Japan’s First Woman Soy Sauce Sommelier Is Helping Save Tradition on Shodoshima - AFAR

"This chicken-foot–shaped island in the Seto Inland Sea, whose name means “Island of Small Beans,” is a sleepy yet serene destination famed for a stretch of soft white sandbar that links the main island to three tiny islets and for olive groves fanning the south coast — it was the first area in Japan to grow olives and is sister to Milos, Greece. Historically a major center of soy sauce production, the island once hosted hundreds of breweries and still contains more than 1,000 traditional wooden fermentation vats (kioke), making it a rare stronghold of honjozo, small-batch soy sauce brewing; local artisans often age moromi far longer than industrial producers, and visitors can take behind-the-scenes brewery tours and tastings to experience distinct regional flavors and traditional techniques." - Katherine LaGrave

Uncover the hidden gems of Setouchi, Japan - SilverKris

"An island known for its olive groves and seasonal natural wonders, including a cream-coloured sandbar that appears only twice a day and a majestic gorge that becomes especially striking in autumn." - Mimi Tiu

"On Shodo island, the host visits with food writer Nancy Singleton Hachisu and learns the art of miso from a woman named Kazumi, who is declared to be a “miso master.” Near the end of the episode, Nosrat, Hachisu, and Yuri prepare a meal in Hachisu’s home. They make boiled eggs seasoned with miso, tai meshi, a soup comprised of the Japanese tai fish, dashi, and rice."

This place is really beautiful. I only wished I stayed more than 2 nights. The island is a lot larger than it looks so you need probably around 4 days to see it all. Also some of the buses and ferries don't run on Wednesdays

Been here more than a year ago and I still miss the island. 2 days are not enough to travel around if you know where to go. So many beautiful, fun and interesting places for such a small island. Car rental is a must.

There are a few ports in Shodoshima Island — the one we chose to go was to Tonosho port, and the round-trip ticket is 1330 yen; relatively cheap as the ferry itself is spacious and offers a spacious view of the sea and surrounding islands on the upper deck. There are also piping hot udon in the ferry, and they're absolutely delicious. Give them a try! It's recommended for you to stay in Shodoshima Island for a few days if you're planning to go around the island. It has a few scenic tourist spots like the Angel Road and Olive Park, but they're quite far from each other. As such, it's advisable for you to go around the island with a rental car (there are many companies offering the service around the island) as the island is big enough and the public transports aren't available throughout the day (there are hours of waiting in between). Make sure to check the boarding times from Kagawa to Shodoshima so that you don't miss the ferry home.
