On the Grid : Shatto 39 Lanes

"Shatto 39 Lanes is one of the few still-awesome bowling alleys around LA. Walk up a cascading flight of red metal stairs and suddenly you're back in '78... pins crashing, arcade games blaring, music on the loudspeaker and people generally having a pretty, pretty good time. If need a snack break between games, look no further than the dimly-lit bar and cafe, where you can re-charge washing down the most basic of grilled cheeses with well drinks. Shatto offers a striking (puns!) 40 bowling lanes, a billiards parlor, foosball tables and two video game rooms, so there's something for everyone. Alright, alright, alright." - The HR Dept

The 11 Best Bars In Koreatown

"You probably don’t always want to go bowling, but when you do, go to Shatto 39. The bare-bones space has $7 games at night and is open till 2am every day. The bar has affordable, dangerously strong drinks that will somehow also enhance your ability to roll a strike. Also, don’t worry if you forgot socks. There’s a vending machine where you can buy a pair." - brant cox, sylvio martins

⭐ Overall Atmosphere Shatto 39 Lanes is a Koreatown classic, operating since 1954. Its 39 lanes come with a retro‑nostalgic charm—think vintage bowling feel, warm lighting, and that lively “pins crashing” energy . The vibe is casual, friendly, and oh‑so‑authentic. ⸻ 🎳 Bowling & Billiards • 39 lanes well‑maintained enough for casual play, though serious bowlers might notice lanes aren’t factory‑waxed . • Billiards room stocked with ample tables—a great addition for pool lovers . • Arcade corner: A few pinball and Pac‑Man machines still chime in nostalgic fun . ⸻ 🍹 Drinks & Food • Bar: Serves strong, affordably‑priced drinks—think $4–7 cocktails and $7 games at night . • Snack bar: Classic comfort‑food fare like nachos, wings, burgers, hot dogs and more—greasy spoon style with diner charm . • Extras: Forgot socks? No worries—the vending machine has you covered . ⸻ 💵 Pricing & Logistics • Lane rental (up to 5 people): ~$30/hr weekdays before 6 pm; ~$40–60/hr nights & weekends. Shoe rental is $5 each (). • Walk‑in games: About $6–7/game at night . • Parking: Free lot under the building, though tight—ideal for small cars . ⸻ 🙌 Crowd & Service • Mornings/Weekdays: Chill and laid‑back—perfect for a mellow afternoon outing (). • Weekends/Nights: Buzzing and social, especially with the bar crowd after 10 pm (). • Staff: Friendly bartenders and security add to the welcoming vibe. Occasional lane glitches get prompt attention . • Family‑friendly hours: Under‑21 guests welcome until bar opens . ⸻ 👍 Highlights & Considerations • What’s awesome: • Retro, no‑frills charm with lots of lanes and extras. • Affordably priced bowling and drinks. • Pool tables and arcade make it more than just a bowling alley . • Heads‑up: • Lane surface might not suit advanced bowlers . • Parking space is limited—plan accordingly. • Weekends are lively—expect crowds and possible wait times . ⸻ 📝 Final Verdict Shatto 39 Lanes is a beloved Koreatown institution that captures old‑school LA bowling culture. Whether you’re rolling strikes, shooting pool, gaming arcades, or sipping a stiff cocktail, it’s a fantastic spot for groups, dates, and families during the day. Expect a lively, energetic scene at night—a true throwback experience with modern perks. Score: 8/10 – A no‑holds‑barred retro gem offering entertainment, drinks, and nostalgia at a great value. ⸻ ✨ Tip Summary • Go weekdays before 6 pm for a chill vibe. • Visit weekend nights if you’re after top‑ tier energy and people‑watching. • Bring a compact car for that free garage parking. • Arrive early or expect a short wait on busy evenings.

Google
Decent pricing for bowling. Security’s around the parking and establishment. Definitely cool vibes and great ratio. If you’re a decent or pro bowler, the lanes aren’t made to curve the balls. They aren’t waxed to perfection, unless you bring your own bowling ball, for better curves. They have a bar, great nachos and Pool tables too. Cool spot.

