Yelp
We love discovering gems for both excellent food + craft cocktails in one place. Came on a Sat 4:30p and sat at the bar, no wait. Both HH menu was available until 5:30p while Dinner menu began at 5p, so we could look over everything and make our selections for 2 ppl. What we ordered:
Raw Bar:
$2 HH Oysters - Royal Miyagi, ordered 1/2 dozen. toppings and oysters were standard.
$4.50 Oishii Oyster - I only ordered one and it was the star!! Named おいしい for good reason, wow! (Oishii means "delicious!" in Japanese) I love Pacific oysters, but that's always been my preference vs. East Coast big brine.
$20 Mkt Fish Crudo - Halibut (4 pcs), pretty good tho keep in mind any crudo dish will always have some sort of fusion foodie attempt to it. the sauce wasn't bad and halibut is hard to screw up when it's fresh since the fish itself has such beautiful fat ratios. there was popcorn on the dish which was weird and didn't seem to fit, so I left it on the plate.
Appetizers:
$12 Chicken Liver Mousse Tartine - this dish was SO good! I will order this again next time. Our server Finn was so thoughtful to set down a serrated knife so we could split the toast.
$22 Savory Beignets - very savory indeed if you are into beignets! The saltiness from prosciutto and blue cheese crumbles were balanced out by the fruit.
$22 Grilled Octopus Tostada - I would not order this again, out of all the food I think this was the biggest fail. Octopus was cooked correctly but the flavor profile of the accompaniments were off - the chorizo was way too salty and totally overpowered the intricacy of the octopus' original flavor.
Entree Specials:
$28 Pork Al Pastor (12oz bone-in chop) - good portion, my friend enjoyed it but it was a bit dry and basic for me. The outside had a nice smokiness to it but the center tasted bland and not moist enough for my liking.
$38 Smoked Duck Breast (5 oz: 2 pcs breast, leg stuffed in puffed pastry) - keep in mind it's only 5oz so it's not a ton of protein for the price, but it was executed very well. Breast was juicy, fat wrap was perfect to hold moisture of the meat yet crispy on the outside layer. Leg shreds stuffed into the puffed pastry was such a treat! Very flavorful, the dark meat went so well in the baked pastry. The street corn had a really savory, almost seafood aroma to it and it was delightful to fork up with all the drippings and duck au jus sauces on the plate.
$11 HH Cocktails:
Chi Chi - vibrant and refreshing
Free the Khalo - really good, loved the coconut
Amaretto Sour - standard but fine, good price for all the egg white prep labor I wouldn't bother w at home
Blood & Sand - also standard but fine
$16 House Cocktails:
Pennyroyal Tea - this was the best cocktail we've had in the South Bay, created by Roya, one of the bartenders we met. tea-infused cocktails are so under-discovered here in the West; being of East Asian descent, we really appreciated how much the tea flavor shined through so strongly. The chartreuse was marvelous and the rest of the drink supported the primary aromas perfectly. I want to come back and try all the new creations Roya comes up with in the future!
Here & Now - at first it tasted like a standard old fashioned, but the chocolate notes really come out especially in the side backs of the tongue, has an effect of an understated and slightly hibernated awakening of the palette. Very pleasant and good for an end of dinner type drink, like a hint of dessert for non-sweet types like me who prefer savory over sweet. It's just enough to hit the spot!
Love & Happiness - Finn who took care of us throughout the meal was epic on this drink. He mentioned they had recently changed the recipe, and proactively offered to modify it in case it wasn't to our liking. He knew what he was doing, listened to our comments and re-made it to be so on point that we liked it better than the recipe set by the restaurant.
Dr. Zaius - comes in a fun cup!
This restaurant is from the same business group as The Table (Willow Glen), Forthright (Campbell), and Vesper (downtown Campbell). S&S's cocktails are definitely the strongest game of all those restaurants and I'd be there more often if it wasn't so far south (too hard to get to on weeknights after long work days.) glad we found it and highly recommend!
