The Best Hangover Cure Restaurants in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Whether it comes wrapped in pita, saj flatbread, baguettes, collard leaf, whatever — the spit-roasted beef from this local chain can be found downtown, up north in Laval or out west in Vaudreuil-Dorion. Those not looking for sandwich options can opt for the more greasy options of shawarma mac and cheese, salads, poutine, and “sushi” platters of small sandwiches to share with bigger hungover groups." - JP Karwacki

Where to Eat and Drink Around the Bell Centre | Eater Montreal

"Those who thought Boustan had the shawarma game all locked up downtown are wrong: Shawarmaz has emerged as a worthy competitor for shredded rotisserie meat wrapped up in a pita or on a platter. Easily the most fast-food leaning option on this map, it’s open until 1 a.m. daily (3 a.m. Friday and Saturday)." - Tim Forster

Google
I tried the full platter at Shawarmaz, and it was absolutely worth it! A large, satisfying portion with tender, well-seasoned shawarma, perfectly complemented by the flavorful potatoes. We were a group of 6 people and it was sufficient for all of us ! That was the best part ❤️❤️❤️The portion size was generous, making it a great meal for a hearty appetite. The potatoes were crispy on the outside, soft inside, and packed with spices that added an extra kick. The platter also came with fresh salad, creamy garlic sauce, and warm pita, making every bite delicious. Overall, a great value for the price, and I’d definitely go back for another round. Highly recommended for shawarma lovers!

Absolutely loved our visit to Shwarmaz on St. Catherine! The food was fresh, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned — every bite was delicious. The service was outstanding, 100% top-notch from start to finish. Friendly staff, quick service, and clean environment. Highly recommend if you’re in downtown Montreal and craving something tasty!

Google
Absolutely amazing experience at,Shawrmaz! The food was incredibly fresh and full of flavour — the shawarma was honestly one of the best I’ve ever had. The staff were friendly, polite, and professional, and the restaurant itself was clean, modern, and welcoming. Service was fast and the quality of the food was top-notch. Huge thanks to the Shawrmaaz team for such a great experience. I’ll definitely be back and will be recommending it to everyone! 👌🥙🔥

Google
We were on the way to the airport so we ordered some food to go and some to eat at the restaurant. Realizing we were late, we wanted to leave and asked the lady at the counter for some to go boxes and cutlery. The lady at the counter became genuinely sad like I asked her for her car keys or something. Your staff carried an attitude like they were serving free gold. Just an FYI, you can absolutely serve this basis tasteless shawarma in Quebec because people wouldn't know what to expect; try serving this in Vancouver and you'd get some hard reality check.

Google
Ordered the 1/2 kg familiale platter—everything was super fresh and delicious. Clean space, family-friendly vibe, and a small dine-in area. The owners are kind, respectful, and give honest recommendations. Highly recommend! P.S. Don’t miss the potatoes—they’re amazing!

Google
Wanted a quick meal and saw Shawarmaz. Easy to walk in, hard to decide between all the choices of sandwiches, Saj (wraps), bowls, salads, or poutines with chicken or beef. I got a wrap filled with mixed beef and chicken, a nice dab of hot sauce, and lots of veggies fixings, and it was all griddled at the end to crisp it up. Super yum!

Google
The price is reasonable, the food is very delicious. Plus tax one person around $22, the service is very good. They also offer the beverage without limit. Highly recommended this restaurant.

Google
I was a tourist to Montréal and tried this place based on the hype, it did not disappoint. The servings were overabundant. I couldn’t finish my two meat schawarma platter. The meat was very tasty and on point for cooked on that vertical spit thing. The platter sides are delicious. The restaurant seems newly renovated and was very clean. Service was excellent and cheerful even as the place was busy and lined up.

Yelp
Decent shawarmas. This place is busy and serves good dishes. Right at the main st Catherine street. Would recommend this place to anyone!
google avatar

Yelp
A good place for a basic shawarma or bowl. Staff are haggard (it's busy) but friendly and the food is good. Will it be here a while? Dunno, Ste Catherine feels ominous. But if it is stays here it's great to stop and grab a bite from.

