Best Halal Restaurants in NYC | Eater NY

"This popular family-friendly Pakistani spot in Fresh Meadows specializes in karahi (a classic Pakistani curry of tomato, ghee, ginger and green chile cooked in a deep pan of the same name). Seven karahi versions include chicken keema (ground), goat, and shrimp. The grill also fires up some tasty kebabs like beef seekh and achari chicken (seasoned with yogurt and spices)." - Caroline Shin

It was a wedding anniversary of Mamom Adnan and Fatima dinner at 11 pm late night by Famous Shirazi karahi New york USA. I visited last week during my visit to USA with my father! Highly recommended to visit that place! It was a summer but clouds make the atmosphere excited! Family reunion and visited with my best friend and Mamon Adnan hussain Mirza’s family! As i spent most of the with him during my stay in USA. It was a great experience to spent some holidays in USA.

We decided to have dinner here with friends, and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff made us feel incredibly welcome — so warm and friendly that it didn’t even feel like our first visit. We ordered our favorite dishes, and though they mentioned it would take around 20 minutes, the food was served even earlier, which was a pleasant surprise. The meal itself? Absolutely outstanding — one of the most flavorful and memorable dinners we’ve ever had. Every bite was a treat, making the whole evening feel special. This dinner wasn’t just a meal; it was an experience we’ll cherish for a long time. Truly a night to remember!

We decided to visit Shirazi Karahi House today, right before a winter snowstorm, and it turned out to be the best decision. The snowy weather called for something warm and hearty, and their goat karahi hit the spot. We arrived just an hour after they opened at 12:00 PM, and for the first time, the restaurant was relatively empty—likely because of the timing. It was a nice change of pace since this spot is usually packed (not a bad thing, but a quieter setting was just what we needed). We started with the Chicken 65, and let me tell you—it was incredible. The chicken was perfectly crispy, juicy, and had the right amount of spice with a jalapeño kick. The portion size was generous, and even with three of us sharing, we couldn’t finish it all at once. For an appetizer, it was beyond satisfying. Next came the Lahori Fish, which had a nice flavor but a bit more coating than I’d prefer. While the batter didn’t take away from the taste entirely, I feel a lighter coating would’ve allowed the fish to shine more. The portion was slightly smaller than expected compared to other places at a similar price. Additionally, we had to request fresh lemon, which they provided promptly, but it would have been nice to have it served initially. That said, the chutney paired well with the fish, making it enjoyable overall. We also tried the Chicken Cheese Kebabs and a Beef Kebab. They were juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. However, the cheese was sprinkled on top rather than integrated into the kebabs, which was a unique presentation compared to other places I’ve been. Nonetheless, they were delicious, and we had no complaints. The highlight of our meal was the Goat Karahi, which we ordered by the pound. It was flavorful, tender, and more than enough for the three of us—probably could’ve served four! The karahi was prepared quickly, and I think we beat the rush because everything came out much faster than usual. Even when it’s busy, the wait is worth it, but this time we were thrilled with how quickly we were served. To end the meal, we enjoyed their hot, freshly brewed chai, which never disappoints. It was the perfect finish to a fantastic lunch. A special shoutout to the servers, who were attentive and quick to address anything we needed. What I really appreciate about Shirazi Karahi House is the personal touch—they go above and beyond. On this visit, the chef came out to check how everything was, and I always value that attention to detail and care. If I had one piece of feedback, it would be that the restaurant could benefit from expanding. The space, while cozy, often gets crowded, which can affect service during peak hours. That said, every visit I’ve had has been enjoyable, whether with family or friends. Overall, Shirazi Karahi House delivered again. The food, service, and atmosphere made it well worth the drive, and it’s a must-visit spot for anyone who loves authentic and flavorful dishes. Highly recommended, especially if you want a warm, satisfying meal during chilly weather!

