Star D.C. Chef Kevin Tien Splits With Hot Capitol Hill Restaurant Emilie’s | Eater DC

"A kebab concept with two Northern Virginia locations owned by Sam Shoja, Sheesh is noted as another of Shoja’s operations relevant to the group taking over Emilie’s ownership stake." - Gabe Hiatt

1st, the person that took my order was rude and cut me off several times while I ordered. 2nd the food was dry. 3rd the shawarma was literally just dry chicken in a pita wrap, no sauce, a single tiny little pickle. I will never spend a single penny here ever again and recommend no one else does either.

Jay M.

Google
I've been to Sheesh about 10 times now and have never been let down. These guys deliver great food at an awesome rate. I personally recommend the Tawook lemon and oregano dinner plate with a side of hummus.

tamica T.

Google
Great food very good customer service. We had carry outs of two lamb chop dinners with salads. This is a MUST GO TO spot. The chicken Shwarma is tasty as well. If ever in the area, please stop in and give them a try. Sorry I don’t have pics this time.

Google
Generous portions of food, great experience like you are traveling the Mediterranean and enjoying the local food and culture. Delicious lamb!

I have been going to Sheesh since 2014 and it has remained my favorite restaurant ever since. The food is amazing, and I have made friends with many waiters since I started going, who know me, know what I want to eat, and are just so sweet and kind. Their garlic sauce is truly the best thing in this world and has gotten me through many a hard time.

Matthew H.

Google
Very basic place. Firstly, restaurant is practically empty and I didn’t get greeted upon walking in for lunch. I sat at table, the salad was the best part of my experience. The chicken shawarma plate arrived smelling like fish and food arrived cold. I walked up to the front, to request fresher warm food. Needless to say, I will NOT be back to this place. Very disappointing!

Jay M.

Google
I've been here many different times of day and ordered a few different plates. Every time they deliver great food and it keeps me coming back.

First visit: We can not wait to return! Hands down our new favorite restaurant! Our servers name was Moe and he was so helpful, kind and the service was quick! ***Update, second visit. Walked in tonight at 8:31 and was told they stopped seating at 8:30. We said we have a long car ride in a small car. Still no table. The girl behind the register was so rude and annoyed. Their hours are advertised as 9pm closing. This was misleading and they should publish that they stop seating at 8:30. Because of this we will not be returning. The contrast of service from our visit last week to tonight is wild. No matter how good the food is, it's not worth being treated poorly. I changed a 5 star to 1.

Yelp
Most of the food was good. However, they tried to over charge me by $30 The itemized check was presented with the bill I was expected to sign. The bill that I was expected to sign was $30 higher with no explanation as to where the $30 came from. Waitress seemed shocked that I noticed and gave some excuse about her glasses. The owner refunded the $30 with no questions. ALWAYS CAREFULLY CHECK YOUR BILLS Beware of scams

Yelp
I went to Sheesh during my recent travels but I forgot to log the names of the dishes. What I can say is the food was delicious, nice and hot, and enough spice just the way I like it. We had lamb as the protein and cheese cubes in this wonderful sauce with garlic naan. It was very aromatic and the lamb was tender and a nice size for the main dish. The service was top tier and the server was very attentive. He even made some suggestions and helped us with our selection. The space was open with adequate seating and not overly decorated to lessen the authenticity of the restaurant.
google avatar

Chloe B.

Yelp
The platter is a generous portion. The bread was still hot and fluffy. This is our go to place.

Yelp
Great Mediterranean place. They have fantastic spinach pies. I do wish they had chicken kafta! But their other chicken dishes are pretty good.

Amelia

Yelp
The food was excellent. The service was friendly though they were a bit busy...we come here often. Ordered a whole deboned chicken with salad, rice and grilled vegetables. Always amazing! The chicken was cooked perfectly not dry nice and juicy and charred and the veggies too! Yum! Warm fresh pita bread is amazing! I love stuffing all in pita bread with garlic sauce OMGosh! You MUST try. Large beautiful plate...full of color! So inviting!
google avatar

Justin F.

Yelp
This place was great. We did a catering takeout for our youth hockey team and families and the food was fantastic. Great service, everything was exactly how we wanted it and everyone in our group enjoyed the food. The deboned chicken is amazing. We will be back again for sure!
google avatar

Noah R.

Yelp
The prices went up and the service went down!!! Forgot to give us our fries! 16 ounce Garlic sauce was half way full! The take out packaging is terrible! Spilled all over my vehicle! And the biggest problem of all is the owners snotty daughter that doesn't care about making the order right! This is why I will not return! Dearborn will be utterly disgraced by this company that doesn't know anything about running true authentic Mediterranean food!!!

