Best Cocktail Bars Near San Jose and the South Bay | Eater SF

"Before diving into the cocktails at Shepherd & Sims, kick things off with a few flavor-packed, buttery dishes. The place leans upscale comfort, with feel-good American fare for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. The playfully named The Only Burger That Belongs On The Table lives up to its name: juicy, tender, and stacked. For something to share, the chicken liver mousse is creamy and punchy, topped with burnt honey gelée, poached pear, and hibiscus-pickled red onions, ready to be spread thick on grilled levain. To cut through all that richness, indulge in a couple of cocktails for a balancing act. The Blush Punch is light and citrusy, made with vodka, rhubarb, oleo sacchurum, and orange flower water. Or opt for Matcha Made in Heaven, a chilled mix of green tea vodka, passionfruit, lime, and plum bitters." - Laura Zhang

Shepherd & Sims: Look Inside Los Gatos’ New Fine Dining Restaurant - Eater SF

"Jim and Angelique Stump are no strangers to creating the kind of neighborhood restaurants diners can return to time and again — for weeknight dinners, weekend celebrations, and just about everything in between. And that’s exactly what they’re hoping to do once again with their newest project Shepherd & Sims, an upscale but approachable fine dining restaurant serving a menu that veers from pickled fried green tomatoes with buttermilk dressing to 45-day dry-aged New York steak. The restaurant is distinctly personal for the couple, its name being a mashup of both their former last names, and the menu stemming from the kinds of meals they love to share together. “The menu of this restaurant is really an example of Angelique and me, how we like to eat and what we want,” Jim says. “We want to enjoy life and we want people to enjoy life with us,” The Stump’s other restaurants include the Table in San Jose, Forthright in Campbell, and the Vesper, a cocktail lounge also in Campbell. At Shepherd & Sims, Jim has partnered with chef de cuisine Robert De La Mora to create a menu that’s rooted in Californian ingredients and infused with flavors from Mexico — the restaurant’s pork chop, for example, gets an al pastor-inspired marinade and pineapple puree crown — to Japan — with Yukon potatoes arriving alongside a kombu butter accoutrement. There’s also caviar and pate and ratatouille if diners want to take a trip to France, but one thing both Jim and Angelique stress is that they don’t want the restaurant to feel inaccessible. “I don’t want it to be a special occasion restaurant, I want to have caviar on a Tuesday afternoon,” Jim says. They intentionally chose to open in an “underserved” neighborhood, Angelique says, eschewing downtown Los Gatos and its abundance of independently owned restaurants in favor of a more out-of-the-way part of town, where the couple says most dining options are chains." - Lauren Saria

We had a party of eight, and I felt like we ordered the entire menu and sampled each other's plates. The medium rare steak looked like it was cooked correctly. However, it was a little tough. Others in our party ordered each of the oysters and said they were all delicious except for one flavor. The best dish we had was surprisingly the octopus. It was cooked perfectly, which is hard to do. The staff was the absolute best part of this entire experience. My bartender was attentive, friendly, and was able to make a Vesper martini without even flinching. Our waitress was very friendly, bubbly, timely with her attentiveness, and knew her menu. Whenever we encountered any of the staff, they were genuinely attentive and responsive Including the runners. The food prices we're about what we expected and the prices of the cocktails, we're very reasonable. Any of us in the group will be returning, and the local family that was watching all of our kids will also.

First time. HH combos are great! Shot of 4 roses. Space Dust Beer. Dinner Burger/ medium with fries = $30. Great cocktails and chill vibes and excellent bartenders like Jorge! I'm coming back!

Google
This one isn’t bad, but there could be better options for the dinner menu. I wasn’t really a big fan of the portions being served in a smaller size and a steak being chopped and turning into a burger. The service was attentive. I wish the establishment the best.

Another great dinner here. Had the chance to sit outside on the patio…it was perfect. Service was amazing. Great place to meet up with a group of friends.

There are many positive reviews so I don’t know if we ate here on an off night or what. I do like the restaurant atmosphere. It has quite nice decor, a cool blend of hip with a touch of modern rustic class. But service was slow and we felt unattended all evening. From ordering to food to water to the bill. When the waitress WAS with us, she was quite nice and attentive though. But still, wasn’t expecting an hour and a half dinner on a Monday. Food was hit or miss. Oysters, risotto scallops, and octopus were good. Chicken liver mousse was an odd combination of flavors IMO. The sweetness overpowered the savory pate characteristic. The burger was average at best. I’ve had the same at my favorite restaurant (Forthright, now closed) which used to be a sister place to here. Seemed better there. And the seafood bucatini noodles were really undercooked. Not even al dente but kind of doughy. I dunno, I was expecting so much more for the price and since they are related to Forthright.