Wowwww, Absolutely YES 😍 My honorable Desiooo 😍 10/10 The most important thing was the staff is no doubt earning a very positive name for their country I mean Pakistan 🇵🇰. The girls, my brave sisters working there were professional and polite. In the rainy 🌧️ weather of New York , Ladies and Ghareebow , must try “the Goat Malai Karahi”. It made my evening 🫡 No Doubt , Best Karahi in the town. #shirazikarahi #honestreview #bestdesifood #bestpakistanifood

Shirazi Karahi House in Queens, New York is truly a hidden gem when it comes to Pakistani cuisine. We came all the way from Abu dhabi to newyork to explore this gem.The food is not only amazing, but also freshly served, ensuring that each bite is bursting with flavor. Their BBQ dishes are simply mouthwatering, the meat tender and seasoned to perfection. And let's not forget about their karahi - a traditional dish cooked in a wok-like pan with aromatic spices and tender meat. Each bite is a culinary experience that transports you to the streets of Lahore or Karachi. Whether you're craving something spicy or savory, Shirazi Karahi House has got you covered. Plus, the casual atmosphere makes it the perfect spot for a relaxed dining experience with friends or family. Trust me, once you try their food, you'll be hooked!

Yelp
The Famous Shirazi Karahi original branch will be The OG of Shirazi Brand. Shirazi is known for quality and consistent food flavor and always tasting ... We have been going to this branch for many years and never have we ever had any issues with the food quality or quantity. The staff service was always on par with the level of service expected from such place. Upon entering, we were greeted with friendly staff and getting the table within minutes. It was mid of the week so it was not that busy. The quality of the food honestly is same as the original and now it's much easier for the long Island crew to drive towards this location as it's boarder line to long Island I would highly recommend trying out the following: 1. Fish Pokara 2. Goat Karahi 3. Beef Behari ( Mild ) 4. Tawa Chicken Legs 5. Garlic Naan 6. Paratha

Yelp
Shirazi Karahi is absolutely fantastic and a must visit for amazing Pakistani food. At Shirazi Karahi, you must have their karahi of course. Both the chicken and the goat were fantastic but the goat stood out more for me. The naan was also wonderful and it was so fluffy and tasty. I also had their fresh lime soda which was good and not super sweet. Lastly, the meal needs to end with some dessert so we ordered some falooda. It was the best way to end the meal. Do note that it does get busy on Fridays/the weekends. I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Came here one raining night. Parking is street so it's tough to find but patience is a virtue. Once inside the wait can be awhile to get a table luckily for us it was only 15 mins. The staff was present not friendly nor mean. Just there. A lot food was ordered from apps, family kebabs platter, whole fish, naan, curry dish. When asked we were recommended this amount of food for our group of 4. Way too much food. The food was good. Everyone had their own opinion on the food. Some like it, some needed more spice/salt. But the overall agreement was it was good Now the bad part. We had dust particles floating down from the dirty fans and fixture. No one needs this kind of addition to their food. Please get one of the cleaning people to wipe down these fixture. The pictures don't lie. Overall good food but don't sit under the nasty fan or light fixture til it's clean. Cause when the wind blows. You will be getting the wrong kind of pepper on your food and drink. Only 3 stars until they clean the restaurant, if this is neglected in plain sight. Can only imagine the dirtiness in the back.

Yelp
This restaurant is not bad at all. In fact their food is amazing. It's one of the best Pakistani restaurants in this area. The environment and the ambiance of the restaurant is also really nice. But their takeout service is really bad. Especially when they are busy with dine in customers. If you place an order over the phone they'll tell you that your order will be ready in 20-25 minutes but when you go there to pick up the order it's still not ready even if you went there after 40 minutes instead of 25 minutes. Sometimes you even have to wait 30-40 minutes more and keep asking when your order will be ready. If they improve their takeout service it'll be awesome.

Yelp
After 3 weeks in LA and Phoenix, I got back to NY and was braving the westbound pm rush hour traffic on the Long Island Expressway. Did not have to be at work till 8 pm and noticed these two identically named restaurants on my left - on the south side that is. One was Shirazi right next to Oasis Bagels and the other Shirazi Karahi( Karahi as in Wok or Balti in the UK). I got off the exit for Utopia Parkway, popped a U-ie and found parking right in the front of the restaurant around 5 pm. Things were starting good, felt it! Well they got better and better. I got a lovely welcome from Mia and Shahid, the two awesome managers who seated me as I couldn't stop smiling and loving the aroma and the sizzling sound of the beautiful platters that were being served to the family next to me. Couldn't stop staring and politely asked what their great entrees were. They had a beautiful assortment of wings, chicken nuggets, mixed chicken grill and this lovely and yummy tandoori white fish dish. I opted for the salmon fish tikka. Shahid my fantastic host/server/cashier/ manager brought me out this big complimentary salad ( photo) with three dressings( one was a mint sauce, another a white sauce and then a hot one). Terrific trifecta! Loved it! Then the piece de resistance- the sizzling and absolutely delicious and aromatic salmon platter( please see the video) was served with a massive serving of their lovely seasoned brown rice. The fish was so good, it was seasoned perfectly and grilled just right, hot & melt in the mouth goodness. Did not need any sauces with it. I could not finish the rice and took more than half to Manhattan. 3 different wait staff checked up on me. The restaurant filled up by 5:40 pm and I felt the really good energy and the buzz as families and dates were enjoying the lamb chops, chicken skewers, gyro plates, massive salads and the hot samosa apps. The hot tea was hot and delicious. I did not have room for dessert from their very good looking display at the welcome counter. Shirazi Karahi House about 5 doors east of Oasis Bagels was my Oasis on this busy afternoon. Loved it. Open 7 days from 12-10. Parking can be a hassle but then the big reward is the lovely and quality food served with so much love and kindness.

