The Best Yemeni Restaurants in Metro Detroit - Eater Detroit

"Not to be confused with the Dearborn chain of restaurants with an identical name, Sheeba Restaurant stands on its own, sharing a block with Yemen Cafe in Hamtramck. The restaurant, whose exterior displays a mural celebrating Yemeni culture, features popular dishes like agdah (a mix of stewed vegetables with a choice of protein), tanoor flatbreads, and fahsah (stewed, shredded lamb with potatoes) served in a clay pot with sauces. Call in to place orders for carryout or get delivery through Caviar, Doordash, or Uber Eats." - Brenna Houck

Sheeba is finally back in business after a long period of remodeling and renovation and it was worth the wait! The place looks amazing with a fresh, modern design and thoughtful touches throughout. Huge thanks to the owners for investing in the restaurant and bringing it back even better than before. As always, the food is delicious, the customer service is excellent, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Highly recommended!

Google
Food is delicious but very unorganized. Price is also high. There is no free water. You have to purchase bottles of water with your food. Halal food. Very few parking next to the restaurant.

Google
They just reopened the restaurant from remodeling and it looks fantastic, and their food is even better. Must try!

Fares Ali

Google
Delicious food even became better after they opened back up and came up with the newest dessert a home made Kunafa that they make in the kitchen last time I ate this kinda kunfa when I was in Saudia Arabia in a Yemeni restaurant glad they came up with the same thing Cuase it’s a delicious dessert very creamy

Google
They were so welcoming and the food was delicious they even gave us a complimentary lentil soup that was freshly made. I had the half chicken. We couldn’t help but eat half the food before I realized I should’ve taken a picture. So delicious. 🤤

Google
we decided to try Shiva Mandi special combos turn out to be a real gem despite the restaurant not being fancy, but it made us feel at home. The food was excellent flavorful and delicious but what really is stole our hearts was people at Sheba they were very respectful. and on top they didn’t even charge for Tea.

Google
Back in Hamtramck, let's try a new place. Everything sounded great. The descriptions are very helpful especially if you're unfamiliar with the cuisine. With a menu this size, it takes a while to decide. The soup is astoundingly good. Added some of the crushed peppers and really "kicked it up a notch". When the entree arrived, it was bubbling violently in its clay pot. Then the platter sized bread arrived. I wish I could fully describe it well. I will gladly return.

Google
Food is always tasty and the service from the cooks is amazing . We love going there to eat as a family. They have a variety of food choices, vegetarian and non vegetarian. The chicken maraq is delicious along with their salads and chicken and rice dishes . I highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Absolutely phenomenal food and service. The lentils/broth start off the meal perfectly. We ordered the Sheeba Plate, Mushakal Platter (I love okra), and Fahsah w/chicken. All were absolutely fantastic!!! Definitely a comfortable vibe and they're open late--shukran!

Yelp
Open until midnight. It's a bit rough just outside the store doors. Small spot. Staff are friendly. We ordered two fresh OJs, Fattoush salad, small hummus, zesty hummus chicken gallaba, fahsa chicken. Fahsa is one of favorite meat items, if it's available. We asked for some of the red and fern hot sauce. Had our table cleaned by our young waiter. They brought us some lamb broth soup and some of the red sauce and the jalapeño sauce as well. The broth is decent. The hot sauces are fresh and so spicy. The Fattoush salad was decent, more leafy greens would have been better. The dressing is pretty good. The fresh OJ is not sweet, the oranges aren't so ripe at all for either one of our drinks. The hummus is different here, flavor wise, it's quite good and grows on you after a bite or two. The chicken Fahsa is pretty good, found a couple of small chicken bones in the stew, but still good. It came out piping hot. Nicely flavored too. I didn't get a single piece of potatoes in any bites of mine. My husband had one single potato piece. The spicy hummus is good, as expected. Their pita breads are huge, reminds of gluten based, flat dosa. We were only able to get down one piece. I didn't order any bread but was charged for 3 tandoori breads. $1 each. :/ The waiter gave us back $2 since we never actually ordered the bread at all, but did eat one at least. He's good about customer service. The EVOO that they use on their hummus is quite flavorful here.