James A S.

Yelp
Carry out service is efficient. There is enough food provided in one dinner for two people to have their fill.

Yelp
We had a wonderful dinner with my family. The food was delicious, the portions were generous, the staff was very kind and warm and lovely, and the interior was so warm and inviting too. We really love the lemon oregano chicken with almond rice, the house (fattoush?) salads are delicious, as always the fresh baked bread/pitas were incredible (especially with garlic sauce) and my kids ADORED the smoothies (I also love these smoothies--might be a personal preference thing, but I honestly like them more than any smoothie I've had anywhere!) My one year old tried a sip and then hugged that smoothie like it was the best thing she had ever tasted and she was not letting anyone share it without a fight . Thank you Sheesh Mediterranean!

Spencer W.

Yelp
Food tasted fine. Ordered 2 chicken shwarmas, 1 falafel sandwich. Got 3 chicken shwarmas. Okay, whatever it's fine. One shawarma had a HUGE chicken bone in the middle of it. Bro how service was fine. But come on dude.
google avatar

Yelp
Very nice, inexpensive, casual place. Food and service was great. I had the lentil soup and the Chicken Ghalaba sandwich which both were very good. My friend had the fattoush salad which she enjoyed and it looked really good. The bread and sauce that they give you complimentary was also great. I definitely recommend trying this place.

M S.

Yelp
The chicken was old and nasty. The rice had no flavor and the waitress was very short with us. The kebab was raw and the other part was burnt. Worst Mediterranean food I ever tasted. I give it one star for the lentil soup.

Craig K.

Yelp
We have been here before and the food was good but this time the food and service were sub par. The chicken and meat were tough. Definitely had to cut the beef/lamb with the knife that came with the combo for 2. The chicken chunks were the same way. We got kibbee and apparently with this restaurant no turnips or pickles come with the order or the meal. Other restaurants serve them as part of the order. We asked for pickles and turnips and an extra small garlic sauce. We were told there would be an extra charge for both. Nickel and dimeing people for small items served free at other Mediterranean restaurants is not conducive to me returning here. Then the bill comes and there is a $1.00 charge for using a debit card. No notice no warning from the waitress. Debit card means the money is immediately taken out of a checking account it's cash ya don't have to wait for the credit card company to reimburse you. Just another nickel and dime fee added by this establishment.

Adrianne H.

Yelp
This place was so delicious! I have a pine nut and almond allergy and they took care of me. They let me know which items were safe to eat and kept the other items towards the other end of our table. My favorite items included the garlic dip, beef kabobs, and lamb chops. I can eat those all day! I wish I lived in Detroit so I can add this to my restaurant rotation!
google avatar

Kennoniah B.

Yelp
My wife and I carried out, and the staff was so kind! The portion sizes and flavors are incredible. Do yourself a favor and stop here!

James W.

Yelp
Amazing food! Kabob and lentil soup are excellent! Bread was also very good! Will have to come again and will recommend to family and friends!

Yelp
Tried this restaurant for the first time. It was reasonably priced, good food that was plentiful. We started with the Baba Ghannouj and house made naan. It had a wonderful Smokey flavor to it. Next, then we enjoyed a cup of chicken vegetable soup and a cup of lentil soup, both hot at service and wonderful taste. My husband ordered the garlic almond and rice ghalaba, I had the Sheesh tawook. My husbands dish was super hot (temperature) mine was only Luke warm. There was plenty of food, we took more than half home. We will try this place again. But we will split next time.
google avatar

Ingrid B.

Yelp
Their bbq is kind of raw/bloody or burnt. It's overpriced even the Hummus & Baba Ghannouj are very expensive.
google avatar

Ann W.

Yelp
Pre-COVID, Sheesh had a good take-out game. Whenever I dropped in for my shish-tawook fix, there was always a line-up for take-out. During COVID, there was even more interest in take-out. People were waiting to place their order, lounging against the wall, or lingering in front of the cashier, when I arrived, after having placed my order online. Incidentally, I liked the online platform that they selected. This time, I went with one of my favorites, beef kebabs with salad and rice. The beef cubes were incredibly tender and well seasoned. I liked the fluffy rice, which I never have because I like to save my carbs for the pita bread here and my appetite for the generous serving of salad. I also had the baba ghanoush and a healthy serving of garlic sauce, staples whenever I'm here. Service was a bit slow but I expected that since it is usually the case here, even on a Tuesday evening.

