The boys and I come to the coast a lot. I have been coming here since the early 70s, when my grandparents had a two room cabin that somehow could sleep 6 (not prettily). I also lived in Maine for 3 years.
This is all said to pump up my credentials when I say that I had the best fish here at Ship Out.
Yes, it is a food cart. And yes, it is nowhere close to downtown. But here's the thing - it is attached to an old greenhouse, which stays warm. It has an outside bathroom that is the fancy type they have brought to outdoor weddings. And the fish - oh!
My youngest came out of the car with me, while the oldest kept sitting there on his dumb phone playing games. We ordered one large halibut fish and chips. Oldest finally came out, so we got another piece of fish (for 6 total) and extra chips.
The order didn't take long, and was piping hot when we got it to the table.
My oldest hadn't had his phone taken away yet (my bad), but my youngest and me dug right in, and burned our tongues. I began drinking from my water, and I look over and see the youngest trying to take another bite. It was so good that he couldn't just wait a while for it to cool down! I couldn't watch the cycle of eating-burning-eating again, so pulled the basket away for a moment. That's when he turns to me and says, "Those are the best fish and chips I have ever had." We've been to England and Ireland and had some exceptional F&C, but he was right, at least about the fish. The pieces of fish were large enough - not too large, when all you get is fish for half of your bites, not too small, when there are bites that seem to be pure fried skin.
The chips weren't great - I hate the seasoned-in-a-bag fries. What about skinnier ones, or at least regular ones without the weird flavors? Still, my son reminded me, they were perfectly cooked - crispy, but not overdone.
My oldest finally put the phone down/had his mother snatch it from his hand and sit on it so he couldn't/wouldn't get it back. He ate the fish first, which he never does (he's a fries-first kind of guy, and a bird-like eater at that). When he'd eaten his two pieces, looked up and said, "That's it? I need more!"
We went to our camping spot, and were talking to a local who said she liked those, but loved the ones from a place in town. On the way back home, we took her recommendation. The youngest suggested we rate the two places - I gave the in-town one a 7, and Ship out an 8.5. He gave the town one a 7.8, but Ship Out a 9.3. When we come back we will be driving straight to Ship Out!!
