"Tucked in the corner on the second floor of the Del Mar Plaza, you’ll find this quaint Japanese restaurant with a sushi bar and outdoor patio space. The sashimi is delightful, along with hot dishes like grilled yellowtail collar. Happy hour specials run Monday to Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. with deals on sushi rolls and Japanese draft beer." - Helen I. Hwang

The best sushi I’ve had in the US. We ordered omakase with full discretion to the chef. He completely treated us, and it was clear many of the dishes he served us were his personal passion that he wanted to share. I’ve never had that much variety and/or freshness in seafood, and didn’t expect to have a meal like this on a random Sunday. Even after the main meal, he wouldn’t stop making new pieces to demonstrate new recipes. Was touched by his passion, and would absolutely recommend!

I came here in August with my friend for a 1:00 PM lunch on a Saturday, first time here. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor patio seating with a nice view. The patio was fairly busy. We were able to get the last table for 2 in the shade. The hostess/server, Kyoko sat us and took our drink order. She was very rushed, but still attentive, maybe understaffed? The poor women was running all over the place. We ordered a couple beers along with Sea Urchin, Yellowtail, Tuna, Salmon, Eel, Masago with Quail Eggs Nigiri, and a Fried Soft Shell Crab appetizer. All the sushi was fresh and presented well. The quality of the fish was very average as compared to other Del Mar competitors, but for the prices which was very reasonable it was good. Take note, my favorite part of the meal was the Soft Shell Crab appetizer...that was fantastic. I could of eaten a whole appetizer myself! I would definitely come back for lunch. Atmosphere: nice, great patio. Service: good. Food: good (I would come for lunch only)

The area is beautiful, the place is nice, our waitress was great and attentive. I felt the prices were quite high given the portion sizes, but we have enjoyed everything we got. I loved the eggplant stir fry and the tempura - the veg selection in the tempura mix was so great! And, I had a veggie roll. One of the best veg rolls I have had in a long time! Loved it!

Extremely delicious Sushi. The environment was great. Wonderful service. Glad we found this spot as it will be our go to sushi place moving forward. And the sunset during dinner was to die for.

I love the foods so much!!! But the waiter made me feel upset. Why I said that because 1. we’re waiting over 20 minutes and no one comes asking if we’re ready to order or don’t even have a cup of water. 2. In this 20 minutes 3 waiters passing by us and every one went to asking the 2 different table who was came in the store after than we were. 3. We have to calling the waiter come over to help us order food and I feel that’s rude. 4. For 1 hrs dinner only has 1 waiter come by ask how’s the food and adding water for us. I mean it is very nice to have “peaceful dinner” but some how we also need service too, right?(like order more food/drinks etc) If not what’s the reason we pay for the tips?

A very decent Japanese restaurant. Their food was not only tasty but the garnishing looked great as well. Each dish was very delicate. We ordered several dishes and I liked the beef tongue the most. The service was very nice and the atmosphere was pleasant.

So nice to try this Japanese restaurant out in Del Mar. This place has an amazing ocean view. It is really really popular. I have to say the service is extremely slow, that makes me almost give a 4 star, but I can tell they really need more staffs. The waitress is nice, she really tried hard to make everyone has service. But it is super slow…. We waited over 30 minutes to place our food order. Gladly the foods came to our table not too slow. And all the foods are very delicious. I love their menu, you can get almost anything that you want from a Japanese restaurant, even including sukiyaki hotpot and grilled beef tongue. I was craving for cold soba noodles, and I enjoyed my food. I just hope they can hire more staffs soon.

This is truly an excellent place for food and atmosphere. If you’re thinking of going on a romantic date, this is a great place to go. Also, the vegetarian and vegan options were endless!

Yelp
Excellent service. Excellent staff. Excellent food. Excellent atmosphere!! We celebrated our wedding anniversary here and couldn't be happier with our choice of restaurant! From the time we walked in until the time we walked out we were served with genuine smiles and caring staff. We loved our food and went overboard with ordering, but ate everything up and loved the quality and variety of their menu!!! Everything was fresh, tasty, and well balanced. What a gem! Will be coming back on our next trip to Del Mar.

