Shima Review - Hialeah - Miami - The Infatuation

"Shima is the (twin) sister restaurant of Katana in North Beach. Exactly like Katana, you sit around a lazy stream and the sushi arrives in small boats. Prices correspond to varying plate colors and they don’t take reservations. Unlike Katana, the wait time won't have you fall into a dangerous existential spiral about how most of your life is wasted on waiting for things. Order the spider roll with the server because it won’t appear via boat travel, and it’s too good to miss. Shima is a reliable and casual sushi spot to come with your favorite group chat of two other people. But it also works great for eating alone while contemplating the physics of buoyancy as salmon nigiri floats your way." - Mariana Trabanino

Visited Shima Huntington Beach for the first time. The restaurant was clean and the staff very attentive. Unfortunately, the main dishes missed a kick on flavor.

So much fun and the food and people are wonderful! We walked right in and were quickly seated at a table with about 8 others. The chef was so funny and made the tastiest food! Can’t wait go back! Our new favorite place!!

Google
Delightful experience and delicious foods. The staff cooks in front of you in an entertaining manner and delivers fresh, savory foods that will satisfy your palette. Intimate setting so if bringing a crowd best to make a reservation. We tried a variety of appetizers as well as entrees. We were a party of 13 and all were pleased with their choices.

Google
The food was delicious, although our chef wasn't that entertaining. He did forget to season some of the food. He did mention he was supposed to be off, so it was like he wasn't even trying in the end. The whole reason my family and I chose to eat there that night was to be entertained. We could have just gone to a steak house and eat if that was the case. I was just bummed out because the other chefs in the place were putting more effort than he did...

Google
It's a cozy hibachi style restaurant. It wasn't busy at all when we went for dinner so we got attended to right away. Definitely feels like a more casual hibachi restaurant than others. Interior was a bit left to be desired but the food was good. Staff and cook were nice.

Yelp
If you're craving a fun, delicious, and unforgettable dining experience, look no further than Shima Restaurant! I recently had the pleasure of dining at their Teppan Grill with a big group, and let me tell you, it was an experience worth sharing. Shima is a Japanese restaurant offering everything from Teppan Grill to a fantastic sushi bar. Though many in our group were regulars, a few of us were first-timers, and every single one of us was blown away by the food and the atmosphere. It reminded me of the famous Benihana, but with a more affordable and, honestly, just as delicious, if not more so! I opted for the Filet Mignon with fried rice, grilled vegetables, miso soup, and a refreshing salad. The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and bursting with flavor, while the rice and veggies were equally fresh and flavorful. Each dish was expertly prepared, and you could taste the quality of the ingredients in every bite. What really stood out, though, was the experience itself. The chef cooking right at our table, flipping shrimp and rice bowls, creating fiery volcanoes of onion rings, and entertaining us while making the meal, was a highlight for everyone. It's that perfect blend of delicious food and an interactive, fun dining experience that makes Shima stand out. I've already shared my experience with friends, and I'll definitely be back. Whether you're a Teppan Grill enthusiast or a sushi lover, Shima offers something for everyone. Highly recommend it if you're in or near one of their locations (Huntington Beach and Chino). You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
The food and show was great. Once the chef was done, you kinda get rushed to hurry up eating so they can sit the next party. You do need a reservation to secure a seat. Especially on a Valentine's evening. I would go back again on a non holiday.

Yelp
Went out to dinner with mom friends who are regulars on a Monday night. The restaurant was about half full, with 2 of the 4 teppan grills almost full of people. I enjoyed the Shrimp dinner which came with fried rice, salad, and soup. Staff was attentive and took good care of us. The teppan chef was entertaining and did some cool tricks with fire.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Price was great. People friendly. They have a huge presence of locals and returning customers.

Yelp
THE DANKKKKKK. Stop and check your judgments at the door. Don't be fooled by this hole in the wall restaurant in the heart of a random shopping plaza with outdated decor and wall to wall action. If I followed my brain instead of my gut, I wouldn't be writing this review. This restaurant is FIREEEEE. Straight up authentic. We spoke to couples at our table who had been going for 15+ years to this same spot. Chefs are hilarious and accommodating. Food is delicious. Sauces are TDF. Sushi app + hibachi dinner + green tea ice cream dessert = LIFE!!!

Yelp
Love theses guys , always hustling and making sure your happy with your food . Some good humor from the owner , lots of long time employees , always a local stop for a celebration !!

