Shangrila Himalayan Kitchen - Review - South Lake Tahoe - Tahoe - The Infatuation

"For a last-minute group dinner or big takeout haul after closing out Heavenly, all roads lead to Shangrila Himalayan Kitchen. The Nepali and Indian restaurant is a walk-in-friendly spot with an arsenal of loaded momo plates and hearty curries. Plus, they have tons of vegetarian and seafood options, in case your group has a laundry list of dietary restrictions—or if it’s time to switch things up from the many pizzas and burgers in town." - Julia Chen

Google
Shangrila Himalayan Kitchen offers great-tasting food with a cozy and comfortable seating area, making it a tempting spot for Himalayan cuisine lovers. HOWEVER , the service was extremely disappointing—despite being told the wait would be 40 minutes, our food arrived after over 1.5 hours, with just two waiters struggling to manage the entire restaurant. Since it’s prepaid, you’re stuck waiting with no options. !! ALERT !! If you’re on vacation or have plans afterward, this place can ruin your schedule—it’s simply not worth the time. Strongly not recommended unless you have hours to spare.

Google
INCREDIBLE! The biggest thank you to Tej - we hosted a dinner here for our wedding weekend and he was so gracious and went above and beyond to make it the most special night. The food was delicious and the atmosphere so cozy. We love coming here after a day of hiking and playing in Tahoe and had the best time sharing it with all our favorite people. Thank you Tej and staff!!

Google
We had dinner at this Nepalese restaurant while we were at Lake Tahoe. We ordered Veggie Momos, Veg Biryani, Matar Paneer and Butter Naan. Everything was flavorful and delicious. The Momos were made fresh and served steaming hot. The staff were friendly.

Google
Wow this place is a gem! Everything was super fresh and delicious. The dumplings were some of the best I’ve ever had. Can’t wait to come back

Google
Absolutely phenomenal 10/10. Some of the best dishes I’ve ever had with amazing flavors. Super quick and friendly service too! I wish we had this in Arizona!

Google
If lake Tahoe is heaven, this food is heavenly! I have never in my life tasted such soft and delicious garlic naans in my life. Veg curry and chow soup was yum. Kids also enjoyed matar paneer!!

Google
Food was very delicious. They were short staffed and only less seats are available in the restaurant. But the food was amazing… totally worth the wait!!

Google
Himalayan Restaurant is a delight! We ordered momos, saag paneer, and naan all were delicious and full of flavor. A little pricey, but definitely worth it for the tasty, authentic dishes.

Yelp
Inviting and cozy dinning. The service was excellent, the menu outstanding. The choices were bountiful with a layered complexity of spices. We ordered lamb, chicken, pander, biryann rice dishes and MoMos, a delicious dumpling with tasty sauces. Can't recommend them highly enough! If you love spicy dishes with aromatic spices, this is a must try!

Yelp
Shangrila Himalayan is really a hidden gem in Tahoe. It's pretty low-key and easy to miss, but I'm glad my wife and I stumbled upon it! Super relaxed vibe inside -- nothing fancy but very cozy and welcoming. We ordered the butter chicken, lamb tikka masala, garlic naan, and jasmine rice. My wife loved the butter chicken -- super creamy with really good flavor. I went for the lamb tikka masala and it was amazing! Super unique, a little gamey in a good way, and packed with flavor! It was probably my favorite indian dish ever ordered. The garlic naan was perfect for scooping everything up and balancing out all the flavors and the jasmine rice tied it all together. If you're in Tahoe and want some really solid Indian/Himalayan food in a chill spot, definitely check this place out. We'll for sure be back even if it means walking 45 minutes out in the cold again!

Yelp
Bold and unforgettable Indian cuisine in beautiful Lake Tahoe. Possibly the best chicken tikka masala I've ever had. Tender chicken in a rich, spice-laced sauce that felt like pure comfort. Paired with fragrant basmati rice and golden garlic naan, crisp at the edges and soft inside, each bite was pure bliss. We stumbled in during a rare summer storm that turned snow. With a 45 min wait, no one minded. Everyone was seeking shelter and warmth. The cozy interior, bright and welcoming, matched the food's vibrancy. Tucked in a residential area with free street parking, this spot doesn't offer lunch specials and prices are steep, with each item available only à la carte. But the quality more than justifies it. I'll gladly return and hopefully be able to enjoy their outdoor seating on a warmer day.