Yelp
I love this spot! My husband took me here years ago when we first started dating. We came back & the quality is still amazing. It might be a bit tricky to find for first timers if you park in the parking structure, but during the day it has many cute spots for a quick photo op. Service is pretty good. Everything was made quickly, the quality of the food was fresh, & they have good sake options. The scallops & black cod was so buttery, I could eat it everyday if I could. Beef tongue was good, especially when you add a pinch of salt to it. Steak was the perfect size since we like to order a lot of stuff to share. The calamari is amazing! She's thick, juicy on the inside & crispy on the outside. Not too much batter either, just how I like. The duck was probably one of the best items hands down. The sauce that it's cooked in is perfection & goes so well with the mushrooms on the side. It's great for bringing friends, coworkers or even for a date. We come here often now & I'm so happy they stay consistent with the quality.

Yelp
I came here for a late lunch (by the way they close at 2). There are lunch specials for reasonable prices, considering sushi prices in this area are astronomical. I got two rolls and a soup for under $20. Sushi was ok. There is outdoor and indoor seating.

Caitlin D.

Yelp
This was my first time eating at a restaurant alone: The hostess/waitress was really nice and patient. The interior was nice and had a theme. The music was relaxing with jazz or piano. Lots of seating available-- outdoor, indoor, at the bar. I sat at a two person table near the restrooms at the back of the restaurant. There's no physical menu, just two QR Codes-- one for drink and the other for food. I ordered the pork cutlet ($15) and a sprite ($3). The sprite was nice and cold and she even put ice in the cup which was nice. The pork cutlet doesn't come with rice (she mentioned), but luckily it came with shredded cabbage, one piece of lettuce, a lemon wedge, and sauce. The sauce was tangy and vinegary. Very nice addition to cut through the fried part. I've never had pork cutlet before so I'm unsure if all of them have bite when you chew. It felt like it was a tad dry, but I'm not sure if it is supposed to be that way or not. Overall, a great lunch for a long walk. Everyone working there was really nice, they welcomed you in and said goodbye when you leave too.

Yelp
This place was so good! I loved that they had cooked items like chicken wings and steak. My hubby who does not care for sushi was super happy he found stuff he liked. I loved the seaweed and cucumber salad. Will order that again! I really enjoyed the chicken wings. Very fresh and prepared well My hubby loved the grilled steak and the sautéd spinach . We also had the Gogo roll. And the assorted sushi platter. I love that the menus have photos! Makes it easy to order Sitting outside was nice. Will Come back soon!

Yelp
Beautiful ambiance on the outside patio of the 15th Street Plaza. They've got a nice bar inside and there is a sushi bar and tables inside that you can sit at to. This is a great lunch spot or a beautiful place to sit on the patio in the evening. They've got everything from great sushi to cooked food and noodles. The sashimi is good pretty good quality I would say A step above your average sushi bar but not yet blue ocean or Botto or Ken's quality. I don't know what's going on with the ponzu sauce game these days but if you want some they charge you for it.

Yelp
Great little restaurant with an outside with lovey views. Good variety of Izakaya choices. We had the tempura (shrimp, kabocha, eggplant, green beans combo), broiled Saba with rice, teriyaki salmon, hamachi crudo with jalapeños; all delicious . They also have numerous sushi, sashimi and roll combinations as well. Sushi is excellent, tasty and fresh. Service is very attentive and friendly.

Yelp
They are not friendly at all. Don't waste your money there. I am a Japanese and I know it. If the customer service is not good, the food is not good as well. I have been there in October and this month. Both time the female server and the host are not good at all. Their foods are pretty good but if the service is not good, everything is not good. Avoid them!!! I visited all the way from Los Angeles. They are mean and terrible. If they are working in Japan, they are trash.

