We had a family Christmas party here. Amber and Richard did an amazing job helping to get everything ready. They were both very friendly, helpful and provided wonderful service. The food was brought out when promised and was very good. I highly recommend having an event here. We are already booked for next year’s party! Thank you Amber and Richard!!

Hosted a soccer team banquet at Shield’s for the second year in a row and they did not disappoint. The planning was very easy, they were super flexible on the headcount (we had 70), and the pricing was very reasonable. I appreciate that they can pivot with last minute changes and are just genuinely fun to work with. Amber is an absolute joy. When we rolled in to decorate she had a smile on her face that did not fade the entire evening. She anticipated needs before we knew we had them. Rich was super kind and accommodating, getting a gluten free pizza done on the fly. It is refreshing to work with people that genuinely care about what they do and like where they work. We will be back! Thank you for a wonderful evening!

I hosted my second party this year at Shield’s in Troy and again they never disappoint!! Not only is the food absolutely delicious but their service is incredible!! Amber was on top of everything! I felt like she treated us as her own family! Amber is amazing!! Herlinda was incredible as well!! Thank you ladies for everything you did tonight !!! You made my life so much easier having my son’s birthday party here tonight!

I picked up a to go order today and the woman working carryout was very pleasant and really went above and beyond making sure I had everything and even wrapped the soups to prevent any possibility of spillage. The food was also excellent! For great pizza and service I highly recommend Shields.

Great Detroit style pizza- their Gold Medal with sausage is my favorite but I like every pie I’ve had. Service was good and we always seem to get a table even though the place is busy. Special thanks this last visit - they accommodated 10 of us with no reservation at dinner time quickly with a smile.

My husband and I just dined here and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience due entirely to poor service. We ordered several dishes, and when our waitress, Grace, dropped off the food, we asked for ranch, ketchup, and napkins. She never came back with any of them. While we were eating, she never once checked on our table, yet we clearly saw her helping and checking on the table right next to us. At one point, I called out “excuse me” to get her attention, and she appeared to pretend she couldn’t hear me. After waiting quite a while, I finally had to go to the bar myself just to get ketchup. There was no ranch available, and we still had no napkins. My husband’s Coke was completely empty and was never refilled. When we were finished eating, she finally came by and asked if everything was good. We told her that one dish was very unpleasant, extremely salty with a strange taste and we also mentioned that we never received the ranch, ketchup, or napkins. She simply said “uh-huh,” did not apologize, and walked away. She then returned with the bill and charged us for the dish we specifically said was inedible. When we asked about it, she said, “Unfortunately, I can’t take it off. You ordered it,” and walked away. Her attitude throughout the entire interaction was dismissive and rude. When I calmly addressed her attitude and explained that all I had done was mention the missing items and poor service, she told me this was “not a place for confrontation” and implied I was trying to start something, which I absolutely was not. I was respectful the entire time, and I’m confident that cameras would show that. Very disappointing, and not an experience we would repeat. Will be sure to mention this to our friends!

Shields has always been my favorite Detroit style pizza. Been coming here my entire life! The only difference now is that I do have to ask for some extra sauce! But that seems to common at all puzza shops now! The Spinach & Fresh Roasted garlic pizza is a must try. But once you have it, it gets into your blood so you crave it all the time! They are still foing things old Skewl. The best detroit style pizza around! Love the combo with the antipasto & air bread!

Went for a late lunch on a weekday. We were seated promptly and had drinks within a few minutes of being seated. We ordered a Chicken Caesar salad, cheesy bread, and traditional wings. My daughter enjoyed the wings, which were huge- much larger than I've seen anywhere else. The Caesar salad was okay- one of the less flavorful chicken caesar salads I've had. Lots of greens and croutons but a little lighter with the grilled chicken. I didn't care for cheesy bread- it had a fried taste to it, and just didn't hit the spot. Most likely won't be back.

