Where to Eat and Drink When Visiting Gorgeous Astoria, Oregon

"Located south of downtown in the Jeffers Garden district over Old Youngs Bay Bridge, Ship Out Fish & Chips is a successor of the Ship Inn, which served Astoria’s waterfront for more than 40 years. Like Bowpicker Fish & Chips on the other side of town, it’s an Astoria classic. Where Bowpicker exclusively fries up albacore tuna for its baskets, Ship Out serves golden-hued battered halibut, plump shrimp, and crispy calamari alongside fries and slaw. After ordering from the cart, diners should head inside to the dining room, housed in a gravel-lined warehouse space chock full of garden ornaments like ponds, statues, and even metallic creatures." - Alex Frane, Jennifer Burns Bright

15 Fish and Chips Spots Worth Their Salt on the Oregon Coast

"Ship Out is the afterlife of the Ship Inn, a longtime fish hut housed on Astoria’s waterfront from 1974 to 2017. When the latter closed, former employee Enola Baeten took up the fry basket, serving some of the classics from an off-the-beaten-path cart painted with a Lower Columbia waterscape. It’s worth the short drive across the Old Youngs Bay Bridge for serious talent: hand-dipped chunks of halibut, giant prawns, scallops, or a heaping serving of calamari strips. Look for occasional sturgeon specials, and if you can’t decide, choose a combo of all their fried seafood or opt for half-and-half with two choices. All baskets come with creamy slaw and an irresistible mound of fries." - Jennifer Burns Bright

Google
Some of the best halibut fish and chips I've had. The seafood chowder was one of our favorites on our trip to the area. The french fries were great also. The service was fantastic and loved the funky space... Will make it a priority to go to this place again when we are back in the area.

Google
Large halibut, 2 oyster shooters, half order oysters. There is a bit of a wait, but food is fresh. Large pieces of halibut cooked perfectly and tasted fresh. Oyster shooters cold and fresh. Large portions worth what you pay. Breading is crispy and light. Tarter isnt too dilly but is full of flavor. Fries were fresh and crispy. Plenty of seating indoor or covered outdoor. The young guys that work there are all friendly.

Google
Food is delicious We tried halibut, cod, shrimp, and cheese burger and all were good however the fish and chips batter was too greasy. Service is basically not existing as you have to go order from the kitchen and grab your food yourself. The interior doesn't have a restaurant vibe but still was very interesting because of a lot of artworks they have there

Google
I never thought I’d find an equal to my beloved halibut sandwich and cod and chips from Swiftwater Cafe in Whittier, AK but I think I just did. Fantastic work guys👏👏👏

Emily Martinez

Google
Three of the biggest pieces of halibut any restaurant has ever given us. We ordered two orders ($24 each) could have ordered one and shared! One piece was the size of a four piece that I got at a restaurant in Long Beach a few weeks ago. Plus their fries are delicious and homemade sauces were perfect. The dinning area inside had a lot of neat handmade stuff for sale.

Google
This is our absolute go to place for fish and chips. Love the halibut love love the cod and love love love the chips. So far not a thing on the menu has been bad and I think we have tried them all. Cannot recommend enough.

Sarah Moss

Google
Absolutely loved this place. Perfect for any day with outdoor covered seating. The food was fresh with perfect crispy batter. We got the cod and prawns along with a bowl of chowder, it was all to die for. We will be coming in every time we visit or pass through Astoria. Honestly, the food and customer service was worth the trip in itself.

Craig McIndoo

Google
Wendy had the 2-piece halibut fish & chips and I had the the 3-piece prawns & chips. The servings were quite generous and delicious. The setup was sort of hybrid. You order your food at what appears to be a food truck, but that is attached to a greenhouse that provides covered seating along with some outside seating. It's not hoity toity, but the food is quite good and the prices are very reasonable. I recommend it. The only catch was that it took a bit of time for them to take our order.

Yelp
It's a fish and chips day............SO.......we came to SHIP OUT! We come here every time we are in Astoria. It is a favorite go to place since 2017. We enjoyed a Halibut basket, it was hot, fresh, flakey, not fishy and DELICIOUS! Husband had the Oysters basket which were just as good. The French fries are wonderful and the coleslaw just right! What makes extra terrific fried food is the oil and the oil was clean, clear and not greasy, it was PERFECT! Comfortable setting, covered, brought food to the table, paper towels and had lots of condiments!