Yelp
Food and service are very good I have visited the restaurant several times The restaurant specializes in Yemeni food

Yelp
Came with a big group with no reservation- space was already super busy but they made our big group work immediately! Quick and hospitable service, amazing (like jaw dropping) food, and the sweetest staff. I highly recommended the fattoush salad, the shay (tea) which is better than any I've ever tasted, and any of the lamb or chicken dishes on the menu. 1000% coming back for my next trip to Detroit.

Imran K.

Yelp
Tasty food . Place is little small not ideal for families but for hanging out with friends it's a good place
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
Unassuming family restaurant, very casual. Luncheonette style tables. But the food is superb. I ate chicken agdah, a very savory stew of chicken and vegetables: potatoes, okra, carrots, and peppers, served with rounds of chewy, fresh flatbread. I was unable to finish it, and the bill came to all of $17.00.
google avatar

Joann S.

Yelp
The Haneth is delicious. Lamb is so tender and the seasoning they use is on point. Also they salad dressing is very unique and citrusy. Will be back for sure
google avatar

Barani M.

Yelp
Got the chicken agdah with rice. Food was very fresh and flavorful. The soup was good too.

Yelp
Been coming here for years and love it. Still amazing. Highly recommend the fassolia, garlic sauce, hummus, borma, haneeth with rice, and the hot spice tea. We feast when we come here. Much better food & more authentic than the place next door.

Naye G.

Yelp
Delicious food. We were in from out of town and wanted good middle eastern food. This was the place.

Yelp
Food is excellent, restaurant look not so much. Kind of a dive place with excellent food. Set up like a coney but otherwise clean. Cool place to grab lunch.

John B.

Yelp
The vegetarian Saltah hits hard! Juices are top too. The staff were kind and helpful. Don't miss out on Sheeba In Hamtramck!

Yelp
On my pursuit of the Bizarre Foods Detroit episode reenactment, Sheeba was on my list to try out their Lamb Kidney Sub. If you've ever been to the Middle East, well, save the plane ticket. When you walk in, you're transported to a small restaurant that could be easily mistaken for an Middle Eastern authentic place. It has the music, the tv shows, the clientele, and the FOOD. I don't think there is any wasting of lamb in this place. If it's slaughtered for me to eat, why not eat it all right? We were not expecting to get Lamb Soup, just the Lamb Kidney Sub, but we easily were talked into soup by our server. How can I turn down Lamb Soup? It's one I've never tried nor heard. You can see that I can only imagine what parts of the Lamb are cooked in it, but it's definitely slowly simmered in the meat and bones. It has a deep meaty flavor of lamb, really to the point that you think you're cutting into a lamb shank. It's pretty oily, partly from the fat from the meat, but also I think olive oil. You can see from the picture, these wonderful pools of oil to add the heartiness of the soup. We also couldn't resist the pita bread to dip into the soup. It's huge, really huge. We had to include a hand in the picture just to get a point of comparison. It comes out HUGE and HOT. I'm not kidding on either point. It came directly out of the stone oven and almost burnt my fingers in trying to tear a piece off. Dip this right into your soup, oh so good. The Lamb Kidney Sub arrived. The initial inspection looks like the kidneys are finely chopped and sauteed well done. Not done well as it's perfect, but over cooked. It reminded me of when you cook bacon well done and break it up into bacon bits. They were very crunchy and some pieces were good presented this way, but most were too hard and tough to chew them. It's served on a nice toasted sub bun and mayo inside to elevate the sandwich a bit, but the star of the sandwich, the kidney, You only get a mediocre review. I would stick with the bread and soup. I'm interested in trying several other options there. They have items on the menu that are not found in most places, so it's definitely worth another visit.

Yelp
The Chicken Agdah was great! Seasoned to perfection and to add hummus made it a delightful meal.

Ali S.

Yelp
The don't respect the time they can put you on hold for an hour even if you orders in advance Very bad service

Yelp
Stumbled on Sheeba Restaurant after visiting the Bell Isle. We were actually headed to another restaurant but decided to give it a try. What a great decision! The food was amazing -- and the bread was fantastic! Wonderful service, as well. Our server was pleasant and very patient -- explaining the various dishes to us. He was also great with our four young children. We were really surprised that the restaurant was not ranked higher, and we can only conclude that is because there are not a lot of reviews yet. If you are anywhere reasonably close, you really need to give it a try!

