20 Best East Bay Vegan Restaurants | Eater SF

"Nestled on an unassuming street corner in the Longfellow neighborhood, homely Shangri-La is easy to miss. Wise up, though, because the dynamic, ever-changing menu offers unabashed and unapologetic macrobiotic vegan fare — no “this burger tastes the same with black beans and tofu” dishes here. There’s also a Temescal location at 4905 Telegraph Avenue." - Eater Staff

This place is sooooo good. I am not even vegan and I love it. I enjoy that there is just one set served and you just choose one of the two sizes. Whenever I am in the area, I go. Great vibes too, it is Tibetan and I feel the peaceful vibe is in the food too.

Deanalís Arocho Resto

Google
So delicious! I got the large dinner and ate every bite. Everything was seasoned perfectly. This place is simple; you choose if you want a medium or large sized meal, and other than that, you’re signing up for whatever tasty combo they’re offering that day.

Google
This charming, quiet place is heaven. My husband, omnjomnivore, and I, forced to eat dairy and gluten free, were both incredibly happy with the high quality, fresh food we received on top of very nice and respectful service. There’s one meal, you choose the size of your portion. I cannot stress enough how amazing the food was. Vegetables, beans and rice cooked and seasoned to perfection. Collard greens like I’ve never had them before: juicy, tender but with a wonderful bite, deliciously seasoned and clearly very fresh. The soup was amazing, too. Fragrant, perfect texture and the right amount of it, too. We are so grateful for this meal. Thank you so much!!

Google
Amazing food and service! I highly suggest getting the full size for lunch. I love to try many different things when I eat, so this was the perfect menu for that. The dish allows you to try 6 things on the menu and each is a hefty portion. I didn’t think I was that hungry but the food was too delicious to stop eating. 😋 The environment is serene and the patio was a lovely spot to enjoy my meal. I will definitely be returning and recommending this restaurant to all in the Bay.

Google
Really lovely vegan spot. Came here for lunch, perfect breeze, beautiful weather, got to enjoy the sun but also stayed in the shade. Lots of birds sounds. You pick either the moderate for $13 or full lunch for $15 and can add on kombucha or pies. We got the moderate, which were plenty of food. The flavors are rich and full bodied. Also would be a nice patio to take dogs to and enjoy a nice conversation with someone.

Google
I didn't want to drive home in traffic, so luckily I found ShangriLa restaurant nearby. Away from the busy highway, I settled into a refreshing vine-covered patio on a quiet city street, with easy parking. Even though this is a no frills restaurant, I gave it 5 stars for Atmosphere because it feels as though there is an emphasis on serving up serenity & calm with every meal...like being warmly welcomed into someone's humble home. Service is immediate: order inside then sit & food is brought quickly. I ordered an all in one meal with nice portions of 5 different dishes, including a delicious soup for under $20. I love leaving with that satisfied, happy tummy feeling afterwards! 😋 Happy that they're thoughtful enough to have compostable take out boxes for tomorrow's leftovers. Can't wait to go back & see what's next on their rotating menu. I can always use another order of calm in my life.

Google
Love this place and make an effort to eat here whenever I'm in town. The nutritious food is very affordable, friendly service, so delicious, healthy and my body notices the difference whenever I eat here. I'm by no means vegetarian, but so enjoy the food here and hope more will give it a chance. They have a fixed price vegan meal in two sizes (moderate or full portion), that changes daily. One of my favorite restaurants in the East Bay!

Google
Okay, I think I had very high expectations, so maybe that's why it was not a 5 star experience? Hmm, no, not that. I didn't mind the hole in the wall minimalist place at all, I was not expecting anything pretentious. However, I Was expecting better food. No, it's not bland, just ...meh. Soup was okay when hot, but later on I found it to betoo salty. Overall nothing out of this world, I would call it decent for a cantina. Please keep in mind that they don't allow you to dine in if you arrive at 7.30 pm or after (not my case, but i saw this). I would not return.