Google
I'd call this a general restaurant serving a little bit of everything but not doing anything particularly well--American breakfasts, gyro, "dutch baby" pancake, oysters, and others. Still, on a nice sunny Father's Day early summer day, it was an enjoyable experience in the patio. The staff was very friendly. We will be returning.

Wife and I enjoyed our Valentine's dinner here. We ordered the meatballs and cauliflower appetizers, with the grilled octopus and the swordfish schnitzel being the main entrees. We finished off the evening with the tapioca pudding dessert which was delicious. Overall a solid choice. I'll check out the happy hour (2-5:30pm weekday) next time.

Google
Pros: +really fresh clean atmosphere inside +friendly wait staff +nice wine selection Cons: +\-food was average. Cold mushy charred asparagus, ny strip with gristle, (burger and fries were great) -understaffed, took awhile to get their attention -wait staff spilled a glass of wine and soda onto the table&my lap when trying to set their full drink tray down onto our table. (Comped drinks) -issue with bill that wait staff wouldn’t fix and had to be escalated to manager to fix - - they charge a 3% fee if you use a credit card to basically pass on the CC fees to you. This one is a double minus from my POV.

Yelp
We love discovering gems for both excellent food + craft cocktails in one place. Came on a Sat 4:30p and sat at the bar, no wait. Both HH menu was available until 5:30p while Dinner menu began at 5p, so we could look over everything and make our selections for 2 ppl. What we ordered: Raw Bar: $2 HH Oysters - Royal Miyagi, ordered 1/2 dozen. toppings and oysters were standard. $4.50 Oishii Oyster - I only ordered one and it was the star!! Named おいしい for good reason, wow! (Oishii means "delicious!" in Japanese) I love Pacific oysters, but that's always been my preference vs. East Coast big brine. $20 Mkt Fish Crudo - Halibut (4 pcs), pretty good tho keep in mind any crudo dish will always have some sort of fusion foodie attempt to it. the sauce wasn't bad and halibut is hard to screw up when it's fresh since the fish itself has such beautiful fat ratios. there was popcorn on the dish which was weird and didn't seem to fit, so I left it on the plate. Appetizers: $12 Chicken Liver Mousse Tartine - this dish was SO good! I will order this again next time. Our server Finn was so thoughtful to set down a serrated knife so we could split the toast. $22 Savory Beignets - very savory indeed if you are into beignets! The saltiness from prosciutto and blue cheese crumbles were balanced out by the fruit. $22 Grilled Octopus Tostada - I would not order this again, out of all the food I think this was the biggest fail. Octopus was cooked correctly but the flavor profile of the accompaniments were off - the chorizo was way too salty and totally overpowered the intricacy of the octopus' original flavor. Entree Specials: $28 Pork Al Pastor (12oz bone-in chop) - good portion, my friend enjoyed it but it was a bit dry and basic for me. The outside had a nice smokiness to it but the center tasted bland and not moist enough for my liking. $38 Smoked Duck Breast (5 oz: 2 pcs breast, leg stuffed in puffed pastry) - keep in mind it's only 5oz so it's not a ton of protein for the price, but it was executed very well. Breast was juicy, fat wrap was perfect to hold moisture of the meat yet crispy on the outside layer. Leg shreds stuffed into the puffed pastry was such a treat! Very flavorful, the dark meat went so well in the baked pastry. The street corn had a really savory, almost seafood aroma to it and it was delightful to fork up with all the drippings and duck au jus sauces on the plate. $11 HH Cocktails: Chi Chi - vibrant and refreshing Free the Khalo - really good, loved the coconut Amaretto Sour - standard but fine, good price for all the egg white prep labor I wouldn't bother w at home Blood & Sand - also standard but fine $16 House Cocktails: Pennyroyal Tea - this was the best cocktail we've had in the South Bay, created by Roya, one of the bartenders we met. tea-infused cocktails are so under-discovered here in the West; being of East Asian descent, we really appreciated how much the tea flavor shined through so strongly. The chartreuse was marvelous and the rest of the drink supported the primary aromas perfectly. I want to come back and try all the new creations Roya comes up with in the future! Here & Now - at first it tasted like a standard old fashioned, but the chocolate notes really come out especially in the side backs of the tongue, has an effect of an understated and slightly hibernated awakening of the palette. Very pleasant and good for an end of dinner type drink, like a hint of dessert for non-sweet types like me who prefer savory over sweet. It's just enough to hit the spot! Love & Happiness - Finn who took care of us throughout the meal was epic on this drink. He mentioned they had recently changed the recipe, and proactively offered to modify it in case it wasn't to our liking. He knew what he was doing, listened to our comments and re-made it to be so on point that we liked it better than the recipe set by the restaurant. Dr. Zaius - comes in a fun cup! This restaurant is from the same business group as The Table (Willow Glen), Forthright (Campbell), and Vesper (downtown Campbell). S&S's cocktails are definitely the strongest game of all those restaurants and I'd be there more often if it wasn't so far south (too hard to get to on weeknights after long work days.) glad we found it and highly recommend!