Yelp
Three generations celebrated my grandpa's 89th birthday here and it was amazing. Most of the time when a restaurant already has a great view, the food doesn't need to be that good. But after the first few appetizers one word kept coming from all of us: Authentic. For a table of 7 adults, we ordered the following. Everything was solid, but the items that were absolute hits with the entire group were ordered twice. It was a perfect late summer day out on the patio. Soft tofu x2 (grated fresh ginger and bonito brought this back to my childhood) Rainbow carpaccio x2 (came with a perfect watermelon radish garnish) Grilled beef tongue x2 Assorted sashimi platter x2 Assorted sushi platter x2 Tempura Cold soba x2 Stir fried shishitos Takowasabi (for the octopus fans) Tonkatsu (the authentic marker was the side of spicy Japanese mustard in addition to the traditional sauce and cabbage) Hamachi Kama - they were out so we tried miso cod instead and this was also a crowd pleaser I ordered a Calpico and my husband ordered an iced green tea, but by the time we realized they hadn't come out dinner was almost over. Being pregnant I still wanted my drink but hubs was ok without anyways. For dessert, we split the following: Green ice cream x3 yes Green tea cake + ice cream - and the green tea cake was light and not too sweet, really nice. This place managed to exceed everyone's expectations. One of the perks for us is the patio is dog friendly. We're definitely coming back.

Yelp
Great location with a small outdoor deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean like the neighboring restaurants at the Del Mar Plaza. Very authentic and delicious Japanese food. The fish was very fresh. The rolls were well done albeit fairly standard. They also offer several small hot and cold appetizers which are very good - think Japanese tapas. Service was caring and attentive.

Yelp
I went here with my wife for our anniversary. We felt the staff behavior was very different from our visit last year. I think they had not been open long then. Food seemed slightly lower in quality... in general. Examples: Edamame was cool and didn't have much salt. The meat dish I ordered, at the waiters recommendation was really chewy. Tasty, but chewy. Should have gone with the Garlic meat dish. It is more popular. Yellowtail sushi was average. Things that went well: Salmon sashimi - perfect. Miso soup - great California rolls - great The seating outside was nice with the sunset. We asked for a table closer for an ocean view but were denied and told there were other reservations. We watched and no one came for about 30-40 minutes. We asked the same lady something about the menu and she gave a second negative response. Guess she didn't like us for some reason. Conversation at neighboring tables subtracted from the experience but that's not the fault of the restaurant.

Mindy O.

Yelp
This was my first visit. It was a bit hard to find in Del Mar Plaza. Nice outdoor patio but I was a little disappointed that we did not see ocean view from there. It's an "izakaya", so they have an extensive small dishes menu. We went there for sushi, so we ordered sushi & sashimi combo and chrashi. I had sushi and sashimi combo. It was good and delicious but not super amazing and impressive. Fish on nigiri and sashimi were mostly the same and repeating. I wish sashimi had different kind of fish. My friend enjoyed her chirashi. Del Mar Plaza parking is one hour free, and then additional $3 every 30 min. My friend got double charged the additional parking fee by paying with the QR code. She had to input all her info just to pay a fee bucks (and then get double charged!) The parking company has no customer service to get the refund. I suggest using a pay station on the exit level and physically swiping your credit card, instead of the QR code, no need to input all the personal info in your phone to pay the parking ticket. This parking issue sort of took away from our dining experience there.

