How One Boundary-Busting Shop Changed LA’s Bagel Scene Forever | Eater LA

"An Orange County mini-chain owned by Carlos Perez’s father since the ’90s, Shirley’s is known for soft, shiny New York–style bagels and served as a reference point Perez deliberately chose not to compete with when developing Boil & Bake’s different, naturally leavened product." - Emily J. Wilson

Google
Tried 4 different bagel sandwiches - pesto florentine - really enjoyed it, like the mushrooms and the flavor of the sandwich - Californian - not sure, but something was missing. Strangely it tasted a little bland and was missing flavor - nova lox - amazing. The bagel was warm and perfectly toasted, the cream cheese against the bagel was cold(usually the cream cheese starts to melt, but perhaps they slightly froze it because it didn’t melt!) and the nova lox was fresh. This might have been one of the best nova lox bagel sandwiches I’ve had. Have to come back for this again. -PB and J for the kids. Solid.

Google
Deeeeeelicious bagels and a lot of options for breakfast sandwiches and bagels. I had the egg white veggie sandwich on a sesame bagel. The veggies were so thinly sliced and fresh and the cream cheese was the bomb! The bagel was soft and chewy. Really friendly staff. My only complaint is the space gets pretty cramped during busy times and it does take quite a while to get your order. But the quality is worth the wait!

Jenifer B.

Google
My goodness this place is crazy busy almost every morning. I ordered bagels for myself and my coworkers online. A whole volleyball team decided to order just before in the wrong line which pushed my ready online order to arrive 15 minutes after its designated pick up time. However, the place is so good their food is super fresh as posted on their signs. “Please be patient as our food is very freshly made” something along those lines. Located on Westminster and 17th in Costa Mesa

Google
We went to get some bagels and cream cheese on a Saturday morning. Normal bagels are reasonably priced but 8 oz of normal cream cheese was a bit expensive. There was a line of about 5 people and we got the order in about 15 mins including wait time. Our order was quite simple though. I would suggest folks to order ahead by phone or online and skip the line. Bagels were okay not as good as those kosher bagels that have more crispy crust, soft and chewy inside without the taste of raw flour.

Google
I must say… that I continue to be impressed. The bagels are so good. They are home made. If you have little ones; they can enjoy watching through the glass partition how they are made. I’ve tried the Lox, the ABC, Pesto Florentine, fresh orange juice, chai, Shirley’s coffee…. Today I ordered on through their website… super convenient.

Google
This store sometimes has queues and now I know why that is. Thank you for this experience, I really enjoyed it! You have a very good bagels 🥯

Ben P.

Google
Bagels were good as was the cream cheese spread.

Caroline W.

Google
Restaurant was crowded with limited seating but food was really good and really well priced. The line was super long but they got through it fast and wait time was shorter than I expected for the number of people there. We got 2 Asiago bagels with veggie cream cheese on one and garlic scallion for the other. The veggie bagel had a fresh taste and the garlic one was wonderfully savory.

Yelp
If you're looking for a place that feels like home the moment you walk in, Shirley Beagles is it! From the first greeting to the last bite, everything about this place says warmth, comfort, and genuine hospitality. The food is always served hot, fresh, and full of flavor -- you can tell they take pride in what they make. Whether you're grabbing a quick bite or sitting down for a relaxed meal, they deliver fast and reliable service every single time. The staff at Shirley Beagles deserves special mention -- they're always friendly, attentive, and truly care about making your visit enjoyable. It's rare these days to find a place where the employees smile, remember your name, and treat you like part of the family. That's exactly the kind of atmosphere they've built here. The menu has so much variety, and every dish feels like a homemade favorite. From hearty breakfast plates to savory lunch specials and mouthwatering desserts, there's always something new to love. It's one of those places where you can come with anyone -- friends, family, coworkers -- and everyone finds something they enjoy. I've been to plenty of restaurants, but Shirley Beagles stands out for all the right reasons: consistency, quality, and heart. The food is amazing, the service is fast, and the people are some of the friendliest you'll ever meet. Whether you're a regular or it's your first visit, you'll leave smiling, full, and already planning your next meal. If you haven't been yet -- go! Shirley Beagles is one of those rare gems where every experience feels like coming home.

