The Best Japanese Food in Portland, Oregon and Its Suburbs | Eater Portland

"Specials like ahi tempura donburi and una jyu lure regulars into this family-friendly restaurant, but the handmade gyoza are delicate, juicy, and a deliciously repeatable addition to any order. SHO boasts an extensive sake and Japanese whisky list, which can be ordered in flights or by the glass, katakuchi (spouted bowl), or bottle. The restaurant bottles its sauces, like teriyaki-garlic sauce and sesame-yuzu dressing, which are available for purchase." - Janey Wong

The food was really good! We went for their kitchen dishes and their rolls, and both were great. They also have kids’ meals, which was a nice bonus for our family. The staff is very prompt and attentive, and they have outdoor seating too. Our favorite was the Devouring Flame Roll, definitely recommend trying it

After a remodel, this place has become more upscale. Yet the food is consistently good. It’s close by and an easy place to go without reservations. You can either sit at the sushi bar or TV monitor. They also have tables with high backs that allow lots of privacy. The udon and Ramen are always tasty. Sushi is good and a popular favorite.

Google
Delicious, authentic Japanese food and friendly staff. Tastes like you are in Japan and tastes like my mom's authentic Japanese food she used to make growing up. I ordered the lunch bento with assorted tempura and pork katsu. It was delicious! My son ordered the kids ramen and enjoyed it. I highly recommend this local Japanese restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

Dinner for 4. Broiled Saba, miso soup clean and clear. Wagu in chefs special sauce on table grill- melt in your mouth. chicken Katsu curryy-homemade. chefs special sashimi, other fresh wasabi. Yakatori and cheese cake. Everything to quality and most delicious. Sashimi was fresh melt in your mouth sweet. Best I’ve had outside of Japan. It was a celebration.

Google
Wow! Excellent sushi and love the interior vibe which is light woods and recently remodeled. Do not be fooled by the exterior. Worth the drive as it’s in SW Portland. We started with miso and then shared the sashimi and two rolls. My favorite was the Hanabi roll and my daughter loved the King Dragon roll which was surprisingly a bit spicy. Look forward to returning.

Google
Sho has a pleasant atmosphere with friendly and attentive staff. I've fallen in love with the various flavors of ramen and sushi and there's so much more to try. They have an excellent selection of saki as well. The prices are less than you'd expect for the quality and portions.

Google
My husband has been eating here frequently with friends after a weekly PCC class. He likes the food, service and atmosphere. I finally got to eat there this week and really enjoyed the high quality, reasonably priced food. You can order lots of small plates or a larger plate and there are lots of options. The tempura was awesome - the shrimp are very large and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. I also had edamame and a cucumber salad.

Google
A quaint neighborhood restaurant with quality food. The portions are a good size for the price and the food is really tasty! Not pictured was the pork katsu curry which was too delicious and devoured before I got to snap a pic lol. definitely would visit again! Really delicious.

Yelp
Delicious sushi that is beautifully presented and they had amazing customer service. Clean inside with an outdoor patio

Yelp
I'm so glad that Sho is open again. After a five month storm damage repair, it's newly rebuilt in a beautiful minimalist style. Katsu is as welcoming as ever. It's like going to a friend's house more than a restaurant,...if your friend is an awesome cook! The menu still contains great sushi options, but also has more of an izakaya flavor. It's great! Lots of Japanese comfort food, in addition to a complete bar, and real deal sushi chefs. I love sitting at the sushi bar and watching them work. This is a legitimate Japanese restaurant, which would fit in on Honshu as well as it does in our neighborhood.

Yelp
The food was good but the service was really slow. We may have just caught them in an off night but we were on our way to a Timbers game and it took an hour just to get our sushi. We were sitting for about 15 minutes with just water and then had to politely flag someone down to ask if we could please order and then waited forever for food. The staff was very nice though.

Yelp
Sho turned out to be a delightful place to meet up with a friend for a refined, delightful lunch. I had the chicken katsu bento box, which was everything I hoped for, plus it came with something I've never run into before - a light potato salad that I really enjoyed. Access to the parking lot can be a bit tricky, depending on traffic. Fortunately, you can get into the lot on either the east or west side of the building - the west entrance is farther from the intersection, so there's less likelihood of being blocked by eastbound traffic waiting for the light. The other access issue that I encountered was that the restaurant's web site is blocked by my security software. Not sure why, but checking the menu before my visit was a challenge. The atmosphere at Sho was also just what I wanted - quiet and calming. I find that this really adds to my enjoyment of a meal.

