The Bay Area’s Most Exciting Restaurant Openings | Eater SF

"The newest permanent popup at Forage Kitchen is a Jordanian-inspired shawarma shop run by a former Noosh sous chef; the specialty is chicken shawarma sliced from a towering vertical spit, available as a wrap or piled atop French fries with garlic sauce and pickled vegetables." - Luke Tsai

Google
The service and food was excellent. The price is decent for the quality of the authenticity of the food. They have original flavorful tastes and classic dishes. The chicken shawarma gyro was missing a side of pickles or tomato cut up but overall very very delicious. The size of the portions are reasonable for the price. I would recommend a male worker come outside to check on the customers sitting on the patio areas because there are transients outside that make sitting out there uncomfortable. The one man had a stick hitting the ground very aggressively in the parking lot of shell. And another wondered into the patio area shirtless and stood in the fartherest corner acting possessed talking to himself. It didn't bother me so much because I'm from here and that just regular but for new people it would be awkward. This is a very nice and clean place to eat . I enjoyed the food and I definitely recommend eating here.

I visited Shawarma Stop on a recent work trip to Houston, and overall had a pretty good experience. The atmosphere inside is great — modern, relaxed, and very clean, which I appreciated right away. I ordered the Arabian Chicken Shawarma sandwich, and while it was decent, it felt like it was missing some seasoning and could’ve had a bit more flavor. The dolma, on the other hand, was really good and one of the highlights of the meal. The tzatziki was okay, but similar to the shawarma, it was a little bland for my taste. I finished with the baklava, which was excellent — fresh, sweet, and definitely worth trying. Overall, Shawarma Stop has a great vibe and solid food, with a few dishes that could use a little more seasoning. I'd still go back, especially for the dolma and baklava.

I was excited to finally try out this place after passing by it so many times. It is located next to a Shell gas station in its own section. I ordered a falafel sandwich instead of a combo since it would have been about $17.50 without taxes. Once I got it, instead of using pita bread, they used a flour tortilla. It wasn't a bad substitute, but it tells you about how much they actually care about authenticity or their food. Once I got it, instead of the falafel I ordered, it was made with gyro. I went to the cashier who merely replied it would take another 10 minutes to get the right one. No apologies, not even a simple, "sorry for the mistake." After finally giving it a chance, I don't think I will return. These kinds of prices and lack of quality or service is the reason why fewer people are going out to eat in the U.S.

Google
I tried Shawarma Stop and it was a big disappointment. The food quality is poor and the prices are way too high for what you get. The shawarma doesn’t taste like real shawarma at all — they honestly don’t seem to know how to make it properly. For what they charge, you’re better off getting beef or chicken tacos for five dollars that taste much better and actually feel worth the money. Don’t waste your time or your money here.

Google
I was looking for something light and decided to give these guys a shot. Went with the gyro wrap it was served hot, speedy, THICK shawarma sauce. Loved it, definitely coming back

Google
It was almost midnight and I was hungry without many options open so I got this delivered from a third party delivery service and wow I was shocked because it exceeded my expectations !! The chicken shawarma plate had so much flavor and the kebob with hummus was amazing too! The rice itself is very flavorful. I loved the sauces they gave too, a garlic and tahini sauce (I'm not sure if they come together or only one per chicken/kebob order). The to go box did get upside down from the delivery service so the picture looks off but the food was delicious and I'll try them again soon!!

Google
A beautiful and quiet place with very delicious food, and the staff are very friendly. An amazing experience highly recommended.

Google
Fantastic. My delivery order arrived very fast. Great chicken and the rice was very soft. Highly recommend. They did not give me fork though. But anyways it was very nice.

Yelp
Despite a lot of the bad reviews, I ordered door dash for lunch yesterday and it was pretty decent to me. I got the Chicken Shawarma wrap with side order of grape leaves, baklava and mango juice. The wrap was ok. I didn't think it was too dry and they gave extra garlic sauce that I dipped it in. It could use maybe a little chopped lettuce and tomato to spruce it up. For me the best thing was the grape leaves! I really enjoyed them. It came 5 in an order for $6. (This dish alone made me give 4 star instead of 3). The baklava could have used a little more syrup so it was ok. And I liked the mango juice.