Yelp
If you read my reviews, you can see that I am a bagel expert/snob and I have to tell you Shirley's is every bit as good as the greatly heralded Boil and Bake!! On my way to John Wayne, went by Boil and Bake and completely packed! Went down to Shirley's on 17th and it was packed too! See photos They have two lines, one for pick up for phone and internet orders and the other so we will line is obviously for in-store orders.... Line went surprisingly quickly and got my food surprisingly quickly too! I love how you can see where they boil and bake the bagels right in front of you !! see photo. These are authentic New York style bagels. The boiling gives it the thick and chewy skin that locks in some moisture to keep everything tender inside. Pleasantly surprised that they had pumpernickel so I had one of those double toasted with butter and everything double toasted with butter. The everything had the toppings on the bottom too so full everything bagel experience, whether or not you eat the top or the bottom, this is the right way to do it. Super crusty chewy and full of flavor, literally a perfect bagel! Bagels do not get any better than this, they may be different, but not better. Extra bonus, the unsweetened iced tea was passionfruit? It was excellent.!! I can't recommend a bagel place more highly than I do Shirley's... Next time the cheese or pizza bagel.....

Yelp
Great bagel spot! Plenty of small outdoor tables as well and tables inside. Order at a counter and your name is called out to get your order. Bagels were fantastic- lots of great flavors and everything was fresh, including toppings.
google avatar

Amy N.

Yelp
Busy place! Sesame bagel with cream cheese was good. The others in my party liked their food also. The inside is clean just not a lot of inside seating and outside not a lot of seating either unless you are a small party. Here vacationing so gave this place a try and it was good.

Yelp
I have been going to Shirley's Bagels for a while now. Always delicious. Service is always with a smile.

Yelp
I don't always go to Shirley's but when I do, I usually get the Turkey Avocado. Apparently everyone had the same idea on the 4th of July, so when I arrived there was a long line, but it was hard to tell that it was actually 2 lines - one to order at the counter and one for phone/online pickup. I ended up ordering online because the in person line was pretty long. Once I ordered, it was still a 25-30 min wait so I ran over to Starbucks to get coffee. It's pretty packed inside and the workers don't use a microphone so you really have to be listening for your name which was kind of annoying and it's very cramped inside because it's packed. The sandwich itself was very delicious and filling. Just make sure you have a lot of time to hang out and wait if you visit Shirley's on the weekend or a holiday.
google avatar

Jesse A.

Yelp
Came over here before my hike and wasn't disappointed. Even though it was pretty packed the wait wasn't that long. The bagels are always made fresh and you can see them make them. The wait wasn't that long. I'll definitely come back again
google avatar

Joelle L.

Yelp
I really love Shirley's Bagels. They offer a great deal on a dozen, which I usually pick up for special occasions or gatherings. I've tried every flavor and honestly, there isn't a single one I didn't enjoy. Even after freezing them and toasting them later, the bagels still hold up in both flavor and texture. Shirley's consistently does an amazing job, and I truly appreciate the quality they bring every time.

Mimi W.

Yelp
It was so nice to see how well staffed and efficient this place was. I had the Club Bagel and it was delicious. My husband had the PBB which he thought was also very good.
google avatar

Danielle H.

Yelp
Lots of parking, I got here around 9am and there was no line to order. The workers didn't seem super friendly, but they still were patient with me as I decided what to get. I ordered a cinnamon bagel with strawberry cream cheese. There are a good amount of seats in the establishment, lots of tables for two and some booth seatings. I got my bagel within about 6 minutes or so, and I was pleased to see how packed it was with cream cheese; it made me feel like I was in NY lol! The bagel was warm and made the cream cheese melty, it was delicious. Wonderful bagel for a great price, I will be back.
google avatar

Lauren D.