Yelp
I placed a large carryout order at 3:30. When we picked it up at 4:15, we were told it would be another 10 minutes. Got the order home. We had 2 chicken shawarma platters. The destruction of "charbroiled" was inaccurate. There was no seasoning. Tasted like boiled chicken. When I called to let them know I needed to refund and get a chicken kabob instead- the manager was so rude to me. I waited another 30 minutes for the chicken kabob. The gentleman at the register was kind, but the management had terrible customer service and was incredibly rude. Never again will we take our from this establishment.
google avatar

Judy N.

Yelp
I love their garlic sauce (yes you have to pay extra for a side of it). Their lentil soup is okay, it's not crushed lentil but will do. I ordered a chicken schwarma sandwich to go but didn't pick it up right away so it got a bit soggy. This isn't my favorite place to get Mediterranean food but will work in a pinch. (For some reason when I ordered thru Yelp, the prices were higher than what the attached receipt said on my order, so call to order and just pay when you get there;)
google avatar

Yelp
They have a dispenser right outside the door with hand sanitizer. Stephanie came to us with fresh hot pita pockets, garlic and tomato sauce. We asked her to not leave it since we can't eat the bread or butter at the moment. She's attentive. They do bake fresh bread in their oven up front. We ordered the sampler plate, it's easy and gives us a nice sampling of food too. We got grilled veggies, one soup and one salad. We also got chicken shawarma and chicken Tawook. The house salad is okay, dressing is good, lettuce is a less the fresh for me. The lentil soup is not bad. The veggie grape leaves, lamb grape leaves, tahini, yogurt, baba ghanouj, hummus, tabouli, pickles, falafel were our first. The falafel is good, crunchy outside, not dry on the inside. The tabouli is not as fresh as I would like. It tastes good, the parsley is soft and mushy and has been sitting in the lemon juice for too long. The chicken Tawook is good, it's moist and nicely cooked. The chicken shawarma meat is also flavorful and moist too. The green peppers and carrots rough cut, like a single cut maybe. They may as well have cooked the entire pepper and served it up. One green peeper appeared to have some mold inside of it, that's enough veggies for me tonight. The veggies cut have been cut up smaller, there were some giant bite size pieces on the plate. The hummus and baba ghanou are both decent. The veggie grape leaves are super salty. There's an extra cost for changing to all chicken, 2.50 to be exact, the kafta is cheaper than the Tawook. Would be good to mention it during the ordering the process. The waitress knew when I called her over to ask her about the $2.50 charge, I didn't even have to say anything. She said she figured I was going to ask as she told me what it was for. She revised the bill.

Yelp
We order Sheesh a few times a year at my business. We usually get the various platters and the food is always high quality, seasoned well, and large amounts for the price. They also do not skimp on how the rice is made, as some middle eastern restaurants do lately. It still has vermicelli and toasted almonds. Plus, their home made bread is really good.

T J.

Yelp
The worst and driest chicken shawarma I've ever had! I will not be going back! !!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Mitch S.

Yelp
We frequent the place for take-out. A bit pricey but the food has always been excellent. Always provide fresh bread with the orders. Our go-to is the hummus chicken.
google avatar

Wendy P.

Yelp
Love Sheesh! Carryout/call ahead is perfect. Never had issues with orders. Dined in several times--always had perfect service. Plenty of room for my family, including my daughter who uses as power wheelchair. Definitely will continue to support this small business.

Rosemary I.

Yelp
The food was very good and plentiful. Our waiter was prompt. Came back to check on us and didn't hurry us. The restaurant was clean, casual and comfortable.
google avatar

Katelyn S.

Yelp
I've ordered bread and garlic from sheesh before, but this is my first time ordering a meal. Unfortunately, I am quite disappointed with the quality of the food. The chicken shawarma plate came with salad and rice, which were both decent. However, the chicken was under seasoned and rubbery. Not quite the marinated, fresh chicken shawarma I was expecting. The prices are fair, but I probably won't be back because the food lacked flavor.
google avatar

Doug R.

Yelp
Great lamb shawarma. Good lamb vegetable soup, bread and garlic sauce. Excellent lamb chili. Hot food was hot, even after a 20 min drive to work. Knocking off one star because of carry-out oversights: - Carry-out order with soups, but provided without spoons. - Very happy that the soups were not over-salted, but provided without salt packets ... and the lamb veggie soup needed a bit if salt. - No napkins provided. Will I return? Yes!
google avatar

Leo H.

Yelp
While the food was not bad, although the bread was horrible! I asked for it to be changed, and the waiter did get it, but it makes me wonder why she brought it to the table in the first place! The service was really bad, i'm not sure if my waiter was having a bad day, but i did not expect that kind of service at a dine inn restaurant. Hopefully the management can read this, and realize how terrible my server was. Not impressed and probably won't be back.
google avatar

Larry W.