Yelp
This is a solid place to grab a meal when in Lake Tahoe! It's conveniently located near Heavenly ski resort and street parking was easy. I came here on a weekend evening and it was easy to get a table. We enjoyed a hearty, delicious meal after a fun day in the snow. Portion size was quite large, so we had leftovers the next day. They have a nice variety of curries and vegetarian options. The curry we ordered was hot, spicy, and flavorful. I definitely recommend the momos! Service was attentive and efficient. I'll definitely be back next winter. :)

Yelp
Amazing Nepali/Indian place in South Lake Tahoe with lovely ambience and great service! Visited this first time and tried the chicken kadai and yellow dal tadka with butter tandoori roti and rice. Kids also enjoyed eating here and surely will visit again! Highly recommended!!

Yelp
Best Indian food I've ever had!! So amazing! I can taste the flavors and spices... so wonderful!!

Yelp
It currently says here on Yelp (and Shangrila's website) that they are open on Mondays for takeout, but that is not the case. They are closed on Mondays, as the sign on their door states. But I phoned the number on the door just in case. The man who answered (whom I might have waken up; sorry!) verified they are closed on Mondays. Also according to the sign, their hours are 11:30am - 8:30pm every day but Monday, which is also different from the hours shown here. But as I didn't ask about that, I can't guarantee it.

Yelp
I've gotten take out from here during SIP, but this was the first time I went to dine inside. Service is quick and easy. They use Toast Tab so you can either order and pay via the app, or you can ask for a physical menu and order from the server. Food came out really quick. To my surprise, one order of Momos is pretty filling. The chicken was great. I'd be happy to try the vegetarian next time. The red paste is tasty and spicy. Highly recommend getting this.

Yelp
There was only one other table when we arrived and maybe 3 tables when we left. I was a bit surprised because the sushi place next door was hopping. The food here is tasty and not healthy at all. My friend had warned me that food would take a while to come out but it wasn't too bad perhaps because there weren't many people there. Prices are higher than I'd expect, but portion sizes are generous and we definitely took food home. Service was standard. We ordered the chicken momo, saag paneer, lamb korma, naan, and saffron rice. We ordered medium spice for everything and probably could have gotten it a spicier. Chicken momo was tasty but the skin was perhaps a bit overcooked because it was coming apart. Saag paneer tasted quite buttery and creamy and could have used more paneer. The sauce on the lamb korma was delicious but I wished there was more "stuff" in the korma. The naan was probably my favorite of everything that came out.

Yelp
Visited on Labor Day weekend. It was a good walk here from state line area, so we'd worked up an appetite. There was some confusion over how long it would take but then they seated us right away and we enjoyed a big beer. I was exhausted and forgot to take pictures, but we had two kinds of curry - butter chicken and lamb saag - and naan and it was all great. I eat a lot of Indian food, and this Himalayan cuisine had more subtle and interesting flavors - it wasn't just your usual tikka masala. Staff was friendly, lots of nice outdoor seating.
google avatar

Vince L.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time and they had items on the menu that I've never heard of, but everything we ordered was really good specially the garlic naan! Highly recommend it!

Yelp
YUMMO!! What a great spot! This is the one of the first restaurant as we got into town...the bar is set! Luckily, there was no wait and our food didn't take too long. But honestly, I think good food takes time to prepare so I would have been ok to wait. The portion was very large. We had lamb karahi & saag paneer with rice & butter naan. Meal was good for two with leftovers for dinner. Highly recommend if you are looking for flavor!
google avatar

Yelp
I almost gave one star, bc you REALLY got to want to eat here. Props to the waiter for telling everyone they have a table, but the food would be an HOUR. So many people just left. My advice just smile. Take the table. Your food will be out soon after you order. Don't tell anyone. We had the chicken masala- coconut forward and quite thick. Momos were soso. Biryani and Naan were good.

Yelp
Decided to try SHANGRILA Himalayan kitchen for Indian food. I was not disappointed as the food was excellent. My wife and I shared Lamb Tikka Masala, butter Nan bread and popadoms. There was plenty of food for both of us to share and food left over. The quality of the food was first class and the Nan Bread seemed to have been freshly baked. I would highly recommend the restaurant.
google avatar

Jim M.

Yelp
The food is great. We always come back here when in town! The service is also good, and the restaurant is welcoming.

Yelp
Had some miscommunication when ordering samosas over the phone because I didn't know there were 2 pieces in 1 order. I pointed the incorrect order to the guy working at the front today (8/4) evening when I received the check. I guess he didn't know I could understand what he was saying as he proceeded to call me "pagal" under his breath, which means "crazy" in Hindi. I suggest training the staff here on customer service skills and hiring some respectful people. What an interesting way to talk to a paying customer!