Yelp
Decent Benihana type place. Chef put on a good show. Unfortunately all of the food was bland. The place was packed full of people. Half of the customers were children, but remarkably the ambiance wasn't noisy. I guess all the kids were captivated by the show. The entrees come with a shrimp appetizer. If you order steak and shrimp, you simply get more of that same shrimp. The egg rolls were a pretty good appetizer. The miso soup is watered down. The wine list is a rather low quality selection. The large bottle of Sapporo was good. Great service!

Yelp
Shima is a family run restaurant that needs to do well. I have to admit how much I love Teppanyaki. It all started living in Taiwan where it is very common and inexpensive. The restaurant is not very big but clean. The tables are not crowded together like other places. The waiter came to us after some time waiting. We ordered and our chef came. Our chef was a young guy who rattled of some slick moves with his spatula. The food was just a tad salty for me. The beef was cooked nice, and so was the shrimp. The chicken was over cooked and tasted dry. The vegetables were served last? Our whole experience was good, not great.

Yelp
We been coming to this place since open and we really want to succeed because is close to us and it's more affordable than Benihana but the service fluctuates the ladies are usually rude and not very welcoming when we come in. Plus the place is really dirty and greasy I wish they would do a good cleaning once in a while. Plus the food that used to be good lost taste and that is a bummer plain teppanyaki no way. A little observation that made me lose my appetite the chef cooking the food touches the food with his hands oftentimes and that is okay if he has gloves or clean hands but this chef had long dirty nails and that for me was the end. Please have short clean nails or gloves when you're cooking for others.

Yelp
Love that you this is local and convenient. The food was great and the chef was fun and funny!! I will never forget that "butter--fly". My son had fun with his friends for his bday
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing place here. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The cooks are funny and great at their jobs. Whenever I come here the food is always top notch. Can't stress this enough it is way better than Benihana.

Sharon A.

Yelp
My granddaughters and I had a wonderful time and enjoyed lots of delicious food!! The chef made the experience fun for the girls and he prepared our food perfectly. Great staff and a great place!!

Yelp
Came for Teppanyaki it was just ok. We were 3 at a table with other 6 people not part of our party and the chef just asked that party how they liked things etc. I had to yell out how we wanted our steak cooked etc. While we were still eating the cleaning lady kept hovering asking if we were done while I'm literally still eating my rice. Food was just ok...

Hoang N.

Yelp
Benihana food without the Benihana price! Our chef was very engaging and super attentive to our kids by keeping them entertained. Would recommend!
google avatar

Eddie S.

Yelp
Loved it. Not a big place- but comfortable and inviting. Everyone was friendly and on it with service. Did the teppan and it was great. Food quality and taste was on point.

Mandi R.

Yelp
We love this place!! The staff is all nice! And the sushi is my favorite!! We have sat at the sushi bar and at the hibachi grill and they are both great!

Yelp
Four stars for the show three stars for the food. Our chef was great but the food was mediocre. Service was good. The ambiance is ok. Nothing fancy but not low budget neither.

Yelp
We Enjoy Teppanyaki Style Cooking We've been here several times Good service Good selections Good quality Reasonable Price Always busy Looking forward to our next visit Small but mighty compared to other Teppanyaki restaurants See you Soon

Yelp
We went here on a last minute whim on a Friday night. We called to make reservations for two and they had an available spot only 45 minutes out. The chef put on an amazing show. He was funny, engaging and cooked the food perfectly. We sat with a family who were fun so I'm sure that helped. The fried rice and filet mignon were bomb. 10/10 will definitely come here again.
google avatar

Neni P.

Yelp
The food is so delicious and they have excellent customer service. The ambience is so much fun. I wish we lived closer definitely worth the drive.

Yelp
Great service and Great food! My GF and I went in for an early dinner on my birthday. We sat at the teppan bar and even thought it was only two of us the food and service was great! The place ended up getting busier and had more of a cool party atmosphere when we left, good times we will be back! Next time I am going to order more veggies as they were so good that I wanted more!

Yelp
Saturday's Long time customer? Hmmm 12 plus years. Tradition always for birthdays, always amazing. Tonight unacceptable. Albacore dish totally not fresh nor for the price. I'm a chef where is the presentation? We can all agree presentation is nice, but fresh sashimi is more important.. Also, who spends $200/$300 to be pressured to hurry up for the guess waiting outside. Lastly let me emphasize, decade long customer. Do not come to Shimas on a Saturday. (Martin) Chef was amazing (Roy) Waiter Amazing I would love to get all your opinions, not on past experiences as I've had many years of good ones. BUT your opinions on the Dish/Photo i posted of (Shima's Albacore Sashimi?

