9 Houston Area Spots Featured in Netflix’s Hit Show ‘Mo’ | Eater Houston

"In Mo, Rapper Tobe Nwigwe’s character Nick emphasizes that whether it’s a bear claw or a kolache, something sweet from Shipley is a necessary comfort in a time of crisis. He and Mo end up at a location in one of the show’s later episodes, giving the local glazed doughnut chain some much-deserved shine." - Brittany Britto Garley

Google
I was surprised at first when I ordered Shipley's on Uber Eats because the donuts looked a bit smaller than I expected. But when I visited in person they were much bigger and even better. I'm so glad I found this place. The donuts are incredibly fresh, pillowy soft, and perfectly coated with that sweet sugar glaze. The classic glazed is definitely my favorite. So fluffy and just melts in your mouth. The raspberry filled is a close second though. Sweet, tangy, and satisfying. Highly recommend stopping by in person if you can.

Google
Pulled up to drive thru, saw this sign , waited 20 mins, no one came. Honked the horn, went to door, nothing Came back 20 mins later, same thing Maybe the location has shut down, I went to another place instead (and will do so in the future) Here are some pictures of this store and the employee vehicles parked behind it. Employees probably sleeping inside. Extremely weird when you turn a big store into drive thru only but then also the drive thru employees are asleep in the back Shipley's has deteriorated into worse than a gas station store.

Google
Very nice and clean. They have tables to sit and a roomy. We came mid morning and there were still plenty of options. The lady at the register was really nice too! Will definitely come back.

Ryan Jensen

Google
The last word in donut shops. Donuts are larger, softer, and more flavorful than any other I've had, and I have had a LOT of donuts. Flavor diversity is also great, and the kolaches mean that unlike many donut shops it is perfectly reasonable to get a full breakfast here. Prices are cheap and service is fast and friendly. The establishment is clean and pleasant. Donut holes at Shipley's are categorically better than any others I've been able to find - I'd strongly recommend you try some.

Google
Donuts are good & kolaches. the drive thou line is always long at this location have to use it until they unlock the doors. You run the risk of being late for work if you get in a long line at the drive thou window.

Karina Ramirez

Google
Picked up a dozen donuts early Sunday morning at 7:00 am, and the donuts were not fresh or warm. Tasted at least a day old.

Sharon Guzman

Google
So I got what I got cause ....hey I was hungry...but I couldn't walk in...had to go through the drive thru at 2 pm... they didn't have Dr. Pepper and no chocolate milk..but I noticed this is the second Shipley's that didn't offer Dr. Pepper...hmmm

Shaun Gray

Google
Always my go-to when I'm in Houston! Brings back great memories.

Yelp
This is my first time trying these donuts while in Houston. I ordered the apple fritter, blueberry, and cream-filled donuts. I ordered through DoorDash, and I must say that upon receiving these donuts, they were hard and cold. The blueberry and cream-filled donuts looked like the air was let out of them. The apple fritter was big and flavorful but was cold. Maybe I need to try them again when I come back the next time
google avatar

Timmie L.

Yelp
Good customer service...if you're in the long line at drive thou expect a wait but they ate working hard in there the donuts are really good

Lil B.

Yelp
Average donuts at best. But I had them delivered. I'm told when they are fresh they are amazing

Aaron F.

Yelp
Very mid IMO. Nothing special. Just another chin like Dunkin. Maybe I had it built up too much
google avatar

Yelp
SLOW slow slow! One of the slowest drive through ever and then they have concrete barriers that don't let you get out of the line. I was there 15 minutes with 3 cars ahead of me. The Jalapeño Kolache was gross, the whole thing tasted expired and smelled like mildew. Had to write a review because my stomach started to hurt a little after I ate it.
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
I enjoy coming to this location. The staff are friendly and the wait time is minimal. They generally have all the standard Shipley choices I usually get. And don't forget the hot glazed which you can request. Awesome shop. Huge parking lot. Does get busy in mornings at times. They have a drive thru also

Yelp
SO MANY MORE CHOICES AND NOT ALL OFFERED AS IN MCALLEN! KOLACHES sausage, sausage & cheese, ham & cheese, Big Earl Sausage & Cheese and BIG EARL JALAPEÑO SAUSAGE & CHEESE! So many more do-nuts! Houston's Shipley's is much larger and cleaner-but it might just be that it's been renovated.. Love Shipley's! I won't eat any other donuts from competitors. Really!!! In fact, returning to this one while I'm here. : ) Cake do-nuts are in a different case up front, and I'm more than o.k. with that. I had a plain cake do-nut and it was yummy and my tummy thanks me! Hahaha! Actually, I had a plain cake do-nut because I'm heading for my first radiation treatment. It was yummy! They open for customers at 5:00a.m. and close the doors at 2:00p.m. BUT the drive-through stays open until 8:00p.m.

