Best Restaurants in Flagstaff, Arizona | Eater Phoenix

"Some of the city’s most innovative contemporary American food comes from this high-energy sliver of a restaurant, owned by pastry chef Dara Wong. Although there’s a small dining room near the back, the magic happens at the bar overlooking the exhibition kitchen, where savvy customers watch the seasonal dishes being made and order accordingly. Executive chef Tamara Stanger — the Phoenix chef who earned acclaim for her Arizona-centric work at Helio Basin Brewing and Cotton and Copper — joined Wong last December, bringing along her legendary rabbit lasagnette and extraordinary pies as well as a sense of grounded creativity that blends well with Shift’s ethos. Don’t miss the duck taquitos, sauced with mesquite mole, the Southern-fried pork chop with beer-braised nopales, or Wong’s wonderful savory sorbets." - Nikki Buchanan

Shift kitchen was my favorite restaurant experience I’ve ever had. I was in flagstaff celebrating my 30th birthday with loved ones and going to Shift was perfect. We chose to do the tasting menu and each of us finished every plate that came our way. Highlights include the duck mole taquitos, the mezzo course of grapefruit sorbet with goat cheese and olive oil, and the incredible elote southwest salad to open the night. The drinks were boozy, tasty, and beautiful. Everything about the experience was excellent. I gush about it to everyone who asks what I’ve been up to. Thank you so much!

Had an amazing time with my girlfriend here! We had our dinner in the back dining room, which had an excellent atmosphere, but if possible try sitting up at the bar to watch the chefs make the delicious food in front of you. We started with the duck taquitos, so much flavor and the plating was wonderfully put together! We then ordered the steak which was perfectly cooked to my liking (not so much my girlfriend’s lol), so we ordered the wine burger as well! The wine burger was definitely one of the best burgers I had in a long time, certainly a highlight of the menu! As for the service, our waiter (who I unfortunately forgot the name of, but he’s in his 20s like me) was incredible for always making sure our food and experience was the best it could be! Will definitely come back the next time we come out to Flagstaff, cheers!

My wife and I recently dined (July 2025) at Shift Kitchen & Bar in Flagstaff, Arizona, and it was a memorable experience that blended unique flavors with a cozy, upscale vibe. Shift delivered a meal that was mostly impressive, though not without a minor hiccup. We started with the Duck Taquitos ($13.00), and while the presentation was inviting, this appetizer was our least favorite. They weren’t bad, but we wouldn’t order them again. For our main courses, I opted for the Wine Burger ($23.00) and the burger hit all the right spots for satisfying my burger craving. The real standout, though, was the pickled fries, which added a zing and crunch. I’d rate this dish a solid 4.5 out of 5. My wife chose the Pork Chop ($35.00)and it was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, with the nice sauce that would been even better with a little more of it on the dish. She gave it a well-deserved 4.5 out of 5. The highlight of the evening was dessert: the Griddled Blue Corn Cake ($13.00) with roasted grapes, caramelized white chocolate, and pecorino gelato. This dish was a revelation—unique, perfectly balanced, and unlike anything we’ve had before. A definite 5-star dessert that we’d go back to get again and again. We also enjoyed Shift’s cocktails, which stood out for their creative ingredients and flawless execution. Our only gripe was the timing of the main courses. My burger arrived a good 5 to 10 minutes before my wife’s pork chop, which disrupted the flow of our meal. While not a dealbreaker, it was a noticeable misstep in an otherwise stellar experience. Overall, Shift Kitchen & Bar delivered a fantastic dining experience with bold, creative dishes and a warm atmosphere. We’d rate our meal a 4.5 out of 5 and will definitely return—especially for that blue corn cake. If you’re in Flagstaff and craving something inventive, Shift is a must-visit. Note: Prices and menu items reflect our visit in July 2025.

We skipped the chef’s tasting menu and instead ordered the duck taquitos and the line-caught California halibut. The duck taquitos were a success—the sweet and spicy sauce complemented the dish beautifully and felt well thought out. Unfortunately, the halibut was a major letdown. The dish combined mint leaves and pomegranate (Middle Eastern elements) with bok choy and a soy glaze (Asian influences), resulting in a confused plate with no clear identity. Rather than feeling innovative, the fusion felt forced, with ingredients that didn’t naturally complement one another, leaving little sense of cohesion or surprise. To make matters worse, the halibut itself—already a delicate fish—was slightly overcooked, which further diminished the dish.

This one is definitely worth the hype!! And they better managed the line compared to yesterday's bakery spot...The first Saturday of the month is their bake sale, have to get there early before they sell out!! We got the croque madame burrito... all the flavors together were amazing!! They won't have a bake sale in November, but can't wait to come back!!

Google
We went here for our anniversary and it did not disappoint. The tapas style dishes were nice for trying different foods and everything we tried was outstanding. Loved the savory sorbet. Each dish after was a new flavor bomb. Desserts were unique and top notch. And the service was excellent. We will definitely be back. Thank you to the staff for making us feel special.

