Founding Farmers Is Now Open in Reston | Eater DC

"After nearly 40 years in the hospitality industry, septuagenarian restaurateur Kwok Cheung is closing Chinese mainstay Shanghai Village at the end of the year; the longtime restaurant is located at 4929 Bethesda Avenue and Kwok is looking forward to retiring." - Warren Rojas

I love Drunken Noodles — they’re one of my favorite dishes — so I ordered two: one beef and one chicken. What I got was not Drunken Noodles. This was just plain noodles with no flavor and definitely nothing like authentic Thai Drunken Noodles. Really disappointed. Would not recommend this place.

Google
Not sure what’s going on with the food downtown but my walnut shrimp look rough and only because I was hungry did I continue to eat. Shrimp was dry and didn’t have much taste. We order here regularly as this is one of the best restaurants in town. Very dissatisfied with our meal this evening

Becka C.

Google
We went here with a friend because we were downtown for the evening. Met at 5:30 pm and had to park a couple blocks away due to the art walk that night. My friend had a chicken vegetable dish which they said was good. My husband liked his food. I ordered sesame tofu. The flavor was good but the fried tofu was overly crunchy and pretty tough. The atmosphere is ok; they do have a large fish tank. There was a huge group that came in after us so they can definitely accommodate large groups even though the restaurant seemed small.

The guy working there was so nice! I was surprised that he remembered our order without using a device! In my opinion, the sesame chicken is very good!

Google
Dashing, your wait times are getting worse. Please consider adding more time for you to prepare order in the app. You may be unaware. But the feature is in there. Update, just talked to restaurant about this, I stayed calm, restaurant owner immediately started yelling at me asking me "what he is supposed to do he is cooking the food"! Jeez man. Calm down and listen. But he heard me the first time. He just doesn't care. Yelling at me also "if we don't want the order just don't come here"! how about we just take a long break and let your food get ice cold so you can make it again or get disgruntled customers that will buy elsewhere. Most unprofessional owner of a restaurant I've ever met. Classical I suppose of the Chinese restaurants in movies, guess that's real

We ordered pick up and got home only to find the sweet & sour chicken had no sweet & sour sauce. I called and let them know and they delivered it to my house. Based on that kind of customer service, I’m glad to leave a 5 star review! They were so apologetic and nice about it. The food was good and the pot stickers and sauce are delicious!

Google
First time to this establishment. I love the variety! With so many choices it was hard to decide. I went with the Hot and Sour Soup and my main dish was Drunken Noodles Seafood. I never had Drunken Noodles before. Pretty tasty and very filling dish. The price was good and the service was fast and friendly. I would love to come back and try something I'm a little more acquainted with and see how it compares. Overall a good experience!

Update : June 13th, 2024 Tried a new dish and it was Amazingly delicious was the BBQ Pork in Hot Garlic Sauce with fried rice . Highly recommend. Always friendly and great service. The newest pic is the last one Amazing service and very friendly. The food was amazing and the egg drop soup was delicious. So hard to find good egg drop soup. I got one side and three entrees which was F on the menu. fantastic. I got orders from here and decided to try and glad I did. Highly recommend.. On July 28th got A which was One side 2 entrees. And that is Rice cashew chicken and sesame chicken. So damn good and the takeout portion is amazing. Got more soup to and some hot sour soup to I think it all smells so good as I not eaten yet. Thank you ! Cook everything so aromatic and flavors are beautiful. Last pic is the take out

Yelp
8.5/10 - great lunch spot with friendly staff and basically zero wait times. Can you believe I got all of this food for $14.99? This was a STEAL of delicious, hot food.

Yelp
Food was bland. Counter service was passable. Atmosphere as depressing. Initial appearance and attitude mean a lot.

Yelp
The best authentic Chinese food, and I'm from Seattle. I DoorDash'd and it arrived piping hot!! The bbq pork is to die for!!! Thank you so much for amazing food

Marcia S.

Yelp
Dirty, unfriendly and the food was disappointing! We will not be back. The whole place was a mess and very disappointing.

Len S.

Yelp
Good food. Healthy choices. If you are hungry and care about how you will feel during and after and want to have a joyful experience, you will appreciate what they do here

Yelp
Not the best food and a little pricey for me. Our kids didn't like anything But great service

Yelp
This place is the bomb. We ordered Pork Drunken Noodles, Beef Broccoli, Chicken Fried Rice, Potstickers and Egg Rolls. It was all amazing. The Potstickers and Egg Rolls were the best I've ever had. Looking forward to the next time I'm in Billings for a cattle sale.