Yelp
Exceptionally high quality vegan and organic food cooked by Tibetan Buddhists. I have been coming to this place for over a decade and it never fails to satisfy me with the variety and healthfulness of the food made with love and compassion for all beings. Yes, it's that good!

Yelp
What a lovely spot. I came here for lunch, had pea soup with the medium plate - they don't have an a-la-crate menu but a fixed one that changes a few times a day. The food was simple but very good, I enjoyed it. The soup was a bit salty for my taste and I'm not a fan of vinegar on salad (personal preference), but the cooked veggies with rice were delicious. It felt like the food was made with love. There's something about a place like this that feels good, like a home-cooked meal, for that reason I'll happily be back when I'm in that area! The server shared that the chef had Tibetan background but trained in Japanese cuisine. Overall a great experience, glad there are places around that feel like soul food. Also, they use organic ingredients

Yelp
Amazing! The person who took our order was SO nice! The food! Every item had incredible flavor and the salad dressing was to die for. I planned to go here for months it's only two miles away from me on my way to work! I will def have to stop in more often! Just amazing and a great amount of food! Cute little place and outdoor eating also. It's spacious. I love it I will be back!

Yelp
Service was good. A friendly man took our order. The place was pretty dead at noon. Soup was hot, but very salty. I'm guessing maybe because they cook in big batches, but don't always sell it quickly, so they sell it over a couple or few days and it just gets super salty after reheating it daily. Anyway, the main courses were alright. The squash and beans were really salty. The potatoes (3 pieces) were cooked perfectly and seasoned. The rice was very mushy that we couldn't finish it. It's pretty pricey for a plate of veggies - almost $20 for the full plate. I've had plenty of vegan meals at temples or vegan restaurants and this one is probably at the bottom for me. I wish them well!

Yelp
I will write a 5 star review every time I eat here. It's that good. Been coming here since 2013, and never get tired of it. The food is simple, you just choose regular or large essentially. Everything is vegan, non gmo no additives and super healthy. The items change daily, and are always good. In 2013 I ate here for 2 1/2 weeks straight (weekdays when I worked) and never got tired of it. Hands down my favorite vegan restaurant. It's run by the Buddhist temple as I understand and it's super quiet and the energy is great. Everyone is super nice Ps the deserts they have (limited quantities) are all delish

Yelp
American-facing Tibetan run restaurant serving fixed menu macrobiotic faire. Somewhat bland, nutritionally, balanced meals. Great for when your body needs to be nourished and re balanced.

Yelp
We walked in at 11am to a warm smile I was pretty full right after the green split pea soup. My favorite part was the salad with basil lemon agave dressing, then the adzuki beans, collard greens with shiitake mushroom onion sauce and then the cabbage/rice. It's a warm environment with a simple daily menu --you can choose full or moderate as the two sizes. As my friend said, " In an era of incessant faux meat, Shangrila stands out with its whole plant based ingredients, simplicity, and space of tranquility." I gave it a 4 because I prefer some crunch in my food and a little less wet, but I can see why some vegan friends love it too.
google avatar

Sunny O.

Yelp
I wish everyone can cook like them. My favorites are the soup! hands down, no one can make it like they can. Once you have their soup, you will throw away all your nasty Campbell soups away!
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful organic meal. It has similar offerings to the one on San Pablo so I imagine they're related somehow. No sugar (agave in the pie), I haven't seen any wheat/gluten or dairy. It's a relief to not need to make decisions except for the size of my plate and if I want pie or not. Though I saw I could order a single item for $6. Having the free light caffeine tea or to pay for a flavored kombucha is also offered. The atmosphere is clean, peaceful and quiet except for traffic outside. I wish they had a bit of gentle music or chanting playing. But a great respite from noisy places with overly detailed menus. And I always enjoy having the Dalai Lama overseeing a room.

Yelp
The food was very good. They only have one meal option available each day. You can choose to have it in a large or medium portion. I was a little disappointed because I was craving broccoli. It's the first time I had seen this type of menu at a sit down restaurant but the food they had was very good. Friendly service and plenty of seats. (Please be careful about hiding all the valuables in your car if you park in the area. The car we used to get there was broken into and items were stolen.)