Yelp
Ohhhh my goodness. This was my last stop bright and early before heading to the airport - TOTALLY WORTH IT. I wish I got more donuts to bring home. I was tempted to go back and get more and risk missing my flight. Absolutely Amazing! I've always heard good things about Shipley's and now I see why. I only ordered 3 donuts: a regular glazed, strawberry iced and creme filled. They were all perfect and freshly made. Apparently I made a rookie mistake and should've also ordered a Kolache. That's on my list to try when I'm back in Houston. Only next trip, I'm going to Shipley's as soon as I get in the city!
google avatar

Tunicia W.

Yelp
So I just had to go here because people from Houston SWEAR that Shipley's is better than Krispy Kreme. Well, I'm here to debunk that myth lol. This is the thing. Shipley's and Krispy Kreme are each unique in their own way. It's nothing like a hot Krispy Kreme donut hot off the machine that practically melts in your mouth. Like, absolutely nothing. What I noticed about Shipley's is that the donuts are very fresh, however, the density of the donut is completely different from Krispy Kreme. So its not even an equal comparison. Now, on to the donuts. I tried 3 kinds: Barvarian filled: I got this because I like the barvarian kreme at dunkin donuts. That's exactly what this one is, except it does not have powdered sugar. I could have left it. It was just okay. Maple glazed with nuts : Erm mah gah this donut was awesome! It was the perfect balance of maple, glazed pecan and dough. One ingredient didn't overpower the other, and it was nice and fresh. Definitely something I would get whenever I'm back in Houston. Original glazed: Your regular run of the mill glazed donut, but different in density from a KK glazed. It was good, but its just a donut. I'll have to try the Kolaches on my next trip.

Yelp
Randomly drove through while I was in the area. It was a great experience. The donuts were fresh even in the middle of the day! The best part was the person working the drive through window. He went above and beyond to be super duper nice. During this crazy time I can't tell you how much I appreciate someone being genuinely nice. If you are in the area I 100% recommend for your midday donut fix!

Eve B.

Yelp
Ordered 4 dozen donuts for pickup early next morning. The donuts were ready on time for pick up and all went smoothly. Friendly staff at the S Main location. The donuts were gone in a second at a High School team meeting. Therefore they sadly didn't have time to take a picture. I was glad that I ordered online because I didn't know that it was that busy at 7am!

Kellie M.

Yelp
Donuts are dry and the customer service is terrible!!!! I ordered a glaze donut and a jalapeño kolache. They gave was given a cheese kolache. When I told the attendant she tried to tell me it was jalapeño and refused give me what I ordered. For this place to have so many locations you would think the donuts would be fresh and customer service would be great. Sadly its not!!!!
google avatar

Erica D.

Yelp
This location is great! Really friendly customer service and they have a huge variety. During the holidays they have a really cute decorating kit for the kids for $7.00. I will post pics, but make sure that you visit before 2:30 pm if you want one because they sell out quickly.
google avatar

Melissa V.

Yelp
No matter the location, Shipley Do-Nuts always hits the spot The jalapeño lol aches are my favorite
google avatar

Shaili B.

Yelp
I love the donuts here! The fact that they were open on Christmas eve is a plus. This location has a huge selection and has a big sitting area which is unique. A dozen donuts being around $7 is worth it. There was a huge variety of types of donuts to chose from. We went for glazed, maple iced, strawberry iced, chocolate iced, maple with nuts, and cream filled. Each with their own touch of sweetness.
google avatar

Kris G.

Yelp
These donuts are to die for.....don't tell dunkin donuts that I said that. Since moving to Houston, I've fallen out of the donut circuit because DD is so few and far in between. My colleague mentioned Shipleys one day and I scoffed at her: "you dare bring me, these lowly donuts???" Well boy was I wrong. These donuts are soft and succulent..... Like some good steak.... Yeah, that's what they are...They're the steak of donuts....and this place was the first place that I sampled (and got hooked on) these amazing donuts. This location is the only Shipleys location that I've been to and they are good. Never a line, and they donuts are usually warm and fresh. The interior can do with a little bit of warmth to its decor, but that's totally subjective. I usually use the drive-thru anyway, so it's neither here nor there. Try one and you'll be hooked. I guarantee it!
google avatar

Yelp
These are our favorite donuts in Texas when we're in town. They have a decent variety but I've notice that each shop could have a different variety. Glazed and raspberry are the best. Bought a dozen to take with us back to New Jersey.
google avatar

Abhi R.

Yelp
Great place for donuts, even on Christmas Eve! We got a variety of flavors to get a good feel for this particular donut shop. My favorite donut here is the maple one.

Davy C.

Yelp
Donuts were ok. Maple iced was eh. Donut holes were good. I probably won't go back
google avatar

Korlynn O.

