"After nearly two decades of running a traditional restaurant, this family decided to survive by opening a counter-service lunch spot that is also the county’s only Asian market. Try all the classic ramen flavors, as well as some vegan options like tantan or kimchi. If ramen isn’t for you, there are other options like sushi and poke. Consider treating yourself to some mochi from the freezer or grabbing a package of “x2 Spicy Buldak” ramen from the market shelves for later." - Emma Van Slyck, Stephanie Gravalese

This is such an amazing market! They have so many great foods in the freezer section like rice cakes and tteokbokki kits! They also have really fun ice creams as well. The owner is very sweet and very helpful! I highly recommend coming here! They also have the TikTok buldak ramen and so many incredible snacks. The drink selection is also great. The restaurant itself also looks incredible and I can’t wait to try it next time I go. Ps they also sell some cookware like dumpling steamers and cooking chop stick they also have a wide variety of spices.

Google
Our first time trying this place. We liked the food but the portions were a bit smaller than we were anticipating. The flavor was great!

Peter Tiso

Google
The newly-reopened restaurant and Asian market is awesome! They have a great selection of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean products and are excited to help you figure out how to use them. The cafe offers great, fresh, and diverse food as well. Overall a great place to shop and eat.

Google
This was a really interesting place to come visit. They had some fun things for sale in the back room. The staff here were very friendly and professional. Parking was plentiful and easily accessable with the lot right outside. I am looking forward to going back again soon!

Sarah Moritz

Google
The only asian market for milessss but they carry all the essentials! They carry my all time favorite Kani Chips that the bigger Asian Markets in Albany don’t carry which is a MASSIVE A++ in my books

Odette Prakks

Google
Nice little Asian grocery store. But the price is ridiculously expensive. We bought 6 items which 4 of them are $2.99 or less and the other 2 we’re about $8 each, we were charged for $38! We gave 1 star for a good customer service.

Google
Great food, friendly owner, and the hot food came out quick. It's a lovely place. Wide selection in the market area too for the location. I would highly recommend

Google
We got two yummy miso soups and some groceries. Friendly service and timely pick up. Good to have a place like this in town.

Yelp
When we first moved here two years ago we didn't know anything about Shiro. It was when we were coming out of the pandemic and, like most restaurants, they were trying to find ways to exist. Initially, there was a sign outside that side they repaired computers and cell phones. Our son and daughter came to try out the food and they raved about the Ramen. Since then we have been back regularly, especially when the weather calls for a warm meal, and have introduced many friends and relatives who were equally thrilled with the find. The menu is limited but two of the options are vegan and everything is cooked to order. The broth in the vegan tonkatsu is aromatic and flavorful. The pork tonkatsu is a big hit with the non vegan crowd. They also have a wonderful Asian market with sesame oil and lots of hard to find spices and ingredients. And mochi!

Yelp
Best ramen I've had in a long time. Not sure how there are any negative ratings. They know what they're doing in this market.

John J.

Yelp
So we normally come here when we are around the area. The last time was about a year ago. Sadly to say the food has gone down much in quality and taste. The gyoza was kinda hard and did not taste very fresh. I mean it is definitely frozen packaged ones. Honestly I know that everything as just store bought and made. The portions were not very large. Orders this chicken curry bento and it had about two little chunks of chicken and a lot of onions and some sauce. This was self serve kinda place, but if you needed an extra bowl or anything it was very hard to get. Place is older and tables are never cleaned. I had two wipes with me and had to just wipe down the table and it was honestly pretty gross. Sad to say that you are better off going to a super market and buy a ramen pack and cook it at home. Would probably taste better.

Yelp
We are gifted in GB to have Northern China cuisine that exceeds the palate tastes of the locals. They have no idea how lucky they are to have chefs like WeiWei and Harry Yu. A lovely family business helped by 2 charming and polite sons.

Tomonori T.

Yelp
One of the Worst ramen bowls I have ever had. Also prices are higher. Service was okay

C B.

