The Best African Restaurants In Miami - Miami - The Infatuation

"For over 20 years, Sheri has been one of the few restaurants serving African food in Miami. Specifically, Nigerian food waiting patiently behind plexiglass to be scooped up. Daily specials rotate but you can pretty much always expect jollof rice, egusi soup, pepper soups, and assorted meats like tender chicken and goat—as well as sides of fufu so good you should get two orders. To get inside, ring the bell at the door. There are plenty of tables if you want to eat in the dining room, but the food is all available for takeout as well. And there’s a small selection of Nigerian pantry items for sale by the register, too." - ryan pfeffer, mariana trabanino, virginia otazo

The food was very delicious. I order the goat with rice and plaintain. My husband ordered cow foot with rice and plantain. The apple juice was delicious. The server was nice. I'd recommend this place to anyone who's looking for authentic Nigerian food...

Mrs. Sherri is an amazing cook if you're looking for an African flare. Very relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy your food. Me and my boyfriend make sure to go at least once a month and sometimes bring others to join.

Google
Their soups are tasty. Their stew, not so much. Nice customer service from the service staff. No pricing transparency makes inflated bills more suspicious. I cannot tip when it looks like I was already overcharged. The area is questionable. The availability of Nigerian food restaurants is limited so this is an ok option.

Best restaurant very good taste 👅 with fish curry rice was amazing.

Google
My partner and I visited Miami from Colorado Springs and we were hungry for a Nigerian food. We found this restaurant and we enjoyed everything we ate. The vegetable tasted like a party soup and it was very hot! We had to do some take outs too! This is a restaurant you need to consider when in need of Nigerian food that tastes like home-made meal! Very neat and spacious space too!

Google
I never leave negative comments for my people but, this restaurant is horrible. Please don’t eat there food. I’m on vacation and was craving my culture food. Ordered from this restaurant and my daughter and I got extremely sick. I ordered okra stew. As you can see in my picture this looks like fish soup no okra. Crazy Part is okra is a cheap vegetable how can you make a soup that you consider okra with no okra. I’m writing this message in the emergency room. Please don’t eat here, something about there kitchen isn’t sanitary. I was better off eating the Hispanic food. Way better choice than this. I’ve eaten from black owned soul food restaurants and lots of Hispanic restaurants all the food was good in Florida. The day I try my own people’s food they messed up my entire vacation because I feel sick as a dog after only 3 bites. My daughter only took 1. I believe I got food poisoning from this soup. If I can give this restaurant 0 stars I will. The biggest disappointment in African culture. Please share all over social media so people can never come here again.

Google
Our first place to eat in Miami and it did not disappoint! Great food and great service! They were very welcoming.

Google
The first time I ordered from this restaurant, one item was missing from my order and the second time, they mixed up and messed up my order. I was a little upset but I just let it slide cos the food tasted good. I've ordered about 3-4 times after that and it's been good so far. I however have to point out that the peppered gizzard which is supposed to be mixed in pepper sauce and be spicy isn't at all what it's supposed to be. It's more like gizzard mixed in regular stew and isn't spicy. In my most recent order, I wanted two bowls of the gizzard but what I got was gizzard mixed in stew and wasn't spicy at all, I was quite disappointed about this. Pls let peppered gizzard be peppered gizzard and not stewed gizzard!!!

Yelp
My favorite African restaurant.in miami for almost 20 yrs, it's takes me back home I enjoy the egusi and my favourite is the vegetable soup with stew, thanks sherri

Yelp
Ordered Via Uber Eats. 1hr for delivery on a Friday around Noon. Food was flavorful, good portion and definitely with the money spent. good service. can't speak much in the ambiance because i order via Ubereats

Yelp
Mostly oily with no flavor. I didn't like that the food is sitting out Buffett style, you order, then they microwave your food. It wasn't until I got home that I had concerned since I got chicken. My Meal: Jollof rice with chicken, okra soup, fufu The chicken. The chicken was tough. It left me wondering if it was old. The fufu was too sticky. The rice was ok. A little oily due to the "gravy" from the chicken. Of the food I got, the okra soup was the most flavorful, but not by a lot.