Yelp
Shawarma is one of my favorite foods. I've been looking for good shawarma ever since leaving the Middle East where I lived and worked for a decade. And to be honest, I've never even come close to getting quality shawarma anywhere I've been. Even if a place says it's' authentic' or the 'best in the area', nothing ever came close to the shawarma I had. Well ladies and gentleman, we have a winner; Shawarmaz. This place is so good! As soon as I walked in and saw 9 guys running around making wraps, bringing out fries and slicing shawarma and the 3 shawarmas spinning on the fire, I knew it was gonna be awesome. And it was! I got the chicken shawarma, with roasted potatoes, buckwheat, cabbage, salad, and beets. Topped with spicy sauce and garlic sauce, this stuff was absolutely delicious. I got the large bowl and unrepentantly ate every last bite. I think I paid 19 Canadian for the large and though it felt a bit steep, I left 100% satisfied with my awesome meal. Five stars. Best shawarma I've had outside of the Middle East. Highly recommended.

Yelp
I enjoyed everything I had at Shawarmaz. I tried: poutine with beef was good falafel pita was good I'd be happy to go back.

Yelp
My mom needed to stop for a quick healthy meal in between walking around the city, so she got the medium size salade poulet (chicken) for $13.65. It was a very generous amount of food for the price and they gave plenty of chicken. Unfortunately, the chicken was dry. I'm thinking because it was very thinly sliced off the vertical rotisserie. Even though the flavor was good, lamb is the best meat to cook on the vertical rotisserie for texture. I ordered a side of falafel, four pieces for $5. The outside was super crispy in the middle it was not dry at all, maybe they use less parsley to keep it moist. All the ingredients were very fresh and the staff was really friendly and helpful with the options we can choose from. Very quick service as well.

Yelp
If you are looking for great middle eastern food with authentic flavors and great service, you must eat at this place.

Yelp
This is the BEST shawarma spot in the city! Everything is fresh and very flavourful and I love the option to add garlic sauce to the baguette bread. The chicken was roasted perfectly, the salads are fresh, and I love how they grill the cheese before putting it back into your sandwich. There's really nothing for me to critique! Service was quick, and the workers were pretty friendly as well. The restaurant was a casual vibe, with lots of seating. If you have any doubts, just try it. You'll be happy you did! EDIT: At this point, my husband and I have been here 4 times within the past 2 weeks, they're incredibly consistent, it always tastes just as good as the first time. Highly recommend getting a chicken shawarma baguette with extra cheese, all dressed.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent shawarma platter for a group of 10. Fast service and great people. The falafel was also phenomenal.
google avatar

Mag T.

Yelp
Reviews led me to try the restaurant but the food was horrible! Both the chicken and beef were lacking flavor and not what i expected. Staff was super nice and friendly but the food wasn't impressive at all. Best thing was the white garlic sauce.
google avatar

Michelle A.

Yelp
Not sure how this place has so many stars. Ordered a beef shawarma and a salad with beef. The common denominator that drove my rating was the beef. It was super dry and flavorless. It didn't really taste like beef. Maybe it had been sitting all day. Not really sure but super disappointed.
google avatar

Michelle Q.

Yelp
The line and smiling faces are earned! Stopped late at night and asked local what they order. Mixed Saj w fries. It was huge! Made right in front of customer so you can see the toppings and skill that lends itself to this amazing flavor explosion from first bite! Loved price point, food, and atmosphere from multi-generational families to groups of college kids thoroughly enjoying their evening!
google avatar

Igor S.

Yelp
Man this place hits the spot late night. Everything you hope for and want after an eventful night in Montréal. Garlic sauce is addictive. I had the mixed bomb and would get it again. Will keep trying this place as much as possible. Staff is super helpful and kind. Lots of college kids in here too.

Yelp
Nice staff. Chipotle style restaurant - mix of Shawarma and poutine. Nice Mediterranean flavors. Very sizeable portions - fed a family of five on three orders.
google avatar

Brandon W.