Yelp
Fresh and delicious ramen! My daughter had the Tonkotsu ramen and I had the Wanton ramen and both were delicious!! The market is quite a gem as well!

K. C.

Yelp
This is a cafeteria-style eatery. Order at the register and pay, find a seat and when the food is ready, your name is called. This is clearly a no-frills place. We had the ramen, gyoza and teriyaki chicken. They were all generally very good. The portions are normal, no super-sized diner sizes. There is nothing special about this place but the food hits the spot. Think of it as food that you can make at home. A portion of this place is a market with a number of Asian food items that may be purchased. This looks to be a family run business and they are very nice.

Kathy E.

Yelp
Came for lunch sue to other good reviews. Maybe it's just their COVID adjustments but the ramen was terrible. Even thou mask rules are lifted here you only get it packaged for takeout. My shoyu ramen had lots of noodles, about 3 carrot slices, an egg that looked like was dropped into the broth and completely cooked hard (no ramen egg, my favorite part of ramen) and a few grizzled slices of something that were mostly fat. Borderline inedible. Yuck. Maybe when they have more customers they will pay More attention to quality of their product??? No one who is remotely Japanese would consider what we ate good.

Bob D.

Yelp
Great little market that has stuff you won't find anywhere else. Prices are good and very friendly staff. I hope to keep coming back.

Molly K.

Yelp
Loved it! Delicious pho and they have a great selection at the grocery. I'll definitely be back

Josie C.

Yelp
Omg you have to go to Shiro when visiting Great Barrington! The lady that took care of us & cooked our food was super sweet, friendly and an excellent cook! I ordered the Pho & it was so delicious. They also have a super cool grocery store inside with mochi, ramen and so much more!

Michelle A.

Yelp
How refreshing to find a family run business in the middle of town off busy Rte 7. The food is freshly made for take out and there are socially distanced tables inside for those who are comfy with sitting. The grocery store offers taste treats for those seeking something with an Asian flair. Very charming young man at the cash register makes the experience memorable.

Larry R.

Yelp
Delicious gyoza platter and fantastic pho, the broth was so flavorful and comforting on a chilly autumn day!

Brian T.

Yelp
I've only eaten here occasionally but I'm here to comment on the store. They have everything I need to make Chinese, Korean, and Japanese meals. There's a very good selection of hard to find sauces, noodles, tofu, kimchi, dumplings, etc. Plus it's a great family- run business!

Rick B.

Yelp
It's important to note that Shiro has an entirely new format so you should disregard any reviews before 2019. Instead of a fair Japanese restaurant, Shiro is now half Asian grocery and half excellent Asian street food (not specifically Japanese) eatery. My wife and I have eaten there twice now and have been wowed by everything we've tried and it's all been vegetarian though they have meat. The kimchee noodles were the best I've tasted primarily because of an outstanding broth. My wife was equally impressed with her vegetarian noodle soup which she liked so much she got it again the next time we went. That time I tried a noodle dish I've already forgotten the name of (Shanghai noodles?, Beijing noodles?, just some Asian city noodles) and it was also spot on with lots of very fresh vegetables and vibrant flavor We can also stock up on Asian groceries instead of driving to Albany or Springfield. And the owner could hardly be nicer or more helpful. Whoa, do they deserve a try!

Fernanda F.

Yelp
Always a favorite when we come to town. Their food is good, the staff is always friendly and I love the attached Asian grocery store!

Barbara M.

Yelp
This is not good food. Not by any stretch of the imagination. It is not even good in a greasy-take-out-kind of way. I absolutely hate to waste food, and was devastated to have to throw my food away after a few bites, but I did it for my own safety. I am still gagging.

Robert W.

Yelp
Service was slow but the food was freshly prepared. Portions were small but it was tasty. We liked the ramen

Alyx M.

Yelp
Came here for the ramen, left with wonderful snacks and some groceries! The tonkatsu ramen was amazing!! Ask for the home made chili sauce!!!

Morgan S.