Yelp
Local yes, smilely no. Good parking yes, clean bathrooms no. Spacious seating yes, updated decor no. Large menu yes, satisfied tummy no. Sushi rolls yes, expensive yes yes. There was only one major reason this dinner did not receive a fourth star ~ poor service. For not authentic sushi, at least give legitimate service when you ask for 25% tip :(

Yelp
The staff here is super friendly and nice! This was my first time dining at SHO and I ordered the omakase for lunch, and it was delicious. The only thing that did throw me was the beef nigiri in there -- not something I commonly see in an omakase, but it was not bad at all (this is not a sashimi style beef, it was a seared steak, where a slice was put on top of rice, nigiri-style. They also provide fresh wasabi (very potent), which is a great kick for your tastebuds. All the portions were decent pieces of fish, they definitely do not skimp! And for those concerned about the freshness of their fish--it is super fresh, firm, cold, and melts in your mouth. I am very particular about the quality of fish, all the items in the omakase was near the top--I even did the sniff test (haha) - no fishy smells. I also tried their Yuzu Calpico -- I love Yuzu and I absolutely love this drink that I'm going to try to make it at home! It has the delicious flavors of yuzu, the carbonation from the club soda, and the mellowing sweetness of the Calpico. This place is definitely on my places to visit next time I'm in town. I only wished I had found this place back when I lived in Oregon!

Yelp
Went there for dinner on weekdays at 6. There're not many people at that time. It looks like they have only one server for the entire place. Other than seating you, take your order and bring you the bill. Don't think about you get any service from them. They didn't even come refill our water. Sushi was ok. It's nothing special. We ordered unagi roll. The unagi was so tiny. Very disappointed. We also ordered a Tokyo ramen. The egg is over cooked. Broth was lukewarm. Another disappointment.

Yelp
Perfectly adequate Japanese food. Things are a little sweeter than I normally see at other Japanese restaurants. Service was fine and efficient. Place is clean There are other Japanese restaurants I'd put higher in the list to go to.
google avatar

Surabhi A.

Yelp
Initial impressions seemed promising, but unfortunately, the experience fell short. While the restaurant presented well with polite staff and a weekday crowd, the ramen lacked flavor, and the fried chicken had an unusual batter taste, making it unappealingly hard. On a positive note, the sushi order stood out and warrants the two-star rating.
google avatar

Odulami B.

Yelp
I've returned 5 times (in the last 6 months) in hopes of having the dining experience (rated a 4 tow years ago) from my first visit but it has steadily declined over the past couple years. We waited about an hour on the previous two visits and were likely too hungry to notice the quality of food. Service was faster on this visit but the sushi was not great. The fish on the Hanabi was as thin as a fruit roll up, the Route 66 was comparable to an over cooked fishstick. I understand that there is a lower bar post covid but this is well below the curve.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
The large street signage, vast interior, Korean hostess, and Latin American server doesn't exactly scream authentic, but we were very satisfied. The Omakase was a hit, the Spicy Tuna roll, was average, the miso better than, and the creamy scallop nigiri much better than. The cocktails are generous. Great service, portions and prices.

Yelp
Totally guilty of judging this spot, thinking how can a sushi place nestled between a dingy motel and a mcdonalds be good??!!! WRONG I WAS. This spot is excellent! Sushi is great, but I actually enjoy their ramen and gohan rice dishes just as much. Amazing food, clean, great staff, priced well...Please support this amazing local establishment! They are so awesome! Thank you, SHO!
google avatar

Austin N.

Yelp
Good location with plenty of parking and tables to accommodate large groups! The interior was clean, nicely decorated, and service was nice. Sashimi came with surprising large cuts but the quality of the fish was decent. I enjoyed the interior and ambiance, their drink and sake selection was quite vast as well.