Yelp
Amazing place I love everything about it. They give great customer service and always fresh delicious food and they make their own bread so that's a plus.
google avatar

Yelp
We've had great experiences with sheesh! We've done mostly takeout but a couple weeks ago on a Saturday we went in to sit down for lunch for the first time since quarantine started. It was not crowded at all, and we felt relatively safe since the waitstaff were all wearing masks. I ordered the lamb kabob with rice- a fair warning, it comes with A LOT of rice (see pictures). My boyfriend ordered the beef kabob- though the lamb on mine was very good, I'm sad to say that his beef was DELICIOUS. It was succulent and tender and full of flavor. I have to say though that our favorite from Sheesh that we usually get for takeout if their Chicken Sajji. The Sajji sauce is out of this world- highly recommend if you're thinking of ordering from here.
google avatar

Alex T.

Yelp
I ordered carryout from Sheesh last week. I had heard good things in the past and have been wanting to give it a try for a while. I ordered Chicken Shawarma, Fattoush Salad, and a size of rice. All were pretty good, but I wasn't particularly impressed. The shawarma wasn't as flavorful as I am used to from other Mediterranean places. The salad was good, but not great. The rice was a HUGE portion and was very good.
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
Some of the best Mediterranean food I've had!! The pita bread was so fluffy and warm, the hummus incredibly creamy, and the meal was so flavorful. The portions are huge so if you think it's a bit pricy, you'll have leftovers for days. The service is also stellar!
google avatar

Kyle W.

Yelp
Got Shawarmas at 8:45. They close at 11 and the chicken was very dry. Good value but sandwiches and Garlic weren't good. Also, order of bread... Good bread but cold.
google avatar

Denise K.

Yelp
Just walked out, the hostess gave us the menu and told Sami they had a table. Sat there for 10 minutes and no sign of the server so we left. Not a soul in there eating but us.
google avatar

Tyrone D. S.

Yelp
Whenever I'm in town even for just one day I try to stop here and eat. When I lived in Detroit I ate here frequently. I've been eating here for close to 10 years until today. Cutting chicken breast with a plastic knife isn't ideal so I asked for the chicken to be sliced. It was a carry out order. I was told no the kitchen was too busy. To make matters worse, the woman at the front counter in a condescending tone suggested I could cut it myself. There are literally thousands of restaurants across the country that wish they were still open to honor such a simple request. Sheesh takes its customers for granted. As a result, I will never return. As a small business owner myself, nothing sticks in my craw more than a business which doesn't place a premium on its customers.
google avatar

Jay J.

Yelp
Chicken was super dry, very good portions, lentil soup was good .had problems will the bill but was able to fox it. I used apple pay for payment.

Yelp
Time for an update, my last review was ten years ago, already! Ten years later we still come here at least once or more times per month.. That says something in itself. This is one of those restaurants which serve consistent quality. The recipes don't vary depending on the night (don't you hate when that happens, you'll go somewhere and each time you order it tastes slightly different?) - they are super consistent and always good. The owners are really friendly, and most staff is attentive and kind. We are creatures of habit, so we rotate throughout the menu and usually order one of the same things. Oftentimes, lunch or dinner is a salad with shawarma (chicken), the sheesh combo, or chicken sheesh tawook with lemon-oregano sauce. Whatever meat dish you opt for, I really urge you to get it with some tahini. Ordinarily I am not a fan of tahini, however theirs has just a hint of spice in it which makes it different and great. If you do not want meat, their falafel is very good, but my favorite vegetarian dish is the bulgur. When we don't share - which is almost never - I'll order one of two things; the hummus-lamb meal or the "zesty" swordfish ghallaba. The former is a zesty and super flavorful stew, it has peppers, carrots, onions, tomatoes and your protein of choice; salmon, swordfish (my fav), chicken, lamb or beef. Though I actually like their rice here, I usually order this with fries as the potato goes really well with the stew sauce. I always have a 16oz container of their toum in my fridge - it's the whipped garlic spread that comes with each meal. I use it for so many different things when I'm cooking, plus, obviously, it tastes great on just about anything crunchy. i'm still in love with their pita bread, although nowadays pita bread does not love me back.

Yelp
I passed by this place for years, finally last night we decided to go eat at middle eastern restaurant, mlst were close, and I found out they are still open. The place was spotless, very large portions of food, and extremely cheap. Young guy waited on us, was very good server he was on top of his service. Will definetely go back again. I read some of the comments down low, people are very uncosider it about the short staff and being rude.
google avatar

A A.