Yelp
Ok, so I went to this location with some friends. Because I wanted to try some nigerian food. I have been to Nigerian restaurants in Miami. But I want to try this location now. The first thing I loved about it was that it felt like I was in Nigeria. The smells, the interior, the Nigerian household products for sell and the family helping out in the restaurant. All of this was nice but the main reason I was here was for the food. We had a lot, fufu, egusi, eba, jollof, steamed fish and puff puff. It was so amazing and bursting with flavor. Honestly just based off the food alone this is my new favorite spots in Miami for Nigeran food. Also the cashier was extra nice when she found out it was my friend's first time having Nigerian food
google avatar

Renee R.

Yelp
I came here for my mom. She's been wanting to try egusi, fufu and jollof rice for a while now and finally found a place. When I walked it the restaurant I was greeted by a woman who was helpful and answered all of my questions with no problem. My mom enjoyed everything. Her only complaint was how oily The egusi was. She wants to try okra soup next! I paid $23 total for everything.

Yelp

Yelp
So damned rude. Came to try different food and did not get very far at all! Why? Let's just say I don't know about the food and the lady serving was so rude. I was asking questions and she was oh God! So I left...not going to eat what I don't know..what a shame..
google avatar

Mad Y.

Yelp
Amazing place. We were greeted by a man And immediately they took care of us. The restaurant is big and clean. The lady who works there gave us big portions. I really like this place and will definitely be back. Customer service 10/10 food 10/10! And they also have a store that sells Nigerian products, which is also a plus.

Angelina C.

Yelp
Sheri had excellent customer service!! Food was amazing!! Would definitely recommend!!!

Yelp
This was my first time trying this dish. And it was really good. I'll be honest I'm not sure if I was eating beef or oxtail, it was still delicious, but just a bit fatty on the pieces for me vs having more meaty pieces.

Michelle W.

Yelp
Great Africa food, this is my spot..My daughter and I love the goat pepper soup... so many nice dishes...fufu, aww the best...Mama Sheri thank u every time

Yelp
Honey! Let me just say that I have been missing out! Ok! After some serious scrolling on Tiktok, I came across this new trend of trying/eating African food. Of the various videos, people were either eating egusi soup and fufu or okra soup and fufu. I opted for the egusi soup simply because from the videos I saw the okra was slimy. So after seeing this, of course the first thing I do is hop on yelp so see if there are any local African/nigerian food restaurants. Lo and behold there were 3 between Miami and Broward! Won't he do it?! Initially I was going to try a restaurant in the North Miami area but because of where I was and the laziness in me of not wanting to drive, I settled for Sheri. What's even crazier is that I have passed this restaurant plenty of times and always wondered what type of food they sold. Now if you are too bougie for whole in the wall establishments, this is not the restaurant for you. This is a half restaurant, half store. The food is out and uncovered but keeps the temperature. I saw that someone commented that they didn't like the fact that they warm your food up in the microwave. I asked her not to and the lady didn't complain. She actually explained why she microwaved it but I told her it was fine. To my surprise the food was piping hot. Especially the fufu. Now one thing I will say is that based on the videos I saw, this restaurant does not give you much egusi. Instead what they do is put about two spoonfuls of egusi and offer you a meat. You get to choose from beef, goat or chicken. Out of the three, the beef looked the best. Not to mention, I don't eat goat. The meat and the egusi was delicious. However honestly if I had to choose, I would have preferred more egusi and no meat. The fufu I discovered is nothing but pounded yam (potato). I even watched a video of how it was made on Tiktok. From the videos, I assumed it was some kind of wet dough. Just based off of pure appearance alone. It doesn't have a taste when eaten alone but with the egusi it is amazing! I am definitely going to try out the other restaurant just to see if they give more food. However on days when I don't feel like driving there, I will definitely come back here.