Yelp
This was just an average bagel shop. My daughter wanted to get a bagel for lunch so I said okay, and we found this place. She asked for a sesame seed bagel, and she declined any cream cheese. I ordered the chicken pesto panini. They were pretty busy since we came right at lunchtime on a Saturday, so it took around 10 minutes or so for my panini to be ready. The panini was fine, nothing special but good enough to finish the whole thing.
google avatar

Rudiger S.

Yelp
The bagels or second only to what we've eaten in Montreal. The selection is big and the variety of schmear is just as big. If it's a bagel breakfast or lunch sandwich you'll find it here. I'm here at least once or twice a week. The service is always friendly. There are a few tables but most people order and take out.
google avatar

Orian R.

Yelp
This place used to be sooooo...... much better. I asked for my bagel to be toasted brown or extra toasted as I go here from time to time and I'm familiar with them not understanding what toasted means. Sooooo..... disappointing when you're looking forward to enjoying a tasty bagel in the morning. EIPIC FAILURE!! Don't get me wrong I still enjoy this place if I have access to a toaster.
google avatar

Mireille K.

Yelp
I ordered food to go and they forgot to put my egg sandwich in the bag . I only realized when I got home. Not very happy right now.
google avatar

Tiffany N.

Yelp
I like to come here when I run out of time to hit the grocery store and make it myself. They are really generous with the cream cheese when it comes to the bagels which is a plus because you're paying around $5 for one bagel. Remember to ask for cream cheese with your bagel or else they'll just give you a plain bagel. I've also ordered their salads and it's not bad at all. Very nice mix of different greens. Parking can be a hassle because the plaza is small with lots of businesses. Free complimentary water inside. Definitely recommend to come here with friends as a casual spot, or come alone for a quick to-go order.

Yelp
Most times when I wake up on a Saturday morning craving something savoury for breakfast, I think of Shirley's. My go-to order is always the Californian -- toasted Everything bagel, chipotle aioli, scrambled egg, avocado, red onion, and a chicken patty! It comes with tomato, but I'm not a tomato kinda gal. You have the choice of choosing the meat you'd like: bacon, ham, or chicken. My favorite bagel sandwich combination! Shirley's Bagels has other bagel sandwiches to choose from like nova lox (the classic salmon, capers, cream cheese, etc.), ABC (avocado, bacon, cheese), and many more yummy combinations to satisfy any breakfast craving from savoury to sweet. They also serve parfaits, overnight oats, lattes, coffee, orange juice -- you name it! The breakfast girly that I am loves it all, and you will too. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Deb H.

Yelp
This location on 17th St is always packed but the bagels taste great here so it's worth it! I love how they have hard to find flavors like sour dough and pumpkin. Be careful though sometimes they overcook the bagels and then overcoats them so they taste a bit burnt so if this bothers you (like it does me) then ask for them lightly toasted. I like how they have salt bagels (those are the most moist/soft) and I often get those or the everything bagels toasted with cream cheese although they have yummy sandwiches too. I also like their wide variety of beverages and other non-bagel items. Even though there is normally a long wait most of the people get their items to go so there has always been room at the plentiful number of tables inside to sit at when I've gone here. I prefer the softness of Noah's bagels but when I'm in this Costa Mesa area then Shirley's Bagels is the best around.
google avatar

Vivian C.

Yelp
I absolutely love Shirley's - it's easily one of my favorite bagel spots. Today, I tried the Californian on a blueberry bagel, and it was delicious. My only wish is that the bagels were a bit softer; I've noticed that each time I visit, the texture makes it a little tough to bite through, which leaves my jaw sore. Aside from that, it's always a fantastic way to kick off the day!
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
Busy on Sunday morning, the line to order wasn't too bad, but waiting for your food takes a while. I felt it was worth it. I got the cinnamon roll because it looked fresh and fluffy. I warmed it up for 30 seconds at home, and it tasted homemade. It's big too. (5/5) The pineapple coconut muffin is absolute deliciousness, transport you to the islands kind of feel and whoa reaction on first bite. Yes, again and again, yes! Moist, fluffy muffin with pineapple pieces inside, crispy top with coconut encrusted edges. Swoon. (6/5) Onion bagel toasted with cream cheese felt like the bagel was hugging me and telling me everything carb-y would be okay and not to worry. It was comfortingly good. (5/5). I get why people stand in line and are willing to wait. Ambiance is meh. I wouldn't choose to sit and eat here with a friend or two. It's too stressful with the hustle and bustle. Outdoor seating is not pleasant as it's by the parking lot. Online ordering is highly recommended if you don't want to wait. You enter through one door and exit through the other door.
google avatar

Leesa B.