Yelp
Other reviewers aren't kidding when they say that the staff gets serious about closing time. Though they were friendly about it, various team members came by our table every few minutes to remind us that it was "last call" and that they were closing soon. This was punctuated by the staff loudly and hurriedly bussing tables around us - and it was only 8:30 pm on a Saturday when they're open until 9 pm. It was kind of funny since I expected it. Had I not known, I might have thought it was rude. That aside, the location is really pretty. We sat on the patio around sunset and we were comfortable and warm. The sunshades interfered with our view of the ocean, but the patio itself was pleasant. Additionally, we were seated right away, thanks to making a 7:30 pm reservation in advance. They suggest you scan a QR code to see the menu, but it's a little awkward. They do have physical menus but you have to ask for one. I'd recommend doing so. The menu is vast and it's much easier to see all they have to offer with a physical menu. We were greeted by our server fairly quickly. He was clearly slammed, but he managed to take our drink and appetizer orders right away. Between the four of us, we had two Sapporos, a sake sampler, a glass of chardonnay, some gyoza and some garlic edamame. The drinks were great and the gyoza got good reviews from the other couple in our party. However, the garlic edamame was soggy and messy. I'd skip it if I had known. We ordered a variety of sashimi, nigiri, a specialty roll (Tuna Wasabi Roll), and some vegetable tempura - which came out with shrimp in it. Since no one had a shrimp allergy, we didn't send it back - but it's something to keep an eye on if you do have a food allergy. Everyone enjoyed their meals. The fish was fresh, though a bit on the small side for the price. I especially noticed this with the salmon nigiri. The Tuna Wasabi Roll was a winner. My husband's chirashi was good, but it was packed in a dish that resembled a poke bowl. It was kind of a weird presentation. Plus, as with the sake sampler, it would have been nice to get a quick description of what was in front of him, but the server was really swamped. TLDR: Was it the best tasting sushi I've ever had? No. However, it was pretty good. The food and drinks were tasty, even if on the small side, and the staff was rushed but friendly. The ambiance was pleasing and comfortable. All things considered, including the price, this would be a nice place for a special occasion but I wouldn't consider it a regular go-to place for great sushi.

Yelp
I have eaten here a few times and started integrating it into one of my usual after-work places! They have a decent happy hour with lots of food and drink options, the Lychee martini is one of my favorite things to get here. Very flavorful yet not overpowering. Every roll I have gotten here has been amazing, fresh, and presented beautifully. Edamame and the Takoyaki make great starters as well. The staff is amazing here as well. they are always so friendly and fast. This spot is a great place to come hang out with a view, and eat some good food!

Mei T.

Yelp
I came here with my coworkers after work and have mixed feelings about this place. The sushi and cooked dishes were good, but what I can't get over is why some of the sashimi dishes did not come with ginger or wasabi. We ordered the following and only ONE came with a decent amount of ginger (by decent I mean 6-8 pieces). Some came with 1-2 pieces of ginger, while others had none. - Rainbow carpaccio - NO GINGER - Salmon tataki - NO GINGER - Halibut usuzukur (sashimi) - NO GINGER - Hokkai roll - NO GINGER - Lobster salmon roll - 1 piece of ginger - Eel sushi - 2 big pieces of ginger - 2 orders of salmon belly sashimi - 6-8 pieces of ginger - Hamachi Kama - Salmom Kama - Agedashi tofu - Skewered scallops - Beef tongue - Wagu beef steak - House green salad - 2 orders of oyster shooters What I can't get over is why some of the sashimi dishes did not come with ginger. When I asked for more ginger, the waitress said there was a charge. I pointed out that some of the raw dishes did not come with ginger and she said, "it's not eaten with ginger, that's how we serve it." I've been to countless sushi restaurants, but this was the first time I was told that sashimi was not eaten with ginger. I don't mind paying $2 for a small bowl of ginger but felt all of the raw dishes should come with it. I enjoyed all of the raw and cooked dishes, but the restaurant's stinginess with ginger left a bad impression on me. We enjoyed the beautiful view of Del Mar Beach from our table and came here specifically for the view. The food was good, but not great, so aside from the view, I don't have a lot of reasons to return.

Yelp
A true Japanese izakaya I am in love, love all they have from the sashimi, the Shabu Shabu, love the soba and tempura, I tried the Wagyu Shabu Shabu and was so oishii they only have it for Dec so come get it asap, the staff is so friendly and love how it is in Del Mar with the beautiful views not so far away, the sake is really great too:)

Yosef L.

Yelp
Not the friendliest staff. We were excited about the menu but when we arrived we were told no tables outside were available eventhough only half were seated. With that the individual at the front could not communicate to us why only that the inside was all that was available we ddecided not to take our business here. No worries we went to another sushi restaurant with a great menu and service.

Koji S.

Yelp
Highly recommend, as it was highly recommended to us. This has become our go-to family celebration restaurant, and even great for takeout!

Lara P.