Yelp
This restaurant has very good food! I had the fried chicken with fried rice and plantains. Everything was cooked perfectly. My husband had the fish with veggies and pounded yam. We both enjoyed the food very much. The lady the served us was very pleasant. We would definitely come back here if we lived in this area.

Meliyah R.

Yelp
I found a zip tie in the FuFu but besides that everything was good! I don't know if that's going over my head but the service was nice too! Made me feel at home
google avatar

Yelp
Don't believe the hours. They may or may not be open. I would call ahead before making the drive.

Yelp
Fufu was nasty People were laughing Unpleasant atmosphere Expensive Fly's were everywhere

Yelp
Simply delicious Nigerian food ! If you in the Miami metropolitan area look no further ! It doesn't get better then this. The food is made fresh and displayed buffet style ! All your favorite Nigerian delicacies are here ! I always ask what's this what's this ... I bet the owner wonders if I'm Nigerian lol I'm not ... I'm from Mozambique but I love all African culture and food! Give it a try ... you won't regret
google avatar

Jennie A.

Yelp
The food is 5 star, I can't even lie. The issue is pricing. She doesn't have a pricing menu available and it seems as if she charges you what she feels like for the day. Last time I was there we order egusi soup and efo with pounded yam / I swear it was $45 for those deliciously small meals. I recommend having visible menu and pricing on all your meals and products you sell to make it fair and better customer experience

Yelp
Good authentic Nigerian food. The joloff rice is perfect. The okra sauce was good. The beef was good. The fish was good. Didn't try the chicken. Next time I will. The turkey was good as well. Gives plenty of rice. Not as spicy as I would like but it was good.

Yelp
I came in and prepaid $32 to be able to pick up 20 puff puffs the next day at 8 am for a class. When I arrived the next day I waited until 8:30, at which time I could not wait any longer without being late to class. No one ever showed up to open the store. I called over 20 times through out the day and no one ever answered the phone. Not only did this restaurant steal from me, but my grade suffered as a result of not bringing in the food I was required to bring. This was a horrible experience. I would give 0 stars if I could.

Richard P.

Yelp
Great food one of the best African food in Miami I love it from the fufu down to egusi can't be wrong

Yelp
Great place food awesome customer service great atmosphere awesome I 100% recommend this restaurant

Gloria C.

Yelp
All was good did not like the meat was very tough, but everything else was good. I should have gotten it with no meat
google avatar

Marcie S.

Yelp
I can't say enough good things!!! All the food is amazing and wish I could eat it everyday!
google avatar

Lara F.

Yelp
I truly don't know where to begin. The people working there were very friendly. Place looked clean. Food could've been better. The jollof rice reminded me of the texture of brown rice and it didn't have a lot of flavor. Food is microwaved before served which I didn't mind but the soup was just bland. I will not be visiting again, not worth the money to me.
google avatar

Kellen C.

Yelp
Egusi and okra were good, they sell the big bottle of maggi and it was like $10 awesome find service is Nigerian style like the food. Make sure to leave a review.

Lezlie B.

Yelp
Egusi with fish and added assorted meat. So delicious i always get with the fried fish and pay a bit extra for more meat because i love variety

Yelp
I'm so happy I was able to find this place. About an hour ago, I went to another Nigerian Resturant in the area to find the doors locked and the owner out on an errand. Having driven 30 minutes and not wanting to waste my gas, I waited 30 minutes for the owner to return, to no avail. Needless to say, I didn't leave a good review. I found this Resturant on google and I'm glad I gave them chance. That Egusi soup was very good. She mixed it with stew and gave me some pounded yam. It's $15 dollars for Egusi (a bit steep if you ask me) but it tasted good. The only problem I had was the fact that they microwave your food to serve, and do it in front of you. All of the food it sitting out, and when you order thru microwave it and give it to you. Other than that, don't hesitate to buy some Nigerian food from here. The portion sizes are decent. I will be back when I need my Nigerian Food Fix.