Yelp
Efficient and friendly service. Mobile ordered, so that helps! Ordered 2 breakfast sandwiches and 3 open faced sandwiches. All were family approved. All were toasted with a nice crunch. The faves were the Pesto which had a lot of flavor and the Lox and Cheese. The open faced ones came with a little container of lemon pepper sprinks - took the flavor to another level, very enjoyable. Our favorite bagel place is Bagelmania in Las Vegas. Shirley's fulfills our breakfast bagel needs just fine. Will definitely come back!
google avatar

Korous G.

Yelp
Best bagel I have tried fresh and tasty My favorite is sesame bagel I highly recommend this place for breakfast or brunch
google avatar

Derek A.

Yelp
DONE with this place. Been coming here most of my life. Unfortunately, it has dropped way off from its heyday. Takes 30-45 minutes (on their best day) to get a bagel made. It's an absolute joke. Once would be a fluke. This is the standard here now. It's pathetically slow. If you're ok with lackluster service for basic, mid bagels, that are not worth the wait, this is your spot.
google avatar

Danielle B.

Yelp
Shirley's Bagels is hands down my absolute favorite bagel shop! I've been coming here for a while now, and they never disappoint. I always get the jalapeño cheese bagel, and they are not shy with the cheese or the jalapeños--it's perfect every time. I always order ahead because there's always a line out the door, which just shows how popular this place is. With so many bagel and sandwich options, there's something for everyone. Highly recommend!

Jae B.

Yelp
Great bagels! So delicious and wonderful customer service and clean environment! Will come back

Green L.

Yelp
I ordered a lox bagel and the tomato's were green!!!! Not ripe at all. They shouldn't have let this go out. On top of this I asked to speak to the manager when I called. The employee said she was busy in the back and couldn't come to the phone. Terrible customer service. Then they hung up on me.
google avatar

Sarah J.

Yelp
Here's the thing...Shirley's doesn't need anyone else to sing its praises. It's THE neighborhood spot for bagels etc. and it's always busy for a reason. Been coming here for as long as I've lived in Eastside CM. I'm just dropping a compliment here for their cinnamon roll. My test of a good cinnamon roll is that it tastes good cold (and even better heated up). Quite often, rolls are dry and you have to hit them with heat to make them edible. Shirley's are moist and decadent!
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
Great bagels, but the noise level will almost cause your ears to bleed. They play the music so so loud that it's impossible to carry on a conversation so everybody around you yells and screams.
google avatar

Ellice W.

Yelp
Got a take out Pumpernickel with lox cream cheese and wow! Great chewy bagel and very tasty but slightly light cream cheese. 10/10 brings me back to New York but not for New York prices
google avatar

Emilio L.

Yelp
When I went in today, I ordered a simple cinnamon roll and a bagel with cream cheese and avocado and I waited 10 minutes and I went up and asked how much longer for the cinnamon roll and the bagel and they asked me for my receipt so I went back to my table grab my receipt and gave it to the lady and she walked away and then I didn't hear back for another two minutes so I came back to the register and the person who took my order, asked me what I needed, and I asked them how much longer for my cinnamon roll and they asked me what my order was and I was in disbelief that she didn't remember this had to be my worst experience ever!

Whoops G.

Yelp
Great bagels, loved the ratio of cream cheese to bagel, the service was great too! Allan was very friendly and helpful with all my questions. Definitely worth trying!! Plenty of seating inside too.
google avatar

Phia S.