Yelp
We stopped here in the recommendation of another local business. So happy we did. One of the best lunches we have had in a long time. I had the shrimp shumai and the chicken curry bento box. The food was delicious! My partner had the beef pho which was equally as delicious. We will definitely return! Thank you for such an exquisite lunch.

Yelp
Great Barrington has a lot of sushi restaurants. This has always mystified me because as far as I can tell, we are very far away from the ocean indeed. The only conclusion I can make: the Yuppie Factor. Great Barrington has many yuppies, and they all, apparently, enjoy eating raw fish and feeling vaguely adventurous. So what of Shiro, the Other Japanese Restaurant, playing second fiddle to Bizen? Shiro is located near The Cove bowling alley and the impressive asian art store, in a rather Denny's-esque building. The interior, however, is quite attractive, and I enjoyed the relaxing ambience the owners have created. I was quickly seated - not an issue, as the place was rather empty at 5:30 on a Saturday. Shiro offers hibachi along Benihana lines, which means you get to sit at a grill and watch a chef flip shrimp around while handling a distressingly huge knife. Since I was dining alone, I didn't get this. The menu features your standard Americanize Japanese entrees - teriyaki, udon, tempura, katsu, you know the drill. There's also a variety of sushi rolls and a few reasonably priced lunch entrees, which is one definite advantage over the inflated prices Bizen posts. I wasn't feeling the sushi that night, but I did, however, have an unstoppable desire for seaweed salad ($4.95) and teriyaki salmon ($16.95.) The salmon came with a rather weak miso soup and the typical half-ass Japanese restaurant salad, although the carrot dressing was pretty good - too bad the shredded greens were boring. The seaweed salad appeared promptly and was a standard but tasty rendition, with the satisfying aqua crunch I've come to associate with the dish. The Diet Coke I ordered arrived in a charming tiny glass bottle, which I rarely see in the USA. The salmon arrived on a huge and intimidatingly hot platter, served on a bed of onions and rather depressed looking bean sprouts. I also received about two broccoli, and immediately wished for more, as I am a totally unrepentant Broccoli Whore and would happily eat my weight in it. The fish? Eh...not bad. It was a bit overcooked, but the sauce wasn't insipidly sweet or overdone, and I enjoyed the addition of the crunchy, caramelized onions. (But why are they so stingy on the damn vegetables?) Bizen's teriyaki fish? Much better. Is Shiro a good alternative to Bizen? Maybe. It's much more of a family atmosphere and the prices are lower - but it lacks the cool feeling and the adventurous menu choices that Bizen executes so well. However, if all you want is some simple Japanese food in the area without breaking the bank, Shiro is a decent choice. But is it worth going to for an event, special occasion, or simply for the sake of culinary exploration? No.

Emily Z.

Yelp
My favorite place for sushi in GB, it's way better than Bizen which is overpriced and pretty bad. Shiro is always really good and I go at least once a week!! I do their hibachi like once or twice a year and it's always a fun time. But usually I'll just order off their regular menu and the service is really attentive. There are only two waiters there but somehow the service is always very fast and they will come check on ur table multiple times throughout the meal to make sure you have everything u need.

Anson W.

Yelp
The ramen was amazing and so was the bubble Tea! One of our friends is gluten free and was happy to see so many gluten free options. The owner named Harry was extremely nice and willing to explain the entire menu to us. I highly recommend this place to any one who already loves ramen or is hoping to try something new!

Wesley N.

Yelp
Incredible ramen and excellent grocery selection. Loved it. I got ramen with wontons and they were delicious, melted in my mouth.

Mike K.

Yelp
I would never eat sushi again if what they served us last night was sushi. They where short of wait staff service was very poor and I would rate this as one of the worst meals we have had in This area.

Johhn D.

Yelp
Food is great until You head to the bathroom and wait for the person before you to finish defecate and then leave without washing their hands and they work in the kitchen. Last visit there.

Rocky K.