Yelp
It's not bad, in fact it's actually pretty good. But there's a lot of competition out there and I've found it better at other locations. Also the location is very hectic, loud and rushed ordering process.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
I came here for a quick lunch while on a work trip. Quick it was not, but in fairness it was very busy when I was there. If you have ever seen those places where it is really busy but the logistics and the process of the crew sings and it is amazing how effective they are? This is the opposite of that. First, the entire dining room was basically one long line with a table in the middle. I would not want to dine in as the noise and crowd took over the spot. I ordered a platter with a couple of side items. From the time the guy took my order to the time I checked out was about fifteen minutes but the guy made most of my plate immediately. When I got to the register I definitely got things that weren't mine but I wasn't the only one. There were many sandwiches and nobody had been careful about customizations and which was which. When I got to my room to eat, the pita with hummus and the tabouleh were good. The falafel was very dark (over cooked) and dry as the desert. If the food was good, the price would be a good value but I would not go back.

Yelp
Yes it's a chain and it's got a funny name (at least to me). Walked in for the first time on a recommendation from a colleague and we certainly got there just in time. After I perused the menu and stopped my glands to stop salivating I looked over to see the line and 20 people were now behind me. This place is all about FALAFEL and SHAWARMA. Perfectly cooked, ready to serve portions in small, medium, large and extra large tortilla looking things (I think it may be called lavash). Since it was my first time I tried a poulet / chicken large sandwich and it was quite tasty. I would have liked for them to have more variety on the salad accompaniments but nonetheless it was all about the meat, the tahini sauce and the harissa (spicy). And this place delivered! Will definitely visit next time I am in the land of the 514!
google avatar

Jalal B.

Yelp
These guys know shawarma. Perfectly toasted pita and delicious, generously packed meat. Walked a little further to avoid long lines and it was very worth it. Good price, great food. I can still taste the pita's delicate crisp.
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful place for a delicious healthy and satisfying lunch. Prices excellent. Friendly staff.
google avatar

Yelp
Love their shawarma. Go there at least once a week for lunch. Their service is also very friendly and professional and fast. Nothing but string recommendations for this place!

William D.

Yelp
Visiting Montréal for the week and grabbed a great quick lunch here. Really tasty chicken shawarma, delicious sauces, fresh toppings, and most importantly a wonderfully friendly and welcoming staff. Perfect place to refuel for an afternoon of sightseeing.

Yelp
Always a must when I go to Montréal. I get the beef shawarma platter which is packed with delicious beef, rice, potatoes, pickles, and for salad you can choose beet salad, tabbouleh, and some other ones. You get garlic sauce and hummus on the side, but for an additional price, you can get more of those as I did. Very fresh, and service is quick and with a smile. Open late, and right in downtown Montréal. The ambiance is a fast food restaurant, no frills, but lots of seating and spacious.

Thomas A.

Yelp
Great restaurant with absolutely lovely staff, surfaces were clean, prices were good and staff were amazing and to top it all off the food was absolutely some of the best I've ever had. will be coming again
google avatar

Kevin Z.

Yelp
The sushi shawarma was perfectly seasoned and juicy, and the garlic sauce was awesome. Minus 1 star because 1) service took a while and 2) they forgot our falafels. Really delicious and giant portions though.
google avatar

Dawei L.

Yelp
Not bad and not good enough. Maybe I should have ordered a standard shawarma plate but end up testing this so called sushi shawarmaz. It's basicly a shawarma wrap but cut into pieces. Quite juicy nonetheless. Dont order the sushi, just order your standard shawarma.
google avatar

Yelp
Came in for a late bite on a Sunday night at around 10:30, when our original option was closed. This was also conveniently located a few blocks from our hotel. We ordered the Mix Plate ($12.49 - Slices of Marinated Chicken and Beef , with our Special Pomegranate and Tahini sauces on top. Served with rice, potatoes and salad with Garlic Sauce & Hummus. It's no 53rd and 6th from NYC, but it was pretty darn good! Make sure you ask for extra garlic sauce because that was what made the plate. One platter was shared amongst two people and it was enough. The inside of the store is also pretty clean, so that was a major plus!
google avatar

jas k.

Yelp
We got their mixed sharma (beef+chicken) plate and chicken shawarma plate. The meat is tender, warm and great tasting. Also, all the rest of sides were very good. We enjoyed the taboleh salad, humus, pickles, pita bread and rice. Overall the portion size was generous and very good. Would definitely recommend this place for getting ur shwarma fix.

