16 of the Best Spots for Chinese Food in Metro Detroit

"Shangri-La is a local favorite for Cantonese cuisine. Reflective of her own heritage (born in Thailand to Chinese parents) owner Cholada “Nancy” Chan has developed her restaurant into a catch-all destination for everything from Thai-style Massaman curry to bubble tea, and roasted duck noodle soup." - Danny Palumbo

Google
Ordered the sesame beef with hot and sour soup—both were excellent. Water service was consistent, and Conall checked in frequently. Great value overall, plus I appreciated the QR code receipt and the military discount.

Google
I’m not here to talk about authenticity. Because at the end of the day, authentic or not, if it tastes good, it tastes good. The soup was rich and thick, just the way I like it. The pan fried noodles were heavy with the sauce, also outstanding. A little of the salty side, but I prefer salty over bland any day. Will return for more.

Google
This was such an amazing Saturday experience. The food was wonderful. Egg soup was so much better then I dreamed possible. Loved the tea, so very flavorful. The whole place exuded calm and peace. I truly loved the meal and ambience!

Truth Matters

Google
This is our favorite Chinese food restaurant in the Springs. We always go for lunch specials and have never been disappointed.

Eva

Google
That would be my favorite Chinese / Cantonese cuisine! Definitely Cantonese restaurant, it is pretty difficult to find a restaurant taste more like my hometown in this town. Highly recommend!!!!!!👍

Google
Every time I've come here, I've received exceptional service. The owner and his staff are very adamant on ensuring you get a great experience dining with them and are willing to take the steps to make it right for you if mistakes have been made. Always very kind people as well, lovely experience every time without fail!

Google
Shangri-La is once again the premier chinese food restaurant in the Springs. Their prices are in line with the quality and quantity of food you get. Great Staff!

Google
Not…good. Spent nearly $90 on dinner delivery for two. I will say the service was excellent and delivery was perfectly on time. However, the food was unbelievably sub-par. It was cooked adequately and still warm when it arrived, but the lack of flavor was appalling. The chicken lo mein tasted like nothing. The sesame chicken tasted only like peanut oil. Somehow the fried rice and steamed rice tasted almost identical. The veggie spring rolls and rangoons were fine. At the end of the day, the food was not worth at all what I paid. Extremely disappointing, expensive and a terrible first impression.

Yelp
This was one of the most disappointing meals I've ever had. It's too bad because the service was fantastic, the restaurant ambience is great and it's clean, but honestly, you go in for food right, so when the food's bad, you're disappointed. We tried three different dishes and they were either over seasoned, underseasoned, or the meat was completely dry.
google avatar

Meechelle F.

Yelp
I placed an online order due to the reviews I read on Yelp. I must say the food is good. I loved the steamed veggies but there were not enough mushrooms. The chicken wings were crispy just like I requested. The crab rangoons were ok at best. They were lacking filling so it was ok. The egg rolls were ok. I'm use to spring tools being this small. For the price that was charged for each item I was disappointed with the egg rolls and rangoons!!!! Placing an order online was quick and easy. They got my order just right with no issues on that part.

Yelp
Excellent service! Very clean and quaint white linen tableware. Staff was very welcoming and fun. Lighting was not dark but intimate as was the seating tables and booths! Very authentic atmosphere. Pleasantly surprised to find a place of this caliber in a strick mall. Several food selections and at generous portions. Although it could be a "family restaurant", I would say it's more well suited for the " mature" part of the family ( no kids running wild or talking loud) Luv this casual yet elegant vibe! Very comfortable! Compliments to the Chef and entire staff!! P.S. the restrooms were very clean also Hope to revisit this place again Very soon!! 5 star restaurant for sure!!!

Yelp
Lunch on Friday with friends. All dishes were fresh, hot and very good. Served with rise, great soup and spring roll. Be sure to ask to be added to rewards program, simple no cards, apps or email flood. Parking a bit of a hassle due to busy DMV office nearby. Service is good.

Yelp
This is the best Chinese restaurant in town! Their food is the best, in my opinion. I especially recommend the Cashew Chicken and Garlic Chicken?