Google
This bowling alley seems to be a longstanding location in Koreatown for bowling. Hugely popular on weekend nights so you might have to sign up for a waitlist to get a bowling lane. There is free parking underneath the building but it is very tight so you should have a smaller car and check all your mirrors and cameras to adjust. They check IDs at the entrance because there is also a bar there. Lots of families with small kids here during peak hours. For bowling, shoe rentals are $5 per person and you can rent the lane by number of games or by the hour. Machines are intuitive to use and work well, staff are helpful when there are any further issues. Very straightforward and fun to bowl here. There are snacks if you’re hungry and small arcade games here too if you’re looking for other smaller activities.

Google
Great atmosphere and well-maintained lanes. Staff was friendly and service was smooth. Good music, decent drink selection, and a fun place to unwind without the crowds or chaos. Would definitely return for a relaxed night out.

I went for girl's night about a year ago and then recently went again for a friend's birthday party. They have underground parking, and it is extremely claustrophobic. You could easily hit ,scratch, and dent the car next to you and vice versa. I wasn't a fan of that at all and actually needed help from the friendly security guard to get out of the tight spot when I was done with the evening. They have porta potties. Ewwwww. You read that right. They have those blue plastic containers in the parking lot too and I'm not sure if the water dripping was h20 or something else. My skin crawls just thinking of it. The inside is in need of a remodel and they should really fix their plumbing issue. The pool tables are plenty but cramped so you gotta watch how u play or you could end up punching someone in the gut with your stick. Drinks are on the weak side but my company got messed up because they racked up a 700 bill on shots and bowling. I didnt want to drink or eat at a spot that has to subject their patrons to nasty porta potties due to severe plumbing issues. I went for a friend but this is not a place I'd recommend or go to again. I don't like bowling and their are cleaner pool halls around I can go to if the fancy hits me again. The employees were nice. That's all I got.

Google
We spontaneously planned a family night , beneficial to us this time, we didn’t need to make a reservation, they accommodated us very kindly, efficiently and patiently! They were even concerned if the groups were the way we wanted or they offered to move it around for us making sure all our experience was positive and fun!

Fun. Nice people. Good value. Free parking. Sanitized shoes. Food and booze. What more can you ask for?

Yelp
Great place to go with a group of friends. I normally come here to bowl but tonight I went to play pool and it was great. They have so many billiards tables and good prices too. It's not a legit billiards bar but they are good enough to hang out with friends and have fun. Loud environment so many go to a regular pool hall if you want it to be quieter. Food isn't anything to rave over but this place isn't really meant for fun. Go here to bowl, play pool, drink and play arcade games.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has stood the test of time. Although a lot of the arcades that used to be here are gone. There's no more Street Fighter. No more Galaga. They do have Pac-Man. They have some pool tables and a bar for 21 +over I've only ever bought French fries and hotdogs. But I mean it's frozen food so what do you expect? Free parking underneath.

Yelp
Pretty great spot to catch up with friends, family co workers, take a girl on a date ! They have lot of parking underneath the bowling structure After 10pm they ID so you kids under age acting tough better be inside before then lol hahaha I was young once ! Make sure you don't bring a hydro flask or any liquids at the line security very uptight about the policy, but hey it's there job The bar is very chill , bowling , pool arcade just great spot would recommend it

Yelp
Used to pop into Shatto 39 Lanes often with my ex, we mostly would have a drink or hit the arcade, air hockey, billiards, and misc video games. I've only been in once since and the lanes are nice, well kept. It's usually truly well lit and they run a smooth ship, especially with security. Rental shoes for $5 per person, enjoy rates varying from $30 to $65 per hour lane per depending on the day and time frame, which isn't to bad with up to 5 people max per lane. Noon until 6PM, Monday through Saturday is $15 less and Sundays are a flat $50. THey have Garage Parking with plenty of spaces as well as street parking in the area (mostly metered). Thursdays are a good night and Fridays as well. Good for parties, birthdays, celebrations and events. Okay food and drink menu... More than you'd expect (burgers, appetizers/sides, hot dogs, entree, desserts, coffee, soda and Agua Frescas). Bowl a strike at Shatto 39!