Yelp
Recently there was a talk thread of Nigerian food on Yelp, which prompted my curiosity. I love adding pins on my imaginary culinary map. Sheri is right off Palmetto in a much bigger location than expected. I see a buffet counter with trays of food, behind glass. After assisting another customer the lady asked me what I wanted. I explained to her that I've never tried Nigerian food and not sure what to try. This is my standard phrase when visiting restaurants with unfamiliar cuisines. Usually I get a brief intro. If lucky I get an enthusiastic response with offers of samples. However, this lady sure didn't seem thrilled. She was probably rolling her inner eyes. I pointed to a dish with chunks of meat and bones and asked her what that is. "Meat" came the answer. Geez who would have thought! I pointed to another with what appears to be some grains. "Is this rice?" "No." "Vegetables?" "No." I asked her how much are the dishes, she said $12, but I was unsuccessful figuring out what goes into the $12? Any two entree? Three? With rice? Rice only? She held up a lump wrapped in aluminum foil and said, this is $12 but I had no idea what that is. And unfortunately it's not a barrier of limited English. After a few very awkward and unsuccessful rounds of twenty questions, she asked, "where are you from?" Not in the friendly, curious manner about how I came to this place, but rather a rebuking, don't you know you don't belong here challenge. Tired of my questions, she told me to look at the menu, which is helpfully filled with foreign words and no description or picture. I am amazed at myself... it was a couple of minutes after she walked back into the kitchen that I realized: 1. She is not coming back out. 2. It is not rude for me to just turn and go. Well, if you are looking for a review for the food - sorry, I can't tell you anything about it. Maybe another day I'll muster up courage to try another Nigerian restaurant.

uwitonda m.

Yelp
They have the best choices and it would recommend to go early bc they run out of the popular food fast. The place is big inside but no outside. The price is fair plus they give big portions. Best African place to eat in tow

Mitchie M.

Yelp
The best Nigerian food in South Florida. I drive all the way from Boca for the pounded yam, egusi soup which is so good, I pay a little bit more for extra soup. The joloff rice and spicy goat is extremely addictive. Been hooked for 10 years.

L T.

Yelp
Customer service is terrible! She claims to know nothing about the $7 lunch coupon (on her own website!) nor the $25 restaurant.com certificate. The food looked as if it had been in the warming plates for a long time. My teen said it looked old and to lets get something else, especially if paying full price. She will lose a lot of business with the attitude and people not wanting to try something new at full price. Only gave an extra star because we didnt eat there.
google avatar

Martin A.

Yelp
My first experience in a African restaurant in Florida....the ‍ reminded me of Mama Puts at home (Nigeria). Very good service. Helpful staff. They seemed very interested in providing good customer service to keep me coming back (which I will :). Clean space with a small grocery store in the back for indomie, Titus, etc. Will definitely recommend to family, friends and everyone else. Their puff puff is even better than mine which is saying something :).
google avatar

Jean P.

Yelp
Very good food. Must try, food was on point especially the pounded yam and igusi soup

Yelp
I tried to give this place the benefit of the doubt, but I should've know that based on my first visit I should've never visited again. I feel horrible for even giving the place the attendant on social medicine because what the hell. So my first coming here It wasn't the best experience but I could tolerate it. The attitudes were blasphemy but I let it slide because I try to support others. I enjoyed the food and even with the terrible service I received the first time I was willing to go again for the second time even though I was literally dreading going because I just knew I was going to get some type of attitude which people don't want to have to go through like it's a pandemic outside theirs already a lot going on in people's life just for them to get someone to fill up and get attitude while doing it extremely uncalled for . So I call just like I did the first time and the guy tells me that I need to come in and order because their not taking phone orders. I found this odd bug went along with it anyway just to get their which isn't close to my house and for them to serve me literally cold food. And when I say cold I mean FROZEN. I asked why was the food still frozen and the lady is going to tell me with an attitude that I can go home and warm it up in the Microwave. Excuse you? Who told you I was going home? Nonetheless why would you serve people frozen food? Never again! They lack professionalism and should big be running a business because they are not nice to people. If I could give them a 0/10 I would after that stunt the pulled.

