The Best Cafes in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"One of the better cafés on the western edge of Downtown Montreal, this café owes its name to Shaughnessy Village, a small but historic neighbourhood located just steps away. Coffee beans, accessories, and a curated selection of merch are available in-store and online." - Daniel Bromberg

Google
I liked this cafe. There was a good selection of pastries and drinks, it seemed to be a good place to study judging from the number of people doing it. The service was really good and I enjoyed my London fog. The tables could have been a little cleaner but other than that it was good.

Google
Delicious filter coffee black is a dream come true at this cafe. The breakfast sandwich and pastries made our daily stop at this heavenly oasis all the more enjoyable. Thank you to the friendly folks working here for the kind service and great music. 10/10

Google
love this little cafe. the staff is cool and so nice to talk to. The atmosphere in this cafe is very pleasant. The music is really good too!! <3 The only thing i dislike is the matcha - not really tasting matcha - just milk... i sometimes try to ask to double the amount, but its not really to my liking. But nothing beats how homey and cozy shaughnessy cafe makes me feel.

Shaughnessy Cafe is a hidden treasure! Their coffee is rich and aromatic, the baristas are friendly and skilled, and the cozy atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to relax or catch up with friends. A must-visit for coffee enthusiasts seeking a delightful and satisfying experience!

Google
Nice little place for a good cup of beverage. We were in the area to watch a movie and had some time to kill and this place is just behind the Forum. We went for a Hot Chocolate with Soy Milk. They have a few other non-dairy options. But they could have some more vegan options to eat. We went for this power ball made of sesame, apricot, dates, covered with scraped coconut. It was good. The staff is good and friendly. Definitely recommended!!

Google
It's a nice comfortable Cafe that feels tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but at the same time, it is only 1 block away from all necessary amenities. Subway station, mall, movie theater, etc. This results in a very convenient location, providing people with a great balance of environment.

Google
I loved it here, what a cool cozy cafe! Nicely crafted flat white, breakfast sandwich went well with vibrant music playing in the cafe. Plenty of place to work on your laptop, while starring out at the cute succulents by the window.

Yelp
Very cute and nice option for coffee in the Shaughnessy Village neighborhood! Super conveniently located right on the corner of Rue Lambert Closse. The drinks are really cute, especially the hot coffees with the coffee art. I opted for an Iced Americano which was very good! Solid quality coffee. Service was great too!

Yelp
The place is in a sort of half basement and it gives out all the right vibes. I ordered a matcha latte. It is okay, it is on the line between to milky and just right. It is unique enough to be a cute date spot after a walk. It has a nice terrace it could be a good summer hangout spot too!

Yelp
Has been my favorite for years but this week am getting bitter Starbucks-style coffee. Awful.

Yelp
Wow! What a cute little cafe in Montreal. I ordered the latte and cinnamon bun roll and my friend ordered tea with the almond croissant. The coffee was great and wow that almond croissant is no joke! If you want to have first grabs of their pastries then make sure you come here early in the morning. If you're looking for a cozy place to study, read or catch up with a friend then I highly recommend this cafe!

Yelp
Coffee was ok. Got the job done, woke me up. However there was no real good options. They charge me 7$ for a vanilla latte lol ok ma'am. Didn't even have pumpkin spice during October, or a muffin to nibble on. Maybe if they had more options to offer they wouldn't have to charge so much for a coffee. You can go around the corner to a cafe named "Cafe Maison Ronde" and get a 4.31$ late. A 7$ coffee is OBSURD for a cafe that has no food options or any coffee options in a place labeled as a cafe!

Yelp
Great coffee shop Near the old forum / Atwater Croissants and espresso Very very good

Yelp
Quaint little café serving very good coffee and fresh bagel sandwiches. Good candidate for a regular neighborhood spot.

Yelp
I love this place. The coffee is very consistent and the savoury baked goods are excellent. It's got some fancy locally made artisanal drinks. I had an amazing cider and my son loved the beer. I go every time I'm in Montreal.

Yelp
Perfect place to study on a rainy day. Great wifi and service! The barista was super friendly and the music in the cafe was soothing. Glad they opened up in the neighbourhood! WIll be back to get some caffeine and do some work. Big windows for light and super cute interior decor. They have a loyalty card program as well.

Yelp
Shaughnessey is a really lovely cafe. The owner is usually around and is very nice. The staff are really nice and knowledgeable, they make you feel comfortable as soon as you walk in. They also have a really stunning selection of alcohol (wine and beer mostly) and good snacks to take home too. I came here every day before getting back to making coffee and home, I still buy fresh coffee grounds from there, they have a big variety of Canadian coffee roasters. 10/10 good spot.

Yelp
Located in the spot of the recently close down greasy spoon late night eats restaurant is now a newly renovated morning pick me up Cafe. Passed by on my walk to work for a quick double espresso in house. (3$ - which is fairly priced and to go options available) and loved it! Choices of coffee (at the moment Fernwood Canadian roaster from BC) , tea and viennoiserie.

Yelp
Was a bit pricy for an Americano, but overall it's a nice cafe. It's very isolated as it's in a basement, but the windows really open up the place. The plants also give it a homey touch which is great. Nice place to relax if you need it.

Yelp
I was in Montreal to visit my grandparents, and one sunny Tuesday morning I saw it fit to scout out the local specialty coffee scene. A quick Google Maps search led me to Shaughnessy Café, a cute direct origin cafe that had an insta-worthy interior. If I end up moving to Montreal, this will be my go-to! The barista was super friendly, the coffee was delicious, and the decor was pleasing to the eye. They also were selling used books and gave free local arts magazines. If you want a small cafe experience in Westmount, this is the place!