Yelp
Prices are decent and the lanes are super old school. I enjoyed it! Would return here again maybe at a busier time. When I went it was completely dead inside. Music options were good though!
google avatar

Yelp
No frills old school bowling alley. Great place to go with friends to bowl. It can definitely get super busy tho

Yelp
This bowling alley has most things a bowling alley should have, lots of lanes, shoes, balls, pool tables, greasy food, video games, pinball, air hockey and under the alley parking! But they wouldn't let me bring inside my bottle of water. There is a security guy outside and a sign. We paid $55 for an hour of a lane plus $5 each to rent shoes. $80 for 5 of us to play was $16 each, not terrible. We had fun, ate greasy food and played some games. We'd return.

Yelp
I recently visited this bowling alley for a birthday celebration and had a deeply disappointing and frustrating experience. Upon arrival, the staff did not explain the difference in pricing options or what helps their customers. As a group of mostly women, we felt dismissed from the start. During our game the equipment was faulty right away, not recording our scores correctly and not resetting properly. We even had to wait at times for staff to push the ball forward back into position. We explained everything that was going wrong with our lane and only asked that we at least finish the last 3 and a half rounds of the game to the staff, who then called the Manager Mario. Mario took 15 minutes to come to the front desk, and when our situation was explained to him he was extremely unprofessional, yelling at us and waving his hands dismissively, insisting it was our fault for paying the hour instead of per game, even though the price was exactly the same. We were absolutely disgusted by Mario and his team's behavior. They were dismissive, disrespectful and unwelcoming to us first time guests. It was clear that they took pride in their poor service, even claiming that the GM supports their behavior, and that he would be "getting a raise for this complaint". This appalling attitude ruined what was supposed to be a joyful celebration. Based on this experience, we will never return to this bowling alley and cannot recommend it to others. Save yourself the frustration and take your business elsewhere.

Yelp
This is an older bowling alley with a vintage ball return but I thought that's what made it really cool. It's a really large space, many lanes, it was really clean and service is great. We were able to get a lane right away on a Sunday afternoon. We had our 7 year old with us so we asked for a ramp to help her bowl and it was brought to us right away. The ramps are these cute plastic dinosaur ramps that are easy to move around when not in use. When we asked to have the guard rails put up for our second game, they came so fast. Bowling balls of different sizes were easy to find but an 8 was the lightest they had which was heavy for my daughter to try and bowl without the ramp. The only issue we had was they seemed to put people with kids next to each other but that didn't work so great when each had a large dino ramp. The ramp is pretty large so even if we moved ours out of the way when adults were bowling, our neighbors weren't so great about it so it could be a little distracting especially when they let their kids just play on it. They have a cafe with drinks and food and there is also a full bar. We ordered fries and chicken nuggets which my daughter really enjoyed. Bowling was fun. The screens and bowling system worked great. The place seemed really clean and organized. There is a parking garage below which is a plus.

Yelp
It's always a fun spot....I don't really go there to bowl. I work in the area, so we usually just go in for a couple of drinks and some cheap eats from their snack bar. Chit chat with the co-workers. Bar tenders are super chill (all three of them are awesome). The security guards are a hoot. They'll have something smart to say more times than not. Over all a good experience if you don't have a stick up your

Yelp
Shatto is a great place to bowl. It die not have all of the frills of most newer or remolded bowling alleys but if you just want to bowl you're in the right place. It is clean , and has numerous security guards on duty. After 10 there is no one allowed under 21. They have a couple of pool tables, a few arcade games, a bar, and a snack bar. Like I said, it's a frills old school bowling alley and we definitely enjoyed ourselves. Oh, and it along with the restrooms were all very clean and tidy. I will definitely be back soon The only reason I do it give it a five star is because compared to the newer bowling alleys this one is a bit outdated. I wish I could give it 4.5 stars.
google avatar

Princess G.

Yelp
First time here and what a fun experience! Interesting entrance, at least three security guards in the afternoon. Other than that, the venue was clean, reasonably priced, and customer service was good. There's an open room sports bar attached. You can ordered at the bar and bring the drinks back to your lane. The panel has some fun options, like taking a profile picture. Also, there's an arcade and a room dedicated to billiards/pool tables.
google avatar

Chalee T.

