The 21 Essential Persian Restaurants in Los Angeles

"Sholeh, also known by the Persian word for “flame,” is an ideal place to celebrate special occasions with family and friends; the space serves just as well as a business dinner spot with its elegantly designed dining room, dressed-up servers, and white tablecloths. The customer-favorite koobideh combination comes with basmati rice or a salad and can be upgraded to include a specialty polo, like the albaloo polo pocked with sour cherries or the adas polo with lentils, caramelized onions, and raisins." - Melody Barooni

We were 7 people gathered at 6:00 pm. No complain from the food. Freshly made bread was delicious and Soltani was very good and salad that came with the Soltani was very fresh. All seven people liked the food and its quality. What bordered some of the guests was the attitude of our server that happened to be the manager. He was not courteous and seemed to be impatient. Somebody must teach these servers that when you are dealing with a large group of guests, 1. Usually two waiters must attend a large group of guests 2. If only one waiter attends to a large group, they have to be patient. The cultural diversity and diversity in tastes, make the orders overwhelming and takes a long time. The waiter became very impatient when two of the guests decided to change their orders and eventually he brought the wrong dish to one of them. The guest agreed to take the wrong dish and emphasized that it is ok as it is. Rather than apologizing and accepting his mistake and leaving, he insisted to bring another chicken koobideh kabob and forced the guest to pay for it. I have never seen such a disrespectful behavior from a waiter and manager. Just an advise to the restaurant owner: as the price of food in restaurants skyrockets and people tend to eat at home more, you must give people a reason to show up at your restaurant and spent hundreds of dollars. 1. Good quality and fresh food which was ok 2. A pleasant dining experience, meaning make your guest feel special and appreciated. We will probably visit this restaurant again but I hope we would not get disappointed.

I would never go back. This place used to be much better in the beginning, but the quality has really declined. The food was served cold, and the ghormeh sabzi was especially bad- it felt like a soup! barely edible. Everyone in our party ordered different dishes, and not a single one was good. We were all disappointed. To make matters worse, the prices were high for such low-quality food. Overall, a frustrating experience. I do not recommend it.

Google
To go foods are packed in very low quality and unhealthy plastic dishes. These disposable dishes are not for packing HOT foods. These low-quality plastic dishes get very warm with hot foods which makes the food dangerous for health. Since we picked them up from the restaurant, we did not check the bag and later saw it in the hotel. After a whole day of searching for apartments, we were too hungry to throw it out and ate it. We did not enjoy it unfortunately. The food also got mushy due to lots of water droplets (caused by the warm food’s heat). We do not recommend "picking up" food from this restaurant because they barely care about people's health.

Google
The appetizer was good, hot and fresh. The chicken main course was dry with no flavor. Service was very good and the place was clean.

HAMID FARZADPOUR

Google
I ordered beef koobideh and I was not able to eat it. It tasted like some other kind of meat than beef and mixed with bread crumbs. I recommend fish.

Sooshiana Rezaei

Google
The worst Koobideh in my life, I feel it was not even meat, mixing some junks and called it Kabab, smelled and taste horrible, very embarrassing especially if non-Iranians try that ! I wish I could rate it zero, never ever try this place!

Soheil Ak

Google
The food was very bad . Sorry but as a Persian myself based in US visiting LA from another city I was extremely disappointed. The Koobideh kebab we ordered was terrible.

Nika

Google

Yelp
Food was fine. I ordered tahchin which had a large portion but I guess they heated it up which had made it a bit soggy. We also ordered ash e reshteh which was good. Cornish was good too. Service is friendly and servers are polite, but we had to look for them and they were not very attentive. Ambiance is nice but Westwood parking is always an issue. I see the restaurant overall rating, though they are not the best, I don't think 2.5 star is fair to them.

Yelp
This place was so bad even one star is too generous! We needed to grab food on a late Sunday night so we stopped by this place on our way back from LA to OC. All I can say is that I've never passed on eating any food specially not when I've been hungry. I ordered kabob barg which is the safest food and you can never go wrong. Unfortunately and to my surprise as soon as they put my food in front of me the bad smell of rotten meat made me so sick I could not touch the food. I told them and they were nice enough to change it to chicken kabob. But, as soon as I took a bite it tasted bad and even though the smell was not nearly as strong but it was still there. My husband also ordered lamb tahchin and barely touched his even though he was very hungry as well. This was the worst food I've ever had in my life

Yelp
The food is excellent, I always take my clients and out of town guests to Sholeh . I'm extremely satisfied with the service and how professional all of the workers are. I highly recommended this place.