Yelp
Beyond the best, we dine here every time we come to Portland, everything is prepared to exacting standards of authentic Japanese Cuisine,

Yelp
This is an incredible dining experience and I have very high expectations. Sho has a true Itamae or head Japanese sushi chef who is 2nd to none in this area. He understands the art way beyond most will ever acquire in a lifetime. It was a real treat to have bluefin as an option today with my regular maguro order as well as chutoro and real Japanese uni. The age dashi tofu is the best you will find in Oregon. I also ordered the black mushroom ramen which was some of the best broth I've ever enjoyed in 3 different countries. Amazing flavor and quality not often found in Oregon. The owner is very proud and expects the most of not just the food, but customer service and the overall dining experience as well. If you enjoy quality Japanese cuisine in its entirety, this is a must try in the Portland area. Really it is your only option for consistent authentic Japanese food. Most Japanese restaurants are impostors, selling cheap imitation Japanese cuisine. SHO only sells real Japanese food at its finest!!! The prices are extremely reasonable for the high quality and masterful cuts. You will literally have to go to Japan to find better for the price. You can find this quality in southern California, but it will cost you double what SHO charges.
google avatar

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
SHO is one of the few authentic Japanese restaurants in town. SHO is a restaurant for Zen dining, peaceful, semi private booths, where you can relax and eat sushi, donburi bowls, etc. and drink sake. The Japanese chef artfully prepares the food, almost with an Ikebana sense of Zen. SHO salad dressing is my absolute favorite. I buy their salad dressing to take it home. Their salad dressing and marinate is also available at Uwajimaya. If you are dining alone, and want to watch Sumo Wrestling, you can be asked to be seated in the more active area of the restaurant. There is also a large patio with umbrellas outside, and a very large private parking lot.

Yelp
One of the best Japanese restaurants that I have ever being to. The owner is the best, what a friendly and pleasant person to be around, and same goes for his staff. Very nice people! The food is great, some of the freshest fish I have ever had. There's nothing worse than bad sushi. I don't think you would ever have bad fish here. There small plates are fantastic, not only is it presented arrangementbut all are very tasty. I think they have one of the best sushi chefs in town, Hashimoto-San.

Darcy R.

Yelp
Closed temporarily due to storm damage, but our fave place for Udon and Donburi. My favorite dish is anything with the eel!
google avatar

Tiffany R.

Yelp
Great Sushi. Fresh, many rolls to choose from. Great Ramen. I am so full if I eat it all! I try to save a small portion for later. Great service and interior. Friendly staff and quick service. Take out is great, too. Thanks Sho!
google avatar

Yelp
Fresh, authentic sushi! Ordered a bunch of stuff, and everything was incredibly good. Gem of a restaurant in the "suburbs" for sure.

Yelp
Nice job for fast food sushi! Service is quick and food is delicious! Fair prices too! Love when they put out fresh fruit!
google avatar

Yelp
SHO is my new favorite sushi stop around the Portland and Beaverton area-- the others are not even close. Highly recommend the seared salmon, nigiri, and ramen. Truly authentic sushi, I couldn't help myself but other more to take home. Excellent service as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Had a good evening and sushi time! Enjoyed the Chefs Sushi platter and several small plates. They have a large Sake and Shochu selection to pick from which was great! We will back as we loved this sushi spot!
google avatar

Josephine H.

Yelp
It's very authentic and their price are very reasonable too. Servings are quite big . place is clean and Servers are very polite. They also have sushi bar and serves fresh sashimi and nigiri sushi. Also have a variety of ramen to choose from , curry tempura and great salads to pair with . I always come to this place and it's such an awesome shop to visit with friends and family. They observe safety protocols .
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Excellent, hearty food, great sake, and friendly service. The room feels cozy and somewhat fancy at the same time. Loved it, will be back soon.
google avatar

Viktoriya D.

Yelp
While the fish is pretty fresh the fish to rice rations are pathetic. I ordered the lunch sushi combo a few months ago and it was great. Ordered again today and it's all rice with the tiniest amount of fish imaginable. Is this a joke? I've never seen sushi prepared like this. Skimping and robbing people of their money at its finest. Will not be ordering here again unless this changes. $25 for a box half filled with rice.
google avatar

Christie S.

Yelp
We haven't dined in, we've ordered take out several times since it's close to our home and we have young kids. Orders have always been accurate, they have alcohol to go, food is always appropriately packaged, no spills, condiments and appropriate utensils always included. Fried food is really difficult to get right to go and tempura has always been great (warm and not soggy). Great service, amazing staff over the phone and in person when arrived to pick up. We've spend 100s of $$$ here and we've been in the neighborhood for a few months. Huge fans!
google avatar

Guy F.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place as it's the closest sushi to my house. The ordering process on their website was pretty straightforward. The food however was not much better than what you'd expect from a conveyor belt sushi place. The sushi rice was well made but the rolls were small and lacked protein. My $14 (snow crab) California Roll had little to no crabmeat and was mostly rice. It's safe to say I won't be back.
google avatar

Deb K.

