Live a Little and Order the Dessert at Charleston Newcomer Shokudô | Eater Carolinas

"Under chef Masatomo “Masa” Hamaya, this Charleston newcomer brings Japanese tavern fare to Upper King, offering skewers of grilled meats, ramen, fancy small bites, gyoza, creative desserts, and hand rolls made with local seafood. I found it more upscale than a typical izakaya yet still lively and casual: before sunset the room is calm with warm wood tones, glowing candles, and subtle artwork, but as it fills an upbeat soundtrack and a palpable buzz take over. The Japanese grill in the glowing window to the open kitchen becomes the star, sending smoky aromas through the dining room, and there’s a more raucous beer garden out back with neon lights and colorful murals. For must-orders, the uni toastettes—combining red urchin, lardo, and milkbread and topped with salmon roe—are a super-indulgent bite that had me melting from the buttery richness; the toro beef skewer delivers melt-in-your-mouth short rib with mushroom slices for extra umami and hints of grill char for smoke; and the Golden Arches Hand Pie, served in a red cardboard sleeve, is aces above the fast-food original with roasted South Carolina apples, butterscotch, a crisp flaky crust, and a side of miso caramel for dipping. A small insider touch: the big red neon sign at the back bar reads “mono no aware,” a nod to nostalgia and the beauty of impermanence." - Erin Perkins

Shokudô Adds Japanese Tavern Fare to Upper King | Eater Carolinas

"A posh Japanese tavern on Upper King, this spot serves kushiyaki (skewered meats), ramen, fancy small bites, dumplings, and hand rolls made with local seafood; chef Masatomo “Masa” Hamaya is working with Carolina fishmongers to bring in yellowfin tuna, red grouper, blue crab, vermilion snapper, and more. There’s sushi in the form of hand rolls (not competing with O-Ku for nigiri or sashimi). Grilled skewers go beyond typical izakaya fare with combinations like lamb shoulder with curry pickled onion and duck meatball with lotus root. “At Shokudô, we want to do something very special that is one of a kind,” says Hamaya. The design channels a Japanese farmhouse and the wabi-sabi aesthetic—calm interiors with warm wood tones, glowing candles, subtle artwork, and exposed brick—while outside a beer garden features a bright mural by local artist Nysa Hicks Puig, a full bar, and a neon sign translating to “mono no aware” (“the pathos of things”), basically business in the front and party in the back. The bar offers an extensive sake collection, patrons can peer into the kitchen, and the tranquil dining room is open Wednesday through Sunday." - Erin Perkins

We tried this newer restaurant to celebrate a birthday. Friendly knowledgeable Tyniyah is an Incredible attentive server and explained each ingredient with detail. The food was amazing, and as encouraged, our group shared the appetizers, main courses, and desserts. The menu has great variety and everything our group ordered was full of flavor. We were sitting close to the kitchen and we could see the chefs and servers keeping an eye of detail and cleanliness during the preparation and presentation that impressed our group.

If you’re willing to pay, quality upscale dining still exists and is accessible in Charleston. In a market saturated with a wide array of different Asian cuisines, Shokudo already stands apart despite having just opened. They have exceptional food, great service, in a beautiful space. We didn’t go into the beer garden, but the main dining room was a fantastic place to experience the Izakaya style food. Recommend ordering quite a few things; think of it as Tapas, Japan-style. We had few types of yakitori (Skewers), the oysters, several mocktails, their OG Ramen and Ribs. We really made the rounds and the staff treated us special for dessert, with shaved ice and their “Honey Cube.” It was the little things. Whenever a patron got up to use the bathroom or go anywhere else staff was around to refold their napkin, and your water was never empty. They had an “Expo” or expeditor, posted at the kitchen window alerting the wait staff to whenever food was ready to be brought to the tables. I think it is brilliant that the restaurant management took the initiative to post their own professional photos on this platform and on their website. While the customers can provide a sense of consistency (and that is important), artists should control presentation of their art… good for them.

Writing this review as I'm eating my leftovers - We made a reservation at Shokudo for my birthday and it was absolutely amazing. After coming back from Japan last year, I was craving something in Charleston that could compare to the food and this meal truly brought me back. It's very clear that Shokudo puts a lot of thought, respect and time into their food, something that really differentiates Japanese food from the rest. The service was amazing, they gave me a personalized birthday card and the whole staff was constantly attentive to our table. Truly one of the best dining experiences I've had. I'm so happy that people in Charleston can now experience food like this.