Google
Excellent Customer Service. Food is sooooo good! We ordered 2 Tequila Sunrises and they were made perfectly, for food we ordered the Wine Burger and the Jidori Chicken both fresh and delicious! First time here and will definitely be back. The atmosphere is nice and friendly. The restaurant is clean and neat. Although food made fresh when ordered, it came out in no time. Highly recommend.

Google
We had a great dinner on New Years Eve! It was a last minute reservation and the food was so delicious!! Our server Scarlett (brunette) was the best waitress ever!! The other waitress Jen (blonde) was also very sweet! They both had on the same dress, super cute for the Roaring 20's restaurant theme! I definitely recommend this restaurant and would go back if in the town again!

Yelp
First, who ever designed Shift has done an excellent job of using the space in the most efficient and effective way possible. The seating overlooking the kitchen is fantastic. We sat further back in the place. Pro tip. If you want a great experience with just four people, try to get the table in the far back right corner. The ambiance is a mix of new and old done in a very tasteful manner. Leaving the brick wall exposed in the back was a stroke of brilliance. We made reservations which are highly recommended so that you will not be disappointed if you just show up and hope for the best. Those who following me know that my wife has food allergies. The staff from the greeter, to the server to the chef put forth the best effort that I have ever experienced in providing options for her. They hit a home run with the bases loaded. The chef went so far as to mark up a menu in which each entree was noted and how they could prepare it specially for her. This is way above and beyond. The service was out standing. I am talking about the kind of service one expects at The Court of Two Sisters or Commanders Palace in New Orleans. Now to the food. I had the pork chop. I did not really know what I was getting into, but I sure liked it. The chop was cooked perfectly and the garnish was excellent. A mint flavored salad came with it. Such a perfect combination. My wife had the lamb chop. She simply smiled (grinned) through the whole meal. With both had wine with the meal. I cannot remember which one she got, but it was a dry white. I have the Cabernet. OMG. Now for the dessert. Toffee cheese cake. A perfect end to a great experience. The crust was perfect. The cheese cake was light and simply wonderful. I have eaten all over the world. Shift has gone a lone ways in finding ways to meld the flavors of each entree. I have no hesitation in saying that this was the best dining experience that I have had, outside of New Orleans. Two entrees, three glasses of wine and dessert $145.00. Not bad!!!

Yelp
What a bustling and experiential way to enjoy dinner. More interactive than a typical restaurant. We chose to do the chefs 4 course tasting menu and added the wine/spirit option. I enjoyed the tasting menu, but I don't think it's actually offering any kind of savings. The menu is online, so if there are items you really have your heart set on, don't do the tasting menu. I absolutely loved sitting at the bar and watching everyone work. As the restaurant got busier they really started to move quickly, the kitchen staff here is so impressive. Love the vibe here, you can get fancy or not, there was both. The food we had was superb: broccolini and a bean puree, duck mole taquitos, steak and mashed potatoes, and an orange cheesecake pie. And they were so kind to give us a bonus course that was our favorite item of the night- a tarragon savory sorbet with goat cheese and evoo. Everything was just extraordinary and perfectly cooked. This is a must do. Definitely have reservations.

Yelp
In all my travel, there have been 2 restaurants that were so good that I would travel to go back just for the restaurant. One was el celler de can roca in Barcelona and Tomiño Taberna gallega in nyc - Shift would be the 3rd. We had the cheese and peaches, the duck taquitos, mushroom pasta, fries, pork chops, Brussels sprouts, the pavlova and a blueberry pie. The food was extremely inventive and interesting. Not that everything was a slam dunk but there was something that was very special on every plate that made me curious to see more of what the chefs will come up with - for example I never would have paired the cheese and peaches together. But it was great. The duck taquitos were dough heavy and I couldn't quite tell it was duck but the mole was spectacular. The Brussel sprouts were perfectly fried and the cheese cubes added a great salt kick. But it did get a bit one note. I would have added a local berry of some kind to give it a random sweet/spicy kick here and there. The mushrooms and pasta dough were perfectly executed with a sauce that I did not expect. The pasta texture was great, which is hard to do in a filled pasta. Most chefs would tap out and go with a generic cream sauce but the port butter sauce here gave it a very interesting spin. I wished I had some bread to soak up the sauce. The pork probably could have used 30 seconds less in the fryer - but the sauce, feta and cactus were surprising in the best way. It made it almost not about the pork, which I did wish was thicker. The burger meat is serious (my kid got a kids burger but I'm sure they used the same meat) and so flavorful. It's rare to get a burger that doesn't need anything else...no sauce no cheese nothing. The kids chicken tenders tasted like there was rice flour or starch mixed into the coating which gave it a perfect crunch. The pavlova dessert was such an interesting play on textures. Finally that blueberry cardamom pie....HOLY HELL Heavens to Murgatroyd !!! That pie was deathbed pie...ie one of the last mouthfuls of food I would want before I kicked the bucket and left this earth. I don't know if the pie is that good everyday but I sure hope so for the sake of my future self when I go back. The service was great. The maitre d was fantastic and so accommodating. I'm curious to go back and see what the chefs think up next.