Shapour Y.

Yelp
I will never go back to that place because the hostess saw me with shorts and tee shirt said we are full even though there were a lot of tables empty, Since they pick and choose who to serve, this is not a place for me.they don't deserve my money

Yelp
Very basic persian food! Persian square area definitely needs better, fancier, and exciting restaurants! The Persian restaurants in LA are stuck in the past! No restaurant in Iran looks like this nowadays! Change is needed!

Nazdaneh R.

Yelp
Ordered Tahdig but it was so hard almost broke my tooth. After telling our waiter, he said let me bring you fresh one! Why not bring fresh Tahdig in the first place. Also the Koobideh too much baking soda. Do not recommend this restaurant at all.

Sophia P.

Yelp
BEST PERSIAN FOOD! their food is so good and great service! Went tonight with my husband and we drove all the way from LA just to eat there! Juciy koobideh fresh bread just all around great! Clean and decent ambiance!

Shab F.

Yelp
One of the worst Persian restaurant ever , the food is horrible! Don't ever go there .

Mo K.

Yelp
We ordered several different dishes. Barg was good, chicken kabob was good, fresh naan and kashko-bademjan (appetizer ) was the best, but ghormesabzi was really bad, borderline bitter, and I doubt koubideh was even made with meat! Would not go there again!

Alexa C.

Yelp
My first time here but not first time for Persian food One of my favorites. I ordered the combination beef and chicken koonide with Yogurt cucumber appetizer Served immediately and the food was absolutely scrumptious. If you like Persian food I would definitely recommend trying this place

Yelp
in vacation from Washington DC,searching for Persian food and I found this restaurant, Very disappointed with their service, not even once asked if we need anything,I had to walk to their desk to pay my check, I noticed a big discrimination between their customers, which means "AMERICAN "customers was enjoying their good service, not others ,,I recommend them to hang a sign saying "American customers oboy

Yelp
Have been frequenting Sholeh for years and I couldn't be more happy with the food and service. I happened to check out their reviews last night just to see what others thought and I am shocked to see their ratings. Go try it for yourself .. you won't be disappointed!

Tina M.

Yelp
We got kubideh kabab and it was amazing! So happy with the service and food! They brough sabzi and tea for every table too!

Chris K.

Yelp
Here with good friends to try Persian food. We were seated promptly. Our waiter took our drink order within a couple of minutes followed by our appetizer and dinner order Our appetizers came promptly. We ordered yogurt and eggplant appetizers. Both were superb I ordered beef kabob w saffron rice. Was very good. Overall experience 4 star

Setareh M.

Yelp
Sholeh restaurant has lost its flame HORRID HORRIBLE AWFUL FOOD AND STAFF Went there today for my WORSE ever experience of ANY Persian restaurant. We got there at 1:30, only one other couple were there. The server was this young man who at first was ok. The bread made fresh was ok. We ordered tah chin with chicken, which was truly bad. Old, hard chicken, tasted like it was 5 days old. Also ordered a 9 dollar boneless chicken with cherry rice. When the food got there, I was stunned by the 4 little cuts of chicken, 3 of each were either hard as a rock or completely like eating cartilage. I asked the server, the young boy to come over and explained. He said he was sorry and then took a plate from another table and asked for the chicken ONLY to take back. So I shared the not so good tah chin with my wife until the chicken would come. 20 minutes later I WAS DONE and we needed to leave. The server came with the chicken and I told him we had to go and to cancel the chicken. Asked for the bill. The check had no chicken, BUT INSTEAD THE SAME 9 DOLLARS AS RICE!!! So he charged me 9 dollars for rice. I told him he could have his rice back, since I had not touched it, at all. He was SO RUDE AND COMBATIVE. I got very irritated and he explained to me why I was supposed to pay him for a meal I did not have. Then a young lady came, maybe his mom, and said that the boy was only doing his job!! I asked it his job was to fuxx their customer. At this time the boy came right up to my chair in a combative mode. I asked him if I needed to stand up and he invited me to. I did. I think that may have scared him. The lady told us to just leave and not come back. That's with pleasure. I've been to persian restaurants a hundred times, all over westwood. Shahrzad, Shamshiri and others, as well as on santa monica blvd, Javan and Darya. All amazing food, generous portions, incredibly loving staff. No one had EVER invited me to stand. Nor did they ever deliver bad food, then when cancelled, charged me 9 dollars for the rice part of a 9 dollar lunch meal. As you see from other reviews here on yelp, I'm not alone in my experience. I strongly suggest NOT patronizing this restaurant until they change ownership and clean up their act.