Mikhael P.

Yelp
Favourite poutine in town! The rest of the food is okay, a lot of the times the meat is really dry. Service is quick too
google avatar

Rabbiya A.

Yelp
We decided to order Shawarmaz after seeing all the reviews & it's popularity on multiple forums including Yelp! We ordered the Magic Poutine that comes with Garlic Potatoes instead of regular fries & a Mix Shawarma Plate that included sliced beef & chicken with a side of Garlic Potatoes, Rice, Salad, Garlic Sauce & Hummus. We ordered through Uber Eats & received the food within 30 mins. Everything was excellent. Taste, quality of ingredients and portions were all 10/10. Would definitely recommend this spot!

Yelp
I continue to love this place, and it's been helping me get through these many months at home. In our past lives on Tuesdays we often went to the theater and then ate at Shawarmaz after. The pandemic version of that is ordering Shawarmaz on Uber Eats and watching a movie at home, and it's not a bad substitute! The food is consistently tasty and they have probably my favorite garlic potatoes and garlic sauce of all the similar restaurants in MTL. I much prefer the sauce to the one at Boustan. I also like that you can sub the salad for tabbouleh with no extra charge. Really love the spicy sauce they have which you can add on for I think $0.50. Every Tuesday we look forward to our mixed platters, probably too much (it's the simple pleasures during a pandemic really.) The chicken and the shawarma are both well spiced and cooked well. The other things they have are good too of course. The famous Poutine Magique was one of the first things I ate in Montreal and holds a special place in my heart. The sushi is lighter than a whole platter and also very tasty. When I want a little extra I also add on some sujuk because that was the first meat I had in a platter and it was excellent. In person service is very fast, and delivery service is no different. It's normally not more than 30 minutes between when I order it and when it arrives to my place near Place des Arts. Don't be thrown off by a restaurant in the back of a Subway sandwich shop. It's 100x better than Subway.
google avatar

Remi R.

Yelp
Best shawarma you can ever have in Montreal. May be best shawarma I have ever tasted in my life. Rapid service and they ask you exactly what you want in the sandwich. Their beef shawarma is the best. They also opened in saint Catherine near Saint Denis which is very convenient for me.
google avatar

Justine S.

Yelp
Not a bad place to get shawarma. The taste is different and portions are big enough to fill you up. They also make their special magic poutine. Prices are decent. A good place to eat if you're shopping downtown and want shawarma. Don't settle for basha or Amir.
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
I fell in love with the chicken sushi shawarma from Shawarmaz. It became one of my favorite places in Montreal. The chicken was cut fresh and cooked well paired with great sauces and a light wrap. The rice was also pretty good. For the price you really can't get a better spot!
google avatar

Jose D.

Yelp
Very good shawarma wraps and selection. But they need to figure out the efficiency of the preparing. The lines are huge and the guys overworked because nobody has given a thought to dividing the labor properly. Well . And then there's the people that bring their while brood for a family dinner but that's another matter.

Alan K.

Yelp
Amazing Shawarma, these guys really know what they're doing. If you're ever in the area make sure to stop by and get one you won't regret it!

Edward R.

Yelp
Shawarma was delicious- on point! I inadvertently ordered it on a baguette and realized my mistake only after they put all the toppings on it. I asked them if they could change my order to the classic shawarma wrap and they happily changed it. So service and food both awesome. If you're in the mood for an authentic shawarma this is the place for you.
google avatar

Amber H.

Yelp
Good spot just the food took over a hour. That poutine tho. If you're thinking of getting a large just do yourself a favour and get a small I couldn't even finish half.
google avatar

Daniel B.