Yelp
A few hours ago, I came inside Sheri's since I was out of breathe so I sat in there for awhile. After about a minute or two, a woman came out with a pot of cooked meat. She asked if I was okay and I told her that I was just sitting there trying to catch my breathe since I had a lot of walking that I had to do for today. She then asked if I wanted a water and said, "yes, please" to which she gave me a water and I thanked her for it. After drinking about 1/4 of the water, I felt some air, which made me jump. I looked up and she actually turned on the fan and told me that the air will help regulate my body, which I thanked her for. She was the most generous and helpful lady I have ever met in the area and I definitely plan on ordering from Sheri's next time I am there.

Maria M.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have been here a few times, and we just keep coming back because, the ladies & workers there are very friendly; so nice. The portions are very filling, they have enjoyable music playing, & drinks to accompany your meal; best drink to compliment your food is a nice & cold Malt Drink.
google avatar

Ashley R.

Yelp
Going to be honest, have never eaten here! But I am an Uber driver and a woman just paid $28 each way to come here and pick up food. If their customers are down to pay more than $50 just for a ride here, I will definitely be coming back to try it!!!

Yelp
I wanna give one star but there has to be something good on the menu. I'm not familiar with African food so I didn't know what my dish should look like. I ordered the Goat Pepper Soup and saw some meat and bones in a stew with a mash potato like ball on another plate. I didn't ask questions because I wasn't sure what the dish would look like. Definitely didn't taste like Caribbean style goat I'm used to. And it wasn't goat because it wasn't what I ordered they gave me the wrong dish. It was just ok. It was beef but had a lil fishy taste. Still kinda decent tasting tho or maybe I was just hungry. I like that the kitchen is open and you can see the food simmering. When I first walked in the gentleman sitting in the chair seemed to have some negative energy in his tone of voice and speaking but I bypassed it just thinking it might be the accent that's throwing me off. As I was leaving I had a text and call and forgot to pay on my way out...usually I pay first at places unless it's full service dining and was on the phone so it slipped my mind. I'm across the street and half way down the block and the guy and the cook are yelling about the money. I walk over and say I'm sorry slipped my mind but he starts yelling and going off about me trying to skip out on the payment. Buddy, I was across the street and gone, if I really wanted to do I could have kept walking. Then the lady complains about giving me a $15 dollar plate and that it cost more than what I ordered but she'll still charge me $10. My meal should be free since you messed my order up with only 4 people in the place. I was gonna go back but the negative energy from the people working canceled my idea of a second trip.

Eduardo T.

Yelp
The food at Sheri is amazing, buffet style and fresh. If you in the Miami area this is your place to go for Nigerian food. Many choices on the menu. Long standing restaurant serving the community for over 7 years. The restaurant serves also as an African Store. There are a few delicacies that you can grab to-go. I like everything they have on the menu, specially their Egusi, Okra and Jollof rice.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
I have never had Nigerian food but I am sure there is something so much better out there. Me and my husband ended up here accidentally and it was too late to head over to the restaurant we initially intended to visit in brickell and decided to still give it a try. So about Sheri, if you like food that's not at least partially made to order this is your place. The food stays out and you chose what you want. My husband got goat and yellow rice and I got chicken and yellow rice. They do have somewhat big portions. My only problem is that you hear the microwave in the back as they are warming up your food and then we go pay and the total is $36.41!!! We got a Jamaican Cola and Gatorade also. I'm sorry but it was too much for microwaved food.

