3 Best Day Trips from Washington, D.C. | Condé Nast Traveler

"Shenandoah National Park is a 200,000-acre retreat in the Blue Ridge Mountains just an hour and fifteen minutes away from D.C. While you can do almost anything in the park (fishing, horseback riding, camping, and bird watching are all top of mind), the real standout is the network of 500-plus miles of hiking trails, including more than 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail. Selecting a hike can seem overwhelming; our favorite, though, is the Old Rag, a 9.4-mile trek that traverses a maze of boulders to finish on a giant granite slab with incredible views. Note that the trek is a heavy lift due to its 2,348-foot elevation gain. If you don't want to be on your feet too much, take your car out on Skyline Drive, which has plenty of overlook stops on its route." - Laura Ratliff, Kristen Schott

There is a $30 fee/car to get on this road - this isn't always easy to find when researching about the drive. There was a ranger station with a nice walk through exhibit space and gift shop (closed at 5 pm) at Big Meadows. There are ample pull off spots and views throughout the drive.

We came for the Junior Ranger books, but was told this is not a place for visitors to stop, that it’s just for park staff. She lied and sent us 4 miles up the road for nothing! How rude! There is no need to lie, do your job. We got a cool picture though.

Specifically for this Park Headquarters location on US-211: The front building is open to the public during business hours but has no interpretive services or exhibits. They *do* have the NPS passport stamp available inside if you’re collecting them, saving a long drive to one of the official visitor centers. Also if you are just looking to hike this area without paying admission to Skyline Drive, free parking is available off 211 if you take the exit just before going under Skyline. This lot gives you access to the Panorama lot and the Appalachian Trail.

Beautiful scenery and a lovely drive. To enjoy this park take your time. Drive the speed limit and enjoy the turnouts. They have plenty of hiking trails for beginners and for the hardcore. The Appalachian trail crosses the road on several occasions so bears and deer are not the only animals to watch for. A plethora of butterflies were about while we were here. They have horses to ride in the park so check it out. One suggestion on what not to do, we used Google maps to find our way here. I went to the Park headquarters or ranger offices. I was trying to find the entrance and or visitor center but failed. Look for the entrances. We missed several miles of the drive.

Thanks for park ranger 'Nate' We got lost in the middle of appalanchian trail, so we tried to go back to parking lot where we started our trail. But the weather was so hot and drive road temperature was really high. When we were about to dehydration, we found nate's truck and asked him to give us a ride. He helped us to find our car... Thank you so much nate...we really appreciated...!

The rangers are very helpful at this low traffic visitors center. Parking lots faces the back of the building, so walk down the stairs and around to the front door which is facing be road.

Great place to test the chicken line on your motorbike or just drive and view. Lots of hiking and overlooks. Enjoy your visit. 😊