Yelp
Rude and inconsiderate. Was waiting on my moderate 20minutes and he served the couple that came in 15 mins after me. All of the dishes are the same. After 20 minutes of standing there I told him that I guess I should go and he said "yeah yeah go go " He struggles with multitasking.

Yelp
So reliable! The most healthy restaurant I have ever been to. A weekly staple for me. Amazing raw vegan pies for dessert.. free twig tea on tap! Outdoor seating. No need for cumbersome choice making... you can order simple, medium or large meal. That's it!

M. N.

Yelp
Had a lovely meal here with a small group of folks. The food was wholesome and tasty. The prix fixe meal (you choose a medium or a larger version) included soup, rice, flavored beans, field greens salad with a nice dressing, steamed collards with tasty sauce, and cooked mixed veggies. Everyone seemed pleased and there were appreciative comments. They were graciously flexible about accommodating a member of our group who couldn't have two of the items that were part of the regular prix fixe meal. Today their credit card processing machine wasn't working so it was cash or some of the other payment methods (I forget which; Venmo? Zelle?). Defiitely a meal I feel good about.

Yelp
For vegan food that is organically sourced Shanghai-La Vegan is the place to go. Their hours are a bit odd, so make sure you call or check before going. As a low key Mothers Day dinner, we decided to do take out & their menu of the day was Red Bean soup, curried garbanzo beans, arugula salad with a sweet vinaigrette dressing. Collard greens with a creamy sauce & butternut, zucchini squash, plus brown rice. Everything was flavorful except the brown rice, it was a bit over watered & lacked flavor. The star of the show was the garbanzo beans bc it had the most flavor. It was a different to be able to try vegan food, but I don't think I could ever be a vegan & be content.

Yelp
Consistent, filling vegan food with tea included. Order the portion size you'd like and enjoy! The atmosphere is always peaceful so it's a nice way to take a break from loud noise and social interactions.
google avatar

Ben G.

Yelp
The food is amazing. No frills cafeteria style, simple menu, just order moderate portions full size. Highly recommend even for non vegan like me.

Carol R.

Yelp
Food is so tasty and it's actually good for your health. The servers are friendly and it's a peaceful place to pop in on your own or a nice place to gather with friends.
google avatar

Yelp
I love a good vegan plate! No guilt in finishing the whole thing too lol I tried the moderate yesterday. It's like a vegan Thanksgiving plate of food. Lots of different flavors and textures. My fav was the leafy greens with vegan cheese on top. The carrots and potato's with that rice was fire also. I even tried the key lime pie and that was on point. I'm glad I went with this place as opposed to another because this food made me feel good after. Would def come back!

Yelp
Food - 4 (only because I haven't tried everything on the menu) Service - 5 Ambiance - 4 (clean location, mellow decor, smells great inside and really inviting) Order lunch via DoorDash for pickup and liked that the restaurant called to confirm when I would arrive. (I like hot food ) The food is very flavorful, uses plant-based ingredients, tastes fresh and is filling. The portions are sufficient and although i ordered a moderate portion, i was able to split my lunch into 2 days. This might end up in my weekly rotation.

Yelp
First trip back after not being in Berkeley for 18 months and Shangri-La didn't disappoint. Such a simple restaurant model with such exceptional quality and complex flavors. I always feel comfortable ordering a "plate" because it's irrelevant what they're serving any particular day I'm guaranteed to be well pleased and so satisfied. When we have had friends come from other areas of the country to hang out with us when we're in Berkeley, we ensure we take them to Shangri-La or now we order to pickup. If we bring them at the beginning of their time in Berkeley, it's for sure we will be popping back for lunch or dinner at least another time or two before they leave.

Ashley G.

Yelp
I really enjoy every location this restaurant opens. The food is very healthy and stands out among most restaurants in the surrounding areas!
google avatar

Gina M.