Shields Pizzeria is a true Detroit classic and a must-visit if you love real, comforting pizza. Their Deep dish pie, with that thick crust, crispy edges, and rich sauce on top is absolutely delicious. The antipasto is incredible, and my partner and I love coming here to watch a game while sharing a tray of pizza and a pitcher of beer or pop, depending on the mood. The menu has plenty to offer, but the pizza steals the show. A staple spot that feels like home.

Interior was nice Host stand was a little disorganized seating people that arrived after us prior to us being seated. Our waiter was slammed with several large parties all sat at once. He did the best he could but service was slow because of it. Cheesy bread was good, not great. Pizza was good but Louis in Hazel Park is superior.

The four of us had a good night drinking with Lincoln and Taco Tuesday. The taco is good but a bit greasy. Only $2 if you don't get cheese. An extra 50 cents for cheese. The craft beer choices are good. Service was adequate and friendly.

Ordered pick up on 12/30/2024 for lunch. Pick up counter is in the back so had to go through and pass the dininf area. They have backdoor access for pick up. I should have known. Easy pick up process, nice staffs at the restaurante & pick up counter, quick, hot pizza out of oven that tastes delicious!!

Came in for dinner with the family and sat outside to enjoy the weather while we can lol Barbra did a great job! She told us she was new but we couldn't even tell! She knew the food & drink menu to a tea! Would definitely eat here again

I used to go to this establishment with some regularity, but I haven't been here in years...and definitely not since they did their big renovation. It certainly looks different, but we sat outside, so I didn't get to see much. We went at lunch time on a weekday, so my wife and I split a couple of things from their lunch menu - the caesar salad and the pretzel sticks. Both were good, but nothing spectacular. We definitely need to come back and try some of the more interesting things on the menu.

We had a luncheon there after my father's funeral and they did a fabulous job. They made sure everyone was taken care of and that there was always food and drinks. The food was great. We were in our own space which is what you want for an event like this. They made sure to reserve a table for the immediate family. Definitely recommend.

Better than Buddys-great pizza, all-around nice and varied menu. Good sandwiches, salads, & dinners too. Service is always very friendly and accommodating. Casual and relaxing atmosphere. Large area in the back for big parties.

I haven't been to Shield's in 10+ years but I always remembered they had delicious pizza. I was in the area and stopped in for a meal. Yep, still great pizza! The breadsticks were just okay. I didn't see them on the menu but asked for them and then the server said "they're making more so just ask" when she gave us some but I don't know if that was to imply ours had been sitting out, which could be why they tasted stale. The service was lacking. It took 30 minutes to even get the opportunity to place our order, which was stressful. Having to ask for things like a refill more than once made me feel like an inconvenience.

We were a group of 19, we had 1 waitress! One! The decor was very nice in line with Halloween! we sat together and she took our orders! Separate checks which was good. She took all of them if I remember correctly and brought them all out together! But I'll let the food speak for itself!

Love Shields Pizzeria - this is a must go-to when we are in town from California Tonight was no exception & shout out to our server Chris. We'll be back on Friday before heading back to CA

HUGE KUDOS and shoutout to Shields! I placed an online order to be delivered for a large pizza with cheese on the whole thing, and toppings on just one side (so the kiddos could have only cheese). Unfortunately, toppings covered all of it I called, and they couldn't have been more apologetic!! Paul, the OWNER HIMSELF actually showed up at my door with a fresh hot cheese pizza and a bottle of wine for our inconvenience. I was blown away! Thank you Paul! We really appreciate what you did, and we will definitely give our business to Shields!

First time in Detroit and I made it my mission to find Detroit style pizza- well mission accomplished. Not only was the pizza great, the toppings were fresh, the wings were awesome, and the service was excellent. If I'm ever back in Michigan I know where I'll be having dinner!

We stopped in here not knowing or expecting anything. We were pleasantly surprised by the great service, ambiance and good. We really enjoyed the minestrone soup and will go back again for more.

This is a new favorite find in the Detroit area. Today is actually taco Tuesday and they have great deals on tacos but I wanted to try the pizza. They have multiple types of pizzas and I went for the deep dish square. It was awesome! Fresh ingredients and very good. They actually have a huge menu with soups, salads, sandwiches, wings, and bigger entrees. I was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable prices and specials. I love this place. 5 stars for the food and value.