Yelp
While staying the night in Flagstaff as a stopover, my hubs & I tried this place!! It was my birthday and I wanted to go somewhere casual, yet eloquent, with a unique vibe and good food, Nailed it! I wish I had taken pics of everything we ate but I was enjoying my meal too much. From my bread appitser to my Halibut; everything tasted good! Nothing was fishy or stale. If I am ever in Flagstaff again, I will definitely go there!! Highly recommend, enjoy!!

Yelp
Small, cute spot with great staff! Super unique menu, so many flavors. I personally loved everything I had, my husband thought there was a little too much going on flavor wise (namely with the rabbit and the special custard pie dessert). I thought it was a lot but unique and complex and new so I really enjoyed ! The foie Gras was insane !!! Would definitely come back to try more things!

Yelp
A quaint little spot in DT Flagstaff. The dishes are intended to be shared amongst the table so we ordered a little bit of everything. Everything contained an elevated flavor profile that you won't typically see in a modern American restaurant. If you're looking for a unique dining experience this is the spot to try!

Yelp
We stopped in for some bites and a drink before a concert, and overall I would give this establishment a 3.8 We enjoyed the fries and brussel sprouts from the appetizer section, and also tried the mushroom pasta. We also ordered the special cocktail of the day, a passion fruit margarita. This is a nice restaurant and would be a good place for happy hour. We liked the fries and sprouts, but found the pasta to be a small portion for a really high price and would not likely order a main entree here again. The best part of the meal was the savory basil and goat cheese sorbet, which was inventive and a fair price for what it was. The drinks were strong and service was good. But unfortunately I think this place is a bit overpriced for what you get and in comparison to other options in Flagstaff.

Yelp
Amazing food! Everything was so delicious, thoughtful and balanced. I had the chicken with capers and wild rice and my husband and son had the burger with pickled fries...we were all sharing everything and so impressed with the flavors. Love this place and will definitely come back!

Yelp
Omg the food here is such a fun and amazing journey/ experience. I've been wanting to go back ever since! Service was amazing for how busy they were!

Yelp
The food was very good. The venue is cute. It was a busy week night. Not too pleased with the service, waitress not so friendly but oddly the food for my friend arrived a good twenty minutes later than mine. I'd return because of the delicious dishes.

Yelp
I have now been here twice during visits to Flagstaff. What an absolute gem! I couldn't wait to come back the second time after having such an incredible experience the first time last spring. I had a reservation both times as the restaurant tends to be quite busy. Sat at the counter both times as well. This is my preferred spot. It is fun watching the chefs prepare food and see what comes out. Some of the things we ordered we did so because of the way we saw them being prepared. My absolute favorite thing on the menu are the duck taquitos. Crispy, savory bites of goodness. Make sure you start with the sorbet. This is a tangy and earthy palate cleanser. I could eat 10 of them. The pickled french fries were crispy and delicious. We asked the chef what his favorite thing on the menu was. He told us it was the pork chop. We were not disappointed! It was the most savory, moist, and delicious chop either my husband or I have ever eaten. We followed it up with a slice of guava and strawberry pie which was no less delicious. Cocktails are also top notch here. This will be my go to every time I go through Flagstaff. It is a place to have fun and experiment with food with a friend or a group...lots of shareable menu items that are all priced well. The chef and his team work incredibly hard to make everything look and taste perfect before it is placed in front of you. My husband said this was the most satisfying meal out he has had in a very long time.

Yelp
I wish I could give this place 10 stars! The most amazing dinner my bf and I have had in a long time! Everything was so unique and well-paired. We were blown away by the dishes. The pickled fries tasted like salt and vinegar chips. Amazing! The burger is definitely one for the book. The whipped cheese!!! Omg!!! I wish they open one in Vegas. I WILL GO EVERY DAY!

Yelp
We were greeted promptly upon entering. We had a reservation and were seated right away. We sat in the back seating area next to an already occupied table. Our table was a bit wobbly and I couldn't get it any closer to the bench seating that I had on my side, so the seating was just okay. Hubby had a high top chair. The seating is a bit too close for personal conversation IMHO. The music was a bit too loud, but I believe it was lowered. I had a hard time hearing our server, Lily, when she first greeted us. She did a great job throughout our meal. The apps were all tasty, especially the mussel toast. It was spicy and interesting. The pickled fries weren't overpowering in their pickling, and the sauces were delish. The crudo was very tasty, but there was too much cream cheese. You didn't need to use it all, but it wasn't needed so it was wasted on us. Hubby had the rabbit lasagnette. He said it was tasty and he enjoyed the fresh pasta, but he couldn't tell that it was rabbit. He was looking forward to rabbit and knows it well, but he couldn't discern it in the dish. He said it could have been any other meat and he wouldn't have known the difference. I had the halibut cheeks fra diavolo. It was delish and I would def order it again. I would prob like it cooked a bit less than it was delivered, but many would consider it perfect. Overall, it was a good experience with great service.