Yelp
Wow! Literally walked past a table who was just served their food and I wanted to eat their food before I even ordered mine! I saw pancakes the size of the plate! They looked perfectly griddled with a crisp but thick tenderness at the same time! I'm not a pancake guy, but would have ate all of it! There are so many things I want to eat from the brunch menu I will for sure return for another brunch and definitely a dinner. I settled for the chicken fried steak specia. It was literally perfect! I enjoyed every bit of it and was stuffed. Definitely come by and give it a try!

Yelp
Go here for great coffee, affogato, bread and wonderful mood, but being honest not for food. My feeling is very mixed -- the team is great, our waitress was so articulate and knowledgeable, the vibes in the place are very lively and welcoming, the design looks fresh and modern, however good was rather mediocre, unfortunately. I went for market fish from dinner menu and it was disappointing, full of croutons, with very thick skin and a little fish fillet inside. My husband got his burger, it was normal. Oysters were normal, but we expected more (too small, not fatty, lack charm!). Grilled octopus was good, but pairing to it avocados and beans, to our taste, did not make a good couple. For desert we had affogato and coffee -- rarely you could find such a good quality, perfect proportions and so properly served! Don't miss it.

Yelp
Pretty nice restaurant. Servers were friendly and atmosphere is alright. The food was good. I have no complaints about this restaurant. Overall a pretty nice dining experience.

Yelp
I love this place so much! The happy hour is very upscale, elevated and yet value for money. Chi chi is my favorite cocktail. The Freida kahlo is also nice but a bit strong. The food is super delicious. Personal favorite is the orange chicken/cauliflower appetizer (they make it both ways). Service is very friendly and welcoming. Definitely check this place out!

Yelp
Food 4/5 Service 3.75/5 Ambience 5/5 Aside from the liver mouse canapé, I felt that the entrees were somewhat lacking in flavor. The dishes were under seasoned and both pasta dishes (seafood bucatini and octopus ragout bucatini) were slightly under cooked. I like Al dente but this needed to be simmered in the sauce to soak up the sauce and finish cooking for a minute or two. When you serve seafood, it should include lemon on the side to add some brightness to the dish. Service level was more like a Chili's restaurant or diner, and better training/staff could help elevate the rating.

Yelp
Amazing amazing server, she was super friendly and knowledgeable! we had oysters to start and each an entree. the dessert was a little hard to eat, we had the crunch chocolate cake, the hard bit wasn't easy to break off with a fork but still really good !

Yelp
eh. so mediocre. they tried to do the asian fusion style but it's not really that great of flavors. focaccia bread service had this sauce that's like chinese bean paste + vinegar or something - not bad but it's like ugh okay i can make this too. however the bread was soft and quite bouncy (QQ) also. chicken liver mousse was overly sweet and mousse was very watery. i don't know, just not a great combo with the peanuts on top too. i was most looking forward to this dish but felt disappointed. parpadelle pasta - pasta a bit soggy. not really impressed with the peas and carrots addition but overall flavor is OK. spare ribs - not too bad of a flavor, 3 big ribs - big portion korean bbq sauce style. a little salty but quite tender. oyster was our highlight - all 3 kinds were quite tasty! forgot what exactly they were of course lol

Yelp
Nice outside eating area. We came early into service so it was nice and quiet. My son liked running outside. Food was okay, don't think anything was bad but nothing was excellent either. I prefer their sister restaurant, The Table in willow glen, but this was a fine spot.

Yelp
I have eaten here four times since they opened. The space is open and really nice. A bit on the loud side, but nice nonetheless. Service has been hit and miss. The first three times I had outstanding service, recently, the slowest and most disinterested service ever. It was like the server did not give a damn. Now the food. The first time, I had the octopus. outstanding!!! Came back again for the octopus! Wowed me a second time! Third time, risotto, which was meh, really average. I make better risotto at home. Fourth time, back to the octopus. The octopus was good, but it was served with polenta that was inedible. Weird texture, tasted bad. Should have sent it back but I am not that kinda person. So my last experience was a 2 star, but I am averaging my visits together to give them three. I really wanted to love this place. I am sad to be disappointed.

Yelp
Wanted to try something new... but Shepard and Sims didn't really do it for me. Dana was a great server and bus person too. The food runners and manager disappointed because they didn't listen. Tuna tostada was great. Coconut shrimp over cooked and under flavored. First roasted chicken was burnt... second was good but not great and wasn't half a chicken. Hotdog was okay. Pineapple upside down cake was a disappointment with so little flavor. Ambiance was more cafeteria style than upscale. The Table feels more upscale. Upside is good parking and plenty of open tables. Was left wanting...