Yelp
The caesar and cod fish salad. Yummy. It took a little while to get the food, but I had some emails to write and I was standing in the sun. Let's just say it was worth the wait. The ambiance was very nice a bunch of older type knick knacks from the farm and from the beach as well as indoor seating and outdoor seating. For those of you that like poetry.. As I sit and feel Cool ocean breeze Against my skin, I spy in tall dune grass, Something yummy to eat. Helping me to enjoy some time off In a place that I like very much.

Yelp
This is a must stop for us when passing through. The prawns and calamari fish and chips are a must for me and one toddler while the cheeseburger is my husband's go to. The prawns and calamari are amazingly tender and the burger is consistently juicy. The fries are also really good, crispy while not being over cooked. We always grab a bowl of clam chowder to go and it's one of our favorite in OR. Loaded with clams, seasoned well, and just the right consistency of thickness! Our toddler loves the greenhouse used for seating which makes it fun yet functional with decor available to purchase. Service is always friendly and helpful!

Yelp
The shrimp and oysters were battered in such a crisp light batter and were cooked to perfection. The tartar sauce was so tasty and creamy. The oyster shooters were interesting. Unique that they served them with cocktail sauce and lettuce. First time ever that we have experienced lettuce in an oyster shooter. The clam chowder had good dill flavor with lots of clams. It's a little more thin than I like but it was still very good. We really enjoyed the food and how fresh everything tasted. The oil is clean and does not weight down the fish or batter. Love there was plenty of seating and they even have little knick knacks for sale. I bought a dragonfly keepsake. Definitely on our list to stop by anytime we are the area or just passing through.

Yelp
For me, Ship Out left a lot to be desired. It is a pretty cool little food cart with a lot of seating area on the coast. I got the clam chowder and halibut/prawn combo. The clam chowder is very runny. I prefer a thicker soup. The flavor was decent with a lot of stuff to eat in it. The fish and prawns were not my favorite. The fish batter was very thick but also soggy on the bottom. The batter was also pretty bland. The prawns are nice and big but batter lets them down again. Service was not really a thing here. You order at the counter and they bring it to you.

Yelp
Yummmoooo. A great little gem in the midst of no where. Fish was excellent..had the combo and shared...plenty of food

Yelp
What a pleasantly surprised! Don't let the outside of the green house fool you. Inside is nature and artworks mixed together with good food. This fish and chips place gives you more than just fish and chips. Great ambience. Food portion is generous. Calamari are large pieces and soft melted in your mouth. Po'boy with scallops are large pieces of scallops. Comes with crispy fries and that is really good too. We also ordered the chowder. It is not your typical chowder. It has giant prawn, chunks of cod and scallops in it. All of those items are equal or better than most big restaurants. Self service. Plenty of parking available. I would definitely go back again!

Yelp
Don't be put off by the exterior. This is a fabulous restaurant/ food truck. The food truck/ kitchen is at the front and then across the covered wall-way is a lovely big covered area with heaters and lots of seating. We had the haddock fish and chip which was amazing!! And the prawns were great. The chowder was perfection-full of fish and goodness. The service was quick and super polite. I would recommend this place to anyone heading to Astoria.

Yelp
We were on our way to Cannon Beach but stopped here for lunch. It was sooo good. Lots to choose from but when we are at the beach we go for fish. Their fish and chips were really good and we will be going back. The staff was very friendly and allowed us to bring our dog in to an open air dining room. A little out of the way but worth it.
google avatar

Yelp
Off the beaten path and not sure the location was right. From the roadway it looked like the place used to be a garden center with a food truck in front. And this was a snow day and no customers but me (at first). I'm here - let's try it! Came away very satisfied. 2-piece halibut with fries and coleslaw plus a cup of clam chowder. This place rivals my favorite fish and chips place in Portland. Service was good, nothing special. Plenty of seating and, for the cold weather, they have heaters to keep you warm. A will come back for me.