Yelp
This has got to be one of the most delicious meals we've ever had! Absolutely everything we ate was a 10/10! We started with the Crispy Brussels, which were just a perfect portion for sharing. Drizzled in aleppo honey and tiny chunks of Humboldt Fog cheese (a goat cheese that tastes similar to Blue cheese with a texture like Brie), this concoction just melted in ones mouth! Next for our main dishes, I had the Sacchetti Pasta. Four perfect little pouches of pasta filled with parsnip & ricotta cheese accompanied with black garlic & pecorino chips, this dish did not disappoint! Unique & fresh,... absolutely delicious! My date had the Bison Bone-In Short Ribs. The ribs, which literally just fell off the bone as they were cooked perfectly, sat above a yummy, pumpkin polenta. Short Rib Jus (gravy) was drizzled on top and fresh pomegranate seeds were sprinkled throughout. Acorn squash chips also accompanied the dish, to give the perfect fall menu item. For dessert, we shared the Chocolate Mousse. Bananas foster surrounded the generous portion of chocolate mousse, topped with coffee walnut gelato. Dehydrated marshmallows (probably the coolest thing ever), topped the dessert throughout. This item was a stand out for both of us. We couldn't stop talking about what an incredible combination this dessert was, not only in flavor, but fun to eat! The staff was incredible throughout our entire visit. We had reservations, which we suggest you do too, as this restaurant gets BUSY! Absolutely an unbelievable meal! 5-STARS!

Yelp
We went to Shift with little to no knowledge of the owner, chef, or restaurant. We went based off Yelp average ratings and the food photos from Yelp. Tbh we were quite rushed and did very little research. But I saw there were plenty of vegetables in the photos and that excited me! These days it seems that a lot of restaurants are really cutting back on vegetables on their menus. I'm not a vegetarian, vegan or anything I just simply enjoy fiber, nutrients and vitamins with my protein. I love that we were able to make a reservation via Yelp, so easy! We arrived on a Saturday 1 hour ahead of our reservation and thankfully we were able to be seated. This is a popular restaurant so it is wise to either make a reservation or arrive early. Hot tip, in the reservation for make a request for back room seating. We ordered a bunch of dishes to share and we were surprised at how generous the portions were especially since we heard they are tapas style, I was expecting very scant portions. While we were dining I noticed there were some very familiar ingredients in the food close to my Cantonese roots but also a wonderful array of south west flavors and very fresh delightful food. After we dined I looked into the restaurant and was pleasantly surprised to learn that the owner is part Cantonese. So cool. It was a wonderful surprise to experience a new way of using traditional Cantonese flavors into south west new American cuisine. I don't want to simplify the genre of Shift too much because Shift seems to be boundless in creativity, infusing familiar flavors into unique textures in such an exciting original and very enjoyable way. LGBTQ+ friendly, which I love. Allergy awareness is very alive here which I appreciate. Very kind and helpful staff. Wish I was into cocktails as they looked absolutely luxe and refreshing. Details matter and they do not miss a beat, every cocktail was like a work of art. Special shaped ice cubes, endless garnishes, colors, etc. The wine list looked quite appealing as well. The vibe here is very flagstaff meets a chic Florentine (Italy) restaurant (I'm thinking of Zeb). The cleanest restrooms I've ever used in my life. Simple chic interior. Wish I was around for the morning bake sale the croissants look superb.

Yelp
With all the hype I guess I had high expectations but I was definitely let down, all around. The water was disgusting if you're someone who can taste water (hi it's me)...had to order a bottle of sparkling (for $7 that you can get at the grocery for like $2 lol). The food...well...whoever writes their menu descriptions is very very creative and makes things sound waaaaay more special than they are, if I'm keeping it real. The service was subpar - for Flagstaff, the vibe of the server felt waaay too sadiddy. We had a reservation and were told we had 90 minutes max...and it took a solid 30 to be approached once. Took so long to get the check we had to get up to pay. Casual ambiance, even if the menu prices might suggest otherwise. I might not have ordered the right things but based on human interaction experience alone, I probably won't be back.

