After spending the afternoon immersing ourselves in the captivating artwork of Jean-Michel Basquiat, my friends and I decided it was time for lunch. We considered various spots when someone mentioned Joyce, but then it hit us--none of us had ever been to Fixings! Excited to try something new, I quickly made a reservation and we headed over right away. The anticipation was building as we looked forward to both the food and continuing our artistic discussions over a delicious meal.
Since we had a reservation, the wait was not long at all--only about five minutes from our scheduled time. Once we were seated, we were promptly greeted by our waitress, Mary.
As you enter the restaurant, you're greeted by the infectious energy of 90s music, instantly sparking feelings of nostalgia.
We started off with Fried Green Tomatoes. They're cornmeal-crusted and fried up nice and crispy until golden brown. Paired with a tasty chipotle mayo that adds just the right kick. A perfect bite to kick off the meal!
A crispy cornmeal crust gives way to a juicy, perfectly seasoned tomato, with just the right balance of salty and sweet. The tomato is fried to a golden brown, adding a satisfying crunch to each bite. And to take it to the next level, we serve it with a side of creamy chipotle mayo that adds a smoky, spicy kick.
The cornmeal-crusted catfish was absolutely delicious! It had a perfect golden-brown coating that was so crispy, and inside, the fish was super juicy and flaky. Honestly, it was so flavorful that I didn't even need tartar sauce--I could have just eaten it on its own! Each bite was a great mix of crunch and tender goodness, making it seriously satisfying. This dish was a total winner!
The mac and cheese was undeniably delicious, boasting a creamy, velvety cheese sauce that enveloped each noodle in rich, savory goodness. However, the noodles themselves were a touch overcooked, resulting in a slightly mushy texture that detracted from the overall experience. While the flavor was rich and comforting, the lack of bite in the pasta left it feeling somewhat softer than ideal. Despite this minor flaw, the dish still satisfied with its indulgent, homey appeal.
Candied tabs are small, flat sweets with a shiny coating. They have a chewy texture that may initially be enjoyable, but their overwhelming sweetness can quickly become too much.
The crust is crispy and slightly crunchy, with a delicate sheen that hints at the rich butter and cream that went into its making. As you take your first bite, the cornbread yields to a tender, fluffy interior that's infused with the sweetness of fresh corn kernels. The peach butter is definitely a nice touch.
Skip the adult kool-aid isn't worth it, but definitely get the regular kool-aid.