Yelp
I had a lot of fun with my office friends. The food exceeded my expectations. The diet coke and bowling ball return were a miss. The soda was flat. There were many times when the bowling ball went backwards on the track as they didn't make it up the ball return hill. That's alright, I still had fun. The cafe was slow to open on time and there was no food runner. Our food came out as our party organizer was delivering orders upon orders of food. I ordered a chicken burrito and asada nachos. I was skeptical of the food but it was very good and too much for me to finish. The burrito or the nachos were enough for one person or both of them to share between two people.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Great bowling alley. I've been there now. Three times. Each time was excellent. The first time was quite crowded but they have an ample free parking underneath the alley. I'm a short flight of steps up to the entrance. There are plenty of lanes that seem to be working, just fine as we did not encounter any difficulties with the lanes that we use, and the other electronics scoring was working Satisfactory. There is a nice casual bar for those who are not bowling or want to take a break and have a cocktail. Or beer or wine. The snack bar leaves a little to be desired, but at least they have some cheap junk food available so if you're with kids, they won't starve. There are vending machines for snacks and drinks as well. Important, especially when the line of the snack bar is Long. The bowling shoes factory and the ball selection was fine as well. A good time to go to miss the crowd is early Sunday afternoon as well as probably Saturday. Just as a tip.
google avatar

Valerie E.

Yelp
A little outdated but nonetheless an affordable bowling alley. The free parking garage is helpful and they have a full bar which is nice. The cafe needs better food options but also, it's not a place you go to for the food.
google avatar

Sam C.

Yelp
This place sucks ass. Security here was super rude and unkind. This establishment is horrible and never coming back to this shit hole. Maybe hire some good security. Food was horrible.
google avatar

Patrick F.

Yelp
I bowl a lot in the valley, and happened to be in LA and decided why not? Let me tell you why not. It is expensive($65 for an hour), there is no AC (at least not to be felt), the lanes are cramped, the balls fall off the return, and during our hour there, our lane got jammed 2 times. Did this count for our time? You bet it did. Save your money--go someplace else.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in LA. Awesome date spot. The pool tables are actually good quality.

Yelp
This Place is FUN FUN FUN!!!! Something for everyone seriously. Lots of lanes for bowling, a pool room with about 5 tables and a good bit of arcade games. Not to mention they have a bar and serve food. It gets even better! They have a FREE parking garage If you decide to bowl you can customize your scoreboard with a selfie of each player Their is security at the entrance to check vaccination and the staff is friendly and very helpful. I highly recommend this place for a fun night out with friends or date night. Enjoy!!
google avatar

Steven H.

Yelp
Very cool vibes here, family friendly (except for the pot smokers loitering in the parking lot). Definitely check this bowling alley out if you're in the area and in the mood to bowl or just want a place to chill as they do have an arcade, pool tables and billiards as well.
google avatar

Sonam K.

Yelp
My friends and I had so much fun here! The drinks are super cheap and very strong and the bowling itself is also inexpensive. Our bartender was very friendly and attentive. The lanes are clean and the ambiance is casual. There is so much parking in the building itself. Love the location as well. Will definitely come back
google avatar

Seth L.

Yelp
Super fun lanes & a remarkably friendly staff. Shatto glows with a throwback vibe and retro feel in all of the right ways. Righteous arcade and pinball games, pool tables, a dark comfortable bar and a delicious greasy spoon style diner (cash only at the diner). Family friendly earlier in the day and younger and more rambunctious later at night. **Chef's kiss**

Yelp
Had a lot of fun here last Friday! I drove past this place so many times, but it gave run down bowling alley vibes so I never went. That said, I really enjoyed my visit. Free parking! Ok, to level set, it feels like you're in the 90s when you're inside..my friend said it was giving stranger things vibes haha. That said, idk I sorta liked it? Is that weird to say? Checking in was easy. Because there's like what 40 lanes? The wait was short, just 20ish minutes. During that time we got beers and food. Their food was so reasonably price and huge portions so that was good. The onion rings and mozzarella sticks were delish. It was $60/hour and $4 shoe rental. Pretty fair I'd say. Overall, it was a fun bowling night!