Yelp
Last night I realized that it was the fifth time I had dined at Shepherd & Sims, so a review is long overdue. With their ever-changing menu, I wanted to have broader sample size to properly capture the experience. Like any creative team, it seems there are new dishes on each visit such as the Roasted Quail served on polenta. But they also means there are some gems that vanish from the menu like a mirage. And each dish that stays on the menu also seems to get tweaked to be slightly modified to almost a completely different dish. For instance, the duck liver mousse was served in a bowl with gelee and pears layered on top and bread on the side. Last night it was served spreaded on top of the bread with peanuts. Tragically, the corn bread with crème fraiche, candied almonds and blueberry compote is no longer on the menu. But it may return at some point, I was told. Two of the pastas I had, the Bucatini Pasta and and Seafood Pasta were very respectable and tasty. Their oysters on a half shell are compact and clean, which is all that I really want when it comes to shell fish. The Swordfish Schnitzel I had a few weeks ago was similar to the one I had at Mabel's Gone Fishing in San Diego, minus the bountiful fresh herbs. The cocktail menu is creative and fun. I had a cocktail called the Suffering Doctor, which incorporates absynth in an enormous Tiki goblet. I was feeling a little sideways by the time I stood up. I'm pretty confident that most people can find a dish they like at Shepherd & Sims. I look forward to dining there again soon.

Yelp
Shepherd & Sims is such a chic space- perfect for bridal/baby shower, drinks with the gals, catching the game at the bar or date night. Our waiter shared their focused mission on farm to table foods and everything was truly fresh and delicious. We ordered some house bread and chips and dip to go. Do not be fooled. These aren't your grocery store bread and chips. The flavors were complex and delicious! The house bread was a warm focaccia with a spicy oil pairing. The chips and dip were absolutely excellent- an elevated version of a sour cream and onion dip that puts Lays to shame. I enjoyed the smoked salmon benedict, which was also on the same focaccia. The hash brown was thick and crisp and the smoked salmon had a beautiful, rich color to it. We ended with a delicious chocolate dessert that was superb! Service was incredibly friendly and attentive. We had a larger table as we were celebrating a baby shower and the staff was courteous and ensured we were well taken care of. Our entire experience was positive and delicious!

Yelp
Came down from SF for dinner with friends in San Jose and chose Shepherd & Sims after pursuing the delicious menu online. We were three and a baby and seated quickly. Service seemed a little slow but we enjoyed our food and drinks! Lobster bisque was overly salty. We shared meatballs, ordered a tuna tostada that never arrived, but followed by excellent dishes like steak and spare ribs. Always appreciate a kid friendly place! Definitely wish we had something like this in our neighborhood in Oakland. The service was friendly but seemed slow in terms of drinks and food however I understand that is not the fault of the servers. We'll be back! I loved the flavors, a menu providing something for everyone, and I'd love to enjoy their expansive patio!!

Yelp
stopped here for a weeknight dinner. we started off with their foccacia, adorably served in a mini skillet with seasoned olive oil. it was super warm, crispy, and perfectly chewy. next we had the salad with tomato, persimmon, herbs, burrata, and candied nuts. all of the different bites of the salad were so different but went so well together. for entrees, we had mushroom risotto and octopus. the risotto was good and had much stronger flavors of citrus than mushrooms. in the octopus dish, the octopus itself was tender and nicely charred but the other elements of the dish didn't really come together for me. overall the food was tasty and had great service

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in the Bay Area. It's hard to find standard, delicious American food in the Bay Area, but this is the spot. I take family and friends here when they are visiting. 100% recommend the chips and dip. Nothing beats homemade onion dip and chips. Also, the homemade focaccia is always a hit. Comes out piping hot in the cast iron, and we always finish it. The homemade non alcoholic beverages are my favorite since I'm not a bigger alcohol drinker. Rare to find a place that makes so many yummy refreshing non alcoholic drinks like they do.

Yelp
Was not aware that The Table opened another restaurant, and so happy it's close to home. Incredibly spacious, inside and their outdoor seating. Service was great start to finish. We got there a half hour before Happy Hour was ending, and though the prices are a bit steeper than other HH's, a very large menu of drinks, food, and appetizers. Ordered a Moscow Mule, handmade potato chips with onion dip, and all 3 of us ordered the Only Burger. The potato chips and onion dip was so tasty and a steal at $5! You can also order fries for the burger or for the table for a very reasonable price as well. For $17 the burger was cooked perfectly to our liking and the awesome sauce was the perfect compliment to it. Had a secret dessert that was very decadent, chocolate mouse and roasted marshmallows. Their affogato was incredibly tasty as well. Would love to come back and try their pasta and other dishes as well.