Yelp
We were treated so poorly that we moved on. Came in at 4:45 and we were told at the restaurant isn't open until five. No problem. Came back at 4:55. And sat outside at a table in the extremely rude hostess told me to come inside at in five minutes and she'll see me. I asked her to come out to me in five minutes.. I then asked to use the restroom and she told me they were closed. It was now four minutes until they opened. unbelievable. Then told me I couldn't sit outside at the table. We wanted because of a reservation. Then an Asian family walked up. They didn't have a reservation and she set them at the table. I was sitting at. at that point we left I was appalled at how rude the entire staff was. food is too expensive in life is too short to be treated rudely. We sat upstairs at I'il fornio which overlooked this place. In the hour and a half we ate only three tables were taken outside absolutely ridiculous. I would never go here.

Arash S.

Yelp
Have you ever been to a sushi place that charges you for extra ginger? Have you ever paid $25/roll for mediocre sushi made with stale fish? Or have you ever been to any restaurant in the US that charges you for a refill on fountain drink? Have you ever ordered medium steak and it arrived well-done? How about a tiny portion of edamame that's half cold and half hot? Have you been to any full-service restaurant that still doesn't have paper menus 2 years after covid? Well if your answer is no to these questions, Shimbashi Izakaya is the perfect place to experience all of these at one sitting. We ate there on Aug 25 at lunch and will never be back. In fact, I don't think anyone would eat twice here. They just have no idea how to run a restaurant in an upscale (or any) neighborhood.

Bob K.

Yelp
We were scouring Yelp when we arrived in Del Mar. We were so glad we found this restaurant. The salmon collar, the pork gyosa, and the spicy tuna roll were all excellent.

Steve H.

Yelp
So.. Sushi is fresh, really good, actually. Dark excellent tuna, delicious rolls.. all fine.. but we have to talk about the Menu! Just a miserable way to start a meal. There are two QR codes on the table, and no paper menus. One QR is "Drinks" and one "Food". Some tables get 3 QR codes, not sure why. One QR code goes to some iWallet site that has no visible links. The second QR code goes to a super-slow hop-scotch through iWallet and then Google Docs for the food menu. We all did the COVID QR thing, I get it.. but Shimbashi has no useable T-Mobile or Sprint service inside. We all had to get on the one phone that had service (Verizon) and start downloading a massive graphical Google Doc. We asked for paper menu, but they only had one out-of-date one with no descriptions. Limit one menu per table. (Seriously?) 10 minutes after sitting down, everyone on their phones trying to zoom into sushi pictures in a google doc, like some kind of dystopian metaverse.. I still had no idea where to find their drink menu. Hardest I ever had to work to order something. Eventually just got whatever is on draft. Would be a nice restaurant if they would kindly print some menus. Bring a laptop or iPad? Print your own menu at home? For what Del Mar sushi costs, maybe they could, I dunno, run down to Kinkos?

Noriko C.

Yelp
Happy Anniversary to us....what a great place to celebrate our 22nd anniversary! Great view (if you sat outside) but lol we chose to sit inside. Seats are close together...felt like we were eating with the table next to us. Ignore the seating...cuz it's all about the food! There was nothing I can find wrong with the food. I honestly felt like I was in Japan. Everyone was speaking Japanese, so for me it felt like home. We started with oyster shooters (2 shots) ($12.00), then followed by seared beef tataki ponzu ($21), rainbow carpaccio ($23), Takoyaki ($8), skewered scallops ($7), Ginger pork ($15), softshell crab fried ($16), shrimp tempura - 5 pcs ($16) and lobster salmon roll ($19)....total was $149 I gotta say my favorite was the oyster shooters. I think I could have done like 3 more of those. Service was great. So many people helped us and they were all very friendly and took care of our needs. I like when you can call on anyone who just walks by and they can help you. I've been to places where they say "Oh let me get your waitress/waiter."....and they never get them! Ambiance is great. From my view I was able to watch all 3 of the sushi chefs hard at work. Bartender was mixing her drinks. I can see some of the blue ocean from my seat. Small place inside, but you can sit at the bar and sit at the sushi bar or sit outdoors! I saw some to-go orders being placed and getting prepared. Parking....don't miss the parking garage or you have to go all the way down and turn back around. Once inside the garage (don't forget to take your ticket)...parking can be limited at peek times (that was the case for us), so we ended up going all the way to the bottom of the garage and finally finding a spot. Take your ticket with you, so you can pay for your parking at the kiosk found inside the garage near the elevators. We were slightly late for our 5:15pm reservation because we were going around the plaza looking for this place. Just remember its to the far right of the parking lot. Gochisosama deshita....we'll be back soon!Happy