Yelp

Yelp
Piece of crap shit establishment, rip off bar managarment with zero integrigty in what bartender says vs joke "management"

Yelp
Shatto is a throwback to the past with old-school (not restored vintage) bowling lanes, multiple pool areas, an arcade with Jurassic Park, Fast and the Furious, and Halo, and a bar with food. For about $10-15 per game per person with shoes, you can bowl for a good while. Wasn't a wait when I went on a Saturday night. Will be back. Free parking lot below

Yelp
Came here for a work party and had a SHOCKINGLY terrible experience. The security guard aggressively yelled at me out the gate for having an empty aluminum travel mug, saying I was "being deceptive" by "sneaking in liquids". Here's the story: I walked up to Shatto lanes sipping the last of my green tea, then put the empty travel mug in my bag before approaching the entrance. The security guard said, in an angry tone of voice, "I saw you, you better bring that bottle back to the car." Taken aback, I said, "But it's empty," pulling it out of my bag and turning the aluminum mug over to show him there was nothing inside. He said "It doesn't matter, you were being deceptive. BRING IT BACK TO THE CAR, or you're not allowed in here." Embarrassed by no fault of my own, in front of my boss and work colleagues, I turned and walked back to the car, and said "Well you don't have to be a jerk about it." After putting the empty mug back in my car, I reluctantly returned back to the entrance, a gross feeling in me after being so harshly reprimanded for such a small "offense". Humbled, I walked up the stairs, when he popped out of the entrance again, bellowing, "NOPE. YOU'RE NOT COMING IN HERE." I responded, "But I brought the container back to my car, Sir." He said, "It doesn't matter, you were being deceptive." After my boss spoke with the manager, who seemed meek and bullied by the security guard, he told us that he was subject to the discretion of the guard. We ended up having to call all of our employees and find another place to celebrate, sincerely shocked by this disgusting display of ego. To make matters more laughable, we found out from an employee that when he had gone to Shatto just 3 days prior, the security guard patted him down upon entry, finding a pocket knife. He kindly set the knife off to the side, and when my friend went to pick up his knife after bowling, the security guard showed off his own knife. Strange how someone with an empty mug gets reprimanded and kicked out, while someone with a knife gets such friendly service. The one person who made it inside the bowling alley before all this started told us that it was dark and dismal in there, with only 2 other bowlers, and the food/snacks/bar wasn't even open. Glad we didn't end up giving them any business! My boss was a regular there but he said he's never going back. You are warned!

June W.

Yelp
So much fun! Had an amazing time with friends. Drinks are inexpensive which is always great. A bit pricey we paid 155 for 2 hours and 5 people. But we had fun
google avatar

Albert J.

Yelp
Worst experience. They closed their restaurant and weren't serving food, so I ordered food for my friend who hadn't eaten all day, and they wouldn't let him eat it inside, even though they weren't serving food anymore, then I was one frame away from finishing the game, and they turned it off, I didn't even get to finish the game I paid for, but other lanes kept bowling. Front desk was rude and ignored half our requests.

Jessica L.

Yelp
Here's a summary of how our experience went! - a decently sized parking lot with slightly tight spaces - security guard prior entering (no water bottles) - placed my name on the waitlist (it's on an iPad/tablet) - waited about 10-15 min for a lane for 3 - shoe rental and everything was pretty affordable!

Yelp
More like 3.5 stars. Solid place to go bowling. Seems old school. Vibes were good. I think it should be 3.5 rather than 4 because it was pretty expensive for my party of 3 ($80 for 1 hr). Also the thing where the bowling balls are in place don't have any rails so sometimes the balls came off and would fall on the ground. Seems like a safe place for fam and kids tho; there's security guards on patrol
google avatar

Robbin R.

Yelp
I love this place! It is down home old school bowling alley with reasonable prices. Don't get me wrong, there is a time and place for the high class over priced LA flashy bowling lanes, but for the everyday, I am going here! Staff is nice, it's clean, the bar has your typical domestic beers (there were laguanitas, so I was a happy camper) and some snacks. Air hockey and some other arcade games. I've been here at random times of the day and week, never been over crowded. There is free parking in the lot and security during the evenings and weekends. Enjoy!

Yelp
Went there for the first time in years it was ok nothing special the attendant they have helping was weird and stalkerish towards the females in our group
google avatar

Katy W.