Yelp
Was really looking forward to trying as friends had recommended to me years ago and after the recent win as Best of Colorado Springs was very excited. When you enter a restaurant and the temperature is warm on a warm day that should have been my first clue. The restaurant is nice in appearance. It was a bit weird that the owner and staff had a pile of snow peas on the table and were cleaning them. We decided to try the luncheon specials and ordered two beers. The beers were definitely on the warm side so not sure if the bar fridge is working or they just restocked it. We tried the sesame chicken and lemon chicken. The sesame chicken was crisp on the outside but the dark meat chicken had some fat and the batter was not entirely cooked through so it was yellow and gummy. The lemon chicken was white meat pounded flat covered in panko and deep fried. Not any flavor even with the lemon sauce so we asked for some hot sauce to make it taste better. The chicken itself was dry and there was zero moisture. The wonton soup was not my wife's favorite either and she didn't finish her egg roll either which is a first. The one positive would be the staff who was friendly and pleasant. We also were seated next to a gentleman who seemed to be having a similar experience and he sent his dish back. The owner was pretty even keeled offering a new plate of his order and throwing in dessert. Next time when I walk in, as my wife pointed out, we should have turned around and walked out! Definitely won't be eating Chinese out for a long while...

E D.

Yelp
A little training in customer service would go a long way here: We ordered delivery; the egg rolls were not delivered. When we called, we were told that they were "...really busy" & sending them would take "...like two hours". We asked for a refund & were told they would get a manager to do so. There was no acknowledgement of sending out an incomplete order nor an apology for the inconvenience - just, "...we are really busy, so..." We were left with a feeling of general dissatisfaction - based solely on that three minute phone call. It may be of value to take time to train employees on how to handle situations to ensure that your customer base feels taken care of, especially when charged for a menu item that was not received. This was a Shangri-la issue, yet, Shangri-La took no responsibility for it. Who wants to deal with that on a Saturday night?

Erica S.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars I would I received nothing but slimy onion and chicken that was completely inedible! I wanted chow mein and fried rice this is horrendous! Thank you Uber eats for giving a refund. Barf!!!

Yelp
Improving taste of the food . , New owners (not Chinese) can't emulate the dish's of the former owners
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
Typical Chinese food. Was pretty good and fresh tasting. Kinda pricy though. We got beef broccoli and sesame shrimp. The shrimp were huge!! Also note - friend rice isn't what you expect it to be. No veggies etc inside. Just pretty plain. Close to home so will probably be our new go to for when the craving hits.

Yelp
We visited this restaurant today to celebrate my birthday. The food was okay and the price was average. We held our wedding dinner here nineteen years ago and remembered that the food was much better. This is our first time back at Shangri La since then and we thought it would be the same but we're a little disappointed. The service was good and ambience was okay. We will try to come back another time to see if we can get a better experience.

John-John S.

Yelp
The Food wasn't bad,The Service Was VERY Friendly The Ambiance was amazing there was nobody there I would definitely come back

Liam G.

Yelp
I've been ordering takeout from here for several years -- I've always enjoyed the high quality food. Tonight though was a new, unwelcome experience. The menu was new -- my favorite, Orange Chicken -- was not on the menu. I ordered boneless ribs and honey chicken instead. Both were very disappointing. The ribs tasted like spam and were served with a mediocre BBQ sauce. The honey chicken was highly breaded and was devoid of any stir fried onions, peppers or other veggies. Very plain. The brown rice was thick and unappetizing. I hope this is a one-off bad experience. I hope they return to their former high quality ways.

Yelp
Salt and pepper squid is absolutely amazing, along with the Singapore noodles! Both in store and by delivery, we've been impressed with Shangri-La, definitely one of the better Chinese spots in town.
google avatar

Brad P.

Yelp
Food was excellent would go back again I had the orange chicken. Plenty of portions, very juicy.

Yelp
I just recently moved to Colorado Springs and with that being said I celebrated Christmas by myself for the first time. My dad and I would always eat Chinese food on Christmas Eve and i was so sad i didn't get to continue that tradition with him this year. So, feeling nostalgic, i decided to order from here after work on Christmas Day. Okay.... So the food was so good! I got the cashew shrimp and added tofu and got extra cream cheese wontons and I was soooooo happy. It really was the best cashew shrimp I've ever had. And the wontons, chefs kiss! The woman who called me that my order was ready was the nicest person. She was extremely sweet in person as well. I FaceTimed my boyfriend later in the evening and told him about Shanghai-La and i told him when he get back to Colorado Springs we have to go eat there because the restaurant look nice and i want to try there drinks (the lychee martini) After i FaceTimed my dad and he said the food looked great and he was so happy i stuck to our tradition even far from home. So now i will have a new tradition with you guys!

Yelp
Ordered online. Did not get the correct order .. general tso's is spicy. It is NOT covered in sweet and sour sauce. Half the Items were missing.. called and first person hung up on us... Called back and asked for a manager.. she argued too. PuPu platter came with the tiniest crab Rangoon, over cooked ribs, and HEINZ 57 sauce for dipping!!! Fried rice came.as just rice. No egg, no veggies.. Missing wonton soup but it was probably canned chicken noodle soup based on the rest. For $165??? Are you kidding? Omg!!! Incomplete and wrong order? HORRENDOUS FOOD! Never ordering again.