Rock Solid detroit-style pizza in the top 10 of my favorite Square pizzas. The Gold Medal has a solid kick to it that is not for the timid but well worth it. THe parking is ample and they've got a great dinging area + bar. -1 star because carry out food has been stone-cold at times and it's always a gamble ordering "to-go" so I simply stopped doing it. Otherwise the pizza is fantastic, service being typical for tavern-style restaurant and big booths for cozy ambiance. 4 stars for great pizza

The flatbread app was good. The basil on the deer dish pizza smelled and tasted bad and sort of ruined that pizza. The waitress was friendly and checked in as often as I would expect for how many tables she was waiting on. Most of the resturant felt clean except the entrance which felt very cluttered with flyers and event postings, one of which was for a free coffee at Tous Les Jours with a Shields receipt but was not actually being honored at Tour Les Jours.

I haven't been here in yrs and my " large pizza " had barely any toppings on it all the way around - sad, I wont be going back for that price on cheese bread

The server didn't write down our order, came back to confirm what we ordered, and still got a lot wrong. He talked about his (insert R-word here) son and using that slur is offensive. He kept calling us pet names like mom, dad, bro, etc and it felt unprofessional. Had the Baked Mac & Cheese Saturday special and it was bland with no seasoning. We purposely forgot our carry out boxes.

It's cold out and it snowed earlier. Seems like a good night for pizza, right. Been by and heard about this place thousands of times before. Decided to give it a whirl. We were seated a freshly dirty table, how nice is that. No one has come to take our order or clean our table yet. Order a chicken Parmesan, added sauce since some folks said they tend to skimp on the red sauce here. Order a regular Greek salad and a veggie small square with added garlic, spinach, yellow peppers and chicken too. The Greek salad was smaller than I was thinking for it feed two of us. Mixed greens. Cucumbers I could have done without, not necessary for a Greek to me. It was good overall and generous with the feta. Behind the curtain is a private party. I hear those horns for birthdays or NYE, the kazoo sounding ones. The square crust is quite thick and doughy. The sauce is rather sparse on my veggie too. The chicken is dried out like jerky on both pizzas. $3 for adding on dried chicken on my veggie, super. The chicken Parmesan is okay, they added more sauce. The sauce is chunky. I ate the top off the pizza on my other pieces, since the doughy thick dough wasn't doing it for me and it had little to no flavor to it. The crushed pepper helped get it down. Our table is once again dirty and messy on our departure too. No clean spot to sign the receipt.

Had my son's high school graduation party at shields in their private room. Staff was fantastic working with me up to the day of and on the day of. They were fantastic about different food allergies and made sure everyone was able to eat and enjoy the food!

Yes, I am giving a Detroit pizza icon an average rating because it earned it. I have eaten pizza in many states, lots of famous places, and award winners in the nation contests. The pizza I had wasn't the best Hawaiian, they call it Polynesian, not even close. Others in the group like theirs but none talked about it being the best. The J. L. Hudson salad was a take out and tried the next day. Its size said it was worth the price and could have feed 2-3. It was the worst Maurice salad I have ever had. The garbage disposer got at least half of it and it is almost a sin to me wasting food. The service and willingness to allow large groups helped me add 1 star. But if I want Detroit style pizza, I will stick to Buddy's.

my dad took our family here 10+ years ago, and ever since we haven't stopped coming here. not only is the pizza DELICIOUS, but the service is always OUTSTANDING. such a warm energy about the place, you can't help but love it. the pizza is always so fresh, it's crazy! me and my friends have such a blast with their new karaoke machine too!

This restaurant hosted my son's soccer banquet. We had assorted pizzas, pasta, salad, and bread sticks. Everything was great and our server Rich kept everything stocked and was very nice as well. I would definitely recommend it for banquets or anything else.