Jay H.

Yelp
Love love love everything about this place. It is rare to see and taste the ocean from the same spot. lol. Try their omakase. Omg. Good! Talk to the sushi chef. He made "wasabi the snowman" and sang along. Yes he did! You will have a good time. You sit inside or outside, guaranteed good experience.

Elle M.

Yelp
First time going and it was solid. Location is cute. definitely good for a lunch or dinner gathering because you can walk around and see scenery after you eat. there is parking in a garage under the establishment. ( I heard it gets packed but I got there at a good time and easily found a spot) Can't say there wasn't anything I didn't like but wasn't wowed all that much either. I will say I did not pay any portion of the bill when I ate here, so that might have an affect on my thoughts a bit... BUT Here are the things I would come back to eat here and recommend you try if you go : 1. Agedashi Tofu 2.Takoyaki 3. Mackerel Honorable mentions to the garlic edamame and scallops. I don't usually go out of my way to order these but the garlic in the edamame was yummy and scallops were buttery. *** because I did not order, I am unable to give you a detailed list of the food we ate. (( I did not even try a roll or all the nigiri in the pictures given but I am sure they would have heightened my rating ( so take this with a grain of salt and see for yourselves how you enjoy the place***

Diane C.

Yelp
During the Pandemic this was one of our rotations to support our local restaurants. We absolutely love the food here! We came by yesterday with no reservation but they were kind enough to find a table outside for us. They did let us know that they'll need that table at 7pm for a group that has a reservation. Not a problem! We ordered... Cucumber with sesame salad Shishito peppers Yellowtail with jalapenos Lemon albacore roll Silverio roll 2 Sapporo light Everything was very fresh and delicious! Definitely worth every penny!

Mar B.

Yelp
We recently dined 2 weeks B2B, and both times, the host/serve, Yoko, was curt and rude. When we asked to stay a bit longer, she said no because they were booked even though they were many empty tables and no one waiting. She became downright disrespectful and combative, which drove up my anger level. The disrespect she displayed was never something I've experienced and left such a bad impression on me. If you are only allowed to dine for 1.5 hrs there, they should inform you at the time you make a reservation. No surprise, I'm never going back and will tell everyone I can about the bad service I had there.

Ann Y.

Yelp
NOT BABY FRIENDLY My family and I had dinner here last night and was disappointed. Not only was it super expensive but the food portion was small and wasn't nothing to rave about. We're Japanese so we know what's tasty and this place was meh. The only thing yummy was their takoyaki w/ a unique truffle sauce, hamachi kama and black miso cod. Everything else including their sushi was tiny and meh. How expensive is it? They charge 1/2 bottle of sake the same price as a full bottle at other restaurants. We spent $400. Small cut pieces of sushi, overcooked beef tataki (it's supposed to be rare but it was well done brown) and not that fresh and flavorless tempura it was all not worth the money. WORST PART. While I was feeding my baby avocado and rice (rice I bought from them and avocado and nori I bring from home) the waitress told me I can't do that and to buy slices of avocado from them! She made me put my avocado away! I told her my baby was 1 years old and couldn't finish a kids meal she just gave me a look and walked away. It's not like I brought in McDonalds for a 5yr old. Wow. 恥を知れ Go elsewhere for better service and food. Scroll to bottom and see a lot of their 1-star reviews are actually hidden from view.