Gabriel O.

Yelp
Amazing place. I'm coming back here everytime I'm in the Miami area. They took care of me and were very nice and professional. I highly recommend this place.

Wil S.

Yelp
The food was really good. Warm atmosphere. The Africans showed me how to eat without utensils. We had a great time. They also pointed out that I was eating with my left hand. I was suppose to eat with my right. One nice African gentleman explained to me no to worry, God made it that I eat with my left hand, so just don't worry about it.
google avatar

Marissa J.

Yelp
First time trying African food. I order the yellow rice which was a little spicy which I do not mind but the rice was not cook all the way, I got the goat which unfortunately was not able to eat it because it was not cook at all, meat was so hard that could not break it with my teeth. I had a horrible experience with the food so I do not think will be going back, average meal $15.00

Yelp
Comments: Kyrs P below reviewed this place "correctly" even the reviewer did not try the food. Well, I had the exactly same experience with my ENTIRE family showed up at this joint. Explaination: Thank God, there was a dude, I think is either her brother or son came out of the kitchen area to greet my family and attended us at the sitting area. English is not an issue, it's "what to" order if you're not sure "how to" order. Therefore just like Krys P, and I were looking forward to a more "attentive" attitude during the "food inquiring process". But then, just to be fair, I personally think much of the entire Miami Dade County has much similar "attitude" for most of my past dinning experiences; henceforth, I rarely dine in Miami unless I was pull into it with my frequently drunken and forgot what city-they're in-friends. Otherwise, I rather travel out of this entire county period. (Meh, Miami doesn't offer any decent food from the get go anyway, at least for me.) My conviction came after 2 continents on Earth left on my tour agenda and 21 states left to go in USA. The Food: So now the explanations are done, let's get to the food. Do not be shock by the "natives" Nigerian foods on the cold aluminum containers (in Kyrs P photo). If they "natives" can eat it, so can I. With that mentality, I just ask anything that's not so spicy. So, for a family of 4, we've got the Egusi and the white yam; now this dish is fun to look at and taste ok. It's a learning experience for us. The allege "meat" dish, photoed and mentioned by Kyrs P. is kinda fatty, just cut away the fats and we ate only the lean part of the meat. So, so. Also some sort of stir fry green vegetable with eggs in it. And again, it was so so...ummm, no not collards ( I love collards, I know all 3 collards well by heart), and a fish stew with plain white rice, now guys; watch out and here is where you prove that you've got brave heart. This fish dish tastes really "fishy" and is spicy for me and if you're tolerance level are right around "Goya" or "Crystal" sauces, you should not be ordering this fishy dish and definitely rethink your visit to New Orleans ( but I do love New Orleans, visited 6 times in my life span). Closing. It's hard to find a "out of the norm" restaurant in Miami from the beginning, unless I go back home to Manhattan. So for a quick adventure out in Miami, this place is ok to visit. Just remember "my" taste standard is NOT yours and this place might be really good for you. But I likely will not visit unless I'm bored.

Yelp
First time I've seen Nigerian food prepared buffet style and ready to serve - bad idea as the food tasted old and not fresh. The jollof rice tasted like it was cooked days ago, frozen, and warmed in a microwave oven. Was not impressed at all. Jollof rice is basic Naija food and this staple you shouldn't mess up if you're running a naija restaurant.

Yelp
The food was superb and customer service was outstanding. This is the best Nigerian food I ever ate. Def. will return to eat here. It was so good that I purchase extra plates to go. Thank you for the awesome experience. The music was nice too!

Yelp
This is the best African restaurant in the area. The service was fast and good! The food was great!

Yelp
The food is amazing and to top it off they are very nice people! I drive 25 miles because the food so good! Reminds me of times I visited my dad in Nigeria! Thanks Brittany "Baby girl"!