Yelp
We ordered 3 kinds of kababs that did not taste and I will not come back here again. You should try another restaurants

Yelp
This a very nice restaurant. Interior decoration is beaitiful, relaxing and inviting. Staff are professional and friendly. They are pretty quick and attentive too. However quality of food could be improved. I ordered labia polo (green been and rice), it was too juicy for a rice dish. I had better chicken kebabs too. Desert and tea was good. I would probably give it a try again, hopefully it will be a better experience. Oh, their freshly backed bread was good too.
google avatar

Honey A.

Yelp
We ordered 2 soltani cholokabab that had no taste, the ghorme sabzi and the gheyme were super sour and the tadeeg was impossible to eat! The fesenjoon at first touch tasted great and ended up tasting like constipation cyrup. Utterly disgusting! We had to wait for two hours for the manager to call us back and he suggested he will give us a credit of 30 percent! Which was unacceptable because 4 our of four foods were untouched! And frankly I'd rather a refund than to ever eat at this place again! Oh and he claimed we all have different taste buds as in three people can't agree a food is clearly terribly sour or saltless! J believable!
google avatar

Evi K.

Yelp
Really great Cornish hen and chengeh. Delicious and high quality. Wasn't busy at all but the service was a bit sloppy. Tea and desert served while the were just a bunch of empty used plates all over the table.
google avatar

Ophelia S.

Yelp
We order kabob, tadig, chicken kabob, and absolutely everything tasted horrible. We have been coming to this restaurant for years and easily spend 100's of dollars each time we come in. There were only two people that were helping everyone inside the restaurant. How can you expect to run a successful business when the quality of food is so low and the service is so slow? What a shame- another Persian restaurant - a waste.
google avatar

Amy J.

Yelp
I liked the kabob only.fesenjoon was super swe and not much walnuts .tacheen was not right smelled like meat and saffron had no smell.we were a big group and tried several dish also kashk bademjoon was tasteless.rice dishes were fine.i give it 2

Roxana D.

Yelp
The service was good but we had the Worst Persian food experience ever! From Sultani dish to cherry rice dish! Both Kebab barg and koobideh tasted like you are eating paper, extremely tasteless and over cooked! The rice was overcooked and too soft! Shallot yogurt was like they mixed crushed shallots with plain yogurt. Chicken kabab tasted better than rest but not juicy enough. Awful experience!

Cici K.

Yelp
The food wasn't good The space is very small and their vip table is right at the dance floor and very uncomfortable because you cant seat at your table and people who are dancing are all over you and if you want to dance it is so crowded that you can barely move! The music was good .

Tony R.

Yelp
Been going here for at least 2 decades, food & service has always been good, I always take suggestions from waiters and other staff, I don't usually write reviews I was taken aback by the negative reviews, wonder if it's from extortionists or competitors, please don't have contempt prior to investigation decide for yourself. Amir has always been our families server, can't wait until the pandemic is over so I won't have to order for Shole delivery and can find in. Please make your mind for all the businesses there are lots of good Apps that help you spot take reviews like Fakespot and others.

BK B.

Yelp
Horrible service. Took 45 minutes to get our meal. Very rude staff. Would not recommend lunch.
google avatar

Salimibeni B.

Yelp
We ordered 3 different kind of kabab none of them had any taste. It didn't even taste bad or good. Literally no taste
google avatar

Nasrin M.

Yelp
The food was out of this world , the service was amazing, loved every second of i spent here ,i highly recommend this place ,worth every penny
google avatar

Fred F.

Yelp
Nice clean restaurant, good service, overall above average to good food. It's changed owners several times & has had its ups & downs. The food is good but could use some improvement.
google avatar

Alex M.

Yelp
The worst Perisan food outlet in town. Tasteless chelo kebab, gehmeh that had an over abundance of dry lemons prob substituted for other ingredients. Home delivered and utterly disgusting. The meat was poor quality, the tahgig was hard as nails. The managers response was completely unprofessional. Possible hygiene issues as we are all very ill after the experience. #disgusting
google avatar

Varand P.

Yelp
This review is for combination of food, place/atmosphere and staff. The food is 5star, very delicious well cooked and perfect. The place is 3 star , from design to cleanness and restrooms... The staff weren't really nice, come to tables very late and things like that.
google avatar

Shawn B.