Yelp
Second time here. Love the ambiance! Huge indoor dining area, nice and clean, very elegant and classy. Food has been very consistent and great tasting. First time having brunch here. Service was prompt and friendly. Coffee was good. I got the pulled pork omelette and it was also very good, I was just expecting more of the bbq style pulled pork and not the Mexican style. The hash browns were just melt in your mouth good. They might have used butter to cook it. Mmm. Also ordered the Dutch Baby (not pictured) which we got with all the fruits and stuff on the side. Very tasty as well but a bit small, it was an individual size, not really good for sharing unless you ordered multiple. Will definitely go back.

Yelp
Great burger, poke bowl, and service. Also, fantastic root beer. Pricey but not for the neighborhood - and totally worth it.

Yelp
Was just here for my birthday with my parents. I still love the interior design, but the food has gone downhill since my first couple visits. 6/10 - Octopus was mostly tender, but it was still on the dry side. 5/10 - Cauliflower came drenched in sauce and overly cooked, so it was falling apart and too soft. Too much dried fruit toppings on top. 3/10 - NY steak was low quality. The meat was gritty and dry. Even for medium rare, it wasn't very tender. Felt like cafeteria meat. The best part of the dish was the unique baked potato that came with salmon roe on top. 1/10 - Sole. The fish was their special of the night, but it was the worst dish. Fish was dry, sauce was weird (tasted like a miso, bbq sauce combo). 8/10 - The shepherd and sims salad was their best dish. Fresh and light on the dressing. The waiter was informed it was my birthday on the reservation, but sad that they didn't give me any birthday dessert. I know it's not expected, but it's always a nice gesture. Our waiter was just cold and curt the whole night. He said "happy birthday" quickly while dropping the bill on our table. Thanks, dude.

Yelp
Had lunch here with a group of friends during the NFL West Conference championship. Food lifted us up even when our team lost. Most of my friends ordered from the Brunch plates, but wanted to try the Seafood Pasta. It was satisfying and filling, taste and serving size. The seafood was tasty but not overwhelming. For the dessert I tried the "Tis the Season" --walnut cake, roasted chocolate mousse, with butternut rum and kettle corn. It was so good. Perfect dessert to seal the meal. The place has a nice wooden/ rustic relaxing vibe. Definitely enjoyed the meal. Good place to dine with friends or families.

Yelp
Ambiance- really cute inside. Like a very modern diner. Very spacious. Service - just OK. Our waitress only came by to take our order. We didn't really see her for the rest of our meal. Food - pretty horrible. if they want this place to survive, they are going to need a kitchen revamp. Fried chicken bites - dry, mushy, soggy Hh oysters- too big, not that great. Tuna tataki - on the fishy side. it was sitting in a pool of what I think is beet juice, which looked pretty disgusting. Chicken liver - this was the best thing we had all night. Blue cheese martini - tasty and well made. $180 for appetizers for 2.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots to go grab some happy hour bites with my pup. We love to come sit on a summer day out on the dog friendly patio. We love the lounge areas but have also enjoyed the outdoor tables. The staff is always great and brings our pup a bowl of water. Few of our favorites are the house made chips, French fries, and the burger. The cocktails are all delicious as well! I personally go off menu with the New York sour and they always make it perfectly.

Yelp
I came here with a group of fellow Yelpers so we were intent on trying as many dishes as possible, we ended up going with the cornbread, chicken liver mousse, and the banana beignets paired with caviar. I also ordered the bucatini pasta for myself. The cornbread and chicken liver mousse were fine, but the banana beignets were a bit confusing. Alone they were good, but the pairing with the slightly salty/savory caviar didn't really go along with the sweet beignet. The real standout in my opinion was the bucatini pasta. It was clear that they used homemade pasta and it was cooked just right with a good amount of al dente. The dish was also piled high with mussels and massive prawns - with just a hint of lemon to help cut the fattiness of the creamy sauce. This dish was what pushed Shepherd and Sims over to a 4/5 for me. My friend got the fried quail which looked good as well but I'll be saving that for next time!

Yelp
Our new found brunch gem! We love our neighborhood The Table in Willow Glen and this is spot is from the same family! Similar offerings with The Table but also they have their very own delicious original menu items. We love going to weekend brunch here as we can get a reservation and easy parking. We love their chill atmosphere. We also frequent the outdoor seating. Like The Table, you can never go wrong with the Chilaquiles Rojos (they have chicken here vs. pork at The Table) and the Fra'mani Rosemary Ham Benedict. Sometimes they'll have off menu specials so make sure you ask! Family friendly place, we brought our 2 kiddos (small kid and a baby). My oldest was admiring a floral arrangement one of the host was doing, the host gave a mini version to my daughter! Try their cocktails as well!

Yelp
Had great service and a great time dining here on a weekend night. Wish I had a photo of the inside to share, but it looked very sleek, with a beautiful bar inside the restaurant. We ordered the bread service to start and was very impressed by the focaccia. All their food here is fresh and local, and they have a lot of options with people for dietary restrictions as well. While their food is on the pricier side, I think it is definitely worth it given its quality. I definitely recommend that everyone in the South Bay should try this restaurant at least once!

