, but didn't eat the wontons cuz they were very bland and dry( when food got freezed for too long it becomes dry even if you put it in soup). Let's not even bring up the HK style stir fry noodles, we LITERALLY took one bite and threw it away, quote from my friend "I'd rather eat my own hair than this." Anyway, we only drank the soup and threw away the rest. And she learned a lesson:Don't ever eat Chinese food in small towns, because they are for non-chinese people.

Irene W.

Yelp
If you are looking for a good Chinese restaurant in Visalia, you will find it here at Shanghai Chinese Restaurant! I had a taste for some Chinese food so I thought I would try it out as it's close to my home. It did not disappoint! Wow! I had the beef with broccoli and I ate the whole thing! I have also recognized the fact that the times I've returned, it always draws a crowd. I guess the word is out and it's certainly on my list of favorite restaurants to enjoy in our lovely Visalia community!