Yelp
On a scale of 1 to 10, I would give this place a negative 10. A 6:30pm reservation resulted in 6 of 8 kids getting their food in an hour and 2 not served dinner for an additional 45mins. When asked to speak to a manager, the poor waitress, who was at least 60 years old (nice lady) begged me to stay patient and not stress her out. I finally walked out after 2 hours without eating. Never ever attend this restaurant. Embarrassing.

Katherine F.

Yelp
Great Asian market and grill! They have amazing gluten free options such as pad Thai! The bubble tea is also amazing!

Ryan C.

Yelp
Great local spot for sushi, took our daughter who wasn't feeling well at the time and the owner made her a special ginger lemon tea which was delicious and very thoughtful, very nice to have great food and great service all in one establishment without having to choose between the two.

L. C.

Yelp
I have been eating here for years and when I want Japanese, I come here! I have become friendly with the owner and have even purchased some unique jewelry on display by the front door. The main reason I come back is because of the servers, Devon and Doreen they could not be kinder AND they remember what chilled sake I like even when I can remember. They are also very good with special orders to suite your taste. My favorite appetizer is the Shiro-tini. Served in a martini glass it is salmon tartar tossed in tempura flakes with a hint of wasabi with caviar. Another delicious appetizer is the the Yellow Tail Snapper in a lemon sauce, very subtle. For my main course I usually mix it up between Sashimi a la carte and rolls. The Shiro special roll is another of my favorites which has white seaweed out/inside tuna, salmon, yellowtail, scallion & caviar. It is very filling. I usually dine in the dining room but I have also sat at the bar. I have yet to try the hibachi which is always fun when going on with lots of fun food tricks and laughter. The hibachi space is intimate and has 3 Hibachi tables and they also have outside seating. They have an extensive cooked menu as well so this is the perfect place for every palate. It is also a good place for families. As long as I stay in the area I will continue to be a regular there. I have celebrated a birthday there as well as one for my Mom.

Robert J.

Yelp
In a nutshell, Shiro was exactly what I expected. it was neither the best, nor the worst sushi I have ever had. It was enjoyable enough, but it was nowhere near outstanding. The fish wasn't particularly flavorful in comparison to others I have had. The tamago was dry. The unagi in the unagi ju was a bit chewy. I was disappointed that they had no uni tonight. I loved the ama-ebi complete with fried shrimp heads; excellent! The food is okay. It's not bad. It's not great. The food was good enough, however, that I'm willing to return to try other menu items. The service was fine. Unfortunately, the food wasn't good enough for me to have more to say about it. At least, it wasn't bad enough that I have a litany of complaints.

Lisa S.

Yelp
My husband & I had a great experience there. I actually loved and commented on the feng shui of the space. You have several options where to sit. Regular bar, sushi bar, dining room, or one of the large hibachi tables. The service was very professional and prompt. Our sushi was fresh, creative and really good & I thought the sushi chef was great. There was a group of teen girl's celebrating a birthday party (four - maybe 14? year olds w/parents off to corner) over at the next hibachi grill and they were having a great time. It's was quite a show to be entertained by the hibachi chef which added an exciting element to a meal for a small group. There was another family that I noticed the kids seemed enthralled by it all too. It all made for a fun and upbeat night. I would go back for sure.

Renee E.

Yelp
Nothing special, but not bad. Only had a yellow-tail scallion roll as an appitizer, so I cannot comment much on the sushi. The hibachi was typical. Normally hibachi can be funny, but our guy just went through the everyday cooking motions. Barely spoke and was missing a lot of the entertainment factor (which I find important when paying the prices for hibachi). The food was good and prepared correctly, but I would have just sat at a regular table and gotten the same result. Also a very limited mixed drink selection. Nothing appealed to me so I asked for something basic, and they were supposedly all out. Not a big drinker so I wasn't upset, but it was noted.

Yann B.

Yelp
Awesome restaurant! Welcoming crew, very nice food for the price and very pleasant place.

Susan D.

Yelp
Shiro's is the best! Doreen and Linson make quite a team and the fish is always delicious. I like the crispy spicy salmon and whitefish.

Ben R.