Yelp
Great food, employees are kind. Way better than Benihana, we come here often now due to the awesome service, and personality this place has.

Yelp
Consistently great! Ask for Pablo for your chef. He is great with the kids and cooks amazing

Yelp
I visited Shima yesterday looking for some good tepanyaki. The inside is very large. Our server was friendly and attentive. I ordered the steak and calamari combo with white rice. The food tasted very delicious. The bean sprouts were good as well. They had sushi on the menu, too, but the choices were a bit limited and expensive. Although the food was tasty, the food value was not great. The salad soup was just okay. The ambiance was a bit outdated, too. The food was definitely the best part of the dining experience. The service was good too.
google avatar

Jesus Q.

Yelp
I took the family there, and everyone had a great time! Very entertaining very friendly the food was good and fresh! I would recommend this restaurant for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
We wanted a more authentic teppan experience not benihana so we decided to try this place. Friendly staff a little rushed atmosphere. The show the great but the food was so salty he just kept putting salt and soy sauce on everything he cooked my vegetables till they were soggy and disintegrating and the seed oils? He just poured on that gmo vegetable oil or whatever it was and cooked my food at high heat till all I could taste was salt. I had a bad headache after . My shrimp was dried out my daughter got the steak it was cooked good but no one else liked the rice or vegetables very disappointed won't be back .

Yelp
We had grandsons 18th birthday party here. Great food Attentive waiter Chef was enthusiastic and skilled Will go back for sure

Natalie S.

Yelp
Food was great but "show" was lackluster. Saw other cooks putting on a great show. All in all I would go again.

Yelp
What a fun new gem we have found with Shima! We just had dinner here for the first time and we love it! Situated next to our fav Chinese takeout "Egg Roll King", we had meant to stop in for months. So happy we did! We were fortunate enough to be seated with the sweetest and coolest family who told us to always ask for Mario. Not only did he did Mario have us laughing, but the food was amazing. Perfect steak and shrimp combos for us. I couldn't wait to dive into leftovers the next day. We arrived early and our new friends said there would be a line out the door before we knew it. He was right! We will be back again and again and again!!! Sorry no pictures... we were having to much fun.

Yelp
Visited on a Saturday for date night, and have no complaints! I called for a reservation a few hours before dining. Because there are limited teppan stations available, I would highly recommend making a reservation if your group is larger. Our chef was entertaining and the food was delicious. We tried the teriyaki chicken and teriyaki steak, which are both served with miso soup, salad with ginger dressing, rice, and shrimp. If teppan isn't your style, Shima also offers sushi and various appetizers. Looking forward to visiting again.

Yelp
Finally tried Shima after only frequenting Matsu. I love Matsu but having to get a reservation days in advance sometimes is a big hassle. I made a reservation for Shima on a Friday night and could have just walked in. It does get busy but, I feel the service moves a little more quickly here. As soon as we were seated we were able to put in our drink order, minutes later our teppan order. Our waiter was very efficient. The chef came out quickly as well. Normally with teppan, you wait might be waiting a while...not here! Our chef was very nice and personable. Our food was very good. Was it as good as Matsu? Yes. Better? Possibly, maybe... These places tend to all taste the same to me. I've never had a bad teppan meal. If you are in the mood for teppan, definitely come here. Ambiance isn't as nice as Matsu but the service is fast, everyone is very nice, the food is very good and its waaaaaay easier to get into. One other thing, the location is also better than Matsu with much better parking!

Yelp
Great level of service. We walked in on a Thursday without a dinner reservation during graduation season and they were able to accommodate a party of 5 within a few minutes. The place is relatively small, so it fills up quickly. I highly recommend making reservations. The person cooking was entertaining. We all got a kick out of the fake mustard squirt. I was an easy target for sure. I'd say the drinks were the best part of the meal. The Shirley temples were epic. The kids loved them and there is a good selection of beer. The food was average for the price and not super flavorful, unless you like butter. The amount of butter in the fried rice was criminal. Good thing I just ordered the white rice, although I had to watch my family suffer the greasy consequences of their choices. I ordered the teriyaki chicken and the meat was a bit tough. I'm not sure why. Maybe it was previously frozen? Not sure. I also tasted the New York steak and it was better than my dish. I liked the vegetables. They were cooked well. The salad was good too. One thing that did bother me was that the shrimp was cooked on the same grill and the same spatula as the other meat. I have a huge aversion to crustaceans and it made me cringe a bit to watch all the cross contamination. I let him know from the beginning that I didn't want any shrimp and didn't get served any. I just think it was a bit gross. Overall it was a fun experience, 5 stars for service and the good time, 2 stars for food and value for the money, ending up at 3 stars for me.