Yelp
Great vegan spot. From what I can tell, they only have one option per day that comes in two sizes. They put a good blend of different types of foods, and it tastes good and healthy. Definitely comfort food. Also, the service and environment is friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
Once a big "meat" eater, I now don't have much meat on my own bones. I mean I have always been shy of 140 pounds most of my adult life. Nonetheless, I continue to improve my diet and reduce the amount of red meat in my small, delicate, gluten-sensitive stomach. Surfing Yelp for Vegan or Vegetarian food options, my companion and I found Shangri-La Vegan. To be honest, the menu was simple but the dishes were full, filling, and fulfilling. We shared a full order which included lentils, collard greens, brown rice, and soupy broth (broth-y soup). And no, not like the collard greens ya momma or auntie (pronounced ant-tea) makes. No meat products, so no salt pork or Louisiana Hot Sauce. The food was rather light, so no nap or the itis occurred. If you want something light and right, then come to Shangri-La Vegan where the food is health-conscious and not hype-driven like some other "hip" boutique eateries in the Bay Area. Momma, if you are reading this, just know your Southern-style collard greens will never be forgotten. Although my heart is still with you, my stomach has moved on...

Yelp
Too much oil. I love what this place does but way too much oil for a health food spot

Yelp
Hearty food in a no-frills setting. Generous portions. Simple and good. Not much more to say. Recommended if you're looking for a reliable vegan option.

Yelp
I first started going to Shangri-La around 15 years ago. After long hiatus, I returned recently and have been enjoying it. The food is always fresh and tasty, and makes you feel good. I like that there is only one thing on the menu, too. It is a nice break from the crushing weight of consumer decision making.
google avatar

Yelp
Love this place for a great light healthy lunch. Food is always fresh and you can depend on good meal
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent! Simple! Nutritional! Flavor experience! Vegan! Cell food..... This restaurant has been a long time favorite of mine. They always have a pre-fixe menu you just choose the size. Full for bigger appetites and Moderate for regular. Mod is always big enough for me. Meals come with a plate of 4 items and salad and brown short grain rice along with soup. You have unlimited access to the pre made tea and water. They also have vegan desserts made with natural sweetener like agave or maple syrup or something? But not sugar. And yes they're amazing

Yelp
I LOVE It!!! Food is so full of flavor and the mango pie is to die for!!!staff is very friendly.

Yelp
My FAVORITE restaurant in Oakland. I LOVe the tasty colorful delicious food. I always feel satisfied and nourished after these meals. From my experience, this is the only fully organic restaurant in Oakland. The staff has a kind gentle sweet energy. I am so grateful. I Love this restaurant

Yelp
I love all three locations. They vary a little bit but I always feel like I am taking care of myself after eating here. Lovely food and relaxing place to enjoy the moment.
google avatar

Angelin R.

Yelp
My first time here and I was pleasantly surprised. I love vegan fare and I really appreciate the effort that went into my lunch. I started with the garbanzo soup which was flavorful, very light, and perfectly balanced. I then had the full sized lunch. It was more food than I could eat, next time I will order the moderate size. Today's lunch was house greens tossed with a beet vinaigrette, collard greens with a mushroom leek sauce, yellow peas, brown rice, and diakon with green beans. It was delicious and the service was pleasant. I look forward to my next visit when I am in the area.

Yelp
Had to downgrade from two stars to one star due to stomachache and diarrhea after consuming food here. Basically wrote the review while having to sit on the toilet. ****************************************** Such an odd ball. I get it: it's vegan. But that doesn't mean the food has to be bland. They have full or moderate plate so you get to sample a bit of everything. I got the moderate plate which was ok. It has rice, salad, steamed mixed veggies, kale, peas, and whatever that was thrown in there. They try to create the ultimate hippie/hipster peaceful zen dinning experience in a dark rundown building with Dalai Lama's words framed all over the walls. Unfortunately I didn't get the zen feeling dining here. I can see why this place is popular among certain demographics. But I'm not a hippie/hipster and like my food with seasonings so I doubt I'd ever be back.

Rae J.

Yelp
Delicious and nourishing. This place is low key but very special. It takes away the stress of deciding what to order with only one menu option/day with options for sizes.