Yelp
I go in the morning on the weekend. If you go early enough everything is fresh. Sometimes there's a line but it's always worth the wait. My favorite is the traditional glazed and my daughter just wants a pink donut. I'm going again this morning and can't wait. Don't judge me lol
google avatar

Elijah B.

Yelp
Has a mom n' pop feel, tasted just like one. Toppings and glaze is simple. Has a lot of different variety. Half dozen about 5.50 and a couple dollars more for 7 something is 1 dozen. The dough at Shipley's is great. Perfect fluffiness, one bite your teeth melt into the donut and breaks off a perfect indentation of your teeth from where you bit off. The variety they have makes it hard to choose. The cherry and strawberry blazed w/ sprinkles were on point.
google avatar

William G.

Yelp
Donuts are great. Definitely better than Dunkin' Donuts. However, the service was lacking. I felt like I was a hassle to the person helping me. Definitely just an order taker and not happy to be there. That being said, there are many donut places in Houston, and I think I will visit other ones before I go back.
google avatar

Olivia H.

Yelp
Shipley's serves decent doughnuts and kolaches at a reasonable price. I honestly do not understand any of the hype about Shipley's, because it just seems like a normal doughnut to me. Also the coffee here come out extremely hot, so by the time it is cool enough to drink, you've probably finished all your doughnuts. I do enjoy their jalapeno cheddar kolaches and cake doughnuts, so I would recommend those if you ever end up here.
google avatar

Briana K.

Yelp
Tried just the glazed donuts and they were delicious! Melt in your mouth, so soft and not doughy at all. They tasted fresh and had the right amount of glaze. Definitely worth a trip!
google avatar

Danise S.

Yelp
They move like snails...really? It's donuts, coffee and kolaches...then they have you locked in the drive thru you cant get out SCREAMING!!!!
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
On my visit to Houston I saw several of these around the city, a chain. I decided to pop in to get a donut in the morning and saw they had a large variety. I got a raspberry jelly filled donut and a plain glazed. The raspberry jelly tasted like children's liquid medicine (terrible) and the plain glazed also had a vaguely medicinal taste that was simply fatty and cloying, not a sweet, light donut like I was expecting. The place was pretty empty, but the service was friendly. Did not even finish eating the donuts (and I am not one to waste donut bites...). The kolaches were very average and very hot. I got a sausage/cheese one, and the sausage was definitely a normal hotdog and the cheese was melty kraft-singles variety.
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
On my recent Shipley's tour around Houston, this was my first stop and the closest location to my house. It's a stand alone building with lots of seating inside. The parking lot is huge and I can get there in less than 5 minutes. All pluses in my book.
google avatar

Krista P.

Yelp
Maybe it's a Texas thing, maybe it's a Houston thing ..... but I don't get it. The donuts were good. They are cheap, and they're served warm. But pretty much exactly what I would expect from a donut - and probably not the best donut I've ever had. And the kolaches? Please don't call a hot dog a sausage. It's offensive. It's a hot dog, covered in melted yellow cheese, in a bread-like wrapping. Pay the $1.29 - but know what you're getting.
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
Great service. They're very fast. In the mornings they get pretty busy so give yourself a few extra minutes to be in line. We love the kolaches, donut holes, and cinnamon twists. And the staff are nice too1
google avatar

Andria H.

Yelp
I always come to this location just about every morning and receive great service. Today was different, one of the employees was slightly rude. Upon walking in she was moping the floor and asked what I would like. She was upset because I asked if she could wash her hands. It's very nasty to try and serve food without washing your hands. And the service was just downhill from there she gave me the wrong item after I repeated my order twice and had a very nasty attitude another employee came from the back to service me.
google avatar

Tuan D.

Yelp
Great tasting donuts! Warm and soft pillows in the morning that put Krispy Kreme to shame...drive thru is slow though...expedite better and I'll change it to 5 stars. No free donut on National Donut Day?
google avatar

Heidi G.

Yelp
Oh my goodness, if you have never had a Shipleys Do-nut (not doughnut) or are in Houston visiting you need to take the time to go there. My hubby and I travel on food crawls and this is the best do-nut hands down. The favorite is the devils food. I am not even sure words can describe this cake like, filled explosion of heaven. Yes they are that good. Also as something different try a kolaches with cheese. This was new to us and pretty interesting and tasty. A MUST DO-NUT in Houston hands down.
google avatar

Eric G.

Yelp
Great donuts! Quantity + quality. Will have to try more donuts next time.
google avatar

Jon H.

Yelp
We tried Shipley's for the first time this morning and were happy with the experience. All the donuts we got were tasty and fresh. Everyone was happy. My only complaint is the complete lack of butter cream donuts. Butter cream donuts are my favorite and I was pretty disappointed to not at least see it on the menu. Oh well though, we will be back.