Beth J.

Yelp
Not as flavorful as in the past. Smaller portions. Attention to details by waiter was good.
google avatar

Tim H.

Yelp
None better in COS. I always make it a dinner combo and get the soup and pu-pu. Very clean and friendly.

Marie S.

Yelp
Who are you people who are giving this place such high ratings? I visited twice because of the ratings. I've given this place two chances with a variety of foods and none of them were great. The dishes labeled spicey were not. The garlic sauce had so little garlic I didn't taste it, and the beef dish had so little beef it should have been labeled vegetables with beef. If you are not native to Colorado, I don't believe you will be pleased with the food. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice... .

John S.

Yelp
Real Peking Duck - need to call in advance. Large portion - plenty for 4 people. Only true Peking Duck I have found in Colorado Springs. You get three courses - carver duck, duck soup from the bones and lastly a stir fry. PD and a beer is all you need!
google avatar

Brian A.

Yelp
The restaurant is located in a strip mall with lots of parking, a nice ambiance inside and a friendly stuff. That's all the good stuff about this place. The food lacked in quality and we couldn't finish our meals. I had the General Tso's Chicken and the chicken was bits and pieces - of low quality meat. There was no white meat and some of it was chewy. The fried rice was dry and also lacked flavor.
google avatar

Brandy F.

Yelp
There were small chicken bones in both the General Tao's and Sesame Chicken that I got for lunch. Very disappointing and disturbing since I nearly chocked on one and the other made me hurt my tooth. I won't be back.
google avatar

Elizabeth T.

Yelp
We just moved here from CA and are trying out different places. We were disappointed with our order. It was not flavorful, the chicken was very dry and our food was cold and soggy Wontons. I had high hopes because of reviews but was let down. We may visit again and dine in to see how that experience is but we feel we wasted money on our first time experience.

Brock F.

Yelp
Lunch menu has multiple options, reasonable prices and attentive service. A combination including soup and egg roll in addition to fried rice and choice of main item. Great business lunch or a time with spouse!

Dominique J.

Yelp
I got the Mongolian beef which was alright. The fried dumplings weren't great. My husband called the fried rice and sesame chicken disgusting.
google avatar

Anthea O.

Yelp
food was elite! even the tea was so good. the service: excellent. they're v sweet and attentive. i think this is my new favorite chinese restaurant in the springs.

Christine G.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious, fairly priced and truly THE BEST customer service we've ever had. Staff was so gracious . We were visiting for the weekend and our special-needs baby made the biggest mess ever... they were all so very kind. I cannot tell you what a wonderful experience we had. Definitely eat here!!! So worth it. If I lived in Col. Springs this would be a weekly go-to!
google avatar

Heres H.

Yelp
We really enjoy eating here. Our meals have always been made well and taste delicious. We order different things often, and have been pleased with everything we have tried. We always seem to get the kindest wait staff, too. We don't eat out often, but this is one place we always enjoy going!
google avatar

Aracely S.

Yelp
Platos deliciosos preparados como debe de ser con calidad, sabor, rapidez y abundancia Totalmente recomendado

Anna R.

Yelp
The soup was Luke warm hot sour was too thick. I ordered happy family. The portions are definitely small for the price compare to the other Chinese restaurants in town . The service was good.
google avatar

Amanda V.

Yelp
I got the orange chicken, it was delicious, and the service was great. The food was great, and it's right by my house. I will definitely be eating here again.
google avatar

Kimberlee B.

Yelp
Here from Illinois and we stumbled upon this place. I haven't been to a restaurant with such amazing service and food!! The decor is dated but everything else made up for it!!!
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
The hostess was pleasant and went out of her way to accommodate us. I was with a group of business colleagues - this is their favorite hangout., so much so that the owner knows them by name. They made diet accommodations without a fling. The food was great, service, beyond great. Loved the entire experience. Go here instead of that big chain - food is much fresher, If you come for dinner and would like a cocktail, they have a great selection of spirts and wine. Highly recommend...AND you are supporting a locally owned business and not a chain.

Yelp
Phenomenal. Elegant. Delicious. We've gone back 4 times in the past month. It's quiet enough to carry on a nice conversation. Table and booths are generously spread apart, much more than the required 6 feet. For evening meal, they have linen table clothes, linen napkins at lunch and dinner. I suggest at dinner, you order the full dinner with soup (Egg Drop is wonderful) and appetizers: one each of egg roll, fried wonton and large, meaty, easy-to-eat, bone-in chicken wing. I always get vegetable lo mein, which is chocked full of numerous veggies, tasty sauce. Husband always tries something different, and always has trouble deciding what to get, because he's loved everything he's ordered. You can vary the spiciness of your entree. This has quickly become our new favorite spot!!