I have been here several times but never reviewed it because the service is always so bad. Well, not anymore. Rich came over the second we sat down and got us drinks. I even told him that this was the best service I have ever had here. He has only worked here 6 days and is truly the best thing that ever happened to this place. It was so nice to come in and actually get waited on! Everything from the moment we sat down till we left was truly impeccable. I even want my mom to marry him lol.

The interior had great ambiance, great service, and I made the mistake of ordering a calzone! it was the worst calzone I have ever had. It was mostly doe and hardly any ingredients. Stick with the pizza!

My favourite pizza in America. I've had pizza all over the world from Torino to Japan and I can legitimately say Shield's is in my top 3. The attention to detail they have with these pies, quality of the ingredients and customer experience never make me regret coming here. The super pizza with garlic parm wings is a killer combo that I recommend for everyone.

Garlic Parmesan chicken wings perfectly crispy and paired with a Happy Hour beer! I also ordered the Express pizza lunch that comes with a side salad for $7.99. The pizza was Detroit Deep Dish style with 2 toppings!

Classic Detroit style pizza and I am a huge pizza connoisseur. My boyfriend and I decided to try Shields because we have passed it a ton of times but never tried it before. The first thing I noticed is, the pizza slices are huge!! One slice was the size of my hand! The small pizza came with 4 slices and the large had 8. If I'm being honest, this isn't my favorite Detroit style pizza. I though the dough was great but my pizza was lacking sauce. The lack of sauce and musty pizza did not make me the biggest fan. I think I might just have to try a different type of pizza because I didn't love it. I tried the grilled chicken parmesan pizza I also tried prime rib sandwich. The au jus that came with the sandwich was perfection. It was so delicious and juicy and the fries with the sandwich were delicious. Overall, not my favorite place, but not bad either. I'll have to try a different pizza next time I go back!

We have been coming to this Shields for many years now after our daughter's gymnastics class next door at Troy Gym (also highly recommend). The servers are always pleasant, friendly and down to earth (real). The last few times we have been here we have had Ritchie as our waiter and he has made our lunch experiences feel like we are having lunch at a friends house! Thank you for the YUMMY food AND welcoming environment! My daughter loves the adult size spaghetti with marinara and the minestrone soup. The cheesy breadsticks-- unbelievably delicious!!

Ordered: Traditional Detroit Pizza - Pepperoni and cocktail. First time visiting Troy, Michigan for business trip. Our co-workers highly recommended traditional Detroit pizza. Coming from Cali, I was excited to try different style of pizza. Detroit style has different Ingredients order: Dough, Cheese, Toppings, and then Pizza Sauce. We ordered pepperoni pizza and cocktail. I really like this version of pizza! Pizza was not greasy and dough was crispier since sauce was added last. I actually like Detroit style of pizza better than any other style. I'm already missing it from CA!!

Our second visit since the remodel and I'm not entirely shocked the place is empty. One large party in the back, a couple and their child in our area and six guys at the bar watching football. Our server, Michael, seems more like a cold hearted manager of a pizzeria than a waiter. A total bummer to try and score a little casual small talk or just place an order. I shared details of a visit to a quaint little town in the vicinity, only to have him slam the whole event with his negative experience, how terrible the food is and how it'll be a cold day in hell before he returns there. Moments later I asked my wife if she felt we should go with a medium pizza and salad, he approached and blurted out "too bad we don't have medium." Thought for a minute I was dealing with my 12 year old grandson. We stop to meet family here and probably overstayed our welcome. I tipped a little extra even though the place was desolate. The dishes were cleared and bill hit the table incredibly quick. Once we settled up this guy paced around the table a few dozen times. Then he would stand near the bar and stare at us. Basically, always the great quality food we've come to expect from Shield's. Fabulous new facility. Avoid this character if possible, I have a feeling the locals are already aware of him. 9/19

This was our first time ordering food from Shields. We ordered take out and the food was good, though it was a bit cold by the time we got it home. The cheese bread was just OK, the look of it wasn't as appetizing as I would have liked but it tasted good. We will likely be back.