H N.

Yelp
Great food, I've noticed they do collard greens a lot. The meal usually starts with a soup, you then get some grains (usually brown rice), collard greens with a type of sauce, an order of beans, a spring green salad with homemade dressing (usually citrusy) and some roasted/sauteed root veggies. I was particularly surprised by the dessert- the coconut and chocolate pie are superb, much better than it looks. I also enjoy the light herbal tea. The people working are always so friendly and reading the mantras strewn along the wall reminds me to practice gratitude.
google avatar

Jared S.

Yelp
So yummy! Keeps it simple and healthy. Tried the key lime pie this time and it was soo good.
google avatar

Jeanie N.

Yelp
This place is really good. Super simple/healthy ingredients and they manage to add a lot of flavor to their various veggies! A great place when you still want to eat healthy but don't want to cook. I recommend getting their 'large' portion as it's not that big, and works well for ~2 meals. But to be fair, I've never ordered their small portion, ha! Check out the menu online - it's daily / changes frequently

Julie H.

Yelp
Great for people seeking healthy food Vegan and probably macrobiotic What is with this review process requiring a long review?
google avatar

Zita M.

Yelp
Interesting place. No cell phones allowed in the restaurant. Lots of Buddhist and Dalai Lama quotes on the wall. Prefix menus. Vegan only. Great price. Modest set up. Don't expect comfy chairs and tables - all is minimal. Your chosen meal will be brought out. No alcoholic beverages or popular soft drinks are served. Only hot tea, kombucha, and similars. The restaurant has a vintage school cafeteria feel. Street parking is available.

SD F.

Yelp
We were so happy to find this restaurant! The food was fantastic and a reasonable price. If you're looking for yummy vegan food - we'd highly recommend. We had a little trouble communicating (and had to give up trying to do so via a phone call), but when we came in to order, the food was ready very quickly. It seemed that they have one set full meal, with a soup and a few plant-based dishes (I think it was a lentil miso soup, a kabocha squash with collard greens and two other items. All items were delicious and wonderfully spiced (mild but very flavorful). We were very happy we found Shangri-La. There were a few small tables out on the patio (which seemed peaceful) and I don't believe there were any indoors - but we were looking to eat at home, so this was perfect.

Yelp
This is a review I've been meaning to write for years. I wish there was an option for extra golden stars especially for businesses like this. I've been eating here for 23 plus years! It could very well be more but I can track this by memories of eating here with my son when he was a baby after our visits our morning outings. In 23 plus years of eating here and meals eaten well into the hundreds- I've only had amazing experiences. The food is consistently incredible in flavor and nourishment. The food is macrobiotic and vegan but I assure you that you DO NOT have to be a vegan or even into healthy food to appreciate what these meals bring. One perk is that you don't have to make a decision as there's only one offering a day. This includes a cup of miso lentil soup and a well rounded plate of a grain, a seasonal roasted/sautéed vegetable, a scoop of collard greens, a green salad, and a legume. The salad and greens are topped with some amazing dressing or sauce. Their simple sauces are heavenly despite the strict dedication to certain ingredients. No sugars are used and they avoid certain types of oils. I, in all honesty, am not familiar with the specifics of macrobiotic but they make it to be oozing with flavor. If you eat in there's also a lovely hot self-serve tea. This is my go to spot when I'm really feeling like my body needs a nutritional charge. If I feel run down, if I've just returned from a multi day music festival, or if I'm just hungry this is my place. I have a friend that has always looked at my vegan food choices and healthy eating with disgust. Yes there are those people. She got turned onto this place by someone else and can't stop ordering from here. I remember the tickle inside when she eagerly told me about Shangri-La and how I would probably like it "The food of the heavens, you have finally discovered" whispered my inner Yoda. I have an all time favorite story about this place that must be a part of this review. Years ago I stopped in for lunch. It was nearing rent time and I had a few hundred dollars of my cash earnings on me that day. A few hours later I noticed I was missing an entire $100 bill. Thinking back I figured out that I must've dropped it at Shangri-La. I knew very well that the bill did not have my name on it and it's a finders Keepers losers weepers kind of deal. It was important enough for me to at least go look just in case the .0001% chance occurred and I found it. I went in and told the young man that I had eaten there earlier and lost $100. To my enormous shock he replied that he had found it and saved it for me!!! I'm still in disbelief. There truly aren't many humans that would pick up a lost hundred dollar bill and save it for return. It's almost fair game as it's cash and really doesn't have anyones name on it. From this day on I've loved them even more and tell this story along with my recommendation often. I'm so happy to see that they've recently opened 2 new locations. They deserve success so very much. Please try this place even if you hate healthy food as it will nourish your body and your soul.

