Shimonoseki Grand Hotel

I’ve stayed at the Shimonoseki Grand Hotel in May 2023 & recently in November 2025. The only reason my family and I stay at this hotel is because my Japanese Aunt lives nearby. This hotel is on a great location and the staff are wonderful although not one staff member speaks any English. The hotel is in serious need of a renovation. The carpet in our room 719 is dirty and needs to be replaced or put down wood or tile flooring. The sink bowl in the bathroom is cracked. The walls or dirty and in some places banged up. I remember from my first experience at this hotel that the rooms smell old. So this time I brought a room freshener. Now the location of the hotel is great. It’s near the water, various stores and restaurants. If I decide to visit my Aunt again I’ll have to stay somewhere else.

We were visiting family in the area; we had booked the hotel a few weeks before our stay. We had struggled to book the hotel initially as a lot of the travel websites such as Expedia came back with an error that the hotel did not accept children. We booked direct with the hotel via their website; although it was in Japanese I was able to book with the help of Google Translate! We were expecting the hotel to be basic but we were hoping that it was going to be at least clean. On arrival we were welcomed and checked in; the reception team spoke limited English but we understood that they get few English speaking visitors. We were surprised when we entered our rooms - the photos online do not do the rooms justice. They were well decorated, comfortable, clean and fresh. We couldn't fault the hotel - we stayed there 5 nights and we slept really well each night. The rooms and the hotel itself were spotless; the staff were really friendly as well. Our rooms looked towards the city but we still had great views; nearby there is plenty to do as well as several restaurants. We had a really nice stay there and highly recommend this hotel.

The hotel is very old fashioned. The room is dated and small.  The staff is not helpful. Honestly, we won’t come back again.

for what I paid for, 6500 a night including parking. there is not much to say. the only thing is the room temperature. it central control, you can only switch off low medium or high, but you cannot control the temperature. it gets quite hot as japan heat is always set at high temperature for some reason. one very good thing check out is at noon, which is super rare in Japan. front desk personal is very friendly and helpful. thank you.

The ocean/sea view from this hotel is MAGNIFICENT & BREATHTAKING! Location is FANTASTIC ... 3 mins walk to karato fish market. I would definitely come back here to stay even tho it is an older hotel & dated. But the rooms are clean & decent. Car park is free. One full day stay is enough as other than the fish market, sadly, the town is quite dead.

My wife reserved this hotel with the ocean view. What a GREAT room it was. The room has 2 beds and was not huge but not too small either. Clean floors, separate toilet and shower which is a BONUS! The linen was clean and the wi-fi worked well. In the evening we had a perfect shot across the ocean at the fireworks going off and in the morning we had a BEAUTIFUL view of the sunrise. We could lay in bed and look out the window. The balcony was nice and clean and the ONLY thing I did not like was that the wall separating your balcony from the neighbors had a gap. So you step out and you can immediately look to your right and see right inside the next room. Otherwise, it was a great room. Be careful if you drive there. The entrance to the parking area can be a bit tricky, so make sure you call ahead to find out how you park there. I will DEFINITELY use this hotel again. Oh and the board walk goes all the way down the Jolly Pasta one way and all the way down to a very popular shrine the other. BTW, there is an ice cream stand in the Kamon Wharf, it has ice cream with caramel on it...GET IT! It is awesome! The food selection there is really good too...you will love this area.

The hotel is located at the harbour and has an easy access to Karato Fish Market, where you can buy and send globefish (Fugu) elsewhere in Japan. The room is simple and a bit tiny. The breakfast is very good. It was a bit difficult to find taxi since the taxi stand is not located directly in front of the hotel, but the hotel staff helps you to do it.

Nicely located on the Ocean and decent rooms and bathroom. Rooms are spacious and offer good comfort for a very good price. Also this hotel has no gym which is too bad. Offers mo espresso at breakfast. Only filter coffee which is pretty old fashioned.