First time visit. Pleasantly surprised. Salmon was excellent. Server was enthusiastic and helpful, a great guy. Got an offer in my email for a free dessert on my birthday. Reasonable menu prices. I will return.

We hosted a holiday party at Shields yesterday and it was great. The food and service we outstanding, and the back room can accommodate pleanty of guests. Thank you Shields!

I unfortunately have to change my 5-star review of Shield's to 3 stars after we dined here today for dinner. I've been going to Shield's since I was a teenager, with my parents, and we always enjoyed sitting in a booth there. I was excited, then, to see the new renovations, since I hadn't been back in a while. I asked the hostess if my boyfriend and I could have a booth, and her response was something like "We have some available right now but we don't really have any available, you know what I mean?" I assumed she meant that they didn't have enough servers for them. We were seated at a table instead. Literally 5-10 minutes later, a family of three came in, and was seated at the table next to us; they then asked for a booth, and their waiter promptly gave them a nice large booth next to their original table. This was not a good introduction to the new Shields; I really hate when I get sat at a table and there are multiple booths available. Our server was fine but kind of spacey; she kept putting plates and even our pizza at the other end of the table, so we had to almost get out of our chairs to reach it. The pizza was as good as it has always been, and is a solid 4 out of 5 stars from me; we ordered a large pizza with mushrooms, and I had a $3 off coupon from SaveOn - check their website though, apparently they have better coupons there. We also got a half order of breadsticks, which was huge - there were six breadsticks in it. A pet peeve of mine is when I leave a restaurant and none of the waitstaff or hostesses say goodbye, but Shields did pass this test, LOL, so that was good at least. Our waitress did bring us a water refill, too (another pet peeve of mine, when water glasses are left un-refilled), but only after we asked. This wouldn't deter me from eating here again, however, I was disappointed overall. The new decor is really nice but I do miss the old Shield's charm, too.

We stopped in last Friday before a hockey game and we had Rich as our server. Rich was flat out amazing. From the moment we were seated, he engaged with us, made us laugh and reminded us what life is all about - family. We dined on cheese bread, antipasto, and pizzas. All were delicious and very well prepared. The beer was cold and flowing and the drinks were strong - not a bad thing! On this night, however, Rich was the highlight of the meal. It's not everyday you encounter a server as attentive, caring, and genuine as Rich. He's got jokes, he's got stories and he absolutely loves what he does. That night Rich was part of our family. If you go to Shields in Troy, ask to sit in his section. You won't be disappointed! Thanks for a great experience, Rich!! Your "Platinum" Family

Love their pizza! I wish the vibe was a little better, it could be a really cool sports bar.

I came here for lunch with a coworker during a snow storm, so there was barely anyone else in the restaurant with us. I got the express lunch, which comes with a large slice of Detroit deep dish pizza and a salad (or soup). The salad was seriously 5x bigger than I thought it would be. It was filled with chunks of ham, salami, and brick cheese. The vinaigrette was a little vinegary for my liking, but not bad. The menu says that for the pizza, you can get cheese, pepperoni, or the pizza of the day. We asked what the pizza of the day was, and were told cheese or pepperoni...so I guess there was no pizza of the day. The pizza was better than it looked (like a greasy and gloopy mess). It wasn't too greasy, and I liked the crusted Parmesan on the edges, which gave it an extra crunch. The marinara inside was delicious - not too salty. I must say, it was a bit heavy on the cheese. I still like Buddy's pizza better, but this was solid. We also ordered cheesy breadsticks for an appetizer. These too had a nice Parmesan crust. When dipped in marinara, it was almost like eating little pizza strips. Again, a bit heavy on the cheese, but delicious. Our server was friendly, prompt, and accurate. We got a lot of good food for what we paid. I'd definitely come back!

I used to live closer to Shields and went there or carried out often. Recently, I decided to try to figure out my favorite Detroit Style Pizza. Obviously, Shields should be on the list, plus I had fond memories and really liked the brick cheese. So I ordered the Shields Super. Unfortunately, I ordered a large. The pizza was one of the worst Detroit Style Pizza I ever had. The bread was not done. There was very little sauce and they were Uber stingy on toppings. The pizza just wasn't good. I even put it in my air fryer in an attempt to further bake the pizza. It did make it better, but for almost $25, it was not worth it. I like the frozen Detroit Style from Walmart better.