Rachel B.

Yelp
Ordered a coffee from here and as I'm sipping some of it I found a cockroach, what a great wait to start a morning (:
google avatar

Cali B.

Yelp
Super fresh delicious donuts !!! Great friendly service and yummy kolaches although not the best in Houston still really good!!! Not super expensive and they seemed to always have full stock of their options when I ever I go in.
google avatar

Emily A.

Yelp
Shipley's is amazing. They have the second best doughnuts in Houston, second to River Oaks Doughnuts. They have such a great selection and every color frosting. I love their cherry yeast doughnut with sprinkles. My school has advisory every Thursday and most people drink snacks on that day. Out of everything you could bring, everyone ALWAYS brings Shipley's! It is such a great way to start the day and they are so delicious. My friend brought cherry iced with sprinkles, chocolate iced with sprinkles, and regular glazed. They also have things like fritters, cinnamon rolls, and muffins. They have really good kolaches that I order a lot. The best is sausage and cheese. They are pretty big but they are great. The line for Shipley's is always big in the weekends and they sometimes run out. I recommend going early if you have a bunch to get but it is also great to go in and get a few!
google avatar

Seymour B.

Yelp
They don't have these in Arizona, so when I come back to Texas, this is a must stop. There are many donut shops in Arizona, but they're not Shipley's....light and crispy on outside and soft chewy inside. This particular location I've been going to forever, of course the glazed donut is this best, but they have a cherry filled you can't find at any other donut shop.... Simply the best.

Auris E.

Yelp
20 minutes in a drive thru!!! Unbelievable. I have no idea why theyre so slow and you can't leave the drive thru either because you get trapped in. Absolutely horrible!
google avatar

Diane H.

Yelp
I've lived in every part of the country (Northwest, California, New England, and Midwest), and I have never been able to find better donuts than Shipley Do-nuts. Their warm plain glazed donuts are to die for! I'm also partial to their Devil's Food donuts (chocolate donut with chocolate glze inside), but my parents like the maple-iced and chocolate-iced ones. I haven't ever tried their kolaches before, because I just HAD to have the donuts.
google avatar

Gayle P.

Yelp
God I miss Shipley's Donuts! I live in Oklahoma now and we have nothing. I'm so jealous of my fellow Houstonians who can just drive up the road and get some.. I've been eating Shipley's since I was 4 years old. I'm 52 now and there are no donuts that compare to Shipley's.
google avatar

Erika V.

Yelp
Nothing beats hot fresh donuts!! Shipley's has the best donuts in Texas and kolaches too!!
google avatar

Monisha D.

Yelp
The service here is phenomenal! Really. You'd think ordering donuts in the morning can be such a drag but they are really fast. Like shockingly fast. The service is great too... the lady taking my order was incredibly friendly, energetic, and positive. Definitely made a good start to my morning and the coworkers I was going to take these delicious donuts to. I wish I got her name to give her a bit more recognition but kudos drive thru lady... you're the real MVP.
google avatar

Natasha B.

Yelp
hot fresh! man o man............why did i stop here...... I will need to hit the track, gym,zumba......etc! I'm in Hog Heaven!
google avatar

Diane S.

Yelp
Sweet sugary deliciousness. I devoured the yummy cream filled and cinnamon twists. The twist was so delicious. The coffee was just ok. My hubby had a strawberry filled and loved it.
google avatar

Sydney T.

Yelp
I'm not a die-hard Shipley's fan, but I stopped by for a quick breakfast. I've always been satisfied with the donuts. Tasty, but nothing amazing. However, the kolaches were a lot better than I remembered! There was a very long line when I arrived but it moved incredibly quickly. These employees were very efficient!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Let me begin by stating that I hold Shipley's Donuts very near to my heart as it was THE place to get donuts and share them with friends in highschool. And now that I'm back in Houston after a decade of being abroad, Shipley's can still rock the almighty donut house!!! Honestly though, I've had many a donut in my day, from all over the country and world for that matter, and this place is miles above anything you've ever experienced. I would pay top dollar for this kind of quality, but I don't have to because I just got two hot and fresh glazed doughnuts, a warm cinnamon roll and two chocolate milk half pint cartons for $3.91. omg!

Ashlei B.

Yelp
On Sunday mornings this place is packed. I got here around 11 and there wasn't anywhere to park. Taking the drive thru will be a little bit of a wait but definitely worth it. The lady working at the window is such a sweet woman. The price for donuts really isn't too bad either. The donuts themselves are fairly good. I'm not quite sure what the hype is about because they're not absolutely mouthwatering amazing but they are tasty so I'll of course be back. Warmed them up in the microwave for 7 seconds and they are yummy . I highly recommend:)
google avatar

Elliott B.

Yelp
Clean place, friendly service and fresh, warm donuts.