Yelp
Odd little place being right downtown amongst so many fancy places! They're very used to online orders to go and the delivery services, not so used to dine in customers! The Potstickers and Cab Rangoon are delicious! Came out hot and fast, nice and crispy with great flavor. Everything came out nearly at the same time so be prepared to eat, no time for appetizer snacking!! I had the Cashew Chicken and Chow Mein, both seriously lacked flavor. The Cashew Chicken was sweet with tons of different veggies, never had it that way before. Didn't care for the sweetness. Hubby had a spicy beef dish and said the flavors were good, just not enough meat. I found there to be plenty of chicken but the pieces were huge thin slices so some were a bit dry. We got chicken fried rice and chicken chow mein to go for another meal and both were quite disappointing. Again, huge pieces of thinly sliced chicken just put on top of the rice and chow mein, not mixed throughout. Service was good and attentive so we enjoyed our visit, main entrees just weren't up to par. We'd totally return for the pot stickers and crab rangoon though!!

Tammie Y.

Yelp
The taste. There is none. I would rather eat at Panda Express. It's much better. There was lots of food, but no flavor at all. Why?
google avatar

Marie H.

Yelp
I love their fried rice. It's my absolute favorite thing there. Lol Never been inside

Yelp
**This review is based solely on the food we received, as we had it delivered to our hotel room.** Our food was delivered hot. We received plenty of plastic cutlery and napkins. All the appropriate sauces were provided and were very good. We LOVED the pot stickers, and the pork egg rolls were very good. The shrimp and mushrooms entree was okay. The shrimp were over done, the mushrooms and zucchini were tender, and I liked the garlic flavors. I was just missing a little more salt and spice. The chow mein was also okay, lacking enough sauce. The Sesame Chicken Entree was a complete let down. The fried breading on the chicken pieces had fully sponged up the deep-fryer oil making it very greasy with no crispiness and looking greyish in color. The fried rice was very dry and bland with very little flavor at all. All in all we would not choose to dine here again. 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 20oz bottles of soda - $50 (not including tip)

Yelp
We door dashed pad Thai from this place. Coming from a place where there are a ton of legit Asian restaurants this is the first time we have had food in billings that was better than where we moved from. I can't speak to any of the other dishes here, but if you like pad Thai, grab some from Shanghai village. You won't be disappointed.

Stuart W.

Yelp
This was an outstanding meal in Billings, right next to the Art House cinema. While I sat at my table and enjoyed the restaurant, I saw many people from various delivery services come in and out. But honestly, just eat here. The service is great. The food is above the level of what you pay for it for sure. I was pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality of food. I got the meal with Sesame chicken, general Tao's chicken and orange chicken and it was incredible. Will definitely be back again. Now on to see a film!

Sandy L.

Yelp
good food! will order again!! again. most bs has to do with the lame brain, "setup:" do not want to interact with "the ai. i think this ai set up really sucks! i am not able to order menu items because your setup, sucks!
google avatar

Steve N.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem. The quality of the food is big City Asian wonderful. Based on the service, the flavor, and the presentation, all of their tables should be full all the time. It doesn't look like much from the street, but who cares? Billings should be lining up.
google avatar

Alyssa L.

Yelp
I love Singapore noodles. These were actually not bad at all. I did however have a few bites of what seems like dirt. Possibly from improperly cleaned bean sprouts/veggies? Anyways, the flavor was spot on. I feel that the price is a little crazy ($17) but there is a good portion. Not $17 worth of a portion though.
google avatar

Nancy H.

Yelp
We love it. Every item is prepared to perfection! Service is great ! Eating there or taking it home, food is awesome!

Zac B.

Yelp
My wife and I just happened on this restaurant while we were cruising around looking for someplace to eat. We decided to go in and try it, the Staff was very friendly and the food we found to be a lot better than any of the Chinese food we tried so far in Billings. This restaurant has a great selection of dishes. We will definitely be back and will recommend to our friends.
google avatar

Anastasia C.

Yelp
If you came from Alaska like us and had long flights, this place is the bomb. Really big portions and absolutely delicious crab wontons. If we come back to this area we are definitely coming again. Really nice staff too! Seemed really empty but there were tons of door dash orders.

Nicole S.

Yelp
This is a hidden treasure food is amazing please check this place out it is smaller so call to make sure there is seating
google avatar

Elivia T.

Yelp
Love there food, good prices and amazing service. Got my food out writhing 5-10 minutes waiting love the wait time and how welcoming and kind they are. Although there are in a very sketchy place still a great place to go eat when feeling Chinese food.
google avatar

Amber D.