Yelp
Awesome place . Great home made Arabic food . On the downside they sometimes over charge & early morning it's like few minutes of waiting before is picked up to kitchen or done . Call & place order before getting there They should push little harder mostly because . They have yemen cafe next door & that's there computation. But Yemen cafe breakfast isn't as good as sheeba restaurant. But this place is good enough for the budget.

Yelp
Perhaps owing to its multi-ethnic makeup Hamtramck enjoys diplomatic immunity from the smoking ban. But, at 9 a.m. today, I was the only person here not having the cigarette and foul combo. Perhaps I should have gotten the foul, but I have had a craving for shakshuka for years. Well, what I got was not shakshuka, I'm quite sure. It was scrambled eggs. This tasted good enough, but I never order scrambled eggs at restaurants, because it is a ridiculous thing to do. The yemeni bread was good, and made me feel very silly for asking for a fork. It was also enjoyable watching the satellite news, which is all about Western conspiracies (like middle eastern tea partiers). Anyhow, for a all of your foul needs, this place will do. I don't think I will be returning, though.

Yelp
Very good Yemeni food . Fresh and tasteful. Rice is so good . Baked lamb meet tender and delicious ! Very friendly service .

Duna R.

Yelp
In love with this place. The fool (mashed fava beans) is the best- tastes just like it would in the middle east. The lamb and chicken haneeth are also outstanding. Will definitely come back. I give Sheeba 5 stars for the tastiness of their food (will leave out location and ambience for now)
google avatar

Yelp
I went here with a friend after we both realized we had never had Yemeni food before. This was the perfect spot as the food was glorious and the staff was very friendly. While this is definitely not a glamorous spot, don't let the drab decor fool you. The food is amazing! Our waiter explained all the food items to us once he realized we had no idea what anything meant. He also made recommendations depending on what we liked. We ended up ordering hummus with meat, lamb haneeth (marinated lamb chops with rice), and vegetable seltah (kind of a vegetable gumbo served in a very hot clay pot). All the items were phenomenal! Also, the portions were HUGE so we were not able to come close to finishing even half of our food. Definitely a great bargain, with the amazing food for such a good price. Pro tip: Go to the back of the restaurant! When you enter the restaurant, it has the standard tables and booths expected from any tiny restaurant but if you ask the waiter to take you to the back, they will take you to an area where you can sit on the ground (on cushions) and eat in traditional Yemeni style. Don't expect any luxury but my friend and I thought it was pretty damn awesome to enjoy our food on the ground the way it's meant to be enjoyed. =)

Yelp
Best authentic Yamani food of all Hamtramck and Dix area. Keep the good job guys.

Yelp
First time having yemenese food. It was delicious! We had Fahsa (smashed meat) and haneeth (lamb) Very nice staff, deliciously flavored hot food with big portions. A bit salty for our taste but still good. Ambiance wise, it could use some help...fluorescent lighting and dirty bathrooms, but I dig a dive meal every now and again.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
The best! You get a feel of the middle east, and the workers are generous! Dont forget to try there spicy fish dip :) btw the picture is old the place got a make over and a beautiful middle eastern moral painting on the outside of the place, talent!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Is heard they had liver and kidney sandwiches, and thought I likes me them parts. Popped down there and this fat Irish guy felt out of place. I tried to order the liver 'out" the kidney "out" and the heat "out" On one hand I'm disappointed but to their credit hey they are popular. I had a steak sub. It was good but want to go back for them there parts

Yelp
Delicious! Went for the late night Fahsa with bread, soup and Yemini tea. My wife and I ate a great meal for $10 plus with top notch service. To start with, we couldn't make up our mind between Yemen Cafe and Sheeba but two locals exited Sheeba and without asking said "ambiance is next door this is for the food" so according to them Sheeba's meals are better than their competitor. We didn't try Yemen cafe to see if this is true, but c'est la vie. We were craving Sheeba the next day which is always a good sign. Wish I got a Vernors but I didn't see it hiding in the fridge. Shukran! (4 stars due to the place could be a little more cleaner)

Tessa D.

