Dandy Review - Stoke Newington - London - The Infatuation

"I recently cut a mate out of my life. After one too many last-minute cancellations, a disastrous lads’ holiday to Berlin, and an incident involving a box of Pop Tarts, it was time to make a clean break. Of course, nothing my friend ever did was malicious. His intentions were always good. But unfortunately, intentions only get you so far in life. What really matters are results. Even when it comes to dinner. Which brings us to Dandy, a cafe and restaurant in Stoke Newington Green. Dandy is a neighbourhood place that ticks all the trendy restaurant boxes - specialty coffee, natural wine, seasonal food, earnest blokes with beards... it even started out as a shipping container in Hackney, for god’s sake. But despite all that ‘intent’, the end result isn’t much to get excited about. Like a bad friend’s well-worn excuses, the food at Dandy is the kind of ‘globally inspired’ stuff that’s become tediously familiar in London: chargrilled vegetables, peas on toast, pork belly, things with miso, everything with miso. And none of it is particularly good. Most of the things we’ve eaten here come across as though they are meant to impress rather than satisfy, and that’s before you take into account the generally mediocre execution. To make matters worse, the restaurant has a ‘when it’s gone, it’s gone’ policy, which is true for most restaurants we suppose, but Dandy tends to run out of things quickly. And nobody likes setting their heart on one thing from the menu, only to learn that someone at another table is halfway through the last portion. As for the rest of it, Dandy is full of aesthetic intent. The interior feels trendy - like a cafe or canteen with white walls, wood tables, and a handful of plants. We were actually surprised by how casual it feels, given how serious the dinner menu is and how serious the staff seems to take everything. But it is a nice place for a coffee and a pastry, both of which they serve during the day. If you do hit Dandy for dinner, prepare yourself for a lot of earnestness, and probably something with miso in it. But unfortunately, you can’t eat good intentions. And that’s the only thing Dandy seems to never run out of. Food Rundown BBQ Turnip Some words just don’t go together, like ‘moist’ and ‘guava’, or ‘naked’ and ‘confident’. ‘BBQ’ and ‘turnip’ don’t belong in the same sentence together, either. Skip it. Ricotta And Peas On Toast This should have been fresh and tasty, but ended up as a bland heap of ingredients on some perfectly good bread. Here, the salt shaker is your best friend. Pork Belly Salad This salad tastes like it could come from a Thai or Vietnamese restaurant, if you were to remove all of the flavour and douse it in citrus. Lahmacun If you’re going to be making lahmacun (Turkish pizza) down the road from Green Lanes, you’d better get it right. The version here is all kinds of unpleasant - soggy bread and watery cooking liquid seeping from the edges. No thanks." - David Paw

I have been going to Shine for a couple of years, and each time I have an appointment is a very nice treat, and I leave the place happy. Everyone is very experienced but my favourite one is Joanna who does my highlights and cuts my hair. I admire her patience with the highlights and we always have a good chat. Love the products they use and the colour, which always leaves my hair soft and shiny, I always receive compliments. Love the ladies from the reception as well, very friendly and helpful. Thank you! Best hair salon in London by far! Marius is amazing, he always brings the best out of my hair and is great at suggesting the perfect shade and cut for my features (or mood of the day). I trust him 100% and I am always happy with the results!

I went there before and had an amazing experience with this wonderful lady called Jennifer! About a year later I took my daughter there and asked for the same stylist. She was so kind to my daughter, all the staff were! She talked us through how she would do the hairstyle my daughter wanted. The nice lady who washed her hair (I’m not sure of the name) was so kind. The chairs have a nice back massage to offer and the wash is very calming! They are so gentle and they don’t rush, pull your hair or be rough. They blowdried my daughters hair and gave her some beautiful waves with the right tools, tongs and irons! Amazing would recommend! 🤩😁

Very friendly staff and great space. I went for a fringe trim and Cinnamon was lovely. She gave me a lot of tips and really took the time to check with me what I wanted and was very careful to do a good job. I will definitely come again!

Yelp
I have been having my hair cut here for the past year and god am I happy to have found a salon a) I'll go back to and b) not need to take a hat. The staff here are all really professional and knowledgeable and getting my hair cut here is totally non traumatic. Typical London prices, well worth it for the quality of service you get. A very beautiful and immaculate salon. Hooray for consistently decent hair cuts!

Yelp
I love Shine on the Green, came via the recommendation of 2 friends, both with beautiful long hair. Over the last 2 years, I've become more adventurous in my cut and color, and wouldn't trust anyone else except Alessandro, the director. For me its also a place of calm and reset, products are much more on the natural, organic, non-chemical side than most salons. The tiered prices are lower than salons in the center, like soho, and i think the cool and classic beauty factor, or retro style that they master is better. Beautiful and great service.

Yelp
Never ever complained about a hairdresser publicly but this service is unacceptable and I am still in disbelief how a hair-cut can go so wrong. I had shoulder-length wavy hair when I went there and asked to cut off 4 cm with some SUBTLE layers at the back so I can still tie it up comfortably. Not sure how one can one misinterpret this brief so much because my my hair-stylist did the exact OPPOSITE and she cut a massive 15 cms off the back from the top and generously trimmed the sides as well so I am unable to tie it up... I went there with long hair and came back home with short hair that looks like I am trying to grow out. I did not see what she was doing in the back obviously...When I called in the morning to complain I was told the manager will call me back but never did. I am in total disbelief how this can happen in a respected salon. The colour is great but it is shocking to me how one takes the liberty to do such a drastic change on a customer that goes totally against her wishes. I don't recognise myself in the mirror.

Yelp
Visited for the first time last night after a friend recommended it, and was really pleased with the result and the entire experience. I often find getting my hair cut a bit stressful but this was actually a really nice, relaxing experience. Rita cut my hair and was so helpful and friendly, and offered me really good advice and suggestions on styling. Will definitely be going back.