Yelp
Going in I didn't have high expectations but, this place was actually great! I got a gyro and fries and it was really good. The gyro was large, had a great ratio of ingredients, and came with tzatziki and garlic sauce. I also enjoyed the fries, they were seasoned well. This is a great place if you need to grab something quick on the go. The staff there was also very friendly.

Yelp
Decided to try Shawarma for the 1st time. What better way than to go to this location. I've read bad reviews about this place but I wanted to give them a chance and try them out. Well the food was really good. I got 2 sandwiches, Falafel and Gyro. The Falafel was a bit dry for my liking but the flavor was surprisingly good. The Gyro was really good. I was surprisingly ok with pickles in my sandwich, it really went well with the gyro and the tzatziki. The customer service was very good. It was only 2 people when I went there and the food was done in a timely manner. One of my sandwiches came with fries and a drink. The fries was perfectly crispy and seasoned. This is a very beautiful place to say the least. The decor isn't expensive but beautiful. I will be back soon.

Yelp
Convenient location in museum district, across from hermann park. It's in the same lot as the gas station and stays open late. Definitely a decent, casual spot. The food was ok though. Took a while to get our chicken with rice, which was also a bit salty. It's overall not a bad pick if you're looking to satisfy a late night craving.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for a long time, and I hate to say it, but it's fallen off. The aesthetic upgrade is definitely nice, but the food quality has severely declined. The service is sort of slow, but perhaps that was based on the time of day. However, there was a steady stream of customers during the later hours. Food: For the price I paid, I felt scammed. There was barely any chicken on the wrap, the lettuce was white, and there was too much bread. My husband ordered a salad, and it was literally the lettuce they use for garnish on a platter. We definitely didn't finish it. The sauce they give you is pretty good, but that certainly leaves a lot to be desired. Overall: This spot has fallen off badly!! I don't see myself returning.

Yelp
I drove by this area daily and finally able to stop by. They have a spacious patio and the inside is nice considering in a gas station. Food wise was nahhhh... and price range is consider high for a place like this (fastfood option)

Yelp
Great spot for Shawarma, chicken tenders and smoothies connected to a convenience store / gas station and open until 1am most days. The owner was also saying that they used to serve and make chocolate three years ago (hence the "chocolatier" in their sign) but they stopped. Small but cozy interior as well. Recommended!

Yelp
Got the buy one get one chicken kebab platter with hummus, rice, side salad, and pita through Uber eats. The food was a bit americanized, but couldn't complain for the amount and value. I liked their garlic sauce. Not sure if I'd go back if they didn't have the deal though.

Oday S.

Yelp
The food was terrible , I couldn't even finish it I ordered a chicken shawarma wrap and the chicken was dry asf and it has non cooked meat inside It's not worth it at all !!
google avatar

Melenco G.

Yelp
The service is horrible here. They give the wrong food for my order and I pointed it out to them, then they put lots of salt on my kabob and then they also added a screw to my salad. Do not eat here.

Yelp
Here for a routine MDA hospital visit for my husband , we stopped at this very small corner cafe - I ordered a chicken Shawarma - side of beets and Baklava for dessert. Food was freshly prepared and full of flavor - truly enjoyed every bite of my meal. The baklava square was good, the baklava roll was not as good in my opinion... I will return again .... I have had better baklava , I will go back again to try another entree. We purchased combo , but forgot to get our drinks!!! If you try this place out, I suppose you get the drinks out of cooler, they do not give them to you. Just FYI

Yelp
Up until a few months ago, Shawarma Stop easily one of my most frequented late night spots in all of H-Town. This place was swimming with potential: a fairly extensive outdoor setup, a pretty good array of quality foods, and open super late. Since it shares the space with a gas station convenience store, it's the perfect spot to grab a bite after pumping some gas. Then, new ownership took it over and it's been a steady decline ever since. For folks who were familiar with the previous operation, there have been a number of changes: -- They're no longer open as late. It's no longer a 4AM destination but instead a place that closes just before midnight. (Last order at 11:30PM) -- A lot of menu items are no longer being served. Fondue. Burgers. Crepes. Waffles. Many of which exist on the menu but are no longer being served in actuality. In fact, the fondue / sweets are is completely empty now. -- Much of the (Lebanese) teas are also no longer served. Now they've brought in a Community Coffee iced tea dispenser; tackily sitting in the corner. It was a little sticky when I last used it. (i.e. someone needs to clean this station often). -- The buzzers are gone. Now it's just call in and order and that's it. -- At one point the hookahs were an attraction, but I don't see any offered anymore. For the food that is served, it's a hodgepodge of mediocrity. The shawarma wrap that I used to love has now become a mushy, flavorless concoction. The meat didn't taste too fresh and the sauce was a little overbearing. After a few bites, it got a little gross. The same goes for the lamb. Hummus was also a huge thumbs down. My mixed grill platter was probably the best thing I had from here, but even at $23 for a modest portion, was not memorable. I do genuinely feel for the people working here. Part of me wants to sympathize with the sinking ship, but the execution is extremely disappointing. While I hope they can rebound, I'm not likely to muster another visit here for a long while.

