Shilla used to be the Mecca of korean bakeries but sadly has gone downhill since the opening of other korean bakeries in the area. I recently came to Shilla to relive my high school days and reminisce over their bingsoo's which I was obsessed with. But the lack of flavor, freshness, and overall state of the dessert left me feeling a little butt hurt - definitely not the Shilla I once knew. Everything tasted like it came out of a can, the ice was super coarse and instead of the fluffy bingsoo's we have all grown to love, i felt like my teeth were going to fall out from chewing so much ice. Mind you, I HATE the feeling of chewing ice...it gives me that nails on a chalkboard feeling and so I left feeling slightly disturbed. Also, I don't know if service is nonexistent because of the nonexistent customers, almost as if the employees have gotten used to the eeriness in the store but.. I almost never see anyone working here until I'm ready to pay.
So sad to see the decline of the Shilla legacy because it used to be POPPIN' a few years back, but every time I come, it's empty and the bread and desserts often are not fresh. Especially disappointing because the quality is not as great as the surrounding Korean bakeries, it's still at the same price point. With some revamped decor and fresh baked breads, shilla could still be a classic - really hope they up their game in the future.
But for now, it's gonna be a no from me dawg.