Judy M.

Yelp
We ordered chicken, shrimp and steak combination and the food is cooked perfectly, it was late evening on Saturday and the restaurant was overall excellent. But the Green tea Ice cream was too soft and melted
google avatar

Nicole P.

Yelp
Fun environment for all ages and good food! Good for large groups but I recommend reservations.

Yelp
Best non Benihana teppan place around. The service is always great. They have sushi and teppan for those who want options. Plus they are very accommodating for people with children or elderly family members. Plus they did an update on the interior and it looks much nicer than it used to.
google avatar

Brittany F.

Yelp
Gave a bigger serving than any other hibachi place I've been too. 10/10 I'm not going to benihanas for ever again after ordering from this place. Same price for a much bigger portion and better service!

Taylor K.

Yelp
Awesome place for kids and families. Go early as it gets crowded. Chefs were funny and did what you would expect with the fire volcano and everything.

Scott R.

Yelp
Food is always top notch. Great experience. Now I need 85 characters to make it count

Yelp
We had a party of 11 and they went out of their way to accommodate us. Food was great, entertainment of our Chef, excellent! We will be back again!

Yelp
It's fun and great. Listen if you don't make a reservation for Friday, Saturday or Sunday dinner hours you can't get mad you and your party of 8 are having to wait. So what had happened was: My companion and I decided we wanted to get dinner around 530pm on. Saturday. We've been here a handful of times MIDWEEK with no reservations and were seated immediately. But this Saturday Everywhere else had a 3-4hr wait. But we waited maybe 1hr here. We were told 30mins but they kept bringing us beers so we were fine with it. We were watching the poor staff getting yelled at because a unreserved party was waiting over 30mins. So we just hid in the corner of the sushi bar to stay out of their way. Once seated we received more drinks, and appetizers super fast. We were seated with a young family and a single gentleman. The chef was there to to entertain the young family. We were just there for the good food. My companion and I always share. It's so much food! Appetizers of the gyoza, NY Steak plate, with fried rice and mixed vegetables as the sides. Comes out perfect every time and we leave super full. I love this small Shima. They are so good and the services is always great. The wait itself screams how great they are.

Chan N.

Yelp
Celebrated my Birthday at Shima and had the Tepanyaki set dinner. Would like to show our appreciation to our Chef for the evening Mr Sam Yann, who not only cooked great food but also gave us such a wonderful evening. Been to Shima a few times over the last 2-3 years and tonight's dinner cooked by him was the best by far. Especially loved the King Prawns. Really glad we picked this place for the evening. Kudos to the team!

Kristen M.

Yelp
The food is always amazing. One of our go to spots for special occasions. Ambiance is great. Chefs are always fun and entertaining. Highly recommend.

Allison S.

Yelp
We came here after having a horrible experience at a 5 star restaurant, drove 45 minutes to come here and I'm so glad we did! The service is always exceptional! The food was even better. Thank you chitty chitty bang bang for the BEST SERVICE AND EVEN BETTER JOKES! We LOVE it here! FIVE STARS IS NOT ENOUGH!

Eva M.

Yelp
Food was excellent & great presentation!! A little wait but worth it, we celebrated a Birthday & waitress was very helpful with the cake, etc

Amber S.

Yelp
I called on a Friday night and they got my friends and I in last minute for teppan!! I am writing this review because I used to always go to Matsu but this place blows Matsu out of the water!! This place is so good and Martin (aka chitty chitty bang bang) was the most amazing chef that changed it up and made my teppan experience different than the typical teppan jokes and dinner and THE FOOD WAS SO AMAZING!! Lia was such a great server and was not only attentive but friendly and made my experience so amazing! If I can recommend a raise or recognition to these two I would over and over again! After talking to Lia this just seemed like this was typical of all employees at Shima! I recommend this place to anyone and everyone!!
google avatar

Megan S.

Yelp
A Hidden gem! We had great sushi, teppan and it was easy to get in. Definitely coming back!

John R.

Yelp
First time coming to this restaurant and I will 100% be coming back again. I ordered the Shima steak and calimari and my mom ordered the Shima steak and chicken. It was cooked to perfection! Our chef, Angel, was an absolute joy to watch. If you are looking for a teppan restaurant in Huntington you need to come here!