Yelp
A must visit when we're in the area on our Costco run, making our 55 mile trip from Raymond, WA worthwhile.

Ray B.

Yelp
I have been driving by "Ship Out" for months now so decided to give it a try. I wish I kept driving... I ordered the CK sandwich with Cajun fries. Fries tasted very burnt and it's some seasoning, not like any other Cajun fry I've had. I thought that was gonna be the worst part, until I got to the sandwich first bite it completely fell apart. The CK has a very thick batter on it again nothing like I've ever seen before. All you can taste is the batter not the CK. I asked for no butter on the bun there was still butter on it, but when they handed me my food they reassured me that there wasn't... Save yourself the trip & keep driving...

Yelp
Food truck base with greenhouse seating area. Simple setup with about 12 tables. Friendly and prompt service. Just place the order from food truck and they will bring it to your table. Food is fantastic. We will definitely go back again. We have ordered a calamari and scallops po boy and a cup of seafood chowder. Well worth the money spent. The seafood chowder is loaded with lots of seafood and the scallops they used were huge as well as the calamari too. Love it!

Kristi J.

Yelp
The halibut was possibly the best fried fish I've ever had. The batter was so crispy and delicious! The clam chowder had lots of clams and was amazing! The atmosphere was fun and quaint. I highly recommend this as a must stop if you travel to Astoria. It is our new favorite seafood lunch spot!!
google avatar

Yelp
Kicking myself for not finding this little gem earlier! If you like batter fried fish like I do then this is a great place to get it! Several seafood options; halibut, cod, shrimp even calamari. We ordered a halibut basket, a shrimp basket and 3 pieces of calamari, and I had to try their clam chowder. There is a large covered area here to dine in, with TONS of kitsch and local artists items to view or buy. I love that most everything is served in earth-friendly packaging! Even the clam chowder came in all-paper container!!! Thank you, Ship Out, for caring for the earth. The batter fried items perfectly cooked. I am guessing the batter is the same for everything. The fries were yummy and I think used corn starch to give it that extra texture. The clam chowder was on the too salty side, but lots of clams and goodies and not overly thick broth. Lots better than chowders that seem to get favored by tourist rags. I think the saltiness had to be a one-off, so will try again. Prices are in line with comparable spots. Friendly quick service. Everything was clean. Large parking area - you dont have to compete for street parking here! Highly recommend giving this place a try.

Yelp
Cute little spot and the fish n chips were spectacular! We're from way out of town and wanted fish n chips this place did not disappoint!
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Best chowder I think I've ever had. The breading is perfect and fish is phenomenal. Great seasonings, not too thick. So glad we tried this place!
google avatar

JD F.

Yelp
The people make your experience begin long before you even begin eating the great meal! Smiles and great greetings follow! The staff explains how food is prepared and what seasoning is used. Tastes are offered , be sure you try everything offered! Give your order and select a drink and enjoy your day! Food will arrive in a timely manner fresh hot and tasty. Great food at fair prices, you cannot ask for more! Enjoy!
google avatar

Yelp
Good fish and fries. We had the halibut and cod -- both excellent. Their "chips" are better described as "fries," but really good, so I wouldn't hold it against them. I'll be back for more someday.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Finally got to Ship Out last week. It's fried seafood. I had the 'platter' (can't remember what they call it). One piece of each fried piece of seafood (I think it was halibut, cod, oyster, scallop, calamari and shrimp). $26 The shrimp was probably the best piece. The fries had that 'breading or coating' on them. There were a LOT of fries - twice as much as I would have needed. The coleslaw was unimpressive. $3 for a 12 oz can of soda. I doubt I'll drive out there again. But if you like that breading a lot of places put on their fries, you'll love Ship Out - you get a LOT of them.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
Great fish and chips. Easy to find. Not too expensive. Call ahead to order and call back if they don't answer the first time. Waiting outside for your food isn't as much fun as it sounds like when it's raining.

James A.

Yelp
What a great meal. Best clam chowder I've had this trip. Had cod and chips which was excellent. Very dog friendly with an eclectic atmosphere inside and out. Dogs allowed in both areas.

Debby G.

Yelp
Delicious chowder. Different than most we've had. Hot with good amount of clams, potatoes and celery. Halibut was cooked perfectly; hot, crunchy crust and tasty. Cole slaw was good, too.