Yelp
Had some time to spare before a cooking class and this place came up with some awesome reviews and quickly made an OpenTable reservation for 1. Customer service was so welcoming and attentive, they had great control of the whole restaurant which was fully packed. Servers, sushi chefs, and bussers were on their game and the meal was quick and so delicious. Didn't get many large items but what I did order black code, cold soba, and the garlic noodles was so delicious! For sure will be back with a larger party to order many more items to share!

Yelp
I was craving some sushi & found this spot while I was in Del Mar. They have one heck of a happy hour menu. Some of the popular dishes are $5! I wanted to try some veggie items along with some fish / chicken dishes & they had a wide range of options. I got the veggie gyoza to start. Very good. The veggie inside was a bit bland but the actual wonton was delicious. Add some hot sauce and it was just fine! The chicken was perfectly cooked & tasted great. The yellowtail with jalapeño was fresh. Would definitely order this again when I come back! The seaweed salad & smashed cucumbers were SO GOOD. I cleared every plate here real quickly lol. I got mochi for dessert, you get 2 for $6. The strawberry & mango are so yummy. The mango was definitely my favorite! You really can't go wrong with a delicious spot with great prices & services. They also have a view of the beach from the outside seating! So it's all around a great spot for your next dinner :)

Yelp
This place is pretty good the sushi is very fresh, authentic Japanese food and Champon noddles is legit! The service is decent, the ambiance is good for family and friends. There is no reservation first come first serve. The parking lot can be busy during peak hours.

Yelp
Shimbashi is extraordinary. Not only do they have unusual and delicious seasonal Japanese Restaurant, but they have a great assortment of sake to go with it. Went here for my birthday, had the tasting menu, and everyone in the group LOVED it. What a jewel!

Yelp
The best authentic Japanese food in San Diego! My favorites include the yellow tail w/jalapeño appetizer, the grilled salmon collar and the Una Ju. We came for a late lunch so it wasn't too busy. The service was personable and friendly. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Del Mar is a place my family vacations, and we've been eating at Shimbashi for years. This is a great spot for sushi, and everything here is prepared incredible well. In addition, there's a great view, since this location is up on a hill facing the ocean. Recently, we came here for my dad's birthday. Once the staff knew about his birthday, they really went above and beyond for us, in terms of things they "added on" to make his day really special. PROPS: Great food, great location, great view, great service. SLOPS: There's limited seating, and it's a bit cozy. Recommend getting a reservation, if you don't want to wait to eat.

Yelp
Came here for a valentines dinner. Ambiance and interior was very nice and romantic with dim lighting! All the dishes was presented very nicely. However the food tasted pretty mediocre for its price. Overall, it was just decent and nothing special; I would look else where in SD if you're looking for food with more flavor and higher quality sushi. Seared pepper tuna salad with onion wasabi dressing 5/10 $25: this was a chefs recommendation dish. Tuna needed more flavor and sauce and was a weird gummy texture. Not a fan and wouldn't get it again. Otoro sushi 8/10 $19 for 2 pieces: so fresh, buttery and delicious! It is pricey for what you get as the o toro was cut super thinly and pretty small. Hokkai roll 7/10 $19: overall just ok... tasted like a very basic spicy Mayo California roll with some salmon. Silverio roll 5/10 $20: just ok too.... Sushi was very dry and needed more sauce. Kind of tasted like grocery store sushi.

Yelp
Have been here multiple times but our most recent experience wasn't great. Service was average and the waiter picked up plates carelessly and spilt soy sauce into my sake and over the table and just walked away. I had to ask someone to come clean it up. And my glass of sake wasted as well - they didn't offer to replenish and I didn't care at that time. Paid the bill and left

Yelp
Nice Japanese sushi place. The food was tasty. It's an izakaya so you order a bunch of small plates. I think the best one we had was the teriyaki salmon. Although everything was fresh, it didn't bowl me over. And I felt it was pricier than other places. It could be because you're paying for the location and view.