Yelp
Disappointing! When they can't butcher chicken properly and season meat at all they shouldn't be in the business. Very poor cook on the deboned chicken from rare to burnt. Honestly it was nasty and inedible. The standards at this place are very low lately and they obviously don't care about ruining a classic tasty dish by not cutting the chicken evenly. If the foods not right don't send it. Please get it together as many of your customers are aware of what's going on before you lose them. There are way better places where the chef actually takes pride in his food. Best of Luck!

Yelp
Sheesh used to be one of my favorite go-to lunch spots in the area. The food was consistently good, better even than a lot of other nearby Mediterranean options, and the prices were competitive. Over the last few years, in my opinion, the food quality has deteriorated significantly. It's as if when the restaurant expanded the dining area, they sacrificed quality for quantity (of business, not food). Add in the growing number of Mediterranean spots in the area, and an online ordering system plagued with problems, and "Sheesh" has become little more than the disappointed utterance I make after dining here. Let's start with the food. The bread, made in their wood (or gas) fired oven, is still great and cheap. That's a positive. I used to love their crushed lentil soup. But the last few times I've ordered it, it was watered down to be almost inedible. I was able to salvage my last cup only by adding a fair amount of salt and vinegar to give it some acidity and taste. Although the entrees I've had recently did not disappoint, the various chicken sandwiches/wraps often have large chunks of gristle or fat. Having lousy protein isn't remedied by their garlic sauce (which is admittedly potent and delicious). So, the food is mixed at best. Customer service, however, is lacking. I placed my last order through their Online Ordering system, which uses ChowNow. The system seemed easy enough to use. But after picking up my order, I realized the items I received did not match those I ordered through ChowNow. I was missing an order of hummus and had received over a dozen bread instead of the half-dozen I ordered. I received a receipt from the restaurant that matched what I got, but it did not match my online order. When I contacted the restaurant about the discrepancy, I was told they have had frequent issues with online orders not matching the orders customers received. If the restaurant knows of numerous continued issues with ChowNow, why keep using that particular online food vendor? There are so many these days, it seems lazy at best, negligent at worst, not to switch to another option that doesn't give customers frequent issues. The restaurant manager (I'm assuming) insisted he could not correct the discrepancy and refund me because ChowNow had charged the order, not the restaurant. He was rather dismissive of my complaint and insisted ChowNow would resolve the issue. I eventually received a partial refund for the missing item after contacting ChowNow, and I can report that ChowNow's customer service team was very helpful in resolving the issue (unlike the manager at Sheesh). It isn't worth the hassle and risk of poor food quality when there are so many other options in the area, many of them consistently high quality (not to mention lower prices). I recommend Kabob Bistro on 6 Mile in Redford. It's a small establishment that could use the additional business and deserves it. Friendly owners with consistently great food. Give them a try. Skip Sheesh, and avoid the disappointment.

Yelp
Sheesh is amazing. They have good, quality food with excellent portions. The pita bread is the absolute best around.

Kathie T.

Yelp
Great food and service. Like dinning in and their carry-out service is incredible. They always are always correct!

C M.

Yelp
Have gone here twice for dinner. On both occasions service was excellent and the food was delicious. We love the fresh bread and sauce. My daughter ordered just a smoothie because her lunch had not settled well. She felt great after drinking the smoothie (and a little bit of bread). The rest of us ordered entrees. My husband loved the David Basha. It was very flavorful. I enjoyed my humous ghalaba with chicken. It had just the right amount of tanginess which balanced awesomely with the hummus. My son ordered the lamb platter. His only regret was ordering fries with it instead of rice. Portions were very generous and we all took home half to enjoy at a later date.

Caila M.

Yelp
Good food. Reasonably priced. Very friendly and helpful staff. You will probably have leftovers!

Yelp
This is a favorite spot for my family and a place we will continue to visit. It's a local favorite Mediterranean restaurant that takes you overseas with everything from the decor, the wait staff, music, and tastefully delicious food. Fresh oven baked bread with citrusy hummus that is creamy and makes the perfect appetizer. Get a side of the savory salsa and the garlic paste, they are an excellent addition! Now, let's just talk about the garlic paste for a minute. Attention all garlic lovers, this is the must get on the menu for you. You know how when your super thirsty and NEED something to drink and when you get that first sip of water it's heaven? That's what biting into pita dipped in the garlic paste is like....taste bud quenching. Any and all of their salads I've had are rich in flavor and in dressing. Fresh lettuce, thin sliced onions, ripe tomatoes and Mediterranean seasoning that ties it all together. Their rice goes great with any sandwich, most of their sandwiches have generous amounts of pickle and comes with garlic sauce. Their shish kabobs come with large portions of onions and carrots and all their soups are pretty delicious.