Dean C.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch yesterday. The halibut and salmon chips. They were wonderful! Very fresh. And the service was fantastic. Our second visit and it was better than the first! Great job!
google avatar

Erika T.

Yelp
This is some of the freshest fish and chips you will get. I come here every time I am in Astoria. My husband loves it too. I have brought both coworkers and providers I work with. I even tell patients about it, incase they don't know about it. It is a cute little food trailer situated on the corner next to an RV park and golf course. It is covered so even on the rainy days you can enjoy some fish. They have a large seating area that looks like a greenhouse/barn, and everything in there is for sale. So if you like a piece of art or decor you can also purchase it. They offer a few different fish but my favorite is the halibut. The batter is beer batter that is not too thick. Sometimes it can get a bit greasy but it is so good when hot bitting into the fluffy batter. The fries are your normal fries, slightly bigger than shoe sting but not as big a streak fries. They are fried to perfection also with a great crunch. If you are afraid of a heart attack from fried food, you might want to make your fish at home. Healthy is not a word on their menu. I always get the combo with the fish, fries and slaw. Not sure why because every time I try their slaw I hope it will be better. I can't put my finger on it but I just don't like it. That is my opinion only. I think it needs more seasoning and less dressing. If you are in town and you want great fresh fish and chips head over to Ship out then on your drive back to town follow the signs and head to Astoria Column for breath taking views.

Yelp
Friendly. Superb service. Fair prices for excellent food. Four piece halibut special served with coleslaw and fries was outstanding and ample to feed two of us. Rustic facility with tons of character. Check it out.
google avatar

Amir M.

Yelp
Spot is pretty hidden and looks like a garden center but it's there, with the "garden center" being the seating area. Staff were pretty quick to attend me and were friendly. I ordered the half calamari fish n chips and the fried halibut sandwich. Both were delicious, however the marinara given for the calamari tasted like nail polish but im guessing it was just a bad batch. The "chips" (fries is right!!), were pretty tasty and crispy and the fried halibut came with a tasty fry sauce for them. The sandwich itself was delicious! Perfect crisp on batter, fish tasted fresh, and the tartar sauce on it was great! If you're in Astoria I highly recommend!

Yelp
The boys and I come to the coast a lot. I have been coming here since the early 70s, when my grandparents had a two room cabin that somehow could sleep 6 (not prettily). I also lived in Maine for 3 years. This is all said to pump up my credentials when I say that I had the best fish here at Ship Out. Yes, it is a food cart. And yes, it is nowhere close to downtown. But here's the thing - it is attached to an old greenhouse, which stays warm. It has an outside bathroom that is the fancy type they have brought to outdoor weddings. And the fish - oh! My youngest came out of the car with me, while the oldest kept sitting there on his dumb phone playing games. We ordered one large halibut fish and chips. Oldest finally came out, so we got another piece of fish (for 6 total) and extra chips. The order didn't take long, and was piping hot when we got it to the table. My oldest hadn't had his phone taken away yet (my bad), but my youngest and me dug right in, and burned our tongues. I began drinking from my water, and I look over and see the youngest trying to take another bite. It was so good that he couldn't just wait a while for it to cool down! I couldn't watch the cycle of eating-burning-eating again, so pulled the basket away for a moment. That's when he turns to me and says, "Those are the best fish and chips I have ever had." We've been to England and Ireland and had some exceptional F&C, but he was right, at least about the fish. The pieces of fish were large enough - not too large, when all you get is fish for half of your bites, not too small, when there are bites that seem to be pure fried skin. The chips weren't great - I hate the seasoned-in-a-bag fries. What about skinnier ones, or at least regular ones without the weird flavors? Still, my son reminded me, they were perfectly cooked - crispy, but not overdone. My oldest finally put the phone down/had his mother snatch it from his hand and sit on it so he couldn't/wouldn't get it back. He ate the fish first, which he never does (he's a fries-first kind of guy, and a bird-like eater at that). When he'd eaten his two pieces, looked up and said, "That's it? I need more!" We went to our camping spot, and were talking to a local who said she liked those, but loved the ones from a place in town. On the way back home, we took her recommendation. The youngest suggested we rate the two places - I gave the in-town one a 7, and Ship out an 8.5. He gave the town one a 7.8, but Ship Out a 9.3. When we come back we will be driving straight to Ship Out!!