Yelp
This is our family's go to for a local Japanese meal. They are conveniently located and we can usually get a reservation for the six of us. Our boys and their wives really love the food here, especially the sushi, katsu, and ramen. We probably go there a couple times a month!

V S.

Yelp
Super sushi! It's fun to sit at the sushi bar and watch the chefs at work. The staff is nice - doesn't bother you, but is attentive when you need something. They have a deep selection of sake to accompany their food.

Huma P.

Yelp
Good food, somewhat expensive for the amount and quality. Enjoyed ambiance, and the sumo on tvs.
google avatar

Carrie M.

Yelp
I love this place! The sushi is always super fresh and the rolls are beautiful. My favorite is the Rainbow roll, with bluefin, salmon, yellow fish and shrimp. Prices are reasonable and service I'd good.
google avatar

Louanne F.

Yelp
This is the second restaurant I visited since Multnomah county opened for Phase 1 during Covid and they are doing a great job with the safety measures! They take the necessary precautions, the seats were all at least 6 ft apart, dining was limited seating and all the employees were wearing masks. I've been here numerous times but can't believe I haven't written a review yet because the food here is delicious!! There are only a handful of authentic Japanese restaurants owned by Japanese in Portland and this happens to be one of them! From appetizers to sushi, donburi to ramen, I haven't found a dish that I didn't like here! The prices here are definitely on the pricey side. However, the quality of ingredients and taste is something worth paying for in my opinion! This is one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Portland and haven't found another that's comparable in every way. Give this place a try when you have the chance!!
google avatar

Yaya S.

Yelp
go to sho ‍-- i really like this restaurant. they have different menus (lunch, dinner, sushi) so there is a big variety to choose from. the dinner menu can be ordered from all day. we ordered the black miso cod, hamachi belly carpaccio, and salmon/hamachi mixed poke. we have made a few visits here before, and everything we have tried on their menu has been fresh and delicious! the seating area is spacious, and the booths make things feel pretty nice and private.
google avatar

Jay S.

Yelp
I like my rainbow rolls and unagi rolls, rainbow rolls have tuna, king salmon, yellow tail and shrimp , tasted fresh and good mixture, avocado made it more creamy. Unagi was on sweet side with sauce, I like fresh eel rolls. I did try sear Oregon roll, it was ok. Tataki beef rolls, I tried a piece, beef was little chew, flavor was We went back again for dinner, we sat outside. Chicken Katsu was good, crispy and curry is not overwhelming. Triple impact was good combination of 3 different types of fish. Hawaii sunshine was ok. I like the triple impact and unagi.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Stopped by this restaurant with the goal of grabbing a dinner before heading home from our trip to Portland. We wanted sashimi. I ordered maguro and she order salmon. We also got a roll. All tasted great and the service was good too. Although the sashimi was a little pricey for what you got. Not a bad a spot in a pinch.
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
Sho is like your neighborhood Japanese restaurant. They do a little bit of everything and are pretty good, but won't blow your mind. The atmosphere is laid back - I love the ambiance and the privacy of all the booth seats. I think Sho is a solid option if you live in the area, but I wouldn't make a trek out here to Barbur Blvd just for Sho. I also think you should look elsewhere for great sushi - their sushi was just okay and I think their kitchen food, especially dishes using their sauces, was much better. We came in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon, looking to kill some time before an appointment. There were a few other parties in the restaurant but it was otherwise pretty quiet. We ordered from the lunch specials menu: a sushi lunch with a hawaiian sunshine and rainbow rolls; and a bento lunch combo with the assorted tempura and ginger pork. The bento was pretty good, except for the potato salad which was a bit under seasoned. It tasted like american mayo, not Japanese Kewpie mayo. The pork was nicely seasoned and a perfect level of saltiness to go with the rice. The sushi was alright. The fish was fresh but the rice was a little on the hard side and under seasoned. We couldn't really taste much vinegar, which is critical in good sushi. The sesame spinach was also a non traditional take on goma-ae; it had peppers and the sesame seeds weren't ground. We thought it was under seasoned too. Overall, for about $50 including tip for lunch for two people, I was a little disappointed about the sushi. I might pop in for happy hour if I am nearby but I don't think I'd come back for lunch.

Yelp
This is a very good sushi restaurant. We go there often and have taken others there and everyone loved it. Fresh quality fish for your pleasure.