Ashley M.

Yelp
Exceptional customer service! Upon receiving an incorrect order, Tammy sincerely apologized and offered to have the correct order delivered to us. Shangri-La will continue to be our favorite restaurant.

Lucy B.

Yelp
I have been to the Shangrila several times and they always have great food and drinks. The service is outstanding and they always check to see if there's anything else they can bring to you. The restaurant is very clean and the restaurant is great and they are also very friendly
google avatar

Robyn G.

Yelp
Wow! This is the best Chinese food here in North Colorado Springs!!! General Tso's chicken at medium heat was delicious - I really enjoyed the added stir fried veggies. So good! Come and try this secret sauce.
google avatar

Malik C.

Yelp
I have to say this place was really amazing! OMG! Where do I begin? The hostess and waiter were so pleasant and the restaurant had a very nice ambiance to it. It was spacious and not too many people inside at all. Everyone was wearing masks and the food was delicious. I definitely got my money worth coming here and the reviews left by others help encouraged me. The egg drop soup was simply amazing, I usually pass on soups at places like this but it was so good I asked for more. Bourbon chicken - very tender and juicy, had the right amount of sauce on it and the broccoli wasn't over cooked or too raw. The chicken egg roll, chicken wing and soup came with my dinner with a $2 upcharge. So you really can't beat that Crab Rangoons- crispy on the outside and filled of goodness on the inside. Very tasty Will be coming back again.
google avatar

Jill F.

Yelp
My first visit and I tried the chicken chow mein. The ingredients were fresh and flavorful, moist chicken, and tasty fried rice. The portion was the right size for lunch. $9 with tax. Served with really good hot and sour soup and a small eggroll. Instead of the skinny crispy noodles that typically come with chow mein, they give you fried wontons. Almost like the Chinese food version of chips, really. On a Sunday afternoon at lunchtime the restaurant was full and hoppin'. A departure from your typical Chinese takeout place. Very nice decor. Not too loud. Friendly staff. My friend was not as happy with her Kung Pao chicken. She said the carrots and green peppers were really hard and under cooked. She ended up leaving a huge pile of all the vegetables on her plate, though she thought the chicken was tender. I would happily go back and try some other things, I'm not sure that my friend felt the same.
google avatar

Pegan S.

Yelp
I dont get it. The service was most friendly and efficient, but the food was mediocre.

Mike And Cary S.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Springs! This is our goto spot when visiting family in the area.
google avatar

Jessyka T.

Yelp
Love the staff here. Always greeted with a smile and it feels like family. They have been around for 17 years. They recently revamped the menu.. which I enjoy the food more so. My favorite here is the Duck. This dish needs to be pre ordered as it takes a while to make. The skin is crispy and delicious and sooooo flavorful. I know this is random but I also LOVE their fried chicken wings. I don't eat a lot of fried foods. But these wings are well seasoned and fried to perfection. Not at all greasy.. just perfectly crunchy and delicious. They made me feel safe with their social distancing protocols. During this pandemic, it's reassuring to know that business owners are looking out for their clients safety and well being. They deliver which is awesome! Because sometimes you just want to stay home. They agave a full bar and they do offer adult beverages delivered as well. This is my new favorite Chinese restaurant.

Elaine H.

Yelp
We have been searching for a good Chinese restaurant since moving to Colorado in June's 2021. We just found Shangri-La! The Bourbon Chicken and Teryaki Chicken we're both outstanding - tender, juicy - and the sauces were perfect. The rices whether white or fried tasted perfect. We can't say enough about our new favorite Chinese restaurant. We will be back

L L.

Yelp
Just okay. Hot and sour soup was good, the rest of our meal was mediocre at best. The sauces lacked flavor and the vegetables were overcooked.

Virgilio F.

Yelp
Before you pay check with tip, check the receipt for service charge of 20%, it happened to us.
google avatar

Joni I.

Yelp
My husband and I just ate here. We found out the owners sold and retired in July 2020. Doug and Ilene will surely be missed. The food is NOT the same, the quality and freshness is no more, very disappointing. We will not return.
google avatar

Desi D.

Yelp
We ordered the pork fried rice with extra pork. Well I don't think there was extra pork but the main issue was we asked for mild. I personally like hot stuff and don't notice when things are hot, but my husband can't tolerate it. I took one bite of the fried rice and my mouth was on fire. Of course my husband couldn't even eat it and it was really hot. Kind of a waste of money and makes me wonder if we got the wrong friend rice.