Yelp
My husband and I eat a lot of Mediterranean food, and there are a lot of options near our home. We usually get gyro king or gyro hut, but seeing as this place is so close I figured I'd try them out as well. Menu options are very similar to above restaurants, and we got gyro over rice and salad. The gyro meat is pretty good- more heavy on cinnamon than most places which I actually like. Food was done relatively quickly and service was good. Their prices are a couple dollars higher than other places and overall I liked them just a bit less. The food here is fine but I think I will stick with my usual spots for Mediterranean. Of note, I did see a sign that says they serve halal for those who are interested.

Yelp
This place has HORRIBLE customer service!! I ordered on Door Dash and they sent my drink IN THE BAG with my food. It spilled all over the bag and my food. I also specifically called and asked for extra garlic sauce and they STILL only sent ONE garlic sauce. I also received NO PITA BREAD with my order even though the menu clearly says that the meal comes with Pita Bread. The food here is also not great. The lentil soup was very watery and way too salty. The chicken was dry, and the rice was not fresh. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. I will NEVER order from here again.
google avatar

Maria S.

Yelp
I was working in the area and found this place where I figured they'd have falafel wraps. You order at the counter. They have a mini cafeteria style choice of Middle Eastern veggie and meat items. The falafel sandwich was tasty. They have a few desserts including baklava. The place is small and connected to a gas station and therefore share the bathrooms. They needed cleaning. I'd go back to have a veggie sampler plate. Check out the gorgeous blue tea set they have on display. I should have photographed it.

Yelp
The staff was great and everyone there very kind and friendly also the food is very delicious specially the hummus, kabab, rice and tabouli. Thank you guys

Yelp
Read all the bad reviews..service was good and the lamb shank was the best I ever had...the rice is seasoned to perfection..this is now my lamb go to spot...do yourself a favor and try for yourself
google avatar

Madi M.

Yelp
I would say they make good chicken shawarma and cheeseburger in overall. I would prefer kofta plate but I would have to wait 12-15 min for that, so we chose wraps and burger for a child. Taste was good but chicken was dryish. It was not juicy at all and sauce was not as light, I assume they use lots of mayo instead of yogurt or labne. Was nice little stop spot for a quick bite.
google avatar

Tuan T.

Yelp
Holy shit their chicken (over rice) was so dry. Thankfully their salad was helpful in that aspect but yikes.
google avatar

Ivy L.

Yelp
Tried this place for dinner one night and got the gyro beef shawarma sandwich with fries. The wrap was crispier than other places, which I kinda liked cause it made it different. But if you like the pillowy soft pita, this isn't it. The meat was seasoned well and had a nice flavor to it. Tender, not dry. Though it was on the lighter side. There's not too much sauce so even though the meat was not dry, the whole shawarma sandwich as a whole was a little lacking. Fries were crispy. Overall, decent gyro beef shawarma sandwich, though not the best in the area.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
Always solid; I love their shawarma's. Have never tried their meat and sides plates but it always lllmd good...
google avatar

Angelina G.

Yelp
Had the falafel sandwich, it was alright but it was not the traditional wrap that I'm used to in Europe, maybe it's an American thing. Adding a can of soda and a small box of fries to your "sandwich" costs $6, which is a rip off in my opinion. Wouldn't recommend
google avatar

Moby M.

Yelp
Amazing shawarma. I think I found my shawarma spot in Houston. Cleaned, beautiful setting with delicious food, desert and coffee. I swallowed the food because it was just too good. I highly recommend this.

Jennifer D.

Yelp
I go here because they have a car charging station. It's just a bonus that their selection of vegetarian food rocks my socks. Counter service; staff is kind and helpful. It's attached to a gas station and has the vibe of a cheap college cafe.
google avatar

Anna B.