Yelp
Went on Monday...take out only...please notate this on your website..we were not the only ones there..... Went back on Tuesday..went smoothly..got the chicken tikka masala, butter naan, and rice. Also got a side order of the chutney and it was great! Portion size very generous, but for 20 dollars it probably should be. We sat inside and it got busier as the night went on. We really liked the food and will be back, might order spicier than 6 next time for it still was not very spicy.

Yelp
We waited an hour to get our food. Although the restaurant wasn't too busy, I'm surprised at how long it took! It's curry and dumplings?! How long does it actually take to cook or heat up? The chicken momo was yummy, soft and smooth wrap and the chicken inside was tender. The butter chicken was standard along with the butter nan. The chow chow noodle was just blah. I'd only order it after a long day of snowboarding. It's a hearty noodle with frozen veggies. Nothing special but perfect for a cold winter day. I was surprised that the noodles were just packaged ramen noodles. Def odd. Overall, would come back to support mom and pop shop. But please for the love of god, hire more qualified staff! They had this kid running around serving, playing with his phone and eating packets of dry ramen. Can it get any more family run?

Yelp
Yummy food in the Tahoe area. The food takes forever so call and order ahead will be easier whether to dine in or take out.

Yelp
When I tell you I crave this place, I mean it! This place in South Lake Tahoe is an absolute gem!! Note when you come in, it will take a while to prep the greatness of what will be served but that shouldn't knock anything into the negative on your experience. When it comes to great food like this, I would rather it be so than it be on the burner just staying warm. Cheese naan and butter naan are a must, if you haven't had it, just do it! They ask you the spice level you want on each of the entrees. The vegetable samosa is great as an appetizer. Rice is served a la carte as you wish. Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken are my two go to favs but really you cannot go wrong here. Highly, highly, highly worth the drive from Reno even just to eat!

Yelp
Food: 3.5/5 Service: 4/5 Price: 3/5 Atmosphere: 4/5 TL;DR: We had an early dinner & sat outside since it was a nice day out. The staff is pretty nice and quite fast (although the place just opened & wasn't super busy yet). The food was delicious. Overall, I'd give it 3.5 if Yelp could do half-stars -- for Tahoe, decent Nepalese food. Chicken Momos (*4/5*): Pretty big momos and super juicy when you bite into it (beware it might squirt out lol) The chicken had a yummy curry flavor. Butter Chicken (*2.5/5*): The chicken was really tender but there was too much butter in the curry so all you really taste is ghee; still good but the butter was way too overpowering to really enjoy Lamb Korma (*4/5*): This was delicious -- lamb was really tender & curry was very flavorful. Chicken Tadoori (3*/5*): The chicken was really tender & well seasoned, and I loved the onions/veggies that came with it Garlic Naan (*3/5*): Soft, fluffy, & garlicy

Yelp
We went to have lunch at this place because I always check the reviews. This location had almost 5 stars. The customer service can definitely use some improvement and the place needs a remodel. Food was ok, I would give 3 stars for the food. Would I go there again or recommend some one? I wouldn't.

Yelp
Good food, great service. Ambiance was a little dark and noise tends to echo. Prices were reasonable.

Yelp
Best biryani I've tasted in California so far I've been to so many restaurants but the biryani here is very authentic as if it's cooked at home. We ordered Samosa and some other items and they were all on spot Service was very good and the guys are super friendly The place was cozy and clean Super recommended

Yelp
This is such a hidden gem in Tahoe. Stumbled in on a cold weekend night, not too packed. Ordered chicken tikka masala and shrimp curry both medium spice, 2 rice (curries didn't come with rice), and garlic naan. The wait wasn't too bad like what the other reviews said. Everything was absolutely delicious!!! Perfect amount of spice. Would definitely come back next time!
google avatar

Manisha S.

Yelp
Momos were amazing. Never thought that you can get good momos at Lake Tahoe. This hill place vibes match with having momos!!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food! Quick service, best tikka masala I've had in a while. Will definitely be coming back for sure.

Yelp
We arrived in Tahoe and found this place on YELP. So glad we did. We both like Indian-Himalayan food, but the food at ShangriLa is amazing. Such wonderful flavors. We started with the Shangrila Momo. It is 9 pirces of wonderful Napalese dumpling in A spinach wrap. Served with a delicious sauce. Our main dishes were the Shangrila Daal Fry wish is a thick stew dish made with black lentils, red beans etc. So tasty. We also ordered the Veggie Masala..the besr we ever tasted..seriously good. The place is cute, with bright colors and is very clean..immaculate. The staff was very nice and accomodating. We plan to eat there again before leaving Tahoe. This place is a dining must.