Yelp
The restaurant's charming and intimate setting provides the perfect backdrop for a delightful meal. The menu boasts a diverse selection of dishes, each crafted with care and brimming with flavor. The attentive service adds to the overall experience, making it a fantastic choice for a special night out or a casual dinner with loved ones. Shepherd and Sims is a true standout in the Los Gatos dining scene, offering an exceptional culinary journey for all who visit. Please try their Parisian Gnocchi!

Yelp
Placed in the center of a strip mall with plenty of parking this eclectic warmly designed with indoor/outdoor seating is very welcoming. Started off with the 2 out of 4 oyster choices (Buckley Bay & Sea Nymph) and they were accompanied with a selection of cocktail sauce, fresh horseradish, hot mustard & mignonette which all paired nicely with the briny Buckley and sweeter Sea Nymph. Beignets & Caviar- sounded good on the menu as the description had more than what was present. The beignets were dense the porcini mushroom flavor was non-existent and caviar to be bland. The creme fraiche was also watery and did nothing to the flavor profile; this was a definite over priced ($25) dissappointment. Black Cod- tender and seared perfectly over white beans and spicy velvety tomato based sauce. Octopus - grilled and charred served with a variety of pickled vegetables which was not a great pairing but the octopus was well worth it. Pappardelle- silky and served with a rich ragu of braised shredded duck; a great dish for sharing. Service was 5 star and will definitely return to try the cocktails and the other seasonal dishes in the outdoor setting.

Yelp
&-excellent food, excellent service, pretty restaurant-& I would not expect at a place like this right next to Whole Foods, but it is Los Gatos. What I liked: Plenty of parking in the lot Great atmosphere, pretty, date night worthy Amazing menu, lots of different types of food without overdoing it on the number of items on the menu Excellent service, personable servers Ordered: Salmon, eggs, Benedict Summertime oysters Need to order potato chips and onion dip The dip was exquisite. Who would've ever thought upscale version of onion dip. The chips were homemade and excellent. Freshly sliced and fried they were crispy. The oysters came with four different garnishes. Perfect combination of spicy and saucy. My friend brought me for my birthday and graduation, and it was certainly worthy of celebration. Highly recommend for groups, birthdays, something fun, lots of great food, and a good atmosphere.

Yelp
We had dinner at Shepherd and Sims on a Tuesday evening. The location is in Los Gatos and parking was easy. It's near a Whole Foods. The place was relatively empty and we were seated immediately. Service was excellent, friendly, and efficient. We ordered the duck fat hashbrowns which were like next level, tater tot cakes with a deviled egg, topping and caviar. They were absolutely delicious. You get three in an order and you could probably eat 10 of these. We ordered the fall salad, which was absolutely delicious and had such a complex array of flavors. It was light and decadent and sweet and savory all at the same time. I would order that again. We split that salad between the two of us and it was plenty. Then we ordered our mains. One person ordered fish and I ordered the Bettini with seafood. The Buccini tasted excellent, the pasta was a little too al dente, but still very good. We ended the meal with a chocolate mousse cake to share. the cake was absolutely delicious. The whipped cream mixture was a little off tasting. We couldn't tell if it was made with goat cheese or something else. We did not eat that. I would say it almost tasted like the whipped cream mixture had turned, but I can't believe they would have served that, so it may just be a preference thing. Overall, the experience was wonderful and I would definitely go back again. They had so many different menu options. My only disappointment was that they had taken the pistachio cake off the menu that evening, and that would've been my preferred choice of desserts..

Yelp
Love the breakfast food, burgers and drinks! The burger was one of the best burgers I have ever tasted- high quality here! Been here a couple times with family when visiting and both times have enjoyed the food, drinks and atmosphere! The service is always very helpful and polite. Great for family outings or date nights- and best yet, the parking is great.