Yelp
What an absolutely wonderful place! WOW! How is it that I've worked in the area for over 10 years now and for various reasons have never tried this Lebanese restaurant? For starters, the logo of the establishment conjures up an image of a chain restaurant, possibly from Ontario, serving up derivative food in an attempt to capitalize on the Montreal Amir/Basha/Boustan culture of Lebanese fast food. The fact that they are co-tenants in a bizarre 2 for 1 space with a Subway only reinforced that belief. I was very wrong. I've now read the reviews extolling the virtues of the "magic poutine". I'll definitely try it soon, but for today, I had to start with the standard mixed chicken and beef plate. I want to taste the individual ingredients and establish a baseline for the purpose of comparison. While the chicken and beef were likely not as perfect as Boustan can be on a good day, they were extremely tasty and quite moist. You can taste certain mild spicing in the meat (cardamom?) which sets it apart from other places and tells me that this food is prepared with love. The potatoes were perfect, and the basmati rice was a nice departure from the regular variety to which I'm accustomed. What I really enjoyed was the variety of fresh salads you get to choose from as well as the pickles, onions, and hot sauce you can opt to include in your plate. It's a really delicious plate with a homemade vibe to it. Finally, the most important element of any fast food Lebanese restaurant is their garlic sauce. This can make or break a Shawarma plate for me. The sauce here was really strong and delicious. It was also nice and fluffy rather than the mayonnaise-like consistency that Amir puts out. This restaurant is a hidden gem AND it's right next to my office. Score! I see a magic poutine in my not too distant future.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
This was a great find. They are a bit hidden from the street, but offer an excellent menu. Lebanese food is some of my favorite and this place did not disappoint. Pricing is more than reasonable as well!
google avatar

Yelp
Quick and easy shawarma place. Attached to a subway and a quick option for lunch. Had the mixed plate with beef and chicken. Add some potatoes and garlic sauce and I was good to go. Will go back.

Yelp
EAT HERE!! This place is epic!! Great bang for your buck and it's soooo good! After a few days of being in Montreal I began to miss NYC halal food. I found this place on recommendations and was a little confused as it is attached to a subway, but pay no mind to all of that!! This place is great and I wish I had an endless stomach to keep eating this food. I got the chicken shawarma plate which comes with chicken, rice, potatoes, a salad (I got tabouleh), hummus, and garlic sauce, and pita- ONLY $12!! I also got the magic poutine with beef and it was also excellent. I got it with spicy sauce, which isn't spicy but has a more potent flavor. It is a cool spin on a classic poutine and they add some cool crisps on top that really seals the deal. The meat is all super tender and tastes great. I love shawarma and this place made me very happy. Super friendly staff and you really can't go wrong coming here on your travels. Montreal has some pricey spots that are great, but they also have a lot of cheaper priced foods that are excellent as well. I barely ate 1/4 of each plate and I'm stuffed. Save some money and get some great halal here!
google avatar

Sheryl L.

Yelp
I'm a lover of shawarma but this is something else! There's a lot to choose from, from a normal chicken pita to a garlic potato poutine to a chicken sushi plate. I ordered a small chicken pita, a sushi plate that comes with garlic potatoes, The chicken Shawarma and the magic poutine.(yes,it's actually called the magic poutine) The chicken pita was good it comes in two sizes a small and a large pita because I took so much stuff I took the small which was really good with the sauce. Every bite had some chicken, onion and garlic sauce. The sushi place it was really good a little messy but still good. Unfortunately, the chicken Shawarma was a little dry. The garlic potatoes on its own we're missing a little bit of seasoning and juiciness and the chicken was a little bit dry. The main reason I give this place a five star is because of the magic poutine. You can have a choice of just beef or just chicken or a combination of both. The combination of the garlic potatoes with the tahini sauce and the special pomegranate sauce creates a delicious sweet yet tangy sauce! the crunchy pita bits that they put on top gives it a nice crunch and they put a handful making sure to go around the whole plate so you get some crunchiness in almost every bite! There are two sizes a small and a large. If you take a large you'll definitely have leftovers for the next day. The staff is very nice, if you have questions they take time to explain, they also don't get snippy when you ask for more garlic sauce or hummus. This place is open till 3am which makes it PERFECT for a midnight snack and definitely worth the drive for me to go from south shore to mtl !!!