Yelp
Shatto 39 Lanes is definitely the spot to go if you want to have a fun night with your friends. They have arcade, pool tables, and bowling. Aside from that, they have a restaurant and bar if you want to eat and drink. That was perfect because I wanted to eat before playing any games. I ordered the Supreme Nachos and Tacos for the table. The food was delicious and the ambiance was nice. There's a lot of pool tables available so you don't have to wait for one. I went on a Sunday night and they closed at 1am. Parking was convient since they have a garage available
google avatar

Kirsten H.

Yelp
This place is a lot of retro fun! While the lanes are a little more expensive to those from outside the LA area, it's a fantastic deal here. Free parking garage, too, a huge added bonus. Food was very overpriced but delicious, and the facility even had a sock vending machine for those forgetful folks such as myself. The bowling screens had funny images on them, which was an added bonus for me. Workers there were timely and friendly with their services. My friends and I will be coming here again!

Yelp
Rundown alley didn't let me bring in my puppy sleeping in my bag but for some reason allows other dogs(clearly not service dogs unless a Frenchie can help you see) in? Don't know if lil bro was on a power trip or something but this place weak as hell. Took my business to lucky strike where everything's new and updated with better pricing and get this, they let you bring your harmless sleeping puppy without a bother. Trashatto Lanes. - try bringing your dog for the which dog can come in lottery!

Yelp
Terrible experience with management treating another patron very poorly. Can't in good conscience go back.

Fun spot to hangout with friends any night of the week. Came here on a Friday with a few friends and the place was packed. I've been here a few times before but I guess this is the place to be on a Friday night. My friends and I had to wait about 45 minutes before a lane opened up for us. There's a ton of pool tables, one room adjacent to all the games and a whole other room in the bar area. The drinks at the bar are super cheap. My gin & tonic was only $6, but they're not all that strong. My group ended up playing just one game and with shoe rentals we each paid less than $15. Fun times! Parking: Free garage underneath the building

Yelp
I am disappointed in this place. I have gone to this place for years and love it! Now I will never be going back!!!! Don't go to this place and use the hourly rate! The manager is so rude and disrespectful. There should be signage that states that the hourly rate starts 5 minutes after you play. The manager was arguing with customers is in unacceptable. He should have taken accountability for his staff never stating this. He was completely unreasonable was just disrespectful. As someone who owns a business your manager should be trained in customer service. We ended only playing for twenty minutes and not even finishing because we thought the game started when you start bowling.

Yelp
We arrived after midnight on a Tuesday and the food area was closed already but the bar and lanes were still open. The ambience was super laid back and fun. The drinks were delicious. My BF and I played two games and had a few drinks. The music was retro 80's vibe. Great service with a smile from everyone. We look forward to going back and trying some of their pizza. The lime green taco truck just outside had some fantastic chicken quesadillas and burritos as well.

Yelp
Decent bowling place. Every time I've come it's pretty empty which is great because I don't like waiting for a lane. The prices are also unbeatable since one game plus shoe rental is less than $10. No other places can beat their price. They have a parking garage underneath. The parking spots are very compact and you will see signs dusting that they are not responsible for your belonging in your car. I would recommend coming here and I enjoy playing here. I'm always up for bowling. They also have pool tables , Fooseball and food you can buy.

Yelp
First of all, love how there is free garage parking. Remember to consume all outside beverages and food prior upon entrance. Forgot socks because you or someone you know wore wedges (*insert other shoes that do not require socks*)? Shatto 39 Lanes has you covered -- pick out a pair using one of their vending machines. Pay and pick-up bowling shoes at the front desk. I had asked for a 5, but they were definitely too big on me. Faintly painted on I could see it was a 6 1/2? I was too lazy to go back to ask about it. Pick out your balls -- there was a good selection to choose from when I was there. I didn't know this, but the numbers you see on the bowling ball are the weights and these also had same weighted balls, but for different sized hands. I'm sure this is pretty standard for bowling and I am making myself sound like an idiot, but HEY, I learned something new and I've gone bowling several times before and never noticed it -- other than choosing the prettiest ball to bowl with (*insert rolling eye face emoji*). Really neat place as they have bowling lanes on each side of the bowling section. I didn't really walk around, but there also happens to be a bar, arcade games and I'm assuming a kitchen. Food and drinks can be enjoyed in your lane as I saw people nearby with drinks and food. Outside security guards makes one feel safe I suppose. Had a fun time here even though I didn't win the game. It literally took me round 3 to score some points, disappointed!