Yelp
We got the bogo deal which made it more worth it but the food quality was subpar. Kind of tasted like a frozen gyro dinner I had recently. The ambience is pretty cool though! They have a cute patio, greenery area and it's across from Hermann park.
google avatar

Vik P.

Yelp
Nestled at the end of a gas station on a street full of good Mediterranean options. Shawarma Stop is definitely a good choice if you don't have the time to wait at Gyro hut or tetris park your vehicle at M&M's. Although, I was on my way to M&M's, but ended up here due to road blockage. Looked online seen decent reviews of another location decided to give it a try. Upon entering notice that they provided many different items...coffee/crepes/waffles/ice cream/fruit salads/chocolate & Mediterranean food including their desserts like baklava. Very well rounded. So I came in strictly to add some gyro to the salad I had waiting at home. Ordered a meat only plate which completely surprised me to the amount of gyro they offered. It was more than enough for 2 meals and definitely spruced up my salad. Definitely will be back to try other items.
google avatar

Candice R.

Yelp
I'm so glad I drove by and saw this place is open!! I've been waiting FOREVER to try it. It's really good, so I'll definitely be back soon
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
Delicious gelato! Their gelato was made in house. I especially like the chocolate flavor. There were syrup options and add ons available.
google avatar

Kati S.

Yelp
This is literally my favorite place for lunch. At the mention of Shawarma Stop, my mouth starts to water as I visualize the hummus beautifully prepared alongside my perfectly crisp and chewy chicken wrap. I can't say anything about any other food because if given the option, I would literally survive off of the chicken shawarma and hummus.
google avatar

Montrel L.

Yelp
They know what they're doing with Shawarma. In fact, so far their beef shawarma is possibly the best that I have had, but I swear everytime the customer service at the counter is poor to mediocre. The food though? Delicious!

Ke J.

Yelp
Custom service is horrible. I tired paying with Apple Pay and he refused me service but they will happy take the order over door dash? How interesting.

Deja T.

Yelp
amazing food, i usually get the chicken wings but they now have tenders and the lamb wrap is really good too. the whole staff is super nice and quick to make the food. the low background music, patio space, and cool lights make it a nice vibe if you want to sit and eat too. I would give 10 stars if I could.

Alireza S.

Yelp
We came on Thursday but we feel ate the food from last Saturday, lol absolutely low quality, this is not the place you look for shawarma wraps, The food are not like the pictures they put as advertising

Muhuammad R.

Yelp
We ordered shawarmas, two chicken, 1 beef. The chicken was fine, it was cooked nicely. The beef on the other hand was burnt, hard, and it has a weird smell. We called them to tell them about it and they shut the phone on our faces. Very unprofessional on their part.
google avatar

Ruwan A.

Yelp
This place has so much potential but we were really let down by the quality of the food. The location & aesthetic of the restaurant are great, but the food was subpar at most. The shawarma had no flavor and its no where near being authentic, so if you're looking for an authentic experience this place ain't it. We also ordered crepes for our kids and the crepe was so over cooked what we couldn't even cut through it since it was so crunchy. The employee was gracious enough to remake it, but it still wasn't that great.

Zenab C.

Yelp
Would not recommend. I ordered from this place only to have them cancel my entire order. Very disappointed, and on top of that, it took 3 days to refund my money. Never coming back here again. The quality of the food doesn't look that good either and this is coming from someone who was brought up on middle eastern food. Try another place.
google avatar

Susan K.

Yelp
WOW! I usually go there for a FANTASTIC chicken shawarma sandwich. Today I walked in...and OMG there is now a whole buffet to choose from. I did get my sandwich (which is amazing BTW) and some fried cauliflower and some mozzarella spinach. This is the place to go!!! The menu has been expanded to even include breakfast...crepes no less! Who would have thought wonderful comforting food would be found in a gas station! Go there - you will be amazed...and you will return! YUM!

Irma C.

Yelp
aside from the overpriced flour tortilla with "chicken shawarma" my husband almost had an emergency dental visit! Who puts a half chicken leg BONE in a shawarma Sándwich?! this is not a shawarma place, I'll drive 30 extra minutes to Shawarma king next time. You lost a customer on the first try....and yes I have receipts and photos.
google avatar

Hussam G.