Yelp
On a busy Mother's Day I decided I wanted sushi again even tho' we had sushi track the day before. Because one can never have too much sushi. Sushi on a Sunday at 3 is difficult, either sit down and be waited on sushi places are not open at all or they only open for dinner.Or they close between lunch and dinner. Sho was in my bookmarks ( thanks to Oliver N. !) and was open all day. It was pretty quiet when we arrived, there were people on the patio and maybe one table full inside, with more families arriving as we were wrapping up. Our initial server ( we had two and also the manager swung by with water) was quiet but efficient. Our second server was lovely and friendly. This was a good experience. We ordered cucumber salads, salmon teriyaki bento, a sushi lunch combination, and desserts. Everything tasted fresh and delicious and was nicely presented. The miso is especially good because they make their own dashi. They also use wild and locally sourced ingredients. We really liked their sesame salad dressing. All in all this was a lovely meal. Prices were pretty typical for Portland. We would come again.

Yelp
Great chicken caraage and sushi. Had a lovely meal there and a good service. If you live in Tigard or SW, it's a good spot to go.

Tristan H.

Yelp
This place is my favorite sushi in Portland. It is the holy trinity of food, atmosphere and service. Their featured sushi specials are like gastronomic art, and you almost feel bad eating them because they're so pretty. The booths have a little privacy screen around them which keeps background noise to a minimum, and keeps your kids from popping up and playing peek-a-boo with the people at the next table over. Parents of young kids will know how much this is worth. I've been going to this place for years. Their service suffered during the pandemic, but whose didn't?

Judy M.

Yelp
A neighborhood gem with quality sushi and sashimi. Many creative dishes to try. Thank you to Katsu and staff for always welcoming us.

Yelp
It is delicious,, fresh and local! Our family are long time fans of this place after initially being recommended by friends and coworkers. We have had the ramen, lunch bento and sushi before. All of it was great! Especially the ramen this time when sick with a cold. Definitely recommend them! :)
google avatar

Yelp
I decided to eat hear based on a Yelp review of 4 stars. I was really disappointed. Normal the Yelp reviews are really close but not this time. I love Sushi, and eat it quite often. The atmosphere was good but the food was not. First of all someone called it authentic, I would have to Disagree. Authentic sushi is based on the fish. It was hard for me to find something that was not either fried Or spicy. And the fish was not fresh, it tasted old. The staff was nice but I will not be back. If you have not been here I would pass. Not great sushi at a high $$$.

Naomi I.

Yelp
Authentic and oishii! This our go to place for delish Japanese cuisine. Love the butter fish!
google avatar

Maya K.

Yelp
Fresh and delicious sushi. Great Sake selection! My favorite was the clam sashimi, it was so naturally sweet and creamy. The spicy tuna roll was also very impressive! They have both outdoor and indoor seating. All the staff wears masks.

Yelp
Love love love Sho's fresh sushi, nice owner and employees. Its consistently good, tasty, healthy food in a down-to-earth setting. I would eat here every day if I could.

Yelp
Went here for dinner tonight. Just me and my SO, looking for a new place to patronize. We ordered the Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen, Butter Miso Tonkotsu Ramen and a Hanabi roll. The sushi was OK. My order of the miso Ramen was mild, but tasty. I think my SO's soup was just tonkotsu. There were no visible flecks of black garlic and not even any garlic flavor whatsoever. Wrong order was forgivable. We were hungry and it was cold/rainy. But the service was severely lacking. The mgr/proprietor basically pushed us out (asking several times if we were finished yet before I was even half done with my meal). There was a sign at the table that said to please limit your stay to 60 minutes. That timer must have started as soon as we set foot in the place because I don't think we were there 30 minutes before we were asked the first time, if we were done yet. In think 3 stars is generous. Like I said, the soup was good, but the quality of service will keep us from returning or recommending this place to others.

tommy g.

Yelp
First impression is the entrance is through the bar. Not welcoming. Then there is the service. Not welcoming and no one never checked back to ask how is your food. The food was bad and not worth going back for. Disappointing for Japanese dining which is normally all about the details. This place is just tired. We figured out that the entrance was through the bar because the food is not the attraction.

Yelp
This place is listed as gluten free friendly and Celiac safe. Two of us went here for lunch and inquired about safe practice to avoid cross contamination. They DO NOT take any precautions such as using a clean board and knife to make your sushi order. We cannot recommend Sho if you are looking for a safe gluten free meal. We left without eating and drove downtown to a different sushi restaurant.