Yelp
The food at Shift is exquisite, and it's clear why this is a 5-star restaurant and James Beard Award Semifinalist. What's a welcome surprise is that Shift has such a warm, comfortable and casual atmosphere. While in Flagstaff, a realtor who knows the area well recommended Shift to us. He even said it was his "favorite restaurant anywhere!" The restaurant has a cozy Flagstaff vacation vibe, with a woodsy-warm, casual yet trendy decor, and the food is Michelin Star quality. The menu changes slightly, but I'll bet the following (which we loved) will be there when you visit. For starters, you must order the Pickled French Fries. When the realtor mentioned it, I thought it sounded odd, but trust me--the secret sauce is delicious, and we added the House-made Ranch with truffle which I could not get enough of. As for my entrée, I can confidently say I would never choose anything else! The Agnolotti Pasta was so amazing that I knew I had picked the right dish the moment I saw its beautiful presentation with edible flowers and smelled the wonderful Italian aroma. The homemade pasta, filled with a divine mix of white corn and ricotta, had a wonderful sweetness that was far more complex than it sounds. Every bite was elevated, especially with the luscious saffron cream sauce, soleggiati tomatoes (sun-dried), and bits of pancetta. The balance of flavors was masterful. For those in the mood for a burger, the Poutine Burger is a highly recommended option. It was topped with cheese curds, gravy and a beautiful slaw. While I didn't try it, my friend said it was amazing. The servers here are top-notch: polished, experienced, elegant, & friendly, and the owner is so gracious. The moment we stepped in, we were greeted with bright smiles and warm welcomes from more than one person which made us feel so special. When we left, they made us feel truly appreciated. I can't wait to return. You really have to experience Shift to understand just how special this restaurant is, with its incredible food and welcoming atmosphere.

Yelp
The energy matches the food at Shift. We enjoyed sitting at the Chef's counter and trying multiple items from the menu. Everything was great. One thing we learned at the counter was if you slow down and focus on what you are doing, it turns out perfect. Parking is easy if you take advantage of the underground public parking nearby.

Yelp
This is a really good spot. As the name suggests, it's a "shift" from traditional dining norms. The Pork Chop was the best dish overall. Duck Confit Rolled Tacos were delicious and the Bison Carne Asada Street Tacos were bursting with flavor. Great service and a lively atmosphere. It's a GO.

Yelp
We had a really nice dinner at Shift in Flagstaff. We were seated at a countertop table. We did not have the chef-facing view but that was fine. We made a same-day reservation and got seated right away. We ordered the salmon carpaccio and bread board to start. The bread came with two house-made butters. The olives were very tasty. The bread was fluffy and warm. We devoured the salmon dish. The scallops and agnolotti pasta were both delicious. The portions were on the lighter side, which was fine because we had room for dessert. For dessert, we had the jalapeño cheesecake. It was very unique. It was not my cup of tea, but my husband liked it. It definitely had a kick to it. We really enjoyed the dinner and were happy with the experience overall.

Yelp
From the start, exceptional!!! When I made the reservation, the lady was helpful, accommodating, and later found out ....the owner. I liked that she was that hands on. The place is small but cozy. The food was out of this world! Presentation was perfect! My favorite was the fruit dish with cheese? I can't remember the name. I'd never had anything so elegantly simple yet complex. The rabbit was literally mouthwatering!!!! Still is thinking about it. I wish the menu changed a bit more because it's such a small menu, a little more variety would be great. Maybe it's seasonal and I was only there over the summer. Regardless, I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Service and ambiance are great as always. Pickled fries and carrot salad - tasty Savory sorbets - we did taste the kiwi and cilantro, though the syrup flavor (like green apple syrup in the kiwi sorbet) was too sweet and prominent. Sunflower seed risotto - I can see what was trying to be done, but was very prominent of just coconut milk flavor Bison bone-in ribs - under seasoned meat and polenta. Nicely cooked meat. Scallops were seasoned well and tasty. The cauliflower sauce and oil were tasty. Jalapeño cheesecake - surprisingly spicy, and the rhubarb and cheddar cheese crumbles were a nice balancing factor

Yelp
Night coming in and we moved our reservations from an earlier cancellation. Asked our host for recommendations but we didn't align with them a lot and resorted to photos so we started with the basil sorbet 4/5 and pickle fries2/5. The sorbet was very interesting and the goat cheese went so well with it. The pickle fries were fries brined/marinated with pickle juice but to me it tasted very salty and burnt; I'm not sure if that's the vinegar but they told us it was not fried Pickles so we were prepared. I had a lavender haze non alcoholic drink and it was so yummy (sweet). The burger4/5 was also really good and I loved the pickled carrots paired with it. The pork chops was absolutely so juicy like I've never had one like this and would get again and recommend! It comes with a salad on top. I felt there was too much capers but the salad was really good with the watermelon radish and banana peppers. The setting is nicely dimmed and welcoming.

Yelp
Amazing food. Quality service. And enjoyable ambiance. Food being the biggest draw for me. Going back again! Worth a drive from Phoenix. Amazing appetizers. Good pasta and phenomenal fish. Delicious dessert.