Yelp
The food was amazing. The chicken tikka masala was the best chicken Marcella that I had had the leftovers this morning.
google avatar

Yelp
Seriously the best Indian food I've had in Cali! So fresh and amazing flavors. Don't sleep on this place! Tucked a little farther back from the main road. Simple place but you can tell the people here care about the food. Clean and bright vibe. Go here next time ur in south lake!
google avatar

Jenn W.

Yelp
I'm a bit upset with ourselves that we've only recently discovered this gem! We came on a Sunday morning right at opening time. Not pictured are the Himalayan Chai + Vegetable Samosas that we devoured before snapping pics. My husband is Nepali and he highly endorses the authenticity of flavors of everything we ate. I'm just along for the ride but of course, loved the food as well. I could just eat chicken momos as the main dish and would've been highly satisfied. Good/fresh food takes time; ours took 20 minutes. Be patient as it's worth waiting for! They look family-run and we always like to support our people/family/local businesses. We'll see you again (and again)!
google avatar

Becca B.

Yelp
This place has good food with good flavors! It does get very busy with to go orders but they were friendly and upfront with the wait time. We were able to sat right away but warned it would take about an hour for our food due to the amount of orders they had coming in. It ended up being faster than an hour wait and everyone in my group left happy!
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
Delicious food. Great service. It was a nice break from all the American cuisine in south lake.

Yelp
Coffee and samosas were delicious! I only stopped in for coffee but the menu looks so good I had to try them and they did not disappoint. I will definitely be back to try more things from their menu.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I recently took a trip to Lake Tahoe. As a serious foodie, I obviously had to look up the best places to eat before we arrived. One of the places I saw recommended was Shangrila. My girlfriend and I have had Nepali food before, especially momos so we were excited to give this place a shot. The restaurant was exceptionally busy for a weekday night when we went, so we knew immediately that it was going to be good. Since the restaurant was completely full inside, we opted to sit outside. Our waitress warned us that it would likely be at least 45 minutes before we got our food. While we didn't love that, we were glad she was upfront about it and since we had nowhere to go, we were fine with it. The food didn't take 45 minutes to come out. It came out pretty fast. So we were pleasantly surprised. Maybe that was the waitress' gameplan...set our expectations low so that our minds would be blown. Well Ms. Waitress, blow our minds you did! The food was exquisite. Probably one of the best meals we had while we were in Lake Tahoe. We had the chicken momos and lamb korma. It was phenomenal. My girlfriend and I got full and she suggested we box up the leftovers. I said no, this is too delicious, I'm finishing it here. The only thing I didn't like about the meal was I got bit by mosquitos while eating outside. But I would gladly get bit again if it means I get to eat the incredible food at Shangrila. 100% I will visit this restaurant again next time I am in Lake Tahoe.

Yelp
Yummm. This place is absolutely delicious. Service is prompt. I've been back a few times and will continue to frequent.

Yelp
The chicken mono's were unbelievable. I came with a native Nepali who thought this was the most authentic she's had since Nepal

Yelp
Came here for dinner. This place had decent reviews so thought to give it a try. The place had waiting and had fewer servers to help in. The food took lot of time to arrive and had us waiting when we were really hungry and could see people come after us and get food. 4/5 Veg and chicken momo - decent and came really quick. Being a Himalayan cuisine this lived up to the expectations. 3.5/5 Dal tadka - was an average dal recipe. Rice needs to be ordered separately. 3.5/5 Chana masala - the taste of this was similar to the the dal but with chickpeas. 4/5 Tandoori chicken with bones - this was a sizzler and the chicken although looked to be red colored, the taste was decent and the veggies cooked with it were charred to perfection. 2/5 Garlic Naan - very bready doughy to taste and not the usual garlic naan you see in Indian type restaurants. 1/5 Lamb Chow Chow - this was a very disappointing soup with noodles and lamb pieces. The soup had a peculiar taste and noodles weren't tasty at all. We did not end up eating any of this. The overall place is okay and possibly hyped due to lack of such options in the area but then you can give it a try and take this review as a guidance.
google avatar

Kim D.

Yelp
Decided to try this out, based on all the reviews. We tried the butter chicken, garlic naan rice. First of all they use. WAY TOO MUCH butter/ Ghee on everything it's overwhelming. My favorite thing they have is probably the veggie Samosa. The rice taste amazing because they use saffron . And yogurt doesn't come with the meals they charge you extra, which is ridiculous. They also use incense in there to change the smell but it doesn't smell good, try Musk or light scent. Last tip* they do not have any cushion on their chairs, which is uncomfortable ; add this for your costumers!

Hailey C.