Yelp
I wanted to go to this café on a first date. We meat through the hinge dating app. She studies taxes and stuff. I'm in software engineering and she responds, "engineering is a trend". After being sad and disturbed by that comment the friendship between us slowly died. Shout out to Kelly. So next opportunity I get, with more quality people, I'll definitely try your cafe; looks sweet.

Yelp
It's a famous coffee shop located next to Atwater station and it's really popular for students because of the location and the affordable coffee. There's also a small terrace outside the coffee shop and people chill there on a sunny day. I really like the service at the cafe since the barista was friendly and prepared really good (and really strong) allongé for me. The most iconic piece of decor in this minimalistic coffee shop is the mosaic tabletop, it's really exotic and adored by Instagrammers. There are also a bunch of travel pictures and a shelf full of Lonely Planet travel books, I guess the owner really likes traveling and wants to share this passion with the clients. In sum, come enjoy your time in this lovely cafe, you will not regret your choice!

Yelp
Great new coffee stop in an area that badly needed something cool. A place to get a good coffee and have a meeting or get some work done. The place is completely redone and thank God it needed it. No insult to the old Moe's ( I, like many enjoyed a late night or early morning there) but it was time. Happy to have good option in the area. Thx guys

Yelp
I'm so glad this spot just opened up in my neighborhood! As someone who lives in the area and works from home, I know we desperately needed a cute, cool, go-to cafe downtown. The staff working on a Sunday morning were very nice and perfectly bilingual. Lattes were great and reasonably priced. Decor is minimal and inviting and I can't wait to sit on their terrasse come summer.

Yelp
Amazing coffee!! One of those places where the latte is better than cappuccino. Their beans have lot of strong and bitter flavours which blend well with the high milk percentage of a latte. The milk is steamed smoothly and the taste is velvety to its best. You'll like this place if you like the coffee at Pikolo. It's near Concordia area so lots of students are a regular here. It's a great study spot, very quiet . The spots near the window are bright with natural light but the tables more on the inside can get a bit dark. They have outdoor seating for the summer. Clean bathroom. Gets very busy during noon.

Yelp
Awesome addition to the neighborhood, we needed a great coffee place. Friendly staff, great atmosphere and a nice selection of tea as well. A good spot to read, study or catch up. Only downside is that their pastry/food items are very limited.

Yelp
A cute half-underground cafe. The Latte tasted good! The staffs here are so nice! I also like the decorations inside. I think it's a good place to chat with friends. The background music is kind of loud, so maybe it's a little bit nosy for studying.

Yelp
Really nice spot that opened up recently downtown. The decor is minimal and simple, no complaints here except maybe switch the tungsten bulbs for daylight (a battle I will seemingly never win in Montréal). Great espresso-based drinks with a nice ambience, perfect for working or a casual meeting downtown. Their baristas have always been super friendly without the attitude, which is a nice plus. They also carry Fernwood coffee which, as far as I know, is only available here in Montreal. Overall, a really nice alternative to Myriade or Melk just a little bit further West.

Yelp
Welcoming place, smell so good, nice service, windows all around, coffee, chai , tea and more available. Few tables but not to crowd.

Yelp
I live in Shaughnessy Village and this cafe, while very nice, is too expensive and closes too early for my lifestyle.
google avatar

Géraldine J.

Yelp
Entre deux courses, je me suis arrêtée pour goûter leur café et une chocolatine. Winner! J'ai adoré et le service était très sympa!
google avatar

Serge N.

Yelp
Their cold brew isn't the most affordable but staff is generally pretty nice. Cool spot to work if you're looking to avoid the typical Starbucks crowd

Yelp
I love the selection of baked goods that are available at Shaughnessy cafe. The interior is very clean inside, and there are a lot of plants by the windows (good place to take instagram photos). The cafe is quiet and a good place to study. Their filter coffee is quite delicious as well. I tried their date bar and raspberry scone. Their date bar is a must-try, but their scone kind of disappointed me. The scone was cooked perfectly, but there was not enough flavour or raspberries inside the scone itself.

Yelp
Lovely. Friendly, clean & stylish, delicious coffee, free wifi. We happened upon this place upon arriving in Montreal and it is such a nice find. If this place was in my city I would be glad to be able to be a regular.

Yelp
Bright space. Friendly staff. Good latté.

Yelp
I had perfect dose of americano The staff there was very welcoming also they are selling great stuffs for barista (kettle/cups) Also nice place to read or study definitely recommended

Robert P.

Yelp
Located right in-between two Starbucks, Shaughnessy Cafe offers a great alternative for my morning cup of coffee. The service was great, the space is open, and the coffee was also good. $2.75 for a large coffee (though their larges are mediums by large coffee retailer standards). If you're living in the Shaughnessy area like I am, consider making this cafe your go to spot and avoid the long lines, over crowdedness, and homogeny of Starbucks.

Mimi M.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this coffee shop for a while now and finally got to it to do some studying. The music and overall ambiance are great to help you focus, the baristas are very friendly and helpful and their americano was amazing! I also got a butter croissant (freshly out of the oven, I couldn't resist the smell). Will definitely go back again!

Stuart A.

Yelp
Solid third wave coffee. Excellent americano. One of the best in montreal. In the conversation with Monopole, Finca and Differance.
