How Joe’s Ice Cream Shop Got Caught Up in San Francisco’s ‘Copaganda’ Conversation | Eater SF

"I found that Subramanian Krishnan started Shastha Foods in San Jose two decades ago, and after years of establishing himself as a prominent Indian foods distributor he began selling his own dosa batter to Costco in March 2022; his dosa output — and his dreams — have since grown exponentially." - Paolo Bicchieri

I have been taking Shastha foods batter from Costco Kirkland and now from Costco Issaquah since August 24 The best batter for both idli and dosa. I have tried other batter brands here like Annapoorna etc. Nothing compares to this brand as idlis are soft and puffy. Dosas are crisp and taste well. Authentic south Indian batter available here in Seattle. We add additional salt to suit our taste. I am truly surprised with the poor ratings given by others here. Perhaps Costco has better cold storage facility and the ingredient is good. Whereas other Indian stores that carry this product don't maintain the low temperature

Really horrible experience with the dosa batter. I bought this batter literally two days ago from costco Sunnyvale. When I opened it there was fungus on top. It happened with me few months back as well. The batter is still well within its enjoy by date. Hello I am here again and adding that I bought batter from costco today (july 1, 2025) and it turned out bad again. Please see new images added to this review.

I would never recommend this. Ordered 2 boxes - one alphonso box for myself (Dallas) - one baiganpalli for my friend (Houston). Every single mango was rotten at the core for alphonso - and 3 out of 6 baiganpalli was rotten. Pictures below as proof:

Delicious Indian mangoes! They do free mango tasting some Saturdays. We went for that and bought a pack of Kesari mangoes. Properly packed and very sweet. They let us check the box to ensure mangoes are in good shape. Highly recommended for your summer mango fix.

Bought Alphonso mangoes box from them , every single mango was spoilt and gone rotten from inside . Pathetic experience . The whole box was around 50$ which is damn expensive compared to other Indian stores . bought a banginpally box as well and that was not so good either . I would never buy again from here .

I love everything the founder is doing to bring focus to the Agro diversity in India. However the batter business maybe needs to stop. Over the last few months every single batter container I purchased from Trinethra, India cash and Carry etc are all spoiled. Even worse, one was already open when I tried to make idlis. If you have lost the ability to audit the stores and maintain your quality stop selling perishables. No one has time to return items to the store and such. If we did we would make our own batter 😔🙏

Extremely disappointed with the quality of the Alphonso and Rasalu mangoes shipped by them. Every mango was spoilt and looks like there is absolutely no quality checks of their products.

DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE WE MADE! We bought a box of mangoes, but out of 7, 6 were rotten! We tried contacting them through phone, email, and everything else as you can see in the attached screenshots, but they never responded. It's frustrating when a company ignores its customers like this. They should at least own up to their mistake. We understand you can't check every mango, but you should take responsibility. It's not right to just take money and send rotten fruit. We suggest avoiding this company altogether. They're not reliable and don't care about their customers.