Yelp
Not the best Hibachi I've had, but neither was it the worst. Service was attentive but somewhat impersonal - always there to refill my tea and offer service however (which is certainly a nice thing to see in the days of in-and-out dining). Food was fresh but not stand out - not too oily for hibachi and neither overly expensive. In all it's a good place for Hibachi in the Berkshires and I would like to sample the Kitchen and Sushi menus to compare with other local restaurants. I'll be back, I'm sure.

Darcie S.

Yelp
Have been to both locations in Great Barrington MA & Pittsfield MA. Good sushi, always fresh. There are only a few meal & they are pretty standard Japanese for American dishes. Offer habachi in Great Barrington location. You will get a nice meal, you probably won't be blown away. Nice atmosphere in Pittsfield location.

Johanna W.

Yelp
Update (2013): My husband and I have eaten at Shiro in Pittsfield twice (the original review I wrote was based on take-out). The time we ate at the restaurant, we had a much better experience. The food, although nothing especially unique, was solid quality authentic japanese food. In terms of the take-out, we had to try three times before getting a person on the line. They told us they didn't deliver but we could come to pick it up in 45 minutes. When we went to pick it up 45 minutes later, we were ignored for 5 minutes before being attended to. When, over an hour later, we finally opened our bag of food at home, we were not thrilled. . . The miso soups were tiny containers that were each half full. The "side" of white rice($3) was about 1/4 cup of rice. . . the green salad ($4.50) was basically a few leaves of romaine lettuce with some julienned carrots and some dressing (although the dressing- carrot ginger, was very tasty), the edamame was fine. The "Boston" roll ($7.50), a smaller sized roll with shrimp in it. . tasty, but small for the price, and a "Garden" roll ($6.50)- which was probably the best money spent as it was at least a bigger vegeterian roll, also pretty tasty but nothing to write home about. We are looking forward to trying the GB location as we now live only a couple blocks away, when we do, I will update the review.

Vera S.

Yelp
We have had both hibachi and sushi here and have loved both. The Sushi is amazing - don't get sucked in by their "half price off" or whatever Sushi deal - you won't save any money really at all. The Hibachi was good - a TON of food. I feel bad, however, when I am the awkward hibachi table of two adults that the chef is forced to entertain for a while. Probably best to go in a group. We love Shiro!

Harley W.

Yelp
A must Berkshire experience! The food from the kitchen was amazing and the market has everything. The owner Harry is a great guy who walked us through the menu and had many gluten free options.

Ray D.

Yelp
I had shrimp tempura, California rolls, miso soup. I liked the rolls, but thought that the tempura had too much batter and didn't like the soup much. I do like the lady owner. Very friendly. And the place was clean, including their restroom. I do know they have regulars that enjoy the avocado rolls.

Frank Y.

Yelp
Overall it's not too bad. However, the Ramen tastes more alkali than desirable. Yes, alkali should be added but should not be tasted. The soup base is not flavorful.

Jess Z.

Yelp
This place was SO delicious and incredibly fun. One of the most memorable dinners I've ever had, EVER. It's the only Japanese/Sushi restaurant in the area with true yakitori...so cool! The drinks were great and the staff was even better. The owners seem to really care about the ingredients they use. Everything was so fresh and tasty! See you soon Shiro.

annemarie s.

Yelp
The service was great but the sushi was bland. Everything tasted the same. The habachi looked good. Needless to say we won't be back.

Jelly G.

Yelp
ZERO star! This is one of the WORST restaurant I've been to in my entire LIFE. yes that bad! a few key words: walked-out, fly/bug in water, 1 hour+ waiting We went here for dinner. It was pretty empty, 1 % full. Sat down ordered a Nabeyaki udon and chicken skewer set. Nothing extravagant, fairly easy to prepare. Waitress was careless and poured water for us, along with a fly! Disgusting! There were also white mysterious things flowing around in my hubby's water (no it's not lemon bits).... So then comes the salad and miso, which we finished within 5 mins....and 1 hour passed....nothing else came...no chicken skewer...no udon.... 1 + hour later...we decided to walk-out, getting too hungry to wait. There was no manager in the restaurant to address the issues. Waitress charge $6.90 for a tiny serving of salad and miso (that's suppose to come with the set). Walked out angry and even more hungry. Wrote to management, still no reply. This is below standard for any restaurant. Wouldn't be surprised if the health department showed up. The owner should be ashamed! Never again! Beware. it's THAT BAD!