Yelp
I loved the original location and was excited for this one to open! It was amazing! Best lamb I have ever had! The fahsa was especially delicious! Great hummus and bread! The portion sizes were very large and we left full, happy, and still had leftovers! The manager came to our table himself and walked us out as we left! Very friendly staff! There is complimentary valet parking as well as the parking lot tends to fill up fast. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
Authentic, wonderful food. The make the best tea infused with cloves. My daughter who doesn't like tea even loves this. Their bread is so yummy that you'll want to order some to take home.
google avatar

Sterling H.

Yelp
I read the reviews and took the family here. Pros- Good haneeth, rice, and bread. Cons- The dining room was run down and infested with drain flies and houseflies, the water cups had blue/purple oil slicks on top, the waiter overcharged me $5.00, the hummus was awful, the fattoush sub-par, and the Sheeba salad had an orange topping that was the worst thing that I have ever had on a salad. We definitely prefer the Sheeba in Dearborn. No flies, cleaner cups, nicer decor, more flavor and spice in the food. Whenever I see flies in the dining room of a restaurant, I assume there are more in the kitchen, landing on food, and laying maggots in the kitchen.

Yelp
Its my fav Arabian restaurant in Detroit in term of teaste. Try "Fahsah" ,everyone had it liked it very much.
google avatar

Tahmeed K.

Yelp
Sheeba is great! I would often stop in to grab breakfast, take your friends and eat family style because the portions are large! Super friendly staff as well!
google avatar

Hussain A.

Yelp
The best traditional food you can fined in Michigan, breakfast is amazing !! I loved the haneth "rice with meet" and the fahsa "beef with chili" and bormah "okra, potatoes and beef" and what's call the magal gal "lamb chpes with tomato and onions" and finally the great tea
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
This place is not worth trying! I've had good yemeni food before so i know wht im talking about! Such a pointless meal, stewed meat served seperately from the broth, white plain rice with scattered specks of red dye, unmemorable galaba and the driest least flavourful rotisserie chicken i've ever had! The only good thing was the bread! would never return! To be honest, the meat didnt taste bad, but how hard is it to stew some meat? It might be exotic for some i guess! When i think of yemeni food i think of mandi or zerbian or things that actually have some flavour and spice, yemen afterall is known for it's spices!

Steve T.

Yelp
Sheeba in Hamtramck is OK but not a restaurant you'll want to go to on a regular basis. This was my first time trying Yemini food but I've traveled all over the Middle East so expected it to be similar-which it is in some ways. The seasoning is definitely different than you'll find in a Lebanese restaurant-more fenugreek, cinnamon, etc. The restaurant itself is more like a diner but the staff were very helpful and explained the menu to us. The lamb broth they brought before dinner was OK but was very greasy and didn't have much flavor. We had the fahsah and the Yemenite tawook. Both were fine with the kebab being the better of the two. The bread is great but otherwise the rest was nothing special. It is cheap and the portions are large. The bathrooms were filthy. Glad we tried it but likely won't go back.
google avatar

Badrul F.

Yelp
Great tea, great food. Hole in the wall place so make sure you don't have the wrong expectations when coming here.

I K.

Yelp
I have never written a restaurant review before, but this time I decided to write. I really felt the urge to let those who don't know.. This isn't the typical Middle Eastern food that we have all been accustomed to. In addition to the Middle Eastern menu they offer the best authentic Yemeni food. The restaurant is very clean, beautifully decorated, and the staff is very friendly. Manager/owner would come to table to check how everything was, we even had complimentary desserts. If you really crave nice tender meat that melts in your mouth, try the haneed. The food and service was absolutely amazing!!!
google avatar

Harry R.

Yelp
While the decor and service are humble, the food and experience is incredible. I have tried much of the menu, and everything I've had was delicious. Get a bean dish, soup and try the selteh or galabba, song with a few pieces of fresh tandoori bread, and you and your friends will be hooked.
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Quite tasty. Pricing is higher than Dearborn but still reasonable. I'd put it at the middle of the pack. You won't go wrong by coming here, but you aren't likely to fall in love with the cuisine.
google avatar

Layla S.

Yelp
Delicious haneeth as main course or agdah, fahsa (meat and tomato appetizer) with fresh bread, and margah soup. On point! But you have to be a meat eater. Don't get dressed up either, more of a casual place. Never had Yemeni food before today -- so delicious