Yelp
Dude this place is AMAZING, I really didn't expect this. Always been a Boustan guy for the 10+ years I've been visiting downtown MTL but tried this place after seeing the Yelp score and it definitely didn't disappoint Small portions but really well done, the sandwich is served in a super thin almost "crepe" like pita that gets nice and crispy Color me very impressed, blows away anything we've got in TO for sure

Yelp
I had my first experience eating poutine at Shawarmaz and I can't say that I'm a huge poutine fan now..... They have magical poutine on the menu, so obviously I had to try that. Get a small though, because a large is too big to even share between two people. The poutine starts off with huge scoops of fried potatoes, the pretty thick cut variety. Then comes the chicken, curds and gravy. The whole things is then topped off with a cream sauce and some chopped parsley. I'm not the hugest fan of parsley, but it definitely added some necessary color (and nutrients) to the meal. Overall, I thought the whole thing was very salty and the chicken was really dry. I couldn't finish even half of my portion.... The servers were.... efficient. Borderline rude, but I've kind of noticed that about more than a few places I've been to in Montreal, unfortunately. I don't think I'll be back. I don't even want to order poutine from anywhere else anymore after this experience.

Thomas F.

Yelp
Cheap, convenient, and tasty, so I have nothing to complain about. I came here multiple times during my four days in montreal and the service was quick. Definitely would recommend for anyone in the area looking for a quick bite to eat.
google avatar

Issan Z.

Yelp
We went there last night before movies, and I have to say that the Magic Poutine delivered in terms of flavor. The first few bites are pretty amazing, with the distinct taste of shawarma and tender chicken filling your mouth. The garlic potatoes really go well with cheese and gravy. And the cheese was squeaky, so you know its fresh! We both ordered a medium size plate, which was ambitious of us... The food quickly became too salty and overwhelming. We each finished about half a plate before giving up. The rest was packed up and taken home. I actually ate the rest this morning - again, the first few bites were soooo good! Note: Shawarmaz shares a space with Subway. The poor Subway worker seemed terribly bored... All the customers were heading to Shawarmaz!

Ajara B.

Yelp
This is one of the places that are ok for once but you wouldn't want to order the second time. We ordered it on Uber eats and I should say that they were quite fast (plus for that). Their portions are really fair for the price they charge ($28 for the whole thing) and you get to choose from a dozen of sides, appetizers and condiments. The food: the kebabs were tasty but dry, potatoes were not fresh and tasted weirdly, hummus was a bit bland, the rice was good, cheese pies were yum and I can't say anything about the salad because I didn't even try it - can't stand turnips and pickles. Overall, I liked the place but I am not amazed. Not the best middle eastern place tho.

Yelp
I ate here twice on my visit. Many of my travel mates were not really adventurous eaters and did not want to eat any Meditteranean food (my city does not have any good places) so even though this is a fast/casual place sharing space with subway I though the menu was appealing and it was the highest rated within a mile of my hotel, I made sure to stop by. The first meal I had a large grilled combo plate. Chicken, steak, kofta, and sujuk on top of salad, pickles, rice, and potatoes. Everything except the kofta was delicious, the kofta was just a bit bland for my liking. There was enough food for at least 3 hungry people, I had lots of leftover. The 2nd visit was right before going to the airport. It was right as they opened so the chicken was not quite ready so I went with beef shawarma in the big homemade lavash style bread and a side of falafels. The thinly shaved beef was moist and flavorful and I loved the texture and chewiness of the bread/wrap. The falafels were crispy and seasoned really nicely inside. My reluctant friends were envious of my food at the airport. ha.

Yelp
One of our favourite places for good shawarma in Montreal! I would advise against taking anything not shawarma related (we tried the mixed grillades which was very disappointing, low quality of meat and a tiny portion) however, the magic poutine is truly magical! We get the large mixed shawarma magic poutine to share and it is probably enough for 3-4 people or as a meal for 1-2! Delicious fried garlic potatoes, juicy shawarma, lots of cheese and sauce and topped with their special sauce and toppings! Highly recommend!

Remi R.

Yelp
Best shawarma in town. I only east meat shawarma usually. They are the only ones that have the meat shawarma tastes good. I choose the special bread that is put on the oven with the shawarma with their special dressings and sauce. Their spices are completely different than any other shawarma place. And they serve the sandwich full and stuffy (big quantity) it is a little bit higher price range than other Shawarmaz but it is 100% with meet and spices and made from scratch. Hands down.