Yelp
Just got food poisoning from eating here yesterday (9/14/25). I've eaten tons of Indian food in my life but something set me off big time. Up all night doing you know what coming out of you know where. I had the vegetable samosa, butter chicken, tandoori chicken, rice, and garlic naan. My guess is the chicken. Shame I'm sad I have to throw my leftovers away. :(
google avatar

Arpita S.

Yelp
Excellent food and atmosphere for a great dining experience in Lake Tahoe. We got seated immediately for dinner on a Sunday, and the food was served in around 10 mins from when we ordered. We ordered Chicken Chow Chow, Chicken Curry, chicken momos, tea, garlic bread and everything was so delicious. Staff was really friendly and kid friendly too.
google avatar

Pankti S.

Yelp
We visited this place after a day of water activities and were craving some hot Indian food. We ordered paneer tikka masala, sweet lassi, mango lassi, garlic naan, veg momos, tandoori roti and shangrila special dal and rice. Everything except the momos was great in taste. The naans especially were very soft and smelled fresh. You can avoid the momos the crust was hard and the filling wasn't that tasty either. The only problem I had with this place was the pricing. It is extremely expensive and on top of that they charge a 18% service fee on every order which turned out to be very expensive experience for us. Also, the rice is not served with dal, you have to order it separately. If you're visiting on weekends, there's a farmers market right outside the restaurant and you will not find parking!!

Sathya N.

Yelp
Great food and great service. We came into the restaurant late so the dine in option closed. They took our order for take out. We ordered 2 veg curries (korma, dhal), rice, raitha and naan. We liked all the dishes, they were all very hot and fresh! Highly recommend this place if you are craving hot and fresh food. I would visit again when I visit Lake Tahoe.
google avatar

Anu K.

Yelp
My mother in law makes chicken momos at home so I have high standards. These were ONpoint. The kids wolfed them down in 10 seconds. This place takes a little while to get food out, but I think that's to be expected when food is actually made fresh to order.
google avatar

Rudra P.

Yelp
Food was Amazing. Best Indian restaurant that I have in the last 10 years. We came from LA. I wish we had a restaurant like this in LA. I will come back again before i drive back
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
Has to be one of the best garlic naan and butter chicken I have ever had. Every time I come to Lake Tahoe we always have to come to Shangrila. We went on a Friday night and wasn't packed! Super surprised. If you're reading this review, stop and go eat here or you will regret not going. Put on your shoes, start your engine and go now!
google avatar

Tiffany H.

Yelp
Heard the food here is good so we decided to try it. You order online and pay online without any waiter or waitress contact but they do have a few running around clearing tables, getting your order, greeting you, etc., Started with chicken momos which are basically like chicken dumplings served with a mild curry sauce and spicy hot sauce. My friends and I like hot but this hot sauce definitely had a kick! We then got chicken tandoori and tikka masala, rice and naan. You have to order rice and naan bc it does not come with the dish. The prices are all $20 plus per entree but the serving sizes are pretty large and enough to share between two people. My friend said the chicken in the masala was dry but our tandoori chicken came out on a sizzling platter hot and had lots of grilled onions and other veggies with it. Overall the food was great though it took awhile for it to come out.
google avatar

Vivian L.

Yelp
We stopped by after our flight for dinner and were very pleasantly surprised! The momos were delicious and juicy. I had some of the best saag paneer I've had in my life which I wasn't expecting in this area of the US. The biryani was delicious and I loved the crispy onions on top. We also ordered the butter chicken which was creamy and well balanced. The service was friendly and my water glass was always full! The vibe is homey and there were a lot of families and large table get togethers when we were there. It was a lovely dinner!

Yelp
So... this place is Hot...!!! Temperature hot that is. No air conditioning so keep that in mind if dining there in the summer. The cuisine offered was a very nice assortment of Nepalese delicacies with some Indian and Pakistani dishes mixed in as well. The service was great although there was a lot of confusion on which dish went where, as can be expected after ordering from a digital menu. My wife and I shared the meal and started with some yummy Garlic Naan and Chicken MoMo which are popular Nepalese dumplings filled with minced chicken, onion, spring onion, garlic, ginger, and cilantro with homemade spices. There was a delicious curry dipping sauce served as well. For our main we split the Chicken Tikka Kabab which I expected would come out on a skewer, but actually came out on a hot cast iron plate and smothered with a delicious sauce. From the menu description it is chicken breast marinated overnight in variety of spices ginger garlic paste and yogurt, skewered then baked in clay oven. It was a quiet place and all in all a good dinner. The walk back to the Hilton Grand Vacation resort was only a few blocks. If in the mood for a spicy, flavorful meal of Nepalese food, then look no further!