Sarah K.

Yelp
I thought the food was great! I had a really great slice of key lime pie with it. It's really healthy food for a decent price as well. The only downside was that they seem to only have one option, period. They have a regular and a large, but there's only one food item on the menu. Maybe I came in on a slow day? It's definitely worth a try.
google avatar

Michelle K.

Yelp
Shangri-la. Good, warm, comfort vegan food. I believe the menu changes daily, but they have a formula so you have a general idea of what to expect. There are really only three options: simple, moderate, and full. The simple is close to the other two options sans sauce. I have never tried this option and likely never will. The difference between the latter two is sizing. It comes with a delicious soup that some may call a bit bland. You can jazz it up with some of the spices at the table. Sesame seeds, tumeric, hot sauce, S&P are a few (if not all) of the options. Kombucha is overpriced and nothing special. I've tried the chocolate coconut cream pie which was VERY rich. Delicious for the first few bites, but had to share. The chocolate chip cookie was very disappointing. It reminded me of an asian shortbread, not very sweet. Even though I wasn't really a fan of the desserts, I highly recommend Shangri-La Vegan for a meal that tastes like it was made out of real (yes, real!) whole vegetables. Street parking, have never found it hard to find, but then again I've only come for lunch on a weekday. No cell phones and it's a quiet, peaceful restaurant. They prefer cash :)

Yelp
This is my go to spot, clean fresh healthy food and the sweetest people. Walking distance from Jacqueline's Spa. I Love the way I feel after eating at Shangri-La Vegan
google avatar

Christina G.

Yelp
Very no frills, affordable vegan food. If I could eat here everyday, being vegan would be easy. They somehow made a creamy mushroom sauce to put over steamed collards that made the dish taste so meaty and hearty. The key lime pie was rich and tart and textural. It's no substitute for traditional pie but it's pretty darn good for vegan and no added sugar. All the food is so flavorful and service is fast.

Yelp
We ordered food for delivery and I was blown away by my meal ! It arrived hot and it was the perfect nourishing dinner for a cold night. The portion of the moderate size was perfect/large IMO and I was able to eat a lot of food but still feel great after. The flavors were earthy and comforting. I will be ordering again and telling all of my vegan friends !

Yelp
If you're looking for a simple place that provides a simple food(something light and spiritual), then this is the place to go. If you have been to one of those zen meditation centers, the food served here is something like that. So It is definitely not one of those fancy dine-in restaurants. The unique thing about this restaurant is that "only one item in the menu". You can order medium or full size of that one item. Every day is going to be a different item. On The day we visited, this was the menu. Lentil soup - simple. Brown basmati rice. -- simple Kidney beans -- simple Squash cooked -- cooked lightly 2Salads. -- Tea Medium Quantity was sufficient for dinner for 1 person. Everything was fresh. Instead of providing 2 vegetable salads, they could have provided 1 vegetable salad and 1 fruit salad which would have made everything colorful. They still use minute amounts of onion and garlic. Hope they will remove onion and garlic all together. This type of meals are good for weekdays where you would want to eat something light at an affordable price.

Zayn M.

Yelp
I love Shangri-La! I've brought so many friends here too. I didn't think it would be so good based on the pictures since it looked too "healthy tasting" but I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious it is. We come here often now and feel so nourished after. The staff at the Linden location are really kind but not a fan of the Telegraph location's management. Try this place!!