O O.

Yelp
Did not care to eat much of the rice as it tasted not that great, maybe it was an off day for the chef I don't know. Sushi was good though. Overall average hibachi/sushi experience for me. Although I would give it a second chance.

Carla D.

Yelp
Went with friends for sinner. Sushi was mediocre and the kitchen staff (female) used the bathroom when I was in there.. pooped and left the bathroom with out washing her hands. Ill never go back.

Brittney W.

Yelp
What an experience! We've been going to Shiro for years and always have a great meal. We've never posted but feel we owe it to them especially since they added Korean BBQ to the menu. It's a really fun way to try a TON of different flavors. We had a party of 20, and after the chef explained the new menu we left it to him to surprise us with a bunch of different options. The food kept coming, the presentation was clean and appealing, our drinks stayed full, and the food and sauces were dynamite. We couldn't have ordered up a better menu. Not to mention the chef and his assistant were so sweet, and the price was right. We can't wait to go back.

Chrissy W.

Yelp
On our way back to our hotel in Farmington, CT from Becket, MA, we decided to take a detour off of Highway 8 for Shiro Sushi & Hibachi Japanese Cuisine Restaurant in Great Barrington, MA. What a mistake!! We should've just waited for a fast-food drive-thru along the way, but I was craving Japanese food. Well......the food was not horrible, BUT.......it was not very good either. A Japanese name, Japanese decor and a menu with Japanese dishes does not make it a Japanese restaurant! A Japanese Restaurant that does not offer ocha?!? They didn't even know what ocha was! Typically, a bowl of rice, sunomono & miso soup comes with your meal but we were charged for each item! And I didn't realize, that Japanese food was now served in courses! My son received his order of fried rice within five minutes of us ordering it. They must have been wanting to get rid of some bad rice, because it tasted as if it was burnt so they tried to mask it with adding too much soy sauce. My son did not eat it. We ordered a California Roll, Spicy California Roll, Gyoza, and Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura. The Gyoza didn't come with rice, so I had to order a side of rice which actually came in a rice bowl (surprise!), but it cost $2.50! A bowl of rice did come with the Tempura, but it was a much smaller bowl serving about half of a regular rice bowl serving. After my son received his fried rice, about 10 minutes later my Gyoza which was lacking any flavor arrived, and I had to ask for the bowl of rice I ordered. About 10 minutes later, my dad received his Shrimp & Vegetable Tempura which tasted fine. And about 10 minutes after that we received our California Rolls. The rolls were not made with enough rice which made them very small, and the Spicy California Roll's spicy came from a sprinkling of a sauce that tasted like Thousand Island dressing with a little hot sauce added to it! I should have returned the fried rice and the California Rolls and refused to pay for them, but I thought that would be rude. An hour & $80 later, my dad paid the bill and left the server a $5 tip (yes, it was less than 10 percent, but a little more than 5 percent); we left and were getting settled in the car. I was entering info into my GPS and looked up to see our server standing outside of the open driver's side car door asking my dad ".....was your service bad? Did I give you good service or not?" My dad responded and told him the service was okay, and the server responded by saying "most people at least give me 10 percent tip!" My dad replied with "You are behaving very rudely." And the server told my father that by leaving less than 10 percent tip was very rude. This action by the server and the quality of food forces me to give this place only one star. It is not Japanese Cuisine, but more of an Asian Food Restaurant with bland tasting food. I appreciate the customer service industry & have much respect for servers at restaurants (including delivery servers) and usually tip 15-22 percent for good to great service. Anything below good service is subject to 0-10 percent, but I have never not given a tip.