Yelp
I was super excited to try out this place as it's been in my bookmarked list for a very very long time. Overall, I would give it a 3.5/5 stars. The restaurant itself is super cute and nicely decorated. I can totally see how it would be a popular brunch spot. The service was also great - our server was very kind and friendly and kept checking up on us. However, the food was nothing mind blowing for the price. I came with some friends and we shared the banana beignets, chicken liver mousse, and cornbread. I ordered the parisian gnocchi as my entree. 1. Banana beignets with caviar: The banana beignets with caviar didn't pair well at all. It was a very confusing dish. I really liked the consistency of the beignet, but the flavor of the banana and caviar and the sauce made it feel all over the place. The creme fraiche was also difficult to eat with the beignet so it felt more like a garnish/decoration than a part of the dish. 2. Chicken liver mousse: This dish was pretty good. It's a very heavy dish and I felt like we definitely needed a lot more bread to be able to enjoy it. It was nice of our server to give us an extra serving of bread for this, but I felt like it may have needed even more since it felt really heavy to each too much of it in one bite. 3. Cornbread: The corn bread was good, I liked the blueberry compote that came with it. They probably put the creme fraiche while the cornbread was still pretty hot so it kind of just melted right when it got to our table. 4. Pairisian gnocchi: The dish I was most excited to try but regretted it after the first bite. It could just be that I was expecting it to taste different from what it actually was. The gnocchi texture was not one I was familiar with. It kind of reminded me of a tater tot consistency, instead of the light fluffy and chewy consistency I'm used to in gnocchi. This gnocchi was dense and very potato-y. The sauce was also unique, not really my favorite. I saw my friends enjoy their other dishes a lot more so I wish I had gotten something different for my entree. Overall, their dishes and flavors were unique, but my wallet cried a bit and I didn't feel like it was worth it.

Yelp
More like a 3.5 rounded up to 4 based on previous visits. Stopped by on a Saturday towards the end of happy hour. We were seated inside immediately. However we were waiting for about 20 minutes before someone came to take our order. There was a waitress in our section but for some reason she helped out the 2 other tables and seemingly skipped over us. Not sure if she assumed that we were being helped by someone else. By the time we flagged down a server, happy hour had ended. Our waiter, Dane, was apologetic and allowed us to order off the happy hour menu. I totally understand that it was not his fault and we appreciated his hustle as he was helping out several other tables. Drinks were tasty and reasonably priced for the area. The food we ordered included some interesting flavor combinations. The only weird thing was that there were several substitutions/omissions of ingredients. Other reviews have mentioned this as well. The smoky potato appetizer was not smoky and did not include chorizo as listed in the menu. The broccolini came with cilantro instead of fresh mint which in my opinion completely changed the dish. The bucatini pasta was DELICIOUS and I definitely recommend this dish. The prawns were huge and the mussels were cooked perfectly. I would dine here again for the cocktails and pasta.

Yelp
Mediocre food and terrible service. First impression when walking up to the restaurant and walking in seems like it would be a nice place to eat. The hostess at the front was not friendly and just rubbed us the wrong way. Took forever to finally see our server. Food took 30 minutes to come out. The food runner was probably the nicest and most attentive and she should have received the entire tip amount. Our server was just bleh and should look for a different job. Gonna pass on this one and find a better place to eat.

Yelp
Please come to this place you won't regret it! The ambiance is so chic and the food was amazing! We started with the ahi tuna tostada and half dozen oysters. I got the bucatini pasta and my boyfriend got the parisian gnocchi. Both dishes were super rich but nailed the flavors. I want to try everything on the menu! The service was good and our waiter was super sweet. She had great recommendations.

Yelp
i have been here 4 times... and the most recent time service was kind ehh... coming from someone in the restaurant industry back in nyc expectations are unfortunately a tad high, they should train on basic service, touching the table every 10-15 minutes, serving from the right side, removing from the left. i get it that it is a casual restaurant but the prices say something else. We have come here multiple times because it is conveniently located... Host are a bit on lala land i may say, I asked for a high chair for my kid host said they are getting it... everything seems to take long. I asked for paper for the kids to draw, and they completely forgot. Now on to the food. Food is good. decent. some plates better than others. very inconsistent. But when its good.. its good. servers do not know much about the wine menu or what pairs good with what. I would put that on the shoulders of the managers. but again food is decent. some plates are extraordinary.. some or mediocre. review is avg all my experiences i have had here.

Yelp
A friend suggested this place for their happy hour, so we met there at 2 PM on a Saturday. We didn't set up a reservation and there were plenty of tables outside (and also inside). Their patio is nicely heated and very comfortable. Also parking is easy - this is in a large strip mall near a Whole Foods so it was easy to find parking. I really enjoyed my cocktails a lot - I had the Freeda Kahlo which was kind of mezcal/reposado cocktail with ginger flavors and also the Sidecar. One of my friends didn't like that it had mezcal in the former, and it wasn't listed on the description, because she didn't like that smoky-flavor, but it didn't bother me. The other drinks looked good as well, though they did put the sparkling wine in a regular wine glass which is quickly becoming a pet peeve of mine! You put sparkling wine in a special glass for a reason. :) The food was good - I had the hot dog that was covered with potato chip bits. I think I like the hot dogs at Orchard City Kitchen's Happy Hour so much that it influenced me to order this. The burger and salad that others ordered look good as well. The loaded fries were pretty delicious - and a huge serving that I should have shared with someone. A friend got plain fries that looked a bit more manageable. It's definitely enough to share and could suffice as a full meal. Service was very diligent and helpful in getting us more drinks and refills of water.