Yelp
The food was mediocre.. I love tahdig, so we ordered and it was so old and rubbery that we could not eat it. We told the rude waiter and he said let me see and he never came back to our table and a busboy brought the check at the end and they charged us 9 dollars for the tahdig that it would have broken my tooth !! The whole experience was bad. Used to go there quite often and it was always good and wait staff were very pleasant... not any more!! People seem to have sense it and restaurant was not full at all and maybe that's why they tried to feed us 2 day old tahdig! 63 dollars for a horrible lunch!
google avatar

Negar V.

Yelp
Awful food and service, I ordered a white fish with sabzi polo the fish that they brought was less than 10gr ! It was like as much as 2 bites ! I was so hungry i wanted to eat but when i saw that how poorly was the preparation i just didn't touch the food and returned it ! When i complained that to the manager she said we are the best and started to bring stupid reasons for that terrible food they served! Never waist your money on that place !

Leyle M.

Yelp
We ordered Kabob and tadig ,tadig was very hard and the taste of khoresht was bad, the kabob looked old and it smiled bed, we told a bout it and he denied it , It was a waste of time and money and I will never go back again.

MJ M.

Yelp
If you want a server with bad attitude and below average Iranian food ,this is the right place for you . Since ,this might be the same for quite a few of the Iranian Resturants in LA,so I will elaborate . Maste mosir was mountain high Yougurt with dried shallots ,koobiedeh was sweet, and Barg was anything but filet! One bright spot was the hot bread. Did I mention the service was lousy ! Will never go back !

Mahta S.

Yelp
It was the worst experience of a Persian restaurant. I ordered TAHCHIN for to go. When I opened it at home I realized that it is a REHEATed food not the fresh one!! And the funniest thing was that when I called them, they surprisingly told me that this is their routine, and they always serve reheated Tahchin!!! Its so wired! everybody likes to eat fresh food not the reheated one!!!

Asa A.

Yelp
This is my favorite Persian restaurant in LA. My family has been coming here for as long as I can remember and it never fails to disappoint. The rice is perfect, ghormeh sabzi and gheimeh amazing and the kabobs all excellent. The owners are extremely kind and the staff really does an amazing job. They can get very busy so expect a wait, but it's well worth it! We also like to order take out or delivery for parties. The catering is always a hit.
google avatar

Shayan S.

Yelp
I went to Sholeh when they first opened and the food was amazing! Today we decided to give it a try since we were in the neighborhood. Let me just tell you the only start given is for their zereshkpolo! The mast o moseer was watery and sweet! Even aab Ali mast o moodier is better than what we just had. I ordered a soltani: the Barg felt as though you were chewing on plastic! The koobideh was alright. The five pieces of lamb kabob were slightly burnt but it was ok. Not going back! Service was great though.
google avatar

Shabnam S.

Yelp
I did not like the environment, food and the way they were serving food. Immature servants and very hot place for the sunny day. Expensive food without high quality. We will not come back here EVER!

Mohammad R.

Yelp
Bread was like hard rubber, Staff said we are not responsible for bread! (Apparently) it was baked there), the other staff said: We do not charge for bread!!, One other staff reluctantly admitted the bread is not ok, but in general very rude staff. No problem with Kabob, and other included items. This comment is only for staff attitude,
google avatar

Nima I.

Yelp
The servers were extreamly rude. The food is below average. This has been worst experiance in a persian restaurant.
google avatar

Ellie L.

Yelp
Last weekend I went to Sholeh to have some tea and suites with my cousin but they refuse to Serve us we had to order food first to be able to get the tea so we decided to order Fesenjoon ! I am glad we did ! It was the best Fesenjoon I have had for a long time their Fesenjoon deserve 5 stars it was not to sweet or sour it was just perfect !
google avatar

Heidi K.

Yelp
Fresh Bread, Yammy . Fried rice with stow is great plus their service is fast and nice and clean.
google avatar

Maryam T.

Yelp
Great place, very delicious food, and most important is amazing service! Thank you so much for fabulous management!
google avatar

Seyed R.

Yelp
Very good food and excellent service! Parking is hard because nothing is on Westwood but it is worth trying because they have chelo kabob that nobody could dislike it is so good!
google avatar

Jason P.

Yelp
Great food, good service. The bread is out of this world. I think the best thing on their menu is the beef kabob. I go here for lunch a good amount.

Reza M.

Yelp
Despite the negative reviews here, I had a superb service in Sholeh (this is the second time I'm here) and the food was very delicious.