Yelp
Good good, every time! I can always count on Shanghai for my Chinese food cravings! I love their General T'so chicken and lo mein!

Derek G.

Yelp
the food is amazing! the flavors are vibrant and the food is always hot. If you are dining in its a cute little restaurant
google avatar

Yelp
We found this place by accident while in Billings. The food was great, the service was fantastic, and we would go there again. The portions are huge, if that is what you are into, but they could easily charge the same for less volume. They clearly understand the meaning of service. Try them.
google avatar

Robyn T.

Yelp
Clean and tidy. Hot and fresh food! Fast friendly service! The best hot and sour soup I have had in years!!
google avatar

Rose P.

Yelp
OMG 5 STARS!!! Some of the best, freshest, hottest Chinese food I've ever had! Do these guys have a time machine? My order arrived piping hot in 20 minutes!!! Unbelievable. I ordered the Shanghai Low Mein, Sesame Chicken, and egg rolls. Servings are huge, the flavor is so fresh and unbelievably delicious. Sesame chicken is crispy and perfect. Low-Mein is Legit! None of the spaghetti noodle crap...this is the real deal! No complaints...great flavor...fast delivery. What's not to love?
google avatar

Veronika G.

Yelp
Great takeout! It seems that this location is only open for take out, no eat in dining. We tried their make your own family meal deals and it was a hit! (Broccoli Beef, General Tso's Chicken, Bourbon Chicken, and Honey Walnut Shrimp with Fried Rice). Don't forget to order Crab Rangoons! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm so torn on Shanghai, I swear, it's a 50/50 you'll either get some of the best American Chinese food you've ever had, or some of the worst. Very inconsistent quality, not sure if maybe sometimes they're making fresh and sometimes they're filling orders from the buffet or what, but I've had enough bad times with greasy cold fried rice and dry chow mein I'm not risking it anymore. Also, they seem to use very little meat in their dishes, you might find a tiny little morsel in a big fried dough ball when you order orange chicken. On the plus side, if you like quantity, Shanghai is the place for you, the amount you get for what you pay is massive.
google avatar

Lynne B.

Yelp
This place was recommended by a friend. The first time it was fresh and hot. This last time it wasn't even lukewarm. Must have been pre prepared and barely warmed up in the microwave. Not what I expected for how much we paid.
google avatar

Tim D.

Yelp
Went there on a whim, was lunchtime and I was hungry Had a feeling it had been around for quite some time, tried the buffet, was not disappointed Nice compact food offerings, was tasty and fresh! Surprise, surprise!! Well cooked and nothing soggy, a bonus! This was a good Chinese lunch buffet meal. Nice wait staff, will be back

Yelp
Things have changed. It started with the egg foo young and fried rice; suddenly everything had peas. The egg foo young went a little soupy. The fried rice went from 'okay' to something more akin to an afterthought. Our favorite dish, twice cooked pork, went from having an abundance of (often dry, but still quite good) pork and cabbage, to being absolutely loaded with vegetables and far less meat, which significantly altered the flavor of the whole dish. Despite previously being one of our favorite take-out spots, we haven't been back since December 6, 2017. Based on the last few times we went, and assuming they haven't suddenly reverted to their old practices, this place is a definite pass.

Yelp
I ordered Shanghai for my family online and my order didn't seem to go through so I called in. The gal who answered assured my order had been received and the food would be ready in 15-20 minutes. She asked that in the future I order directly from their website because ordering through yelp turned it into a grub hub order and that is bad for their business. I agreed. The food was hot fresh and wonderful. I will definitely order again.
google avatar

Yelp
You get what you pay for $9.99 it'll take care of your hunger. Basic american chinese food to fill ya up and hit the road Remember folks... don't be so picky

Yelp
U know wat. Im a truck driver, and i really thought the food was gonna be not good. But i truly was mistakin It was delicious and they delievered to my semi truck. Prices was great. Way for food than i could handle. Even tho i was just a little difficult With ordering my food and my location. They found me. I was amazed how fast my food was delievered. I even tipped the driver good. I so am ordering again. And i was craving chinese food for over a month.
google avatar

Christopher L.

Yelp
This place is awesome. I moved here last year and the quality, portions, prices, and delivery time are always on point. Not even eating here today but felt inspired to give a review because 3.5 stars is criminal. This spot is a 5!
google avatar

Dana K.