Ashton P.

Yelp
Holy cow this place was so good!! We went based on a recommendation from a friend. Fresh fish and a great selection as well! I got the halibut and cod combo. To die for! Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
We love this little gem in a tiny town intersection... this is so far out of the way most travelers on Seaside or Astoria will never know it exists. It is a food cart, next to a large pole barn. The pole barn has the seating area that is filled with artwork of various mediums. Don't get excited, it is not that great of artwork, but it is in the eye of the beholder. The chicken strips and cod baskets were AWESOME. this is truly great tasting food, you really don't get with the chains. It allows you to have food cart food, and not have to eat in your car, or out in the rain.

Shao Teng A.

Yelp
Came for lunch on a chilly Sunday afternoon and what welcomed us are fresh halibut and calamari with fantastic fries. The fish and calamari are so fresh and soft that it melted in your mouth. And the fries are truly well made and not too oily. Though we hoped the price is a little more affordable considering we are paying $40 for 2 half baskets of fish and calamari with fries but we will be back again to try out the other stuff in the menu!
google avatar

Curtis L.

Yelp
The fish was fresh and crispy. They were friendly and helped checked for allergy needs. They have specials that are basically $3 off those specific menu items.
google avatar

Josi C.

Yelp
We ordered fish & chips (weekend special of 4 pieces of halibut & french fries) was amazing. The halibut was very fresh tasty and cook to perfection. The french fries was the best - crispy and seasoned well. Food came out fast.
google avatar

Mary J.

Yelp
This little place is a hidden gem. The seafood is so fresh. I had the cod and my husband the halibut. Both were excellent white pieces of fish. The fries were excellent too. If you enjoy authentic fried fish and chips don't miss this spot. The inside seating area is eclectic and fun. Throw a penny in the wishing well
google avatar

Elaine L.

Yelp
Lakota was so awesome! They were out of clam chowder. We ordered one halibut sandwich and a prawn Caeser salad. Both were absolutely delicious. The batter is perfect...not too greasy and not too thick. Nice and flaky. We loved the halibut so much that we ordered another one. When we picked up our order, Lakota gave us a cup of clam chowder for free complete with 3 spoons since there were 3 of us sharing everything. That was above and beyond! Thanks for making our day, Lakota! We love Ship Out

Pam D.

Yelp
The cod fish and chips was delicious! The batter was crisp and not oily, perfectly crunchy. I'll be back!

B. I.

Yelp
Very good fish restaurant. I wavered between 4 and 5 stars. Their clam chowder is one of the best we've had, and sometimes they even have Manhatten style clam chowder as a special. Their fried fish had a light coating of batter which we liked, and their fries are nicely crispy. We also tried their fish po-boy which was ok but a little to goopy for us, the bun couldn't hold it's shape and became soggy. Hope they keep up the good food!
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
Hands down, they have the best halibut and chips I have ever eaten. Perfectly cooked and so mouth-wateringly good. Ship Out is a food truck with roomy (and charming) enclosed seating. Ship Out is not fancy by any means, but who cares about comfort food like this?
google avatar

Cindee E.

Yelp
Excellent fish on my Cesar salad. It was lightly battered and the fish was super flavorful and firm. Had the burger and fries, too. Fries were so good. Clam chowder was super creamy. Quick service even though they were very busy. The tables outside were in a perfect spot, not too hot, not too cold.

Jamie F.

Yelp
Ordered the halibut and shrimp. SOOOOO greasy. Fingers covered, mouth coated. Gross. Clam chowder was just meh. Giving 2 stars bc employees were very gracious when I brought it back to them.
google avatar

Wayne E.

Yelp
Credit when due. Likewise with criticism. Hours here reflect open until 7. Stood at the window from a bit before 6 when I was acknowledged at a bit after 6. Told then that they closed at 6. No more orders. This on a Saturday evening! Not my idea of a destination any longer. Has been our "go to" fish and chips location. No longer.
google avatar

Kim R.