Yelp
Well this one is a hidden gem. Hands down the best Pakistani Indian food in the town. Flavors are on point. Riaz their chef is extremely talented and welcoming. Even their staff is so pleasing. We had Mariam and she went above and beyond to serve us. What we appreciate the most is the way they made us feel so valued. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
Myself and my wife went theme on a Sunday evening. waiting for a table for five minutes nobody approached. although there is three waiters chatting behind the counte. finally I asked them can we get a table. part ii the restaurant is mor or less empTy , they only had two tables. the waiter just left us at the table and never came back. after waiting for fifteen long minutes for someone to take our order I started to ask the waiters passing by. one by one I asked three of them. all of them said I'll be right back but nobody ever came back to take our order. So after wasting half an hour of our life we finally left the restaurant. wondering what did we do wrong? is it offensive to ask them for a table? or is that our skin color? or they are just allergic to politeness.

Jasmin A.

Yelp
i ordered lamb chop ....and i was $35 plus tax. but food was too much salty and taste is very bad..so bad food quality...im no gonna go anymore there...please don't waste your money

Fathima W.

Yelp
The food here is absolutely amazing. I've tried multiple dishes including their karahi dishes. BUT if it's your first time here and you want to order a karahi dish you need to be aware of the time it takes to make it. It's a bit of wait but it's definitely worth it!

Yelp
Unique Experience - Plan Ahead If you like surprises and anticipation, then this is the place for you! This is the perfect spot to eat if you embrace the idea of savoring a 2-3 hour wait. The staff has varying scales of menu "knowledge" and can add an element of surprise to your culinary journey that I promise, you'd never expect. Speaking of journeys, the speedy way orders are expedited from the kitchen to the table in no-less than an hour is definitely something to mention. Also, if you opt for takeout, not only was I the beneficiary of some international wordplay when it came to the items listed on the menu and the regional name for them, I was also ensured the pleasure of a 30-minute estimated wait time for a chicken sandwich (gyro). Even as I reached the restaurant I was once again amazed when they offered me another 15-20 minutes of additional time for the food I've yet to receive. This additional time of added anticipation not only allowed me to take in the ambiance of the restaurant once more, but it also gifted me the pleasure to witness the selective removal of trays left in the display case from the previous nights creations. But don't you worry, they waste not. I assure you, any tray that remained more than 50% full was left there for another day of customers who may be ready to purchase. Arriving home, as I unwrapped my gyro and took that first bite, my taste buds were sent down the path of identifying the flavors within the lukewarm chicken. Was I unknowingly being served food that was prepared in the days prior and left out overnight to marinate in the spices as well? This place doesn't cease to amaze. Wow, just... WOW!!

Fazal A.

Yelp
The worst service I never had from this spot. I was a regular customer mostly I had delivery. I ordered pick up, the app updates that the food is ready but I waited for one hour and asked everybody but no good answer! It is Ramadan I ordered for iftari but no time to cook at home. It is now closing to iftari time but no replies to me though 3 people on the counter. I waited because I had no choice. I was ignored every time I asked. Lastly, I told them to just give me something I could take because ma family was waiting for food. It was 7:30 I picked up the food. They made me crazy! No mercy to such deception! Zero stars

Yelp
Very busy restaurant. Which indicate the test of the food. Kababs are so delicious! Service is excellent! Recommend highly.

Ayesha M.

