The Best Restaurants in Portland’s Woodstock Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"More is more at Shoko Sushi, which serves hearty portions from a wide-ranging menu anchored by sushi but also featuring ramen, teriyaki, tonkatsu, and Korean dishes like bulgogi and bibimbap. The bento combos offer a mix of cooked dishes and sushi, alongside rice, salad, and the chef’s choice of the day. The wood-heavy décor is homey and inviting, and with a kids menu and mochi ice cream for dessert, Shoko is a solid choice for families." - Nathan Williams

Low key restaurant with friendly staff and amazing food. The bacon jalapeño poppers were outstanding along with the pork belly skewers. The win er was the Korean Army stew they had on special. I will be back sooner rather than later.

Was craving some udon noodles and this place is very nice. Food is delicious. Fast. Only if they were playing some japanese songs would be super cool. *udon came with 2 tempuras*

My absolute favorite Japanese food place in the neighborhood. The vibe is hip with some cool anime memorabilia on display alongside traditional Japanese decor. There is a cute attached 'patio' area if you want to sit outside without sitting outside. The food is incredible and always fresh and tasty. I've eaten here several times and have never been disappointed. The dishes also have some of the most beautiful presentations I've seen at a casual restaurant. Every bit is arranged with obviously care. The servers are super attentive and friendly. I've always felt welcome whether dining solo or with friends.

Best ramen shop in Portland! Everything is so fresh and beautifully cooked. The cozy seating and wonderful art makes for a fun date night or gathering with friends and family.

I've been here twice in the last couple of months and I absolutely love this spot! Great, authentic food, friendly staff and pretty decent prices especially for the quality that you get. The presentation of everything is so pretty too! On top of all that, everyone there is very patient with me when I try to use some of my very limited Japanese :)

Delicious, a hit every time. Quiet cozy restaurant for lunch. Reasonable prices and quick service. Udon had to be my favorite.

I was excited to try this spot, as we are regulars at the Tomo location on Hawthorne. After the experience we had tonight, my advice is to enjoy Tomo by heading over to Hawthorne, but skip this location. The service tonight was atrocious. I’m not sure if it was an “off” night, but no one made eye contact with us, and it took an ungodly amount of time to even get glasses for water. My dish came out at least 15 minutes before my daughter’s, and I was just about finished at that point. No one checked in with us, and absolutely no eye contact or ability to get a server’s attention. When we were finished, we waited so long for a check that never came, that I decided to go to the front to try to pay. The woman at the front was rude- unhappy that I left my seat? I have no idea, as I was friendly this entire time. The server that rang me up did not say thank you or goodbye or anything when I paid. Tomo on Hawthorne has friendly, attentive staff and a great kiosk ordering system. I will also mention that although the food was overall great and not part of the problem, my daughter did mention that the broth of the Tonkotsu ramen “lacked flavor” compared to the other location.

We were surprised to find this place empty on a Friday evening, especially considering how delicious the food was. We ordered the Sake flight, a Gokyo sake bottle, Tonkotsu ramen, chicken Donburi, chicken Nest Ramen, Gyoza, and Edamame. Every dish came in generous portions—a rare treat these days—and we all left with leftovers. The ingredients were high quality, and each broth was rich and flavorful. We did add extra chili oil for a spicier kick, though that’s likely just our personal preference. The restaurant had a calm, inviting atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and attentive. The only downside was that my Tonkotsu had a bit less pork belly than expected. Still, it was a great experience overall. Definitely planning to come back.

I had a blast in that cozy place! The food was delicious, and the service was top-notch.

Yelp
Hands down the best teriyaki in Portland. I always went for the ramen but today was craving teriyaki and ya'll!!! This place does not disappoint. It was so incredible and so much flavor and variety. Yum!

Yelp
Delicious ramen dishes! I ordered a special - Kimchi Ramen -- that was a nice level spiciness and kimchi zing. Friendly staff and nice environment, too.

Yelp
AMAZING authentic ramen. Great 80s music. Love this place. Totally worth the price. Would go back 100 times. And I'm pretty picky!