Yelp
Best shawarma I had in the US!! I've tried places in DC, Los Angeles, Boston, New York, and New Orleans. This by far the best. Their garlic sauce is unbelievable. And the host is extremely hospitable and nice. I also should mention their desserts that are phenomenal. They have stuff with fruits, Nutella, and Kinder. It's a MUST if you're visiting Houston
google avatar

Summer M.

Yelp
I have yet to have authentic shawarma in Houston and was craving it today and Shawarma Stop did not disappoint. I was surprised this place was empty on a Friday lunch hour, maybe due to the construction going on around the corner. Don't let the fact that it is located on the end of a gas station fool you. The restaurant has a beautiful exterior and even nicer interior with clean white marble tabletops and beautiful middle eastern wall mosaic. Now for the best part, the food. There was a pretty big selection of shawarma sandwiches, platters and side dishes / appetizers but the true test is to try the chicken shawarma. And boy was I so happily surprised! They make their shawarma with authentic shrak bread (special thin pita bread) as opposed to those made with thick regular pita bread or even tortilla bread (yup, huge difference)! The filling is simple and also authentic, flavorful chicken, garlic tahini sauce and Arabic style pickles. The sandwich is also grilled and served wrapped up in a pretty authentic way. The combo came with fries, which were seasoned and super delicious. My quest for authentic chicken shawarma outside the Middle East is finally complete!
google avatar

Kerris S.

Yelp
Very friendly service. Me and my husband ate the 6 piece chicken wings with fries and mango strawberry drink. We really enjoyed out meal but especially loved the drinks. We would come back.
google avatar

Kenneth C.

Yelp
Nice service but horrific food. Area was well lit and very clean. Wouldn't stop here again.

Toni B.

Yelp
The service at this restaurant is unbelievable! I have been coming to this restaurant for the last two years buying food for myself and the homeless. Today they called the police on me and told me I was not allowed any longer because I spend to much time there and I was in the phone and it was to loud although no one was outside besides me. I use the place as a refuge from an abusive relationship. But while I was there I purchased food each time and also bought for the local homeless people that I have befriended. Today they called the police on me and told me I was no longer welcomed in there establishment even though I sat outside and would typically work. The staff originally was okay with me doing that because I would buy food but they told me today that I am no longer considered a customer because I sit there too long. I am very sad about this and emotional because I have supported their business for 2yrs without a problem and the Hispanic boss during the day called the police on me when before he was always cool with me. I discourage any person of African American decent to visit this place because it's all men of Hispanic and meditarainian decent who don't care nothing about us besides taking our money even when they may getting pennies in the dollar for their work. I literally asked them how can they let homeless people sit up there' even when they are still open not buy anything and they simply said because they are homeless....meanwhile tv is missing from the wall because homeless people stole it and they had a herion addict working there that tried to rob them. I denounce this business and all that has to do with it. They are racist! All OF THEM!!!
google avatar

Bob M.

Yelp
It's okay. Not bad but nothing to brag about. Food was kinda bland. Convenient to the park

Steve A.

Yelp
Over rated, both shawarma was okay , falafel is alright. Very small portions, falafel plate for 13.49 that have only 5 mini falafels and a spoon of coleslaw and fries. Shwarma was wrped using a tortilla bread . Sandwiches price shouldn't be more then 4.99 small portions

Eden S.

Yelp
Chicken shawarma was pretty good , order of fries is large so be mindful of that. Fries were ok. Triple chocolate waffle was ok. Overall I think it's over priced for quality.
google avatar

Arko B.

Yelp
This place used to be a small corner in a gas station serving heavenly Shawarma wraps. But post-covid and post-renovations, this is now serving revolting food. Either the management or the chef has changed. Instead of juicy, smoky, subtly-spiced shawarma wrapped in soft pita bread, their wrap is now a bland, flat pulled chicken (as good as boiled with no spices), wrapped in a thin bread. On top of that, they toasted the wrap after filling which caused the garlic sauce to break/split making it oily and completely unappetizing! This shop is now a total disaster.
google avatar

Natalie T.

Yelp
The food is decent and it's open late but if they're serving more than 3 people be prepared to wait. I placed a to go order and drove there in 15 min and still waited 20 min. for my food. No apology, no acknowledgement. Trash service for sure.
google avatar

Omar A.

Yelp
Most authentic Arabic chicken shawarma in Houston right now. That's what you should order if you go there!