Yelp
It's been over three weeks and I'm still thinking about the meal I had here. I wish I could go back in time so I could try the pavlova for the first time again (sigh). The food was all excellent. The brussel sprouts and steak were perfection, and the pickle brined fries were certainly memorable. They have a very knowledgeable and welcoming staff, who were ready with recommendations when we requested them. The service really was above and beyond. I am looking forward to the next time I can stop by when in Flagstaff.

Yelp
A beautiful seasonally inspired southwest experience! The blue corn pie was delightful.

Yelp
Came to Shift for my birthday and a date night, and it was such a great experience overall! The staff even prepared a handwritten birthday card, which was such a thoughtful touch. The food was absolutely delicious -- I had the burger and the pickle fries, which were a 10/10, and my girlfriend had the fideo, which was incredible. The bread board was beautiful, and the cheese spread was out of this world. We did have a reservation but ended up seated at the bar, which was okay, though we would've preferred something a little more private. That said, the drinks made up for it -- the Forager's Flask was wonderfully herbal and unique, and the Center City was a hit! The highlight of the night was watching the chef near the bar -- the gentleman with the fries by Frite Street hat-- was an absolute badass in the kitchen. Super focused and kind enough to tell us about the marinated olives recipe. Overall, amazing food, great drinks, and outstanding service. Can't wait to come back -- next time maybe at a cozy table instead of the bar!

Yelp
Goodness, where do I begin. It started off well. Meeting my childhood girlfriend for dinner. We like to try new places. I haven't been to the Shift Kitchen & Bar in a while. I love the seasonal menus. I requested two tastings of red wine and chose the Pinot Noir. We started with the duck taquitos as a starter which were yummy. Here's where dinner took a turn. My bison short ribs arrived first. We sat for almost 10-minutes waiting on my friend's entree. I had to flag down our waitress and inquire about the delay. The waitress noted that some entrees take a little longer. I agree but timing should be a part of the process. I worked in the fine dining industry for a stint and this was not acceptable. I waited. I then had to flag the waitress again. I asked her to take my plate and warm it up and to bring our entrees at the same time. I noted it was rude and discourteous to bring my entree out 10-minutes before and I had to sit there while my food got cold. So now, we were being ignored. Not just ignored, discriminated. All the other tables filled with Caucasians and being waited on by our waitress were getting more attention whereas I had to flag our waitress down a few times. Another woman stepped in, a brunette, who was very gracious. I said "Why didn't we get her as our waitress?" She took our dessert order. I wanted to try the butter cake. Very disappointing. My girlfriend had to ask for a knife to cut the cake because it was so hard. I was thinking we recieved a dessert that was old sitting in the back. It wasn't just me. My girlfriend felt the discrimination too. I am a generous tipper and left less than 15%. It was very disheartening that in 2025 racism is still so prevalent. I'm a business owner and a minority. I wish they could feel what we feel when this happens. Our entrees were delicious but the service left a bad taste in our mouth. Very disappointed with the Shift Kitchen & Bar. Also, why is the Ahi Tuna $58? I can buy a pack of four from Sam's Club for $20, throw some seasoning and sear at home. Ahi Tuna on any menu should be an appetizer and around $18. They are reaching on this menu item.

Yelp
Amazing service. Eclectic flavors and choices. Different dining experience with excellent flavors, different choices, and a combination of options that ar not run of the mill. Front door was staying open when people left which made the seating at the counter by the door, not desireable. My wife was cold most of the time. But food and drinks were excellent.

Yelp
Great experience at dinner the other night. Started with basil sorbet with goat cheese, EVOO, and sea salt. Simple but outrageous. For main course had the Barramundi with morels in Normandy sauce. Finished with a toasted milk affogato. Delightfully, they obliged in making it with decaf espresso. The food was outstanding across the board. A little chocolate in the affogato would have been a nice complement and the wine/liquor selection was pretty limited, but it's physically a small place so that might be hard. Nice atmosphere and so many wonderful flavors that I'll be back soon. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Came in hungry as f. We ordered pickled fries and I had the coulotte. Didn't really like the fries... pickled flavor tasted weird for me. Guess I like my fries as is... The coulotte was good but nothing amazing. The sautéed mushroom + beef was a good combo, just wasn't anything I'd give 5 stars for. Our waitress was super nice and the service was quick. I do wish that the tables were bigger though. We squeezed 5 people but even if we had 4 it would've still been tight.

Yelp
Have I not written a review for Shift Kitchen yet? Wow. It's my new favorite dinner spot in Flagstaff. Make a reservation as they are definitely on the foodie radar and enjoy! Both times that I've been there, the service is phenomenal. It's an easy atmosphere - very casual but go ahead and dress up if you are having a date night. They have a great wine and they'll listen to your preferences and make a cocktail to match. They change the menu up pretty often and I would highly recommend sharing dishes. Savory sorbet, Hamachi crudo, mushroom pasta. Just yum!

