Shantara Resort | Best places to stay in Port Douglas

"The standard dress code in Australia is ‘smart casual’ and this term applies perfectly to the Shantara Resort, a contemporary apartment hotel in the heart of Port Douglas. There are no Balinese flourishes here, just workmanlike modern architecture – and a slightly austere swimming pool. Apartments are well-equipped and decorated in the Aussie beach style, in blues, fawns and taupe. With its adults-only policy, this immaculate mid-size property will certainly appeal to couples. My husband and I had a lovely stay at Shantara and plan to go back. The rooms were very comfortable and it was delightful having breakfast out on our balcony. Our view to the pool was terrific as was the time spent swimming and relaxing in and around the pool. Reception was always friendly and helpful with information and assisting with any request we had. We were walking distance to the main shopping/restaurant strip as well as to the beach and marina. The whole property was beautifully maintained and very clean. It was a great place to stay.

This was a good choice for a first visit to Port Douglas. Adults only meant it was super quiet (we were not on the side with the road) and it is in a great location for going to the beach, port or town - all easily walkable. We had a small studio which was a bit snug for 6 nights although the balcony was lovely and a good size. As others have noted the rooms are a bit dated and with wear and tear evident, but the grounds and gardens are immaculate. Found all the staff helpful - particularly Caitlyn who helped with transport to Palm Cove when I left booking it a bit late!

We returned to Shantara after 15 years and were not disappointed. We love having a one-bedroom apartment with pool access. The location is so convenient to the beach, the wharf and the shops, pubs and restaurants. We ordered the breakfast pack which was very generous in variety and size. It's definitely something we will do again, because we've already booked for next year! We are certainly not waiting 15 years for our next visit. Just love Shantara! Thanks to the wonderful staff.

We really loved our stay here at Shantara. Our apartment was spacious, clean and had everything we needed for a most comfortable stay; it also had a shared deck onto the pool and we enjoyed using the pool a number of times. The explore Port Douglas tour package was fantastic. We will certainly return!

The location was fantastic as we enjoyed walking to the cafes, restaurants and beaches. Adults only was another attraction as we arranged to travel during school holiday peak period. We spent time in the pool each day as the temperature was perfect. The room was a good size, unfortunately we could hear people walking on the floor above late at night and early the morning. Having access to washing and drying facilities just outside of our room was a bonus. Overall we would stay at Shantara again due to the location.

My wife and I spent 4 nights at the Shantara in June. The facility is within walking distance of town, harbor, and beach. It doesn't look impressive from the outside but the rooms were well appointed and the pool area was great. We took advantage of the grill one evening. Being an adults-only resort, the pool area was quiet and relaxing. Someone is available for assistance during the day, but it is not staffed like a hotel. Not a 5-star resort by amenity standards but very nice for the price point.

On our 3-week trip through Queensland, I was most looking forward to this hotel above all others. It was my biggest disappointment. I booked direct, thinking that would give us a good room. Not so! The one-bed suite we got had the bedroom window on a busy road and was a bit dark. The balcony was fine overlooking the pool, but the placement of the rooms around the pool means you can hear every conversation around you. We tried to change rooms to get a bedroom off the road, but no way. The pool was OK, a bit stained on the bottom. There is no ocean view whatsoever and you have to cross that busy road to get to the beach. Given how many other nice options there are in Port Douglas, many on the beach, I wouldn't stay here, unless all you want to do is spend the day by the pool. Pluses: the kitchen was well-equipped, there was a good washer & dryer, and parking was smooth.

I didn't stay here but when the place I stayed said they wouldn't call a shuttle for me (no roaming on my phone) the nice lady helped me out at reception here. I am very grateful for her kindness and understanding. The reception area and pools looked amazing!

Yelp
This is a great little spot in port Douglas. Close to all the shopping and beaches but far enough out that you don't get to much traffic and noise. The rooms are all great with all the equipment to fend for your self. There is no stove but a full Barbecue for doing any cooking you may have. The pools are fantastic after a long day out on the Great Barrier Reef or just hanging around town shopping.

Yelp
Overall we really enjoyed this place. There were so many to choose from in Port Douglas and probably hard to go wrong. This place has a fantastic location a few minutes walk from either the beach or Macrossan Street which is the main drag of shops and cafes. It seemed like a newer property so everything was new and very clean. The room we had on the second floor had a nice balcony overlooking a pool with a separate bedroom and large bathroom with shower and hot tub. It had a full kitchen with dish washer and full size fridge plus the washer and dryer were just outside our door. Staff very good and very helpful setting up some tours we wanted to go on. The only slight negatives I suppose is a resort would usually have at least a bar if not restaurant in it and room cleaning was not included. Which was no big deal, did not need it anyway. Otherwise we loved Shantara and would recommend it to anyone visiting Port Douglas.

Yelp
This was our 1st hotel in Australia in February, '17. My suitcase didn't arrive at Cairns airport of course! I was concerned about it coming the next day as we were going to be gone all day, it was hot and I didn't want some items inside my suitcase to melt. Upon check-in, not only did the staff assure me that they take care of these occurrences all the time, but they would personally manage the transfer of my suitcase so that we could go off and enjoy our day. They also reconfirmed all of our site seeing excursions (I went on a 6 week holiday to Australia, New Zealand and Thailand, and no other hotel did this for us!)! When we got back from our day on the GBR, my suitcase was in our room! The room we had was accommodated nicely. We had everything we needed to store and eat meals in our room ourselves. We even had a convection oven, which I never saw again in any hotel room on my adventures. The room was quiet and overlooked their lovely pool. I liked the fact that they didn't offer housekeeping - less intrusion. The hotel was a 5 minute walk to most of the restaurants, the beach, and about 10 minutes from the grocery store. Since eating out is so expensive there, eating at least a meal or two in our room made sense. We just had to haul it back from the grocery store! So, while carrying a gallon of water for 10 minutes may have been a pain, we avoided the noise a chaos of staying on Macrossan Street itself. The staff were beyond friendly and welcoming, the beds comfortable, the shower pressure perfect, the A/C worked! I would highly recommend Shantara Resort!