Yelp
As an east coast girl, finding a bagel on the west coast is harder than it sounds. Shirley's Bagels has some raving reviews and is in my neighborhood, so I was so excited to check it out. I came before work on a Monday at around 7:45 AM and there was already a line five persons deep! I asked the cashier about it and she said they typically get really busy and you have to come early or they will run out of certain flavors. My expectations now have never been higher! The services was surprisingly fast given the line and the amount of to go orders I saw them bagging up. I waited probably only 10 minutes for my bagel. I ordered an everything bagel with cream cheese. The bagel was phenomenal!! Crunchy on the outside and soft, gooey goodness on the inside. I will definitely be a repeat customer. So happy to find them!
google avatar

Daniel O.

Yelp
If you're looking for a breakfast sandwich that actually delivers on bold flavor, the Santa Fe Bagel with a jalapeño bagel base is an absolute winner. The jalapeño bagel brings just the right level of heat--enough to wake up your taste buds, but not overpowering. Paired with perfectly seasoned sausage, a fluffy egg, and creamy melted Jack cheese, every bite is a savory. The textures are on point too: a slight crunch from the toasted bagel, the richness of the sausage, the softness of the egg, and the smooth melt of the cheese all come together beautifully. It's the kind of breakfast that leaves you full, happy, and already thinking about when you can get it again. This sandwich isn't just good--it's crave-worthy. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Had this review saved in my drafts so it's about a year overdue (1/6/23) Ordered the Santa Fe on jalapeño and a cinnamon bagel with almond butter (both lightly toasted) online and had to wait about 10 minutes longer than the pick up time provided. Opened the Santa Fe in the car because I'm a passenger princess and took a couple of bites and it BROKE my permanent retainer. Popped the wire out of two brackets. Had the retainer in for over a decade and Shirley's destroyed it. Bagels weren't even good enough to be worth a trip to the ortho. Dry and bland just like the service

Michelle C.

Yelp
I am so sick of this location constantly forgetting ingredients when I order something. If you're going to have protein bowls and ask for which protein, why can't you guys remember to add it? I want to support this business but tired of wasting my money.
google avatar

Jonathan S.

Yelp
Problem is everything takes so long. Ordering online takes 40 minutes. We're talking about bagels not gourmet. The food isn't worth the wait. Breuggers is similar and they don't have a 40+ minute wait on top of the fact that nothing ever comes early. I keep hoping it will improve and it never ever does so won't be back. It's just bagels.
google avatar

Robert F.

Yelp
Best bagels ever!! Growing up in Connecticut, I've always had a deep love for all things bagels. When I came to California in the early 80's I was told by my father, there's no good bread, pizza or apizza as we call it and there's no good bagels out here as well. Flash forward to today, I had the best bagels ever here today at Shirley's Bagels in Costa Mesa. I had the Nova Lox on an everything bagel and my wife had the egg, cheddar with bacon on a cranberry bagel. We also split a pineapple coconut muffin. Everything was fresh and super yummy!! The bagels are on another level for sure. They make their bagels fresh daily!! The smells of freshly made bagels is something I noticed the minute I walked in. Super friendly staff and a clean well lit dining room to enjoy your food. This is my new go to for bagels!! There is great bagels in California and you'll find them at Shirley's Bagels!! Sean was awesome and gave us great customer service, we'll definitely be back!!
google avatar

Mecca B.

Yelp
Wow. What's. Neighborhood favorite. Eat inside or outside - they have seats available! On the weekends, I make sure to order ahead because the line is super long. People are standing around waiting for tables to clear too. Be prepared to wait since this is a local favorite. Bagels are super soft and yummy! Ambiance is fast paced since it's a busy area. Also, parking lot is adjacent to the doors so becareful driving through.
google avatar

Keeley F.

Yelp
This place always has fresh bagels. Lots of breakfast and lunch sandwich options to choose from. On the weekends, go early as the line can get pretty long!
google avatar

Janet P.