Yelp
We went here for my Mom's birthday dinner and before we came, we were hiking at the Torrey Pines State Park the whole afternoon. We were starving when we got to this restaurant. Apparently, they are a popular sushi place around this area and all their outside seating was already reserved. We could not see the ocean from outside anyway but the fresh air is nice. Since we were seated inside, it was a bit dark. The waitresses were very kind and accommodating to us. We were a mix of vegans and non-vegans and they had options for both. My baby son also has a bunch of allergies but they accommodated to that and made him a stir-fry without soy, sesame, nuts, and dairy. I was very thankful! I ordered some veggie tempuras and a vegetable roll. We were all kind of picking from each others plates lol. The food tasted fresh and authentic! This place is a bit fancier than what we were used to with sushi places so we didn't order too much. Also, since it's an Izakaya type of restaurant, portions were smaller than what we are used to in other sushi places. Our food tasted great but since we were all hungry and food portions were smaller, there was literally nothing left in anyone's plate! I recommend this place to those who like to have light meals and authentic Japanese food and ambiance.

Yelp
I loved this place! The vibes were cozy and our food was delicious. Service was also great. Go during daylight so you get a great view of the water! The tuna roll was very good and our garlic edamame was delectable. Will return!

Yelp
Stopped in without reservations on Friday at 5pm, not many tables were filled but still told we had limited choices where to sit (so were 4-5 other small groups after us). Luckily, we chose to pull up a stool at the bar because Satomi (think that's right) was so friendly and helpful. Even though she was super busy (I almost felt the need to take a nap after watching her move around so much) she checked in with us often and the drinks & food came quickly. We ordered a mojito & glass of wine, edamame, Goldeneye Snapper sushi (day's special) and the Protein Roll which was delicious wrapped in cucumber instead of seaweed. Mango & strawberry mochi were the perfect end for our light meal, everything was super fresh and tasty. Glad we're not big eaters since the prices are high (we blame SoCal), but for the quality & atmosphere we felt it was definitely worth the extra bucks.

Yelp
Came for happy hour which made it more reasonable. Food was great and good time chillin with my son here. Good environment

Yelp
Everything is extremely average and everything is wayyyyyyyy overpriced. Outdoor seats are also extremely uncomfortable. Something like Station Sushi in Solana Beach is just as good (if not better) than Shimbashi and way cheaper. Food wasn't bad at all but did not blow me or my date away like I was expecting. Service was a 7/10 so that was cool. Honestly won't be coming back here again

Yelp
We had the oysters as appetizers and I ordered the Del Mar rolls. Both were so delicious. The waitress recommended this beautiful martini and said it was very popular. I really enjoyed it. You have a direct view of the sun setting over the ocean and it was stunning. Great service, great food, very nice place to eat.

Yelp
Are you looking for authentic Japanese food and Sushi? Then move on. This is definitely not it. We couldn't even finish what we ordered because it was pretty bad. My husband and I chose this place as our final place to dine in San Diego before we returned to Honolulu. However, the food was way below average and the staff were rude. The best item I had was Uni. The steak was over cooked. The sushi rolls were the worst. Overall, this was a quite disappointing experience.

Yelp
Altho pricey, there is no covering up crappy fish freshness here. The fish and wagyu is fresh and high quality. You want high quality fish every time??? Come here!!!

Yelp
Our new sushi spot in SD!! Take the wife to date night and wanted to try a new spot. Chef and service was top notch. Seating is a bit cramped. Everything we ordered was excellent. SUNTORY DRAFT!!! Tried to purchase some from the waitress to go as it's hard to find. ( only keg draft) maybe I'll try a growler next time. Coming here everytime from now on for our sushi cravings.

Yelp
My family go to spot. Food is so good. I feel like there isn't many authentic Japanese restaurants in San Diego but this place is for sure one of the few. Their salmon ochazuke is my fave! I can have multiple bowls. Their nigiris are on the pricier side but quality is amazing.

Yelp
Couple things....1) don't understand how this place only has 4 stars, should have 5. 2) Don't understand why there was only 5 tables taken, should be completely booked. Incredible. The food here is authentic, true to its cuisine, and amazingly delicious. The flavors, textures, and service are outstanding. Mic drop to the chef and cooks....killer job.