Indago Road has done it again, with another amazing concept with the best Japanese food & service. This is not your ordinary Japanese food this is Izakaya-Tavern🏮 style where they smoke the food with charcoal so the taste is smokey in a good way. The menu was super extensive with plenty of meats and sides to try. Chef Masa is so talented; I would highly recommend coming and giving them a try, it’s a great addition to King St, in Charleston. Make sure you come with friends so you can order all types of different dishes to share! Ask for Connor, he took such great care of us, and made our dinner so memorable.

We had an excellent dinning experience with Chris. Every dish was amazing, the flavors were incredible, and the service was top notch. Highly recommend the bbq ribs, the oysters, and the kushi katsu. We had many other small plates and the Nagoya ramen dish and dessert. We will definitely be back!

We tried Shokudo on opening day and absolutely loved it! We ordered a variety of skewers and every single one was delicious — the duck meatball (kamo tsukune), chicken thigh (tori negima - my favorite!), and pork butt (kushi katsu). The karaage was perfectly crispy and flavorful, and the BBQ pork ribs were incredible (sticky & sweet). The ramen was okay and a bit light on the broth. We finished with the miso ice cream, and we absolutely loved it! It is definitely on the pricier side, which makes it more of a special-occasion spot than a regular dinner outing. Still, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and very welcoming, and the overall quality and service made it a memorable visit!

We finally made it to Shokudo and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We couldn’t wait to try it—and now we can’t wait to go back for all the dishes we didn’t get to try this time. The service was friendly and attentive, and everything we ordered was packed with flavor. The standout dishes for us were the lamb and pork skewers—perfectly seasoned, tender, and truly memorable. We’re already planning our next visit! Highly recommend.

Yelp
See Jonas at the bar. He makes a mean Old Fashion and keeps you entertained at the back bar when everyone is busy. Back bar was my favorite even though last time I went it was too cold. There's a guy that has an accent that was in the back bar with Jonas. Forgot his name but told great Irish jokes. N

Yelp
I had seen a few of my friends posting about Shokudo so we booked a double date night for Sunday! When we arrived, we were promptly seated at our table. The restaurant is a little dark and a little loud but what downtown isn't these days? I also know when I go downtown I'm going to be paying downtown prices, so I knew what I was walking into (plus, labor and food costs are sky high these days!) Our server was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly. I don't recall his name, but he gave us a very thorough breakdown of the menu. We decided to order the "shake shaka" fries, karaage chicken namban, wagyu gyoza, "bbq" pork rib, toro beef, and the a-5 beef tartare temaki. I think what threw me the most was that the "slightly large" plates came out first, before the hand rolls and smaller plates. I don't have a problem with things coming out as they are ready, I think I just was surprised. Again, not enough to never come back. The skewer and the hand roll were really tasty (I do wish the hand roll had been assembled but honestly, I get it - the presentation was A+). The ribs were extremely flavorful and a much larger portion that I was expecting, but I did have to eat around some weird fatty sections. I found the dumplings to be a little mediocre considering their cost - I feel like a sauce would have really elevated them to the next level. Both the karaage and the fries were cooked perfectly and my husband loved them. For dessert, we went with the fried s'mores and the golden arches hand pie. Honestly, 10/10 all around. I had seen the pie so I knew what to expect but the s'mores dish was a surprise and I wanted to lick the plate (don't be scared of the matcha - it's just dusted on lightly). That apple pie though...I need them to sell in a multipack because I want it DAILY. One of our friends doesn't eat seafood so she felt the menu was a little limiting for her, but we checked it out in advance and found some things that worked. I'll definitely be back to try some of the other skewers (seriously, the beef was SO tender and amazing) and obviously I'll get more dessert. A solid addition to downtown, for sure.

Yelp
Wow, this is our new favorite place in Charleston! The ambience was classy, the food was spectacular, and the service was impeccable. We were impressed with the server, Matt's, knowledge and the swarm of service from the other servers surrounding during our meal. Our beverages never went empty, and there was never a dirty dish left on the table. We came in for our daughter's 19th birthday dinner, and they spoiled us with some special treats... complementary appetizers and desserts. Between the manager and the servers, they all went above and beyond to make sure our experience was nothing short of exceptional. We cannot wait to go back!

Yelp
We have ate and drank in Charleston the past few days and this is the by far the best! The atmosphere is a chill trendy vibe and the drinks and food are amazing! I highly recommend the "I Shishito you Not" drink! The most balanced drink we have had with a kick! We had skewers, dumplings, ribs, chicken thighs, and everything was amazing. I absolutely couldn't pick a favorite. Holly, our bartender, was knowledgeable and had great suggestions and vibrate attitude you want in a mixologist! You will not regret coming here!

Yelp
I'll start with the pros, the service was amazing and the ambiance is great. The food was extremely overpriced for what it was. $17 for one singular skewer or build your own hand roll missed the mark for me. I really wanted to love this place but everything seemed expensive for what it was.
