Yelp
My first impression was, "I've heard it's one of the better Korean restaurants in the Springs..." and "lack of service..."
Whether or not yelp only existed in Colorado, and whether or not I came from California, I'd give Shin Sa Dong a 4 or maybe even a 5) but I grew up in California all my life being around a diverse community including tons of Asians, and Koreans in particular. Meaning, there are many, many, many Korean restaurants to choose from and the competition for food to be up to par is ridiculous. To think of the standards I had in my mind once I came to CO Springs for the Summer, I've changed my mindset and reviewed restaurants purely just in terms of CO Springs. Regardless, I must still bring you the most honest and truthful reviews on food wherever I travel so here it goes.
Here's the pro-light on this restaurant - my family likes to come here often and have tried quite a few things on the menu. They say it's good and clean for a Korean restaurant in the area. When I went with them for the first time I was quite disappointed at my first impression: lack of service. Service seriously makes or breaks someone's appetite, and it wasn't that great here. Note back on what I said earlier, I would've given this place a 4 (OR even a 5) but one star died because of their service.
The second star dies because of this dish:
***Ojingeo Bokkeum (Stir-fried squid and vegetables with spicy sauce): This is one of my favorite Korean dishes and I've tried this at so many places, tried to perfect my mom's recipe at home, and there's two things. The sauce is key. The texture of the squid is also important. Shin Sa Dong's sauce tasted like they added BBQ sauce and it lacked the spicy pepper flavor. The ingredients were right, but the sauce killed it.
***Suluntang (Ox bone soup with beef brisket): The broth was tasty, but a little bit on the oily side, and the presentation was weird. I never saw suluntang with foam or bubbles on top. I was a bit confused, but if anyone has an explanation let me know. Check out my photo, you'll see what I mean. It grossed me out a bit, but it was okay nonetheless.
***Soon Dooboo (Zesty soft tofu soup): Not enough vegetables, and tofu to make it chunky. It was flavorful, but there wasn't enough to bite into just very soupy.
They had a good variety of side dishes which was probably what impressed me the most about this place. I agree with Eric L., if you're going here try the basics like galbi and bulgogi and you should be satisfied. If you're looking for "authentic," you need to learn how to cook it at home because so far, I've yet to find it in CO Springs.
The lasting impresion? "This is a really straightforward and disappointing review, but I'm being completely honest when I say I'm trying to be UNBIAS as possible and NOT compare Korean food here with the restaurants in LA! This review purely would've gotten good reviews (in terms of CO Springs) if they "impressed" me with the food and service. Simple as that."
I'm being so immature here but I just have to: nice try Shin Sa DDONG!