Yelp
Nice bagel place, but boy do they get busy! Called in an order, they said 20 minutes and we had to wait another 30! Very tasty stuff, though. Note that the online ordering doesn't seem to have as wide a menu as they have in the shop. I had the avocado with cream cheese and bacon on everything. Really good. Everyone was happy with their choice, but hungry! You get to watch the bagel guys crank it out in the kitchen while you wait. (OK, let's see if "Joe T." gives me another "Oh no".
google avatar

Erlyne S.

Yelp
Went here on a sunday noon and there was no line. I got the ABC (avocado, bacon, cream cheese) which was an open faced bagel. I forgot the name of my bagel but it had poppy and garlic, and it was delicious. The bacon are nice and thick and the avocado ripe and creamy. My boyfriend got the lox on garlic scallion cream cheese. I also highly recommend this one. The cream cheese specially!!! The cafe latte was also surprisingly good. Overall great place for bagels and breakfast.
google avatar

Bee M.

Yelp
I enjoy bagels a lot, most bagel apps fall short when it comes to the butter lovers. Pile on the cream cheese, barely scrape on the butter. Ask for more butter and you have a expensive bagel which isn't the problem I'll pay for a good bagel! But I do like it with at least the same amount of butter that you put in cream cheese, I get it is unhealthy but this is my sinful pleasure of unhealthy choices when I decide to enjoy them. Good bagels, good service, under par for cook preparation and awareness. The prep line should be better aware

Steven A.

Yelp
It's just all yummy and have been coming here for 25 yrs plus ....... Bagels are fresh daily and pre order as it get busy Thanks Shirley's
google avatar

Maribel M.

Yelp
Came in on Friday 945am not a prime time. Ordered one bagel. And it took 22 minutes!! Lazy workers there's like 8. No reason why bagels should take more than 5 minutes. Also, the bagel isn't even truly toasted it's like hardly warm. No excuse for this. Not sure why people still go here. Ridiculous.

Brittany N.

Yelp
Pretty disappointed with the service this morning. Placed an order online an hour ahead of my selected pickup time. When we got there, first they couldn't find the order. I provided my confirmation. Then we had to wait since it hadn't even been started. 20 minutes later, we got everything but with no apology, no reason as to how they dropped the ball. With as many people working there, you'd think it would run smoother. Not real sure why they offer online ordering.. the delay made me late to work and my son late for school.
google avatar

Bill C.

Yelp
Love Shirleys for really good bagels and bagel breakfast sandwiches...high quality and efficient...and great service with a smile!!! Been going here for a decade!!
google avatar

Christine C.

Yelp
Shirley's bagels was our go-to for breakfast sandwiches on the go. They had decently good bagels especially the jalapeño cheese and the blueberry which were our favorites. Pricing was pretty reasonable as well. However, most recently, we noticed that the pricing has gone up while the bagel quality has gone down and possibly the size of the bagels are smaller. It's disappointing because we thought they were the best local bagel shop, but now we're considering finding a new bagel spot as our go-to. The service is so-so as the workers (especially the ones that take the orders) seem indifferent and not really giving much effort to providing good customer service. The set up is such that you enter in through the front and order at the cashier and then pick up your order and exit through the side door. There are tables and chairs in the central area for you to eat your food as well. Parking is decent if the lot is not crowded. It's in a small outdoor plaza with a popular donut and ice cream shop nearby. We used to make bagel runs on busy weekends and still found parking. However, it's sad because Shirley's bagels has been a staple in the area and although the sandwiches and bagels are still decently good, it's not the same as it was even less than a year ago.
google avatar

Kate B.

Yelp
Such a great establishment with consistently yummy bagels and all selections always open. You save a lot of time with the ordering online option. I always get a toasted, everything bagel with non-fat cream cheese. Maybe next time, I will venture elsewhere on the menu. A great and family favorite spot that we will keep coming back to! Also a plus that Starbucks is right next door for the coffee fix.
google avatar

Chela C.

Yelp
This is my go to bagel location. The lox cream cheese is amazing. One the weekends there will be a line but it is worth it.

Maureen H.

Yelp
Do not go here unless you have an Hour to wait for your order they do all the online orders first going in person is ridiculous. Wait. Took 40 minutes to get three bagels