Yelp
This visit wasn't quite as good as previous lunches. We ordered a cod and halibut basket. One had a bit of a wet layer within the breading (slightly under cooked?) and the other fish plate had way too small of filets inside (but well-cooked breading). The fish all still tasted good, and the fries were great...but just not the best we've had here.

Linda V.

Yelp
Sadly our latest visit to Ship Out was not very good. The slaw was very thick and gooey. Old. The fish and calamari looked great on the outside, golden and crispy, but the inside batter wasn't cooked so mushy. The twice cooked fries good. Sorry but epic fail on this day. Back to our fave, Fish Mongers.
google avatar

Clarence R.

Yelp
Just a little trip up the coast. From Portland to Tillamook to Astoria. We were selective on how we capped off our day trip. So we ended it with Ship Out. There were 4 of us enjoying our dinner. There was a Halibut Sandwich, Halibut fish and chips, a hamburger and of course the legendary Clam Chowder. From the least to the best it was a magnificent meal. The fries were remarkable. I mean come on they're just fries right? Not on your life. These fries were epic. The halibut was fresh, light, flaky and YUMMY! The burger rivaled the best burgers I have had from Los Angeles to Texas, Los Angeles to Nebraska and Los Angeles to Portland. Definitely a great choice. Now on to the Clam Chowder. It was creamy, chunky and smooth. I'm not sure how it got from chunky to smooth, but they did it. There was no grit. That clam was clean. Hints of bacon were a phenomenal touch. Service was excellent. Very friendly, patient and helpful. The ambience was nice. It was under a tent but it didn't feel like it. The decor was location perfect. It was a great way to cap off the day. 45 minutes later and we're still talking about what a great dinner that was.

Steve T.

Yelp
The Halibut sandwich revived me after a long drive from Olympic National Park (after several hikes too). Simple and straight to the point.

Angela A.

Yelp
Food was awesome! Drove from Portland for a day trip on a Sunday. I had the Cod and clam chowder, husband has the halibut! All of it was really good and will be back!
google avatar

Michelle C.

Yelp
I have eaten a lot of fish and chips in different states and this place is by far the BEST!!!! Not oily, perfectly fried and the CRUNCH . Will definitely come back again if I'm in the area.
google avatar

Ron S.

Yelp
We came here just because of the earlier reviews. It may be a bad day for Ship Out but I should've known when I asked the guy taking orders what kind of fish was being used. He was clueless as to what the fish was. When we got our order it was hot and fresh but it wasn't worth the 18 dollars for a 4-piece cod n chips. The fish was sliced so thin there was only 1 side and the batter made up the bulk of the order and was very greasy too. The best thing about this place is the seating it was in a greenhouse it was warm and it kept the wind off us that day! Well, we give them another chance maybe $42 bucks was spent and many other places in this area have better fish n. chips
google avatar

Kim D.

Yelp
TLDR; food is just a hair below "Bowpicker", but there is shelter from the wind and a clean restroom. Better than Mo's by a long shot. A local told us these fish and chips were better than the Bowpicker. They're not. Although they are really tasty, they didn't have tuna fish and chips (the person who recommended told us they did). What they lack in tuna they make up for in ambiance! There is a large covered area with picnic tables for eating. It's decorated with a fountain and lots of eclectic beachy nicknacks for sale. There is a clean restroom!!! We were traveling with kids who would not have done well with tartar sauce in the back of a minivan, so we appreciated the large greenhouse structure for eating and exploring and the fact that there was absolutely no line. After a few minutes they brought us our order to the eating area. Fish was cooked perfectly. Burger was cooked perfectly (just a little pink). We asked for pickles on the burger and they loaded it up! The fries are the battered variety and very crispy. There is a bottle of ketchup and malt vinegar along with paper towels on every table. Two full orders of halibut and chips and a cheese burger ran us $60-ish and fed two adult, two kiddos, and a teenaged boy. Parking is on the opposite side of the order window. There is cute outdoor seating if you don't mind the wind or possibly rain - it IS Oregon after all. The location was a little bit of a bummer since we wanted to stay in the heart of Astoria, but as I mentioned before, the ambiance made it worth the trip.