Yelp
UGH!! They played loud rap music in the background that left me with a headache for the rest of the day. It was annoying and didn't really suit the atmosphere of the restaurant. We ordered the food from a kiosk that was right in front of the door, so if someone was trying to get in, they'd have to wait for the people using the kiosk to move. That layout was strange. The food portion was generous and filling! We ordered the karaage don ($16.60), tonkotsu miso ramen ($17.50), and spicy seafood ramen ($20) and we feel like the karaage don was the best out of everything. The chicken was juicy and I loved the sauces that it came on the side. My family felt like the ramen was average, even a little bland. It did come with a lot of toppings though, which was great. The service was also a bit slow and it was borderline agonizing having to listen to the loud rap music playing in the background while we waited for the food to arrive. I'd recommend trying this place for the food, not to experience the ambiance.

Yelp

Yelp
If you've been to the first location on Hawthorne, quality and service is the same. The bowls of ramen are larger than other restaurants. As far as taste, I'd give it a 3/5. Staff was very attentive and the food came out very quick.

Yelp
Love this spot. One of my faves. Great food and Japanese beer on tap. Sake flights. What more can you ask for.

Yelp
I grew up in this neighborhood and it's great to comeback to some amazing food! This was my first time eating here and I give it 5 stars. The atmosphere was great, the service was excellent, and the staff was amazing! The food was excellent on top of everything. Fresh ingredients, big portions, and it all came out very quickly. Will be coming here again, thanks for the amazing food today.

Yelp
I got the tonkotsu ramen and it was alright. The broth was ok, the meat was pretty good, but I think there was a bit too much of the other toppings. Service was pretty good, everything came out quick.

Yelp
I'm a huge ramen fan and my spicy seafood ramen last night (my first visit) was among the best I've had. The seafood was abundant, and the noodles and spice level perfect. This is a bold statement in Portland, but it's better than Afuri, and less expensive. Not horribly busy (yet). Great service. And Japanese-American owned and operated. I'll be back soon and often!

Yelp
I was concerned immediately when picking up an order for takeout that felt like it was 20lbs. This place is to Ramen what Saburos is to sushi. Huge portions, terrible quality. The Chashu pork was large, but dry, too thickly cut, and tough chunks of fat. But the worst part was the Tonkatsu broth which should be the star. It's like they ran low on broth, and then watered it down with tap water. My wife will normally eat anything we've already paid for, but once she tasted the broth, she put her utensils down and went hungry. It was that bad and concerning. Overall just a bizarre experience. They should cut the portions in half(or more) and focus on quality, otherwise I don't think this location will last long.

Yelp
With many good reviews and a cute restaurant vibe we gave this place a try... and immediately regret our decision. This is the most low brow ramen we have ever encountered. The broth, which for many ramen shops is often the star of the show, was so watered down there was no flavor. The meat was dry, tough and flavorless. The noodles cheap and unappealing. The food, while abundant, was inedible. Adding condiments did not improve the fare. I hate wasting food but this ramen was so terrible we couldn't eat it and threw it out after a few bites.

Yelp
Best ramen in town. We loved the Hawthorne location and this new location in Woodstock lives up to the legacy. Noodle to toppings ratio is perfect, broth is super flavorful, and service was excellent. Highly recommend. Great layout for kids!

Yelp
Big portions, tasty, and quick service! I could go on but I am too busy eating the delicious chicken Ramen I just ordered while enjoying a beer and sake.

Yelp
staff are friendly, the place is clean and has a nice modern vibe with mostly black and red colors. the ramen was alright. i think it needs a bit more noodles and a bit less of everything else. they don't skimp on the toppings thats for sure! The cha su pork was honestly a bit too much because they gave alot of very thick slices, but they melt in your mouth and actually have flavor compared to other places. The prices may look a bit high and im not too sure if its worth the price, but you do at the very least get a very large bowl of noodles.

Yelp
Great place to eat, imbibe wiskey & beer. Service was fast, friendly. Nice presemtation, nice ambience

Yelp
Tomo is amazing and one of the beat Ramen houses I have ever been to. The new location in Woodstock has excellent service and atmosphere. The miso Ramen is to.die for so lucky that it is now in my neighborhood.