Yelp
Good food and quick! Ordered from Oeno down the street, had it delivered, and enjoyed some tasty wine while we waited.

Yelp
This was a fantastic meal from start to finish. Food was top notch, creative with excellent taste and the servers were also friendly. I can understand why they were a James Beard semi-finalist. For the two of us we had the savory sorbet, mussels (a very unique twist with a banana ketchup jam spread), pickled fries, duck taquitos (as others have written, the mole was excellent), and corn salad prepared two ways. For dessert we had a sesame pavlova on top of coffee foam with berries as well as their homemade caramel gelato and mango sorbet. All dishes were great except the caramel gelato was a bit too salty (small miss in an otherwise phenomenal meal). Wanted to try their pork chop and burger, but just didn't have enough room. A definite must try and would even make a side trip to Flagstaff if you are relatively close by to just try this place out.

Yelp
What an incredibly warm and delicious experience. Under "snacks" the pickled French fries are a MUST TRY along with the brussels. I don't care if you don't like brussel sprouts, you will like these. 10/10 I would come back just for these two items alone. The charred romaine was a unique flavor we all enjoyed. Main courses were also extremely enjoyable and look forward to coming back to try more. Now onto the attentive staff. Our waitress was so so knowledgeable about the menu and the wine selection. During our course she checked on us many times and there was another lady who was just lovely walking around checking on tables. A really beautiful experience and restaurant. You can tell how much time the owners put into this place!

Yelp
We were blown away with Shift. Dinner was an absolute experience and every plate was packed with flavors from nuanced chocolate in the duck taquitos' molé to the rich chimichurri over the steak. The mocktails were as complex and enjoyable as the meals. Dara's vision for the cuisine that a mountain town can have is being fully achieved with her current menu. Fantastic job!

Yelp
Service was very good but server was brainwashed about the temperature to serve red wine... especially Pinot Noir. Way too warm. The elote salad, Brussels sprouts, and deserts were excellent. Took my partner there for her birthday, she has celiac disease so is limited on what she can eat. Menu has things like buffalo, rabbit, hamburger... where is the fish??? Had a salad on her birthday. I can't say enough about how good the food was but make sure the menu is what you are looking for. Ambiance is noisy and tiny spaces but we can live with that. Overall, very good. But, I like to tell it as I see it.

Yelp
This place was good, just not really my style. My wife is the foodie in the family and she loved it -- the flavors, the presentation, all the little twists on the dishes. For me though, it was tough to find something I liked. Everything on the menu had some kind of creative spin, and I'm more of a simple eater. The food looked great and the service was good, just not my kind of place. If you're into trying new things, you'll probably love it. If you like to keep it simple, maybe not so much.

Yelp
Where do I even begin? I would eat here every day if I could! The agnolotti pasta was hands down some of the best I've ever had--and I'm from Italy! It was cooked perfectly al dente, with a rich yet light ricotta filling and a delicate saffron sauce that was simply divine. The carrot salad was just as incredible, featuring crunchy roasted carrots, sweet raisins, and a tangy feta sauce. You HAVE to try it!

Yelp
Impeccable food, service, and ambiance--without the pretension. We live in Las Vegas, and Shift dethroned our favorite chef-owned restaurant here. It is NOT to be missed when in Flagstaff! We've been several times, and we love starting with the savory sorbet with goat cheese and EVOO--that was my biggest surprise find! Shoutout to our server for recommending it our first time in. We've never been disappointed by a seasonal drink or plate. Get seats at the chefs counter, if you can! If you enjoy seeing amazing food being crafted, you'll love it. Servers are consistently warm, welcoming, and helpful in considering the menu. Our first visit to Shift coincided with our first wedding anniversary, and the welcome bubbles were such a treat. Also love to support a female-owned restaurant that really walks the walk.

Yelp
Amazing night out at Shift! So many people told us about all the fine dining in Sedona...but Shift has been by far the best meal we've had in AZ! Reminds me of Chubby Fish (Charleston, SC) in every wonderful way. Great vibe, amazing preparations, and such a creative menu. If you have an adventurous palate, save your pennies, because Shift is totally worth it! And bring friends, so you can get a taste of more dishes!

Yelp
Britt was our Server Super attentive Christian the chef is really fun and super talented. Sitting at bar and watching orders being made, truly amazing. The food was marvelous, their signature burger was superb, as was the pork chop and tortellini, seasoned to perfection and well balanced. The Pickle Fries were to die for. We will definitely return

Yelp
They never disappoint. The service casual but professional The food fresh and always changing The ambiance relaxed and interesting. This photo of a looking like it came out of the Little mermaid Sea desert made was memorable. Little meringues, creamy mousse, crispy little cookie crumbles and dried fruit combo made it delectable

Yelp
This is hands down the best restaurant I've been to in Flagstaff - no competition nearby. Ps - I've eaten everywhere low & high. Get the reservation asap

Yelp
Delicious New American food. We visited Shift Kitchen and Bar on a Tuesday night, and it was mostly empty. This restaurant has a small open kitchen and is brightly lit with white walls with blue accents. Dishes are served in a tapas style where each dish is served as soon as it is finished cooking. I ordered the lady may to drink, and we split 7 dishes off the menu. Without listing them all, I can say that everything I tried was phenomenal (including my drink). My expectations were greatly exceeded, and I would highly recommend Shift Restaurant and Bar for food and drinks in Flagstaff.