Okay, WOW! Excellent food, service, and ambiance. I have never been to what the old Shield's was like before the reno. But I was told it was not much inside. The remolded is very nice. Modern but still has that dark air about it. Went in the dead of winter but I noticed garage doors in front of the place - can't wait to go back in the summer! We made reservations ahead of time which was no issue. The restaurant accommodated us and service was great. We got our drinks and food within a decent amount of time. Food runners were great and our waitress was attentive with our drinks. Plenty of beer, wine, and cocktails - with a spacious bar. The food was the best part and had such great flavor. The portion sizes are also a great size for the reasonable prices. The slider was borderline the size of a standard hamburger and I could not finish the Michigan Harvest Salad. The truffle fries were thick and not overly oily. Everyone was really happy with their food and most of us needed to take a to-go back. Give this place a chance especially with the new look inside!

Oh it's good to be back! to be able to dine in again. After the biggest business killer ever covid-19. Shields made it through and is back open for dine in, though you wouldn't know it by the few customers that we're dining in today 2/2/2021. So I'm not going to complain about the table they sat me at, or where they placed my pizza. I'm just going to be thankful that I'm actually able to sit down and eat in a restaurant. I got a tall Miller lite 23 Oz it was four bucks, no complaints there. My pizza was good, they did mess up the toppings but I had nothing to complain about cuz it was still really tasty. I was trying to order a small deep dish with pepperoni, sausage and onion, and I saw they had this sauce called the gold medal sauce, I asked about that and she said it was slightly sweeter and spicier than the regular sauce, so I'm like okay I'll go for that sauce. But I ended up getting the gold medal Pizza which is one of their specialty pizzas and the pepperoni sausage and extra onion, but it didn't matter. The pizza was good and the beer was good and it was nice to be able sit inside. No complaining. I'm so happy Sheild's made it through. I hope these restaurants stay open for dine-in business and people can come back and support them again. They were keeping it clean, sanitizers at the table, taking your name when you showed up. I know Sheild's had some great takeout deals during the pandemic hopefully they will continue to offer some takeout deals, and customers will start to return for dine-in. The remodel looks great and this place has been around forever. I'm glad they made it through these crazy days. And $4 Tall Miller lights yes please.

Love the pizzas, the sauce is always spot on, toppings were delicious and generous. One of last great pizza places left in the area.

we got a $50 gift card because they completely screwed up our order.... only to mess up and have awful food the next time. I threw away the $15 left on the card, this place has gone so downhill. I use to eat here all the time, last 5 times the food was awful.

AWESOME PIZZA!!!! I tell all my friends and family. What a phenomenal restaurant shields is. In the summertime, they have the garage doors open which really adds ambiance to the setting inside the restaurant

Lived in the area for 15 years but never budged to try this place. Finally we did and we have now set it as one of our family spots. The pizza crust flavor was so good I ate 2 slices of my daughters pizza! (I'm not a huge fan of pizza) My bbq ribs and my husbands steak were both so moist and tender. Flavor was also good. In general, all the portions were very generous. Even my youngest's kids pasta was big. We were very satisfied with the service as well. Even when the restaurant was busy, our waitress was attentive and didn't miss any requests. Overall, our visit was a success!

Very poor experience. I got a prime rib sandwich. The meat on there was very dry and there was very little of it. Even with the au jus, it was mealy and tasteless. The fries were initially forgotten even though I asked if the bag was checked. The chicken tenders were terrible. They were small, dry and overcooked. Their were no fries included. I would not go back here again for anything but maybe pizza. Very disappointing experience.

Had lunch, two people. Service was attentive and friendly. Food arrived quickly but not too quickly. We ordered the individual antipasto salad and a large round pizza. Fresh ingredients. Great for big groups too. Will be back!