Yelp
Amazing food!!! The Karahi, kabab, naan, gol guppay, everything was on point! Not to mention the excellent service! Usually at desi restaurants, the service is lacking, but everyone was so efficient here, checking in to see if we needed anything frequently. Will definitely come back!

riaz d.

Yelp
Worse delivery I never thought about it. It took more than two hours and made dasher wait for more than 45 minutes.

Hummna C.

Yelp
i ordered 2 chicken seekh kebab rolls and they gave me only 2 kebab!!!! but wheres my two naans??????????????????????????????????? how cheap and unprofessional!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tariq K.

Yelp
I came across the video on Halal Tourism USA platform about how authentic there Goat Karahi and Lahori Fish are. i went there just for that. I would say it was ON POINT! I loved it, I would highly recommend it :)

Carrol P.

Yelp
Best Karahi In the US. Reminded me of Lahore. Very fresh food, good service. Cheese kababs were excellent. Lamb chops were juicy, Naan were so fresh, chicken wings were so good. They have a variety of different flavor wings, tandoori, malai, hot wings, peri peri wings, Buffalo wings, bbq wings. Prices are very fair. Portions are great. I would highly recommend this place.

Yelp
A friend of mine told me about Shirazi Karahi and recommend that we go. It was right in my backyard of Fresh Meadows so it was a go. First, parking was impossible so we had to park an avenue away. Second, the place was packed so we had to wait approximately 10 minutes, which is not long relative to other places. Third, the menu was extensive. It was filled with delicious grilled food from chicken to shrimp to lamb to the kebabs. Everything we ordered (mixed grill, grilled shrimp, butter chicken, Lahori fish, Till Naan, etc.), all well spiced. The service was great, the ambience was great, and the food was the best of all. The downsides are there is no beer or liquor serves and you cannot get dessert to end the night, you have to get that to go as you leave. But I would definitely go again and I would definitely recommend.

Mariam S.

Yelp
Great food. Absolutely terrible front desk staff and management. Always waiting a long time for food even though the app says ready. The place is frustrating to order takeout from.

Brooklyn B.

Yelp
Their customer service is horrible! The staff need to be trained... After we were done ordering our food and eating the food, we asked for the bill and paid the almost $200 bill. While our party is walking out, one of the workers chased after us as we had left the restaurant and told us we didn't pay for an item on the bill. And we told him we paid for the whole bill and showed him our receipt. He told us to follow him inside and that they forgot to add a $9 item to the bill. It was so embarrassing they would humiliate our whole party for a mistake on their part. This restaurant needs to learn something. We used to be regular customers but this unacceptable behavior.

Aitazaz K.

Yelp
Everytime I come here. The food just gets better and better. Service is great and the food is fresh and tasty. I really recommend their malai Tikka and their beef kabab.

Muhammad A.

Yelp
Very delicious appetizers, karahi was the best I ever had. Clean place, great service, friendly staff. Delicious desserts. Everything was so fresh out of the clay oven. The Shirazi BBQ was amazing, the Shirazi Naan were fresh and delicious. I strongly recommend this place over and over to people I meet. Can't wait to go back. Shirazi family keep it up

Yelp
I am from Middle East and I always order out from this restaurant but I never dine in. I was mostly satisfied with the food I ordered. I decided to celebrate my friend's birthday going to this Restaurant. I was so shamed of the service that I had to apologize to my friends! No straw or cup , just the bottle of water . Rice was cold . We order beef kabab which is supposed to come with rice. Kanab came but rice came 20 minutes later. We were hungry, we had to eat the Kabab without the rice . We ordered dessert. They said you have to take it with you. At the end they charged us for two extra rice. They thought we got rice with our kabab and two rice which they gave us was extra . They over booked and they did not have enough waiters. I guess , as long as people waiting out to get in , they do not care about decent service. The only positive thing I could say , their kabab was delicious! I really do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I was embarrassed in front of my friends! Stop being greedy , don't over book and respect your customers. One day , people stop coming! Workers at this restaurant owe their job to good chefs , otherwise service is terrible!!!!!!

Fahad K.

Yelp
I went here with my wife and 3 little kids I placed the order thinking they would bring appetizers 1st they brought all food together at once like they wanted me to rush it took us maybe 20-25 min to eat I told them I want dessert they tell me they can't give me dessert to eat here I would have to take it to go and eat in the car because they are getting busy like what kind of B.S is that I come spend $150+ dollars and your gonna tell me to take my dessert and eat in my car this was the worst experience I will never come back to this place again