Yelp
Service- Smaller intimate dining. Seating where you can watch the chefs. You are in the kitchen and hearing the chefs. They kept the original historic look of the interior. Server was on pointand explained menu and the inspiration behind the cuisine. Alot of drink options and the atmosphere lends itself to socializing. Felt important. Each dish was explained as it was brought out. Restaurant had a vibe. Motion, progress, achievement. Watching customers exploring the dishes. Each component and discussing their thoughts. Sharing each dish and interacting. Not a single couple is on their cell phone. They are engaging and having an experience. They are accomploshing their mission statement. savory sorbet- Red Bell Pepper cucumber- cool refreshing. Sweet and balnved with the goat cheese. The familar flavors of sweet red bell pepper and cucumber blends well into a compforting flavor and as the goat cheese comes through with the sharpness it really ties in the experience. The sweetness and sharpness just elevates this sorbet in a decident dish. Complex yet simple comfort food. Wow! Sorbet: tarragon. I think they just keep hitting home runs! The tarragon was just simply comforting! Must try! crispy Brussels- the brussels by themselves are perfectly cooked. You can taste brussel but the sweetness of the alleppo honey complements the bittnerness of brussels. The cheese has a creamy note the balances the sweetness sage Derby cheddar and sweet- cheddar had a deep sharp flavor. Peaches were perfectly ripe. The peppery arugula definetly tied the two together. Together you get the sweetness of the peaches and they disolve and arugala comes through and disolves into the creamy cheese to round off the dish. Smoked salt added the richness and sweetness of the dish. The salt helped the peaches. The cheese flavor carries on the pallette. Duck taquitos- the mequite mole and apple pico work very well together. Tortillas bring testure. Very crispy and light center and do not interfere with the dish. The pico mole are the stars of this dish. The amount was perfect. Very satisfying and the flavor carried for awhile afyer i was done. Left a womderful taste on the pallete. Rabbit Lasagnette- Deep rich sauce. Textured nutty. Sweet soir drizzle ties the rchnes with the cool fresh mozzerella. You get a sweet, savory., hint of sour and umami expierence. pan seared scallops- appearance 11 out of 10.. The smell!!! Savory sweet. You smell peaches. Then you smell scallop. The sauce. This is a dish for the ages. Youll remember this one! Sauce has a sherbert sweetness allows you to expierence the tartness of the peaches. The sauce masks the flavor of the scallop for the first few bites then finish with the subtle brine umami flavoe of the scollop. Pallete is left with the flavor of scallop yet the tingle of citrus. Just a savory comfort flavor and expierence. Bavette Steak- perfectly cooked as requested. Chimichurry is balanced and allows the flavor of the meat to come through. The meat was tender and seasoned perfectly. The mashed potatoes were smooth and had a well balanced flavor and were thick and stood up well to the glaze and didnt become watery.

Yelp
I was a bit worried with the recent mixed reviews on Yelp, as I chose this restaurant to have dinner with my boss. When we met up, he told me his tour guide said Shift was one of the top three restaurants in Flagstaff and we must order the pickled french fries! The craft cocktails were solid. I got the non alcoholic lavender haze and it was beautifully presented and was very nice. Off to a good start! - Pickled french fries ($8): very much like salt and vinegar chips but in fry form. The three of us thought these were just ok. 3/5 - Carrot salad ($15): Wow, these were special! Concentrated carrot flavor with a slightly crispy and smoky char. The tahini yogurt was the perfect pair. 5/5 MUST GET! - Pork chop ($35): This was a winner! Juicy, full of pork flavor. My boss especially loved it and was gnawing at the bone to get every delicious morsel! This is a must get too. 5/5 - Barramundi ($35): Crispy skin, soft fish. I'm not the biggest fan of fish, but my little bite was tasty. 3.5/5 - Chocolate tart ($13): Rich and decadent, it was good, but paled in comparison to the passionfruit cremeux! 4/5 - Passionfruit cremeux ($13): So good! Tart and creamy passionfruit, the caramel was "burnt" with a deep rich flavor, and the honeycomb crisp added the perfect balanced crunch. My boss' weakness is chocolate (he ordered the tart), but he polished off the cremeux and raved about it. 5/5 A bit on the pricy side and the portions are on the small side, but the quality and presentation of each drink and dish was thumbs up. Good attentive service. A successful dinner!