Yelp
Tip: ask to be seated in Dane's section! My friend and I were fortunate enough to have been sat in his section earlier this week. His service is among the best I've seen in quite some time. Most food and beverage servers are pretty good in my experience, but Dane takes his profession to another level. We found him to be friendly and knowledgeable, with a fun sense of humor, caring, and highly competent. Food is always delicious here, too. You cannot go wrong. That said, I think the cauliflower (the green curry dish) could have been kept in the steamer for an additional minute+ or so. It's loud there because it is *always* busy, so you're better off making a reservation lest you be out in the cold!

Yelp
Maybe I had the wrong menu items? Popped in for a quick lunch on a rainy Monday and grabbed a seat at the bar. The bartenders were great. Super friendly and attentive. I had looked at the menu online so I knew what I wanted and placed my order. The interior is modern and light. Good local vibe but kind of noisy for those hard of hearing or just noise sensitive. I did love hearing the kitchen staff calling out orders and getting their hustle on. It was a busy lunch rush and they were hammering it out. What I ordered: Parker House Rolls - these are cute and come served in a cast iron skillet, sprinkled with sea salt and served with soft delicious butter. Although the rolls were soft and fluffy, they didn't have much flavor. Shrimp Louie - this was a miss for me. The shrimp had Zero flavor and the dressing was far from traditional. All of it could have benefited from some black pepper and a good squeeze of fresh lemon. There were other things on the menu that I'd like to taste so I'll give this place a second try in hopes that I just didn't get the right things on the first visit. It happens.

Yelp
This place used to be so good! When they first opened the food was outstanding and the drinks were fun. It's really gone downhill. The last two times we have been were super disappointing. Bland or way too salty or undercooked food, meh drinks. I think it's only still popular because it has a cute design and good vibes. We've been here many times since they opened and after our two most recent experiences, we sadly won't be coming back.

Yelp
First time here and I'll be back! Service for a Friday lunch was spectacular. Appreciated a table checkin by the manager who was super friendly. The food was fab. Definitely recommend the Ahi poke salad, yummy!!!! My friend had the Rueben sandwich and it was nice and meat heavy. She took half home. We sat on the cozy patio under a heat lamp, the inside restaurant was very appealing. Looking forward to a return visit soon.

Yelp
A friend and I had an early happy hour dinner here recently and really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. In the late afternoon, they have a happy hour menu that is a subset of the regular menu. We split several items and really enjoyed everything. We started with a Moscow Mule and Gin Gimlet for drinks. My Moscow Mule was very tasty. Nice sharp ginger flavor. My friend liked her Gin Gimlet. For for food, we did the following: shepherd & sims salad: organic lettuces - mizuna - arugula - red onion - fennel - heirloom tomatoes - avocado - potatoes - zesty red wine vinaigrette. Very tasty. Loved all the toppings, nice crisp & fresh lettuce, tasty dressing, not too heavy. the only burger: house ground chuck & brisket - NY sharp white cheddar - bread & butter pickles - lettuce - bacon onion jam - awesome sauce. This was delicious. Nicely cooked meat. Very flavorful, good grill flavor. Great toppings. tempura local rockfish & veggies: roasted garlic & yuzu aioli. Very tasty too. Several pieces of fish and lots of veggies. A good variety of veggies. Flaky fish. Not too greasy. Nice dipping sauce. We also each had a glass of the house wine. I had white, my friend had red. We both liked the wines they offered that night. Service was good. We were served by several different waiters. All helpful. Food and drinks came quickly. There was a mistake on our check and they fixed it right away. We sat at a table on the outside patio. Overall a really nice meal and a lovely spot.

Yelp
Ordered the empanadas. Waitress said I get 3, I got 2 and they were small. For $24.00?? My ice tea was empty and not once did the waitress ask if I'd like a refill. Not impressed.

Yelp
A beautiful restaurant and a fairly expensive menu, but I was pretty content with my experience here overall. I came during happy hour with a group of friends (automatic 20% gratuity charge). To my surprise, the "happy hour" is not discounted whatsoever... but instead, it is a limited specials menu that is only served between 2 pm to 5:30 pm. Here's what I ordered: + Tempura Local Rockfish & Veggies (5/5): This is served with a delicious roasted garlic & yuzu aioli. Light and crispy batter that is fried perfectly! The rockfish was milky and succulent. It was so tender and soft inside. The best part is that it wasn't too salty! Not your traditional Japanese tempura though. + Peach Fizz (1/5): I definitely did not like this. I wanted a non-alcoholic beverage, so I went for the peach vanilla soda concoction. It didn't taste like either peach or vanilla at all! It tasted like carbonated lime juice! I asked the waitress for some extra peach syrup, which helped I suppose. + Steamed Mussels (4/5): The light buttery wine sauce was simply just that! Not too flavorful or complex. However, that's all you really need for mussels and sourdough bread. They were cooked well and it was a decent portion for $16!