Yelp
We visited when we were traveling through town on a weekend so the buffet wasn't available. Food arrived fast, portions were very large. Food was tasty and we all liked it including my 2 and 6 year olds.
google avatar

Dawn W.

Yelp
Love their food and generally don't have mistakes with our order. I am thankful they deliver. However, they offer free delivery and then when you go to check out there's a "convenience fee" tagged on. I'm okay with paying a little extra, but don't offer free delivery and call your fee something else. Would also like to see more selection on their menu.

Yelp
Me & my husband would always come to this restaurant too eat, celebrate & for a snack, but the last few times we had ordered here we have been getting sick, the first was I. So we had ordered our usual & than moments after I had been running to the toilet with the s*its, so after I was very if'y on going back, but my husband wanted some Chinese/Oriental food so, decided & we ordered & as the same result only it was my partner who was running to the toilet with the s*its, now we are not sure about the place, sad to say because we loved ordering here. I would like to add no starts sorry.

Danielle O.

Yelp
Working in Billings for the weekend and tried this place! Got the pepper steak and general Tso chicken with the wontons! All was excellent!

Anna W.

Yelp
Lost my business when they preset what entrees and sides you could have. You used to be able to choose which entrees you could have for their plate options. Now it's all pre-selected. This used to be our go-to Chinese place but now we will be trying other places.

Tonja J.

Yelp
Entourage from Washington state to South Dakota, my brother and I wereJonesing for Chinese food. We wanted something that wasn't that far off of I-90 so we chose Shanghai Village, which closes at 9:30 and would give us an hour to eat. The food was delicious: I had Beef and Green Beans and my brother had Pork with Hot Garlic Sauce. Being from Seattle, we are picky about our Chinese food but this stuff was yummy. About the review: I would have given this place 5 stars but the hostess took wayyyy too long to acknowledge us or take our order.
google avatar

Randy S.

Yelp
I was surprised as to how delicious it was. Went for a late lunch 1.15 pm and the buffet was good, hot and well stocked. $9.99 and worth it. I will return for sure. Thanks
google avatar

Janet S.

Yelp
Have eaten lunch here a few times and agree that it's a great buffet that is well tended by friendly staff. Decor is a bit lacking, so don't go there for the ambiance - but if you want good food at a good price, it's your place. Hubby and I phoned in an order for take-out last night (a Saturday). When I picked up it, it appeared the restaurant was closed (even though they should have been open for several more hours), and an employee was waiting for me with our dinner, and locked up as soon as I left. Strange. But...the food was great, priced comparable to other Chinese restaurants in town - and there was enough for at least 4 people. On top of that there was one cartoon marked "Free" that was full of cream cheese wontons. Nice! We live near downtown and this has definitely become our go-to Chinese restaurant.

Traci W.

Yelp
I made my first (and) last online order on New Years Eve at 7pm and at that time the web site said said a 1 hour wait. At 8pm we called and were told it was very busy but the food was on the way. Another hour goes by and still no food. We call again and are told the driver was just leaving which contradicts the previous claim that our "food was on its way". The older gentleman told us to tell the driver that we are to get a 50% refund for being so late. I called on Friday January 1st and a lady told me my next order would be 50% off. I told her no, I was to be refunded 50%. She said to give it until Tuesday January 5th. I have yet to receive a refund on my credit card. The food was really good and we were excited to find a new Chinese restaurant that we liked. But with this experience and with the dishonesty we will not be ordering from this restaurant again.
google avatar

Nathaniel N.

Yelp
This place has so much potential, but suffers from the same dubious meat quality as most midwestern independent Chinese joints. Eating my sweet & sour pork--delicious sauce, well-cooked rice--all I could think was "why is this so chewy/boney/gristley?" Fill up on apps instead; wontons & potstickers are killer.
google avatar

Joseph A.

Yelp
The absolute worst Chinese food I've ever had my entire life. Two egg rolls were cold and Soggy, Sesame beef was soggy and very chewy. Didn't get my drink that I ordered and paid for, to say the least if I'm ever in Billings again I'll never order food from that place again.

Jeff M.

Yelp
They have the best customer service and the food always comes hot. I really like this place keep up the good work I'm a customer for life.
google avatar

Jeff D.

Yelp
We ordered from there last night and got eggrolls, beef and broccoli, Cung Pao chicken, chicken lo Mein. It was all very good and they delivered it promptly. My only complaint is that the eggroll could've been better and they did not give spicy mustard. I am guessing that they would give it if you asked for it.
google avatar

Virgil M.

Yelp
We went based on the reviews. Worst Chinese food I have ever eaten. Hot tea was horrible
