SHORT VERSION. Within an hour of arriving at urgent care in Sharp Rees-Stealy Sorrento Mesa hospital, I received simple surgery for removing cholla spines from my foot, and I was provided with a 2-week supply of antibiotic (Cephalexin capsules). Also, within the first twenty minutes of arriving, the clerk accepted my medical insurance and I didn't have to pay one penny.
LONG VERSION. In February 2019, I took one of my many visits to Anza Borrego Desert State Park. As part of my photographic expeditions, I stopped at Campbell Grade and explored an area with cholla cactus and ocotillo. Eventually, I found a great spot to set up my tripod (see, attached photo). The horizon took the form of the snow-covered Laguna Mountain range. Anyway, I was wearing running shoes where the uppers took the form of a fabric network. The cholla spines had no trouble at all making multiple jabs into my foot. A day or so later, I wound up with an infection, and the side of my foot had a dark pink area the size of a silver dollar.
RAPID ONSET INFECTIONS. At that time, I was already aware that some types of infections acquired from the soil are rapid onset and can result in the need for an amputation or can result in death. See, for example, these articles about "flesh-eating bacteria" (Khamnuan (2015) Int. J. Gen. Med. 8:195-202; Bryant (2012) Expert Rev. Anti-Infect. Ther. 10:1-3; Okuzono (2018) Ann. Clin. Microbiol. Antimicrob. 17:31). And so, I contacted by phone a physician (Sandeep Soni) in Poway, CA who specialized in infections. The receptionist told me that I could not be seen, unless my medical records were transmitted to their office. I told her that I do not have any medical records and that, even if I did, I could be dead by the time they were transmitted to her. Then, the receptionist put a nurse on the telephone. I told the nurse that I had an infection, and that I needed to be treated right away. But the nurse also told me that I could not be seen, unless they had my medical records. Then, I told the nurse that she and the doctor are required to obey the Hypocratic Oath, and then I accused the doctor of malpractice.
SHARP REES-STEALY URGENT CARE COMES TO THE RESCUE. Then, I decided that I should drive myself to the emergency room of a hospital, and so I went to the nearest hospital, which was Sharp Rees-Stealy on Genetic Center Drive in the Sorrento Mesa district of San Diego. At that time, I had never heard of, "Urgent Care." Within 20 minutes, they accepted me as a patient and, a few minutes later, the physician was performing simple surgery on my foot and she opened both wounds a little bit with a scalpel and then she removed a couple of embedded cholla spines. Stitches were not needed (a bandage did the job). I took the Cephalexin capsules for a week and the infection disappeared (when I was ten years old, my father taught me that the 4 signs of infection are, rubor, tumor, calor, and dolor. After a week these signs disappeared). FIVE STARS for Sharp Reese-Stealy Urgent Care.
